Education <strong>an</strong>d Hum<strong>an</strong> Resources Development<br />

distribution of our museum shows, two copies of each show reside at Penn State <strong>an</strong>d are<br />

used extensively by our faculty <strong>an</strong>d graduate students to present <strong>the</strong> show locally. We<br />

have presented our museum shows over 100 times in classrooms, <strong>for</strong> visiting school<br />

groups, <strong>an</strong>d in summer camps <strong>an</strong>d workshops.<br />

Postdoctoral Mentoring Pl<strong>an</strong><br />

Our mentoring pl<strong>an</strong> <strong>for</strong> postdoctoral fellows begins<br />

with <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>an</strong> Individual Development<br />

Pl<strong>an</strong> (IDP) by each postdoctoral fellow working in<br />

conjunction with <strong>the</strong> lead faculty mentor(s) on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

project. The purpose of <strong>the</strong> IDP is to outline <strong>the</strong> specific<br />

long-term career goals <strong>an</strong>d short-term objectives of <strong>the</strong><br />

postdoctoral fellow, identify areas <strong>for</strong> specialized<br />

training, <strong>an</strong>d facilitate effective communication of<br />

expectations between <strong>the</strong> postdoc <strong>an</strong>d faculty mentor(s).<br />

The faculty mentor(s) <strong>the</strong>n provides <strong>the</strong> postdoctoral fellow with counseling tailored to<br />

match <strong>the</strong>ir long-term career goals in academia, industry or government. Depending on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir interests <strong>an</strong>d goals, <strong>the</strong> postdoctoral scholar is offered a variety of training<br />

opportunities including both <strong>for</strong>mal workshops <strong>an</strong>d seminars <strong>an</strong>d in<strong>for</strong>mal mentoring.<br />

Key components of our mentoring pl<strong>an</strong> include:<br />

• Introducing our postdocs to <strong>the</strong> local environment <strong>an</strong>d campus-wide resources<br />

available to support <strong>the</strong>ir research, teaching, <strong>an</strong>d professional development.<br />

• Creating <strong>an</strong>d implementing Individual Development Pl<strong>an</strong> that are tailored to meet<br />

career goals of each individual postdoctoral fellow. These pl<strong>an</strong>s are based on<br />

published best practices <strong>an</strong>d follow methods as presented in <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Postdoctoral Society mentoring toolkit. 1<br />

• Participating in <strong>the</strong> Scholarship <strong>an</strong>d Research Integrity (SARI) program at Penn<br />

State to provide <strong>the</strong> postdoctoral scholars with comprehensive, multilevel training<br />

in <strong>the</strong> responsible conduct of research.<br />

• Participating in brownbag lunch series where speakers are invited discuss topics<br />

related to career development including leadership, professional ethics, work-life<br />

bal<strong>an</strong>ce, conflict resolution, career paths inside <strong>an</strong>d outside of academia, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

entrepreneurship. Attending seminars on applying <strong>for</strong> academic positions <strong>an</strong>d<br />

negotiating start-up packages. The Penn State Postdoctoral Society sponsors <strong>the</strong>se<br />

activities.<br />

• Presenting research results at <strong>the</strong> MRSEC weekly lunchtime seminar series, weekly<br />

group meetings, <strong>an</strong>d biweekly IRG meetings to develop communication <strong>an</strong>d<br />

presentation skills.<br />

• Participating in a journal club org<strong>an</strong>ized by <strong>the</strong> Penn State Graduate School to<br />

review <strong>an</strong>d critique journal articles <strong>an</strong>d provide guid<strong>an</strong>ce on writing scholarly<br />

publications.<br />
