HCN TID-BITS
The last issue, September, show-
ed the attendance at the 33rd
Annual Reunion. There was one
sad fact that came from that
list. Three Unit lists were taken
from the table depriving the Ed-
itor from having those lists for
the files. This did not allow the
Editor to have a complete list of
those attending. A copy of that
list does not suffice, I still need
the original list, from the 66th,
the 134th, and the 495th. Duplica-
tions and reproductions do not
give the original list. Keep your
cotton picking hands off of them.
They are the property of the As-
sociation, not individual Battalions
or Units.
Many members ask for some-
thing constructive for their 'boost-
ers'. Any and all ideas can be
presented through your Unit
Reps. Just notify him of your
ideas and ask him to put in the
Hellcats News. Contact any Offic-
ers for these personal requests,
let the Council kick them around
before the Reunion.
V THE COMMON MAN 7
I was driving one day, in the country alone,
When I happened to pass by a little farm home.
It was a little frame house with shingles on top,
But there was something about it that made me stop.
I pulled my car to the side of the road,
Right near a field that had just been hoed.
I walked to the house and I paused again,
When a man stepped up and said "Howdy friend"
I told him my name and then I hastened to say,
"I don't mean to intrude but something made me stop here today."
The old man smiled and said "Won't you sit a spell
The Lord sent you here 'cause I've a story to tell."
"You see, the Lord called my wife
Right after we built this little home,
And me and my Boy we stayed here alone.
We worked hard and never complained,
We battled the snow, the wind and the rain!
And after supper, at the close of the day,
We'd take down the Bible and read it and pray.
It wasn't easy, but we made it some way,
'Til the postman came by with that letter one day."
"My boy had to go and answer his country's call.
I can see him now as he stood straight and tall.
He said, "Dad, don't worry for I'll be back one day,
and I want to thank you now for teaching me how to pray.
And you know Dad, I'm going to do the very best that I can,
To preserve a way of life for folks like us, the Common Man."
"Well, time rocked along and I found I could still smile,
The Lord was good and I'd get a letter once in awhile.
But Sir, my life just went to pieces and I couldn't even pray,
When I read that wire - 'You Son was killed in action today!'
I said, Lord, Lord, I've had so little!
I've worked so hard to do my share,
To take my only Son now, it just dosen't seem fair!"
"Then suddenly before me just as plain as could be,
My Boy knelt beside me with his hand on my knee.
He said, 'Dad, you disappoint me! I never thought your faith would
wane
Why Dad, if you denounce our God and County, now, I died in vain.
I know you're loney and it's so hard to carry on,
But Dad, just remember you aren't the first to give your only Son.
And through the smoke of the battle, I never felt alone
For I knew you were a praying and wishing I was home.'
Right then my eyes were opened and God came back into view,
And he sent you here today, my friend, to tell my story to."
So as I left that little farm home,
I prayed - - Please let me understand,
That the hope of AMERICA lies in our faith in God and the COMMON
MAN!!

given at the Reunion in Louis-
future issues of the Hellcat News.
It is fitting and proper that they
be included with the Past-Presid-
will the letters depicting the first
two, then we will follow with one
per month until the June issue.
This will allow all to be published
before the next one is presented
at Seattle.
This gives me an opportunity
to inform one and all that Past-
He should be in fine fettle while
you are reading this.
Our good friend, Ex Wac, Libby
Sarnocinski, wife of Past Presid-
ent Stan Sarnocinski, has under-
gone open heart surgery. Last re-
port she had been moved from
the Intensive Care Unit in the
Albert Einstein Hospital in North
Pbilly. A few Prayers would still
be beneficial, even at this late
date. Reciprocity is tough to
negotiate but everyone of us uses
it in some fashion. Send them a
'get well' card.
The Certificate of Membership,
which should have been received
by now, is for your proud pleasure
of having served with the 12th
Armored Division during it's war-
time service of 1942-1945. Those
of you that were active members
(paid) have received it. Frame
it!! Display it!! Enjoy it!! Show
it to your Local Posts for them
to copy.
I have started to receive don-
ations for the Patton Museum
Fund. A separate account will be
opened before you read this. The
Executive Council voted to place
Mrs. Brewer's gift in that 12th
Armored Division Association
Fund. Mancinelli was the first to
hit our Fund deposit. As time
moves forward we will show a
deposit thermometer for a guide.
I still like that K I A listing for
the Units.
I have window decals avail-
able, inside and outside, at eight
(8) for a dollar ($1.00). Just write
in what you will need along with
the money, please a check or
money order. Also the stickers,
'It's Great To Be A Hellcat' are
available, twenty for a dollar
($1.00). They are of high gloss
finish, to be seen very readily, an
eye catcher. They will stick on
luggage, doors, windows, envelop-
es, any desirable location.
Check over the 'lost buddy' list.
It could have a neighbor, or a
'lost Buddy' of your own. Just
notify your Unit Rep, your mem-
bership committee, or your Exe-
cutive Secretary and they will do
the rest. You can sit back and
say ,"I contacted that Hellcat".
