Travel Club heads for Europe

The David Thompson Secondary School Travel Club will depart from the 

Calgary airport on March 16th for their 13-day excursion to Europe. Over the 

course of the trip they will visit selected parts of Italy, Greece and Rome and enjoying 

a three-day cruise of the beautiful whitewashed isles of Greece. These 22 

students embarking on this wonderful journey will be accompanied by chaperones 

Werner Kopp, Louise Nicholson, Brian Stade, and Fay Stade. 

After planning the trip for almost a year, the group is more than ready to 

set off to Europe, where they will explore wonders such as the Colosseum, the 

Sistine Chapel, Pompeii, Roman ruins and the Athenian cemetery. With a busy 

schedule ahead of the them, it is obvious the Travel Club is in for an adventure 

they will never forget.

Midget Girls reach for the top 

The Devils Midget Girls’ Hockey Team are victorious. 

The young team beat out Cranbrook in a three-game playoff, advancing 

them to the provincials. The championships will be held in Coquitlam from 

March 19 to 25. 

“The girls were, as you can imagine, very excited since they are the first 

girls’ hockey team from the area to make it to provincials,” said hockey mom 

Lisa Kebe. “Our girls had a great season this year, beating the first and second 

place teams in the league to finish the season in fifth out of 12 teams.” Their 

performance was much better than anticipated. 

The girls have come a long way this season and are very much looking forward 

to playing in Coquitlam. 

Good luck, Devils! 

The DTSS Travel Club is excited about their upcoming trip to Europe. Some of 

the students worked at as many as four jobs to help pay for their trip.

College profiles Bob Gadsby is an instructor at the Invermere Campus of the College 

of the Rockies. He teaches in the self-paced adult upgrading program. 

This program is designed for people wanting to complete high school 

equivalent coursed for purposes of graduation, college entry, job

I had the opportunity to attend the College of the 

Rockies in Invermere from September 2001 to 

April 2002. I was enrolled in the Hotel/Resort 

Management program offered. After many years of 

being at home raising children, I was seeking skills 

(and moral support) for re-entering the work force. 

The program offered a balanced approach including 

computer skills, accounting, marketing as well as the 

more specific courses of front desk, housekeeping 

and food and beverage services. 

I found the college and all those involved to be helpful, 

welcoming and knowledgeable. They were very 

flexible and accommodating which made the transition 

for preparing to enter the work force that much 

easier. The courses were very helpful in gaining the 

basic skills and confidence to do them, as well as 

opening a few doors to several opportunities. 

I did get a job at a fairly new Ad & Print Agency - 

Mackena Creative - almost immediately upon 

completion of the courses. My interview for one of 

my assignments was with Sandy Fika, co-owner of 

the business and this led to my opportunity! 

While I may not be working specifically in the 

Hotel/Resort Industry, the courses were balanced 

enough to extend to other prospects. My experience 

at the College of the Rockies was very positive and 

I would heartily recommend it to anyone seeking 

qualified education that is accessible and flexible.

requirements or simply for personal satisfaction. Most people take 

mathematics, English or computer courses, but a wide variety of 

courses are available, either in-house or through distance education. 

Bob moved to the valley in 1989 with his wife, Leona, and two boys, 

Jordan and Forest. A third boy, Robin, was born in 1990 in the house 

they rented in Windermere, owned by the Carscadens. They moved 

to Edgewater in the Spring of 1990 where they lived for six years 

before moving into Invermere. 

In addition to his work at the college helping people achieve their 

academic goals, Bob is very active in the community with the 

Invermere Judo Club and the Columbia Valley Youth Soccer 

Association. 

Bob began taking judo classes in 1994 because his boys were taking 

judo. With his natural ability to teach, he was soon helping the 

instructor with classes for the younger kids. Bob is now a first-degree 

black belt (Shodan), a certified coach and a provincial level referee. 

Two nights a week he attends judo where he instructs, along with 

head Sensei, Hermann Mauthner. In addition to instructing, Bob also 

manages the financial and administratives aspects of the club. 

When his boys began to participate in the local soccer program, 

Bob also became involved, starting with co-coaching his son's U9 

team. Bob continued to coach and when asked to help with the 

administration of the soccer program, he agreed. Through his efforts 

and the support of dozens of volunteer coaches, referees and 

managers, the soccer program has expanded to include almost 500 

kids in its Spring program. In addition to managing the affairs of the 

association, Bob is a rep team coach and a provincially certified 

referee. On top of that, for the past five years, in the Fall, he has 

coached and refereed in the high school boys’ soccer program.

The Invermere campus is at the centre of many 

important initiatives in the valley. Marilyn Petersen 

and her staff lead the way on issues from adult literacy to 

training for wildfire fuel reduction. Businesses interested 

in tourism marketing and skills training look first to the 

college for solutions and are seldom disappointed.

