<strong>the</strong> museum shows in partnership with <strong>the</strong><br />
Fr<strong>an</strong>klin Institute. These museum shows at<br />
<strong>the</strong> Fr<strong>an</strong>klin <strong>an</strong>d 20 partner science museums<br />
were estimated to reach over 100,000 particip<strong>an</strong>ts<br />
in 2010. The <strong>Center</strong>’s outreach also targets<br />
<strong>the</strong> audience of one, through h<strong>an</strong>ds-on<br />
research experiences, summer camps, workshops,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d local events that benefit both particip<strong>an</strong>ts<br />
<strong>an</strong>d student mentors from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Center</strong>.<br />
In 2010, <strong>the</strong> fourth museum show on renewable<br />
energy was brought close to completion;<br />
it is scheduled <strong>for</strong> distribution to partner science<br />
museums in 2011. Two successful summer<br />
camps were delivered in 2010, one targeting<br />
a very young demographic (Gee Wizards,<br />
grades 2–4) <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r aimed at highschool<br />
students being groomed <strong>for</strong> future<br />
leadership roles (<strong>Science</strong> Leadership Camp).<br />
The latter camp was subst<strong>an</strong>tially enh<strong>an</strong>ced<br />
from its first-ever offering in <strong>the</strong> previous<br />
year <strong>an</strong>d included a very successful evening<br />
mixer between <strong>the</strong> campers <strong>an</strong>d MRSEC scientists<br />
at all levels. The <strong>Center</strong> continues to<br />
work energetically to increase <strong>the</strong> participation<br />
of women <strong>an</strong>d under-represented minorities<br />
at all levels. At <strong>the</strong> K-12 levels, diversityfocused<br />
activities included <strong>the</strong> science leadership<br />
camp <strong>an</strong>d guided inquiry summer laboratory<br />
experiences <strong>for</strong> high school students<br />
from disadv<strong>an</strong>taged schools through <strong>the</strong> Upward<br />
Bound program. The <strong>Center</strong>’s REU<br />
program continues to be strongly diversityfocused,<br />
leveraging partnerships with<br />
minority-serving institutions in Puerto Rico,<br />
Texas, <strong>an</strong>d Louisi<strong>an</strong>a.<br />