October Roll Call -
HAVE YOU FOUND A BUDDY?
HAVE YOU PAID YOUR DUES?
These two questions are imper-
ative in the life of the 12th Arm-
ored Division Association. Without
dues there is no treasury to pay
the bills for the Association.
There would be no Hellcat News
without dues, four dollars of your
dues goes to the printing and
mailing costs of our fine news
paper. Remember that the Hellcat
News is yours, it is the only paper
you subscribe to that carries
news that is only of interest to
you. How many other news mon-
thlies can you purchase for a
dollar per three copies? How
many other organizations charge
only one dollar to belong? The
five dollars you spend each year
to be a Hellcat is the best five
dollars you will spend all year.
Now if you really want to feel
good when you send in your dues,
send along a booster of five doll-
ars and help a buddy who might
not have the five dollars and
might miss an issue of the Hell-
rat News with your picture and
his in it. Send in news when you
send in dues - all the other Hell-
cats like to know what is happen-
ing at your place!!
Someone found a lost buddy
when they found you! Can you
remember how you felt when you
got that first word that there was
a 12th Armored Division Associa-
tion and that someone had cared
enough to find you and tell you
about it? If every Hellcat could
find just one of our lost buddies
and bring him home to the Assoc-
iation, our membership would be
5400 instead of 2700 and think
what the reunions would be then!
Fellow Hellcats; Still recover-
2 years ago. Had problems to
overcome. Wife, Daughters and
Grandchildren are my best med-
icine. The Hellcat News always
brings back fond memories. I re-
member Col. Bensel as Lt. Ben-
good guys. Stephen McPartland
was old Sgt. Packy of 'Packy's
Brooklyn Pub, Schnertheim Bran-
ch". He ran a great Pub. I had
a picture of the sign on the build-
ing somewhere. Tacky' was a
poor armament man. Shot him-
self through the hand with a
'screwed' up German gun. Saw
him at one of our earliest Reun-
ion in New York. Glad that he
became a member again. I'd sure
like to see some of these Hellcats
that I read about. Always get a
change when I think of the fellows
from our Company.
Sorry for the absence of col-
umns in July and August but as
I have mentioned before, they
can be hectic months out here in
the fabulous Long Island Hamp-
tons and this year was no excep-
tion. We had one of the busiest
summers in spite of the gas
crunch and servicing the vacation-
ing here becomes a near 24 hour-
a-day job. Aside from that my
theatre left the United Artists
Circuit and became an independ-
ent operation. I remained with the
the new owner and that also re-
quired extra time. Among the
many notables that we entertain-
ed and/or saw all summer were
Cliff Robertson, Mariel Heming-
was informed of it by many of
my friends who saw it.
each other since. At the time of
They thank me for copies of the
press notices that we got from the
various wire services during our
combat days and as printed in
the New York papers. They did
not make the Louisville reunion.
He closes with the hope that he
sees everyone again soon.
From Bonita Springs, Fla.
comes a short letter from Law-
rence Meyer (Div Hq-G-3). He re-
grets that he too could not make
the Louisville reunion and would
like to have been there. They
have sold their home of 33 years
in Gas City, Ind. and are now
living in a mobile home where
they have been spending the win-
oughly enjoy the HCN although
we recognize very few names of
the many we knew during duties
with the 12th activation to 4 July
1945.
Floyd Kettler (Div Tns) sends
dues from Sharon Springs, NY
and tells us that he retired from
the local school board in June
after 20 years of non-paid service.
For this, he received honors from
the State School Boards Assn.,
Local Board of Education, Local
Teacher's Assn. but most of all
from the Student Council. Sharon
Springs Central School was
Floyd's Alma Mater and also all
four daughters also graduated
from same school.
Carl Tielsch (Div Hq) sends
dues from Elk Grove, 111. and a
short note informing us that he
is healthy and enjoying life pre-
attorney in legal service at Illi-
a tour in the Peace Corps. Carl
enjoys the HCN and appreciates
the job that all who are connected
with it are doing.
Charles Danton (Div Hq) checks
in with dues from Odenton, Md.
He includes a short note saying
that he never wants to miss an
issue of the HCN. Nothing new
with him. Just hopes that the
Baltimore Orioles win the penn-
with dues and a letter from Long
Beach, Calif. Wilbur says in his
letter that he laughed up his
sleeve while during the gas
crunch, the politicians, Govern-
ment big-wigs and the big shots
of the East and West called WE
Californians a bunch of irrespons-
ible driveholics who were joy-rid-
ing and wasting all the gas.
Seems like Wilbur is a California
Angels fan and he too hopes they
go all the way. He remembers
Jimmie Reese, presently an
Angel Coach, being on the same
troop train that left Fort Mac-
Arthur, Calif, and headed for
Camp Campbell back in '42. He
recognized Jimmie at that time
as being the Ex-New York
Yankees player as he was a
great Yankee fan. Along the base-
ball lines, Wilbur is very elated
that the L.A. Dodgers are way
back in the standings as he is
a Dodger hater from way back.
