Uniform Guidelines 2013-2014

Morehead STEM Academy is proud to announce the proposed implementation
of Middle School uniforms. The following is a draft of the Morehead STEM
Academy Middle School uniform guidelines. The final outcome of the process
will be shared in a subsequent document pending school board and school
leadership team approval.
As the districts premier K-8 STEM magnet program, Morehead is known for being
on the cutting edge of 21 s t century learning for scholars who walk through its
doors. With the implementation of school uniforms for Morehead STEM
Academy, the school will see positive effects in the following areas upon
approval:
• Safety:The school uniform creates security through identification. With
scholars wearing uniforms, the inherent need to fit in or mock scholars
because of what they are or are not wearing is minimized. On field trips,
scholars in uniform aid the teacher in keeping track of everyone.
• School Spirit:The school uniform creates a cohesive environment for
scholars in our academy, and shows that scholars are a part of a
community that is striving for excellence. With the wearing of the school
uniform, scholars will feel as though they are a part of a team, working
toward the same STEM continuum goals, and will take pride in the
wearing of their school colors.
• School Discipline:With the implementation of the school uniform policy,
the desire is to create an environment that is scholar and STEM focused,
and not centered undue attention on a specific person. The neat
appearance created by the wearing of the school uniform fosters a ready
to learn atmosphere.
• Parental Involvement: Parents of scholars will be involved in the creation
and implementation of Morehead STEM Academy Middle School Uniform
Guidelines. Parents and guardians will be surveyed on the different
uniform options as well as being solicited for funds from the PTSA to
provide school uniforms for scholars from low income families. Families
will also be asked to voluntarily purchase one additional uniform item for
the “Morehead Closet” to support families who may be in need of
assistance.

Girls Kindergarten – 5 t h
Shirts and Polos
• Polo must be a solid color with NO patterns, designs, or artwork
permitted with the exception of the Morehead STEM Academy crest,
STEM logo, or Cougar Paw.
o Polo color options:white, blue, orange (varying shades are
acceptable)
o Logo embroidery includes that of the Morehead STEM Academy Crest (in
gray and navy), the school staff logo, or the cougar paw in orange
Pants/Skirts/Shorts/Dresses
• Pants, skirts, shorts, or dresses must be solid colored. No patterns,
designs, or artwork permitted. Skirt, dress, and short hems must
come to the knee.
o Navy Blue
o Black
o Tan/Khaki
Shoes and Socks/Stockings/Leggings/Tights
• Shoes must be appropriate, safe, and worn at all times. Shoes must
have a closed back and closed toe
• Shoes must be white, black, navy, or brown
• Ballet flats are acceptable and must cover heel and toe, and
coordinate with Middle School uniform
• Heels are acceptable, but heels should be 1 inch or less

o Blazer must be a solid navy or black color with NO patterns,
designs, or artwork with the exception of the Morehead STEM
Academy crest or STEM logo

Shirts and Polos
• Collared shirt
• Polo must be a solid color with NO patterns, designs, or artwork
permitted
o Polo color options:
• Undershirts must be worn under the polo shirt if worn
o Long or short sleeved shirts, camisoles, turtlenecks, or tank
tops are permitted
o Must be solid white, black, or navy with no patterns, designs,
or artwork
o Must be tucked in
• Sizing
o Shirts and polo’s MUST cover chest (cleavage) and midriff
(while standing and seated)
o May not hang below fingertips while arms are at side
o May not be cinched, tied, or clipped in the front or back
Pants/Skirts/Shorts/Dresses
• Pants, skirts, shorts, or dresses must be solid colored. No patterns,
designs, or artwork permitted. Jeans in the designated color criteria
are allowed.
o Navy Blue
o Black
o Tan/Khaki
• Bottoms must be worn at the waist at all times. Belts are permitted.
• Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be at the fingertips when standing
straight
• Bottoms that scholars CANNOT wear include:

o Oversized, baggy, sagging, hip hugging, skinny leg, or skin
tight pants (no undergarments should be visible)
o Cargo style bottoms
o Athletic shorts
o Sweat pants
o Pants with rips, tears, or fringe
o Pajama pants
Belts
• Brown, black, or navy
• MUST be worn with all apparel with belt loops
• Belts should not have studs, metal trappings, or messages

General Uniform Guidelines for ALL Morehead STEM Academy Scholars
Uniform Appearance
• Fit appropriately (not tight or baggy)
• Be neat and clean (no tears, rips, or frays)
• Shirts must be tucked in at all times
• Pants, shorts, and skirts waistbands may not be rolled in order to
shorten length; minimum length of shorts, skirts, and dress must be
at the fingertips when standing straight
Hair
• Must be neat, clean, and out of eyes
• Hair accessories must coordinate with uniform
Jewelry
• Must be appropriate and coordinate/compliment with uniform
Outerwear and Extreme Cold
The Morehead STEM Academy uniform guidelines will remain in effect
during cold weather. Outside coats and jackets are not permitted to be
worn throughout the school day.
Field Trips
Morehead STEM Academy polo with khaki pants, shorts, or skirts
*Scholars will be permitted to participate in religious observations with
solid colors that match the approved dress code colors*
Uniform Infractions for Elementary School Scholars
Morehead STEM Academy reserves the right to address uniform infractions
that present themselves as a distraction or that is deemed to be in noncompliance
of the Morehead STEM Academy Middle School Uniform
Guidelines.
Uniform Infractions for Middle School Scholars
Morehead STEM Academy reserves the right to address uniform infractions
that present themselves as a distraction or that is deemed to be in noncompliance
of the Morehead STEM Academy Middle School Uniform
Guidelines.
• First Infraction: Warning and Parent/Guardian phone call
• Second Infraction: Parent/Guardian will be asked to bring a
change of clothes to school. If parent/guardian is unwilling to
bring a change of clothes to the school, the scholar will be given
in-school suspension for the day.
• Third Infraction: Parent/Guardian notification and one day in ISS
• Fourth Infraction: Parent/Guardian notification and two days in ISS
• Subsequent Infractions: Parent/Guardian notification and one day
out of school suspension

As Morehead STEM Academy implements the new dress code policy, we
would like to create a “Morehead Closet” to support families who may be
in need of assistance. If you are able to help, please consider purchasing
one additional item to donate to this effort. These items can be brought
to the main office.
