Who
we are
GS1 is an international not for profit association with a presence in most developed countries.
For the last 40 years, we have designed and helped to implement global standards for use
in supply chains. In this way we are creating a world where all items and related information
move efficiently and securely for the benefit of businesses and improvement of people’s lives,
everyday, everywhere.
GS1’s standards and solutions improve the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand
chains globally and across all sectors. By providing a common language, they enable
organisations of all kinds to interact effectively and without ambiguity. The standards
bring together companies of all sizes and sectors– manufacturers, distributors, retailers,
restaurants, hospitals, government departments, local authorities, utilities companies, builders,
transporters, customs authorities, software developers, and many more.
Standards play a part in everything; from scanning groceries at the supermarket or buying
a new CD from a website, to locating equipment in a hospital quickly enough to save a life.

Our standards are applicable to any industry but we have particular focus on the retail,
healthcare, food service and online industries.
GS1 UK is user driven and user governed. We leverage stakeholders’ insight to develop and
deliver first class solutions for the members that we serve. Our neutrality enables us to be
objective and put the needs of the industries we serve above those of individual members.

Membership
options
As a GS1 UK Strategic Partner we will work in partnership
on specific programmes that will address some of the
major challenges facing supply chains across all industries.
Strategic Partners are leaders in their field, whether academic
or commercial organisations, and will have a significant
reputation and level of influence in the market. You must also
have the ability, desire and capacity to participate in GS1 UK
programmes and our solution development strategy.
Strategic Partners must be members of GS1 UK and are
chosen on a case-by-case basis with approval by our
Supervisory Board.
As a GS1 UK Industry Partner we will proactively work with
you to drive adoption of GS1 standards through your certified
solutions and services.
We will devise a business plan of mutually beneficial
objectives and activities that will be aligned with our industry
programmes and solution development strategy in our focal
sectors.
You will become accredited in at least one area of GS1
standards and have the option of certifying your solution(s).
You can gain access to our 28,000 members through
networking events and joint marketing campaigns.
As a GS1 UK Solution Associate we will support you through
online marketing opportunities and increase your visibility to
our members.
You will support the adoption of GS1 standards enabled
solutions and services.
You will become accredited in at least one area of GS1
standards and you will have ongoing access to information
about GS1 standards.

Accreditation
Accreditation is the qualification that measures your knowledge, expertise and understanding of GS1 standards,
recognised by our members.
Accreditation in one of our standards is a requirement for all members of the GS1 UK Partner Programme. Accreditation
must be passed within three months of joining the programme.
A minimum number of staff must pass the online exam for you to become accredited.
Smaller organisations, with under 5 employees, that do not have the capacity to undertake an accreditation can opt to
take a non technical course and exam on the GS1 System.

Certification
Certifying your solution is available to GS1 UK
industry partners and solution associates.
By certifying your solution you can:
• Differentiate your solution from others in
the market
• Demonstrate your compliance with GS1
standards
• Associate your solution more closely with GS1
UK in the marketplace
• Participate in GS1 UK-led industry programmes
• Generate new business opportunities
Certification follows a five step process:
1. Demonstration of the solution
2. Review of solution documentation and
marketing material
3. Completion of a certification questionnaire
4. Validation of sample inputs or outputs
5. Reference sites check
One of our specialist consultants will work with you
through the process. Re-certification is required on
an annual basis.

Membership is based on an annual subscription model. The amount you pay depends on your company’s published
UK annual turnover and your membership level. If you are a new company you can calculate your membership fee
from your expected annual turnover.