He hoped to take a motor trip
to Washington and Oregon if not
stymied by the gas shortage. Wil-
bur is searching out Casimir Gor-
don (714-Sv. Co.). Can anybody
By now everyone has the news-
letter about the Reunion in Owens-
boro, the one by our new Execut-
ive Sec, Dave Scobié. Many of
you missed a real good time. Jim
and Martine Wilson, our Host and
Hostess, went all out, and our
thanks to them, from the bottom
of our hearts. Everything was so
perfect that we decided to go
back there next year, same Hotel,
the Executive Inn, the same
month, days 7th to 10th, 1980.
Start putting some bucks aside so
we can fill that whole place.
You can see that I'm still your
Unit Rep. The person I had hoped
would take over hasn't answered,
nor was he at the Reunion Write
me a letter or I'll write your
wives about your 'Remember
whens', no, I'll take thai, back
'cause it's a long drop from 502
in that Executive Inn, and some
of you may know my 'remember
whens'!!! Besides, I don't bounce.
We sure missed Jim and Dot
Flanagan, D, but he had a good
excuse, going to hospital for a by-
pass operation for his heart. Jim,
our best wishes and prayers will
be with you. And Dot, the offer
still stands, if he dosen't behave
we'll have a few of the Wolf pack
at the door and he'll behave or
else.
Bill and Florine Naylor, D, had
a surprise visit from the Moye's.
It must be something to open the
door and see one of your Buddies
standing there. All of us were
watching the door for Harry An-
wander, Hq, to walk through. He
never made the reunion as he
was laid up with the flu, and he
had to have it bad for he never
misses.
Pete Larco, B, was another
'no-show'. Seems he forgot the
date. That may sound funny but
the Wife and I darned near miss-
ed the plane back to Boston. I
had the flight tickets and had told
John and Virginia Brown, A, that
the flight was for 10-40 but I al-
ways like to be an hour ahead.
Come to find out the flight was
for 10-10 and we had about 20
minutes to get in that line for
boarding passengers and through
the 'zapper' and to the plane.
Made it with ten minutes to
spare.
Ken Robertson was also on the
sick list. Nothing you can do
when that bug gets to you. Hope
he and Harry has shaken the ills
and feel fine now.
I've just got to mention the fine
slides that Al Birkenstein, B, had
taken on his trip thru Greece,
Egypt, and Israel. Also Howard
Emmett's, A, slides of previous
Reunions. These are priceless.
Each year more new faces are
appearing for our history in pict-
ures.
Dave Scobie has a great idea
and I'll spread it around thru
this media. One day of the Re-
union weekend should be set a-
side for a 'COMPANY' day. The
members of each company in at-
tendance meet with the Buddies
from their company for a good
yak session about their individual
past. It could be a 10 to 4 or a
9 to 3 session, but one day should
be with your Buddies and their
wives. You could always leave
and join another group, or other
companies. A lot miss the round
table where we always swap our
company 'remember whens'.
George Moss, he's my "Arm-
ored Connection", was present
with his wife June. One thing a-
bout George, he just does not run
out of steam. He was busy the
entire time, collecting dues, an-
swering questions, giving advice.
He sat at his table and seemed
to be having the time of his life
promoting the 12th Armored Div-
ision Association. He gave me
some advice, "Red, I want the
names of all those present to get
in the Hellcat News." I borrowed
the roster book, wrote up the list,
but someone forgot to mention
that I had it (not George), and
everyone thought it was lost. All
the time I had it in my hands
while walking among those very
ones that were looking for it.
We finally got everyone signed
in and the COMPANY count was
like this - D,10 - C,4 - B,12 - A,16
- Sv-14 - and Hq, 17, plus the
wives and the families.
An interesting news item was
handed to me by some very proud
Grandparents, Glenn and Barbara
LaFond, A, while at the Reunion.
Seems their Daughter Sandra
gave birth to a premie baby boy,
weighing in at 2 pounds 5V2
ounces. It was transferred im-
mediately to the premie center
at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria,
Illinois. He was 40 days old when
At Hochfeldon, France standing in front of a wire factory
tie", Eugene Marosan and "Billy".
he left the premie center, and
Bruce William Boyer was now
weighing, soaking wet, 3 pounds 9
and % ounces. WOW!! Best wish-
es to Mr. and Mrs. Boyer and to
the Proud Grandparents, Barbara
and Glenn LaFond.
Received a very newsy letter
from Marv and Mary Novotne,
Hq. They had a wonderful trip
back to Minnesota. Mary Ann
asked if I minded if she wrote the
news as most men do not like
to write letters. So, you Gals
write the news even if you tell
me that everything is just fine.
The Novotne's have not missed a
reunion as yet, and Mary Ann
notes that there is a closeness
among those attending. It's not
like a business convention, but
like a Family get together, every-
one is interested in each other.
