Continuing Professional Development courses at UWE Bristol<br />

Bookbinding skills for artists with Guy Begbie<br />

A new series of one-day courses for artists to learn bookbinding.<br />

Participants will be shown how to make their own books using<br />

a variety of bookbinding structures, materials and techniques.<br />

These courses include both traditional and unorthodox<br />

bookbinding structures and making book boxes and containers.<br />

During these practical sessions, Guy will share technical<br />

bookbinding skills to develop professional quality books and<br />

book boxes.<br />

The courses include:<br />

The Pamphlet/Booklet and Japanese Stab Bindings<br />

Friday 22nd <strong>February</strong> <strong>2008</strong><br />

The French Sewn Flat Back and Concertina Binding<br />

Friday 18th April<br />

Collapsible Star Binding and The Coptic Stitch<br />

Friday 23rd May<br />

Book Boxes and Containers<br />

Friday 20th June<br />

Each day will run from 9.30 am - 4.30 pm and is limited to 10<br />

participants. Each of the above classes costs £80 per day.<br />

You will need to bring basic drawing equipment, a flat steel<br />

ruler, a craft knife or scalpel, an A3 cutting mat (optional,<br />

we can supply a sheet of mount board to use instead) and a<br />

triangular plastic set square, all other equipment will be<br />

supplied. Bookbinding tools will also be available to buy<br />

during the course for future use.<br />

Guy Begbie is a bookbinder and multi disciplinary artist. He<br />

exhibits his artists’ books and delivers book arts workshops and<br />

master classes internationally. Guy is the Book Arts Co-ordinator<br />

at Herefordshire College of Arts. He is the external examiner<br />

for BA (Hons) Book Arts & Crafts at London College of<br />

Communication, University of the Arts, London.<br />

Each day will run from 9.30am - 4.30pm<br />

Coffee break 11.00am - 11.30am, lunch 1.00pm - 2.00pm<br />

(lunch vouchers, teas and coffees included in course fee)<br />

Laser Cutting Master Class for book artists with<br />

Claire Humphries<br />

Wednesday 5th March <strong>2008</strong><br />

9.30 am - 4.30 pm<br />

Price £100 (includes lunch) Limited to 5 participants.<br />

Laser-cutting can produce delicate imagery or text cut outs<br />

through most paper / material surfaces, for prints, altered books,<br />

paper structures and overlaying pages of text and image. The<br />

course is designed to be appropriate for people with or without<br />

previous experience, as a chance to see the possibilities and<br />

experiment with laser cutting.<br />