Premier Programs at 

the Invermere Campus... 

College of the Rockies' Invermere Campus offers a full complement 

of health programs including Licensed Practical Nursing, Resident 

Care Attendant/Home Support Certification, and all levels of First 

Aid training and certification. 

The college has responded to the demand in the valley for more 

trained tradespeople and is currently offering the Residential 

Construction Framing Technician Program in partnership with 

the Canadian Home Builders Association of BC and the Industry 

Training Authority. Local contractors provide these students with 

on-the-job practical work experience in the practicum component 

of this 11-month program. 

Students also have an opportunity to gain exposure to a wide 

variety of trades in the 10-week Introduction to Trades Program 

which provides students with basic instruction in trades including 

plumbing, electrical, welding, timber framing, carpentry and 

automotive mechanics. Students in this program also obtain 

various industry and workplace certifications. 

The Invermere Campus has also been involved in coordinating a 

number of Job Creation Partnership projects which have completed 

community generated projects such as the Community Hall 

Renovation, the Interface Fire Protection Project and the current 

project to complete the Field House at Mount Nelson Athletic Park. 

Other programs new to the Invermere Campus this year include the 

Restaurant Employability Skills Training Program and Office Skills 

Discovery Program. These programs are designed to provide 

entry-level training related to the workplace. 

The college has also expanded its Highschool Upgrading/College 

Prep program to include two evenings a week of study 

opportunities. This self-paced, continuous intake program enables 

students to upgrade highschool courses, complete college program 

prerequisites or simply update academic/ technology skills. 

The Invermere Campus continues to offer a wide variety of 

continuing education, contract training and general interest 

courses. There are courses designed for many interests and 

age ranges as well as a wide variety of on-line learning 

opportunities. Learn where you live and play - enroll in a 

course at the Invermere campus.

Today is March 11th and our 

Old-Timers’ hockey season ends this 

weekend. It seems like only a couple 

of weeks ago that we started our season. 

Maybe it seems that way because 

our memories, for better or worse, are 

beginning to fail us. 

All of us had aspirations of playing 

on the eventual championship team. 

Sadly, most of us did not achieve this 

goal!! After 26 fun-filled games and 

nights out with our buds, the reality 

remains that the successful hockey careers 

we dreamed of in our youth are 

figments of our imagination, possibly 

enhanced by the hot chocolate or 

herbal tea we consumed each week. 

As I am writing this, there are still 

two or three teams with a chance to 

win it all this year. I will let you know 

next week which team prevailed. 

None of our escapades would be 

possible were it not for the efforts of 

the management and staff of our wonderful 

ice facility here in Invermere.

She’s a kicking player!

With the soccer season just around the corner, 

many students are getting their shin pads and cleats 

ready for the upcoming season. But for Grade 10 

student Holly Krasnuik, the soccer season can’t start 

soon enough. 

Holly has been playing soccer ever since she can 

remember. Her father, Russell Krasnuik, was the 

first person to introduce her to the sport, but ever 

since then Holly has been hooked. Playing on a variety 

of soccer teams throughout her life, Holly has 

gained a large knowledge of the sport and has developed 

exceptional skills. She has played on the David 

Thompson Secondary School Senior Girls Soccer 

team since she was in Grade 8, and last fall she spent 

the season playing on the Junior Boys team. 

“Playing with the junior boys really helped develop 

my skills and it was a great experience for me,” 

said Holly. “I also learned how important it is to 

work as a team.” 

Holly was recently recognized for her achievements 

in soccer when she was invited to the tryouts 

for the Under-16 B.C. Girls Soccer Team. The tryouts 

are used as a skill assessment camp for exceptional 

players, and help many players see what it is 

like to play a high level of soccer. The tryouts were 

held in Burnaby last weekend but unfortunately 

Holly was unable to attend due to the conflicting 

schedule with the East Kootenay Basketball Championships. 

Also, in order to be selected for the Under-16 

team, a full commitment is required from all 

players. Holly would have been expected to attend 

practices twice a week in Vancouver, making it virtually 

impossible for her to make the commitment. 

Although Holly did not attend this tryout, she 

plans on attending any other tryouts or camps that 

come her way once the season begins and she gets 

back into the right mind frame. 

“It is a great opportunity to improve yourself as 

a player. You can take many new skills away from 

camps like these and learn many new helpful drills,” 

said Holly. 

Luckily for the Senior Girls Soccer Team, Holly 

will be able to contribute to their already strong and 

growing team once the spring season commences. 

Until then, Holly plans on continuing to further 

develop her soccer skills and to work on keeping 

a positive attitude. Throughout the duration of 

spring break, Holly hopes to participate in indoor 

practices held in Calgary and also plans to check out 

the university practices to discover new drills and 

see how she needs to prepare herself for university 

level soccer. 

Watch out, Invermere, we may have the next 

Mia Hamm on our hands.