Closer than any group that I have
served with, the Legion, Town
Committees, any other group. It
is a sad day when we have to
depart for home. Men with tears
in their eyes, hugs and kisses
with the misty eyes, even though
we know we will see them next
year. Back to the Novotne letter.
Marv and Mary Ann have a
home that is about 125 years old
and they are renovating it to keep
out those Minnesota winds and
winters. She has a few extra days
now that there is a slow down
at the Ford plant. Put in a few
extra pieces of insulation while
you have the spare time.
Mary Ann had a breakdown on
the cost from Minneapolis to
Owensboro in their Chevy Vega.
This includes all of their pay-
ments to the 44th, dues to the 12th
Armored, postage, room, meals,
gas, for a round trip of 1,438
miles. It cost just $300.00. Wolf-
packers, that's a figure you can
use if you plan to go next year.
Here in New England it would
cost $250 to $300 just for a cottage
down on Cape Cod for a week,
PLUS everything else. So, you
can see that it is one heckuva
good vacation for the price. Do
what the Novotne's are doing,
plan to go right now, start putting
something in the piggy bank.
Marv is getting in a supply of
wood for the winter. Seems we've
gone backward in time. We all
depended on oil and gas and now
people are talking as they did
years ago, "I got 4 cords cut and
stacked, and need 3 more. That
will get me through til spring."
Watch Marv close. Here in New
England a 'face cord' (a rick in
the Midwest) sells for $115.00 or
so. Make sure he's stacking it
for your winter and doesn't have
a box car loaded for us in New
England. The whole of New Eng-
land is quite wooded and the State
Forests have certain periods for
cutting. THANKS FOR THE
SWELL LETTER!!!
Pictures are welcomed from
anyone that would like to have
them in the Hellcat News, please
no Grandchildren as there are too
many for us to spread around.
The picture is the best 'cause if
you send the negative and it is
lost, then there goes the chance
for any more reproductions. Do
not send a Polaroid or an instant
Kodak as they do not reproduce
the best. Put your name on the
back of the picture, and your
Unit (Company & Battalion) and
mail it in.
Had a short note from Don
Mercier, C, about the death of
Lt. William Westphal, C. Beth
Westphal send word to Don that
Bill had died March 10, 1979. They
had hoped to make the Reunion
at Ownseboro. Lt. William West-
phal 's name was mentioned in our
prayers.
Mercier, I have a request of
you. Why don't you and your
Committee plan the 'C Company
Reunion to be at the same place
as the rest of the Wolf pack? We
will meet in Owensboro again
next year, then someplace south
of Chicago, and then to Louisville.
It would be something to see 50
or more men and their wives
from 'C Company at a Wolf-
pack gathering!!! You could
still 'do your own thing'. Like the
men above points out, time is
short, and how nice it would be
if we could get that many Wolf-
packers together just once before
he says to the lot of us "Come
on, I've got a room for you."
Received a phone call from
Dave Scobie this AM informing
me of the death of his Wife's
Mother, Mrs. Nellie Peterson of
Holland, Mich. We, of the Wolf-
pack, send our deepest regrets
to all as your sorrow is our sor-
row.
Got my picture taken at the
Reunion, and believe me, some of
your expressions are priceless.
Got a lot of candid shots, many
did not know I was taking their
picture. Some of you guys are
still 'chow hounds'. Some of you
looked like you were waiting for
mail call. As soon as Scobie has
the Company pictures ready they
will appear in the Hellcat News.
In the meantime, if you want to
submit a picture, present or past,
please do so. No Polaroid or in-
stant Kodak.
The 'WOLFCALL' made men-
tion of Chris Bernard singing
Lanny Ross' version of 'A Sleepy
Lagoon' which was great. His in-
terpretation of Phil Harris was
Oct. 1979 HELLCAT NEWS Page 5
even greater. That was something
when Chris took the mike and out
came Phil Harris. Loma, keep his
voice in shape for he took a lot
of us back to the days of the
big bands. Keep him singing all
winter.
I don't like to repeat our news-
letter but Gwen 'MINNIE PEA-
RL' Howerton was better than
ever. Keep up that guitar pickin'
and singin'. Those HULA girls,
Arby Brannon, Rose Nardella,
Normalee Stein, and Jacque
Scobie must have taken lessons
from Dave Scobie, Hq, as he
seemed to be the most graceful
one on the stage. Or was it be-
cause he was watching Jacque,
his Wife, on his left, and Norma-
lee on his right and putting both
motions into one of his own.
Bob and Leslie Whittemore,
sang the familiar tunes from
'Sound of Music', 'South Pacific',
and 'Annie Get Your Gun'. The
old 44th is really loaded with that
talent, but I think what most of
them have is priceless, FRIEND-
SHIP.
You will soon be receiving a
copy of our new constitution of
the 44th Armored Tank Battalion
Association. Read it over so that
you will know what is expected
of each of us. Let your Officers
or your Company Unit Rep know
if you have any suggestions to
make this a greater Association.
