COWARAMUP MILL<br />
Cowaramup timber mill was operated by PD Ryan and Sons, just north <strong>of</strong><br />
Cowaramup on Bussell Highway. The mill was bought by Mr Phil Ryan in<br />
1926, when it was located in <strong>West</strong> Busselton. In 1935 it was shifted by horse<br />
team to Yallingup and in 1940 relocated to Cowaramup. It continued to mill<br />
timber for sleepers, as well as ordered building timber until its closure in 1972.<br />
Mechanisation, modern equipment, the advent <strong>of</strong> heavy haulage trucks and<br />
the closure <strong>of</strong> the railway line all contributed to the closure.<br />
At its peak period it employed 25 men with between 220-250 sleepers being<br />
cut per day. One truck was used full time to cart the sleepers to the local<br />
railway siding for on transport to Busselton or Bunbury. From there the<br />
sleepers were shipped to domestic and international clients. More than<br />
50,000 sleepers were produced yearly.<br />

The records were donated to <strong>Battye</strong> <strong>Library</strong> by Ms Julie Ryan on 7 July 2003<br />
(Acc.6199A).<br />
