First-Generation Initiative
What is it? The First-Generation Initiative will provide full scholarships and academic support
for students who are the first in their families to go to college, especially students from families
of limited resources.
• Financial support for tuition, room and board, and internship/study abroad experiences,
• On-campus enrichment programs, and
• College preparatory summer camps.
Who will benefit? Students from Lasallian high schools, Cristo Rey, San Miguel and Nativity
schools, and first-generation immigrant children will receive a Lasallian Catholic college education.
When will this program begin? The first summer camp will be held on campus in 2010,
and up to 15 new students will be enrolled at Saint Mary’s each year starting in August 2010.
Why this program? Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is committed to providing a human
and Christian education to the young, including first-generation students who would otherwise
be left behind.
How much will it cost? The cost to provide a First-Generation Initiative scholarship is
$35,000 per student, per year. When the program is fully operational with 60 enrolled students,
the cost will be approximately $2.1 million per year.