Bee and I have just about got
out winter's cache put up - canned
and frozen, so let the big snows
come, we are ready. We even
have a Hel-cat buddy to thank for
a portion of it - Warren and Edna
Maue, 17th. Edna called a couple
weeks ago and said the beans and
tomatoes were about to take over
the farm so we went up to their
place and came back loaded —
with beans and tomatoes.
While we were there Warren
showed me a letter he received
A SUCCESS STORY - A HURRYING HELLCAT
(WITH A PAST AND A FUTURE)
John T. Williams, Sv-17, manager of Raw Materials and
Special Purchases for Rockwell International Corp., has been
elected Chairman of the Steel Group of the National Association
of Purchasing Management. It has 24,000 members nationwide.
John has been active as a Certified Purchasing Manager for 30
years.
Williams joined Rockwell as an assistant purchasing agent
for the New Castle, PA Axle Division of a predecessor company,
Timken-Detroit Axle Company.
Williams was an Officer in Service Company of the 17th
Armored Infantry Battalion. He served as President of the 12th
Armored Division Association for two consecutive terms, having
been elected at New York and Chicago, 1959-1961.
Johnny Doughboy, congratulations for the terrific position
that you have attained. All of the HELLCATS, from your back-
ground, know that IT'S GREAT TO BE A HELLCAT!!!!
from Jack Bernhard, B-17th. Jack
told how he discovered the 12th
Armored Division Association
through a fellow Moose member.
After he learned of the Associa-
tion he called a friend of his -
none other than Charlie Waller,
Hq-66th. Just a few days later
Moss sent me Charlie's dues re-
ceipt, so we've got another lost
buddy in the fold. OK, Charlie,
now send us some news about
yourself about the last 35 years.
Welcome, aboard, Charlie. I
couldn't place your face right
away but I called Jeep and he put
me straight right away. Address:
Rte. 1, Box 163, Hampshire, IL
60140. I'll bet I've been within
5-10 miles of your house 50 times
while driving the Northwest Toll-
way — maybe I'll look you up the
next time I'm up that way. Get
your reservation in for the Mid-
west Reunion, Charlie. It will be
held in Chicago next spring and
Bee and I will be looking forward
to meeting you, after 35 years.
Watch for an announcement and
reservation information in the
Hellcat News.
Got a brief note from Lee Maur-
er, A Co., of Little Falls, Minn,
expressing his regret about miss-
ing the Reunion, but he says,
"Our greetings to all of A Co.
and anyone else we have met at
previous reunions."
Also a note (through Moss)
from Mrs. Robert (Marge) Hay-
ner of C Co. She still enjoys the
Hellcat News and sends God
Blesses to all — thanks, Marge, I
don't know you but hope to meet
you at the Eastern Reunion next
spring.
A newsy letter from Jerry Mc-
Carthy, B Co. He expressed re-
gret of his inability to be with us
at Louisville, but he had some
problems — as we all do occas-
ionally. We all missed you, too,
and I'll look forward to meeting
you in Stroudsburg in the spring.
Jerry has been in the reserves
until June 27, 1979.
Got a letter (through Jeep)
from Chuck Carlson, C Co. (St.
Petersburg) also sorry he had to
miss Louisville. He has fallen on
health hard times. He has been
confined to bed for most of the
time — 1349 66th Ave., So. 33705
— come on, fellas, let's drop
Chuck a few lines and show him
we still do care about our old
buddies. Chuck says, "I have said
before that I never met a man
that I thought more of than Gil-
bert Heine. And, again, thanks
Sarg." How's about that??!! That
should shake up the whole state
of Nebraska.
Luke Gallo, B Co., explains his
absence from Louisville. We're
sorry, too, Luke you could not be
there, you certainly missed a
wing-dinger. We'll still have a
good time in Stroudsburg next
spring.
Tony Dispenziere, Hq, and wife
Fran expect to get together with
Jeep and Betty in Florida some-
time this Fall or Winter. I can
believe that will be a fun, fun
meeting — sure wish we could
be with them.
Lee (the semi-retired doctor)
Ghormley, Hq, is deep into the
outdoor - environmental - sailing
- backpacking bit. He told me in
Louisville that he went to a speci-
al ski patrol school and I believe
he is now a qualified ski patrol
rescue squad member. What a
great way to use your talents
and keep them from getting rusty
in retirement. I taught Biology
and Conservation Education many
years ago in Wisconsin and he
and I talked about "edible wild
foods" while at Louisville. Lo
and behold he and Marie sent us
the neatest cookbook you ever
laid eyes upon . . . How To Pre-
pare Common Wild Foods. We've
already had milkweed pods in
stewed tomatoes, chickweed salad
and can't wait till spring to
have boiled cattail, fiddle head
salad, and sheep sorrel.
Last week Bee was rummaging
through a file cabinet in the base-
ment and came across a lot of
mementos, and among them were
5 issues of our old Bn scandel
sheet — The Spearhead. Now,
how many of you old 66ers re-
member that? Reporters were:
Joseph Driesbach, A Co., William
Olson, B Co., Unca A very, C Co.,
Whalan Smith, D Co., Donald
Duck (?), Hq. Co., Jack Bonstell,
Bn. Hqs., T/5 Spurway, Sv. Co.,
and "Rocko" Rock, Med. Editor-
in-chief was none other than Pfc.
John B. Lewis, Hq. Co., and Jack
Bonestell was staff cartoonist.
I'll try to include something from
them each month that might be
of interest to someone. Maybe the
mention of some names will jog
some memories — it did mine.
Here's a few samples:
Bn. Hq. — T/5 Romano is back
from the dispensary; was "cronk"
with a cold . . . back with us
again; knife, fork 'n spoon a-
breast. (June 21, 1945)
A Co. — Lt. Pollack returned
from a rip roaring time in "Par-
ee" and is now convalescing in
the hospital from tonsillitis. (June
28, 1945)
C Co. — That table in the chow
hall with T/Sgt's George W. Car-
penter, Bill Winsor, Lloyd Hem-
me, Reid Levia, Charles Fitty,
and Lloyd Lundien seems to give
birth to most of Unca Avery's
rumors. Tho one can't overlook
"Poo" Stordeur for somma the
best! (June 28, 1945)
Sv. Co. — What T/5 name of
wolf, received a bouquet of flow-
ers, and a big kiss from a Frau-
lein recently? Best news is no
more undercover fratten. Sounds
good, but when do we go home?
"Swede" Johnson has a head
on his shoulders. He picks a
school teacher to go swimmin'
mit. Steinried still insists he is
pickin' apples.
Dear Friends;
Much as we hate to start a
column this way, sometimes it
can-not be helped. "C" Co. has
lost a "Buddy"! Notice came
from his son just in time for
this printing. Letter follows;
(Dear Sir, My father, Park How-
ard, passed away on August 14,
1979, he died of heart failure. The
,82nd must have been quite a unit,
he sure was proud to have served
with you. signed - Carl Howard)
Mr. Howards address is,
McGhee Tyson AB
Knoxville, TN 37901
Park Howard has been on our
records for a long time, he was
a paid member in 1968-69. We've
sent mail to him since we be-
came Unit Reps. We have never
received a letter from him but
we have also never had one re-
turned by the Postal Dept. during
the past eight years. The address
we have had for Mr. Howard is
Route No. 3, Pathfork, KY 40863.
We had a phone call from
Millie around the end of August
she said, sorry to have missed the
Reunion in Louisville but we had
already made plans to go to
northern Wisconsin. Eddie is still
driving trucks and has about 4 or
5 years before retirement. I'm
still playing the Concertina and
working out in the yard. Our
vegetable garden is really doing
well this year. Hope to see the
whole gang in 1980. She also said
to say hello to the Caravelli's
and the rest of the gang who al-
ways attend Reunions.
From Dan Melli; Hope you are
all well and enjoyed the 33rd an-
nual Reunion. I regret I could
not attend.
Back on the home front, we
have just weathered out "David"
who played hovac with our area.
Public Service will be months
getting us back in shape. Our
Son-in-Law is a "lineman" and
he is being shipped to New York
with his crew to help up there.
This old storm just missed our
annual Labor Day family picnic.
We had my wife's two sister's
from Oklahoma for a week, they
came in for the picnic. It was a
real blast. As usual every one
got thrown into the pool except
me. We talked to Rita on the
phone and she is fine, so all is
well in N. J.
Boss "George" says due's are
coming in fairly good so keep do-
ing what you've been doing. I'll
report the total next month. In
the meantime remember you get
cut off by Oct. 1979. Begin now
to plan on the next Reunion. Mar-
jorie says the following poem be-
longs here.
In an ancient wall in China,
Where the brooding Buddhas
blink;
Deeply graven is this message:
"It is later than you think."
Some wise Oriental wrote it, In
the days that used to be
For the ones who watched in vain
for, Ships that never went to
sea.
For the busy ones who hurried,
Past the flowers by the way;
For the ones who sighed "Tomor-
row", When adventure cried
"Today"!
Just six words that tell a story .
. . With the past a golden link.
Go enjoy yourself, my brother,
Robert Claus B-92 in 1945.
The difficult time I ever have
when I am trying to put together
our monthly column for the Hell-
cat News is when I must report
about the passing of one of our
comrades. Received a very sweet,
and sad letter from Elizabeth
Byrne informing us that her hus-
band, and our friend, Thomas J.
Byrne (Hq-Sv) passed away April
26th. Tom had been ill only a
week and was in intensive care
all that time, his doctor was treat-
ing him for the flu, but he had
been a diabetic for 20 years, so
complications had set in which
effected his heart and kidneys.
For the past 30 years Tom had
worked for the Board of Educa-
tion in Móntela ir, NJ and was
very well thought of by all stu-
dents and teachers alike. To Eliz-
abeth and all of the family may
we offer our most profound con-
dolences and deep sympathy on
your great loss.
News and dues have been ar-
riving quite well this past month,
keep up the goodies fellows, we
need both — NEWS & DUES —
Now is the time to re-up for the
79-80 membership year, so, for
those of you that haven't done so
already, get out the old check
book and get your DUES in NOW.
Bob Claus (B) sent dues and
news - Retired on disability Dec-
ember 73 - They have two sons
in the service, Bob is a crew
chief on helicopter stationed at
Fort Carson, Colorado - Rick is
in an Engineering Battalion at
Fort Stewart, Georgia. Three
daughters married, and son and
daughter at home - Ten grand-
children and one great grand-
daughter - Thanks Bob, let us
hear from you again real soon.
Ed Jarosz (D) wrote that he
was sorry he missed the Big
Party in Louisville, said he'll
make it one of these days. He
retired two years ago, and if he
gets down Florida way he said I
will stop over and see "MY CAP-
TAIN BILL" (Bill Bartholomew
was C. O. of "D" Troop) He ends
his note with Bless you all. Bless
you also, Ed.
Earl and Dorothy Lewis (B)
had reservations for the Reunion,
but had to cancel at the last
moment as Dotty had to enter the
hospital for an operation, and as
soon as she was released, Earl
had to enter. Earl is unable to
drive too far from home, but will
attend a reunion when it is held
closer by Troy, Ohio - We do
hope that both of you have com-
pletely recovered by now, keep us
informed.
Donald Thompson (A) sent dues
Weary and happy bunch of guys of Third Platoon, V% B"
Troop, 92nd Recon. Photo taken on VE Day, May 1945 near
Kufstein, Austria. Eldon Kohler sent us the photo.
and booster, also some good
news. The good news is that he
and his wife, Charlotte, have im-
proved quite a lot after a rough
time for the past year due to
heart attacks, also major surgery.
They had big plans made for the
Reunion in Minneapolis last year,
but had to cancel. Now that the
two of them are on the road to
a complete recovery, possibly
they can make Seattle in 1980.
Don and Charlotte have 3 child-
ren, all married and doing real
well. They also have 5 grand-
children, and expecting another
one in December. (We sure hope
the grandparents will make it
thru the delivery in good shape,
we know the Mama and Papa
will make it.) Thanks for the let-
ter folks, take care of yourselves.
Frank Terrano (Hq-Sv) really
laid some nice words on us.
(Reps, note) (It's hard for me to
express what I can read between
the lines of some of the letters I
receive - it's something that you
just know is there, but hard to
put into words for you to under-
stand, without reading the letters
yourselves.) Getting back to
Frank Terrano - and he said -
Received my copy of the Hellcat
News, and it was with deep regret
I read of the passing of Carmelo
Amato - We came home together
and spent many days in each
others company - I know I have
a picture of him with his life
jacket on posing on the deck of
the ship that brought us home.
Our heartfelt sympathy to his
loved ones. Another regret I have,
is not attending the Reunion in
Louisville, Gosh, you have no idea
how I yearned to see my old
buddies again - But due to the
illness of my wife, and other
complications it was altogether
impossible. Maybe some day,
Good - Lord willing, we will make
an appearence. I am well as can
be expected for a man approach-
ing his 72nd birthday. Still work
part time at a neighborhood drug
store, going on three years and
they treat me like a King. (They
should old buddy, because to us,
you are a King) In closing Frank
really made me feel super, he
said - Incidently, met a very
good friend of mine who was
down in the dumps - know what
I did? Gave him one of your
smiles, now he is good as ever.
Thank you old buddy . . .
Thats all for this month fell-
ows - still have more to tell you
Kats & Kittens, will do so next
month. Please write - and by all
means, GET THOSE DUES IN,
PRONTO . . .
Remember: IF YOU SEE
SOMEONE TODAY WITHOUT A
SMILE, GIVE THEM ONE OF
YOURS ....
Til next month . . .
Many benefits results from our
reunions, one of which is the de-
luge of mail that arrives shortly
after. We won't acknowledge each
dues and booster supporter since
you will have your membership
card by now. Warren A. Spitler
reports "Was unable to attend the
reunion due to earlier engage-
ments and work schedule. My
wife and I visited long time friend
and comrade of C Co. in Eugene,
on the 600 yard rifle range. (John
McAfoos was not yet with the Bn)
At Camp Campbell was with Hq
Co. but had a lot of special duty
at Bn Hq. while McAfoos and
Edlred were away at school learn-
ing how to be an adjutant and/or
personnel officer. In April '43
cadre'd out on the 134th to start
up a separate Ord Bn. Maj. War-
rick, Capt. Schmidt and five
other left the 134th for the new
Bn. Later I left the Ord and
Armored Force for the Army Air
Ore. We visited Clair Smith and
wife and his son Wayne and fam-
ily of Salem, Ore. Our last visit
there was in 1948 - some 31 years
ago. Our visit there was some-
thing we really enjoyed and some
friend we have high praise for."
Along with dues we heard from
Clair L. Smith and he commented
on the good times they had with
the Spitler's. Clair says we shared
the same tool box for 3 years.
I guess you could call that real
gogetherness. Mutt Senczek is
still at home in Westland, Mich,
and regretted that he could not
make the reunion. His health gave
way last winter but he's on the
road to recovery now. He hopes
to get some fishing in before the
year is out.
Macdonald E. Newberry - "A"
from Sharon Springs, Kansas.
"Just because you haven't re-
ceived a note before now, isn't
that we don't appreciate the Hell-
cat paper. It is great to read,
we both take our turn at it. Just
to let you know sometime we'll
make one of the reunions some-
place after we retire by the mid-
dle of next year. We both have
worked for a local Farmers Co-
op here and the last twenty years
have gone too fast. With our
thoughts of all present and past
fellow men - Thanks."
A warm welcome to John C.
Bond - Akron, Ohio - "Am send-
ing in my dues early this year
with a booster that is not really
a booster as last year, after I
had diddled around too long, some
kind and real booster paid my
dues. I do enjoy the Hellcat News
even though I was not with the
134th long and was not a "Har-
vester" Started at Camp Perry,
from OCS with Earle Hoyt, Woody
Aten etc. Was at 180 No. Mich-
igan in Chicago with Col Van
Slyke when he interviewed a lot
of prospective recruits. Also re-
member while at Camp Perry,
acting as adjutant for the post,
weekly full dress retreat parade
Corps and ended up there as a
B-29 radar navigator flying miss-
ions to Japan from Guam. After
the war stayed in the reserve and
finally hung it up in 1974 as Com-
mandant of the Akron, Ohio
USAR School. In civilian life I
have worked for Goodyear aero-
space continously but expect to
hang that up also, come the end
of this year." Glad to hear from
you John reminding us of some
of the early organization changes
we had.
Ken Bradstreet at the reunion
really inspired some of the Hell-
kittens to write - here's one from
Ted Putman's wife Florence.
"Ted just doesn't seem to find
time for letter writing. Middle
age is a bad time. We seem to be
very busy but the minute you do
sit down you fall asleep. He
sleeps thru more TV programs.
The 134th was very well repre-
sented but when we went out to
get our roster sheet Sat. nite
someone had stolen it. (Note -
good old CT Moore made sure I
received it)
I like the dedication of Howard
Murphy "A" - I undestand he is
on the board of a nursing home
in Wise, and missed the chance
the weekend of the reunion to at-
tend a symposium on "Sex after
Seventy". Charlie Walls sent a
supply of stories and jokes that
will come in handy when the mail
drops off. Thanks also for your
letter - "have had a bit of a bout
with medics but all seems OK
now. See Harry and Peg Malcolm
often. They are doing well. Harry
is always working around his
beautiful home. Harry was along
while suit shopping. He under-
stands about colors and what
looks good and goes with what.
Was also good to have him around
for final fit. Harry understands
about those things. Sure is a great
guy. Jim Fitzgerald is working
again. Guess he does not want to
get out of the habit of a big tax
bill. I am planning on a trip for
a couple months. Expect to leave
about Sept. 17th - stop and see
from him." Enjoy your travels,
Charlie, and keep up the good
support for this column.
Howard Murphy's wife Irene -
really did write a letter. I'll have
to boil it down to stay within our
alloted space. Thanks for the informative
letter. "John McNaul
sort of twisted my arm until I
agreed I would write a few lines
for Murph. We drove down rather
liesurely arriving early at a reunion
for the first time ever.
Looking forward to Seattle and
1980 reunion. Murph shipped out
of San Francisco for the Pacific
in June '42 and returned in Mar.
'43 when he came back to the
states for OSC so we'd both like
to make it to Seattle. Numerous
"first timers" were there. I met
two couple who were 'first timers'
from 134th. Murph was delighted
to see Geo C. Pfaffenberger whom
he had not seen since the reunion
in Chicago at the Conrad Hilton.
Sparky Young and Phyllis and
one of their daughters were there
- we have not seen them very
many times before either. Murph
send our deepest heartfelt sym-
what are they all going to do
Where, oh where are all my
I'm not sure if the Post Office
is mad at me, the 493rd or the
12th Armd Div Assn, but my first
article was returned by them. I
Knew that Owen Schumacher was
a hard act to follow but, send it
back, that hurt.
I am sure that everyone who at-
tended the Louisville reunion will
agree that it was the best ever.
Imagine seeing old friends for the
first time since the war ended in
1945. I did recognize some of
them but had to admit defeat on
others. Anyway it sure was good
to see them. It is also a real
pleasure to see the old friends
that have been attending in the
past. It was a double pleasure for
Kay and I as our Daughter 1LT,
Mary Beth and her friend Gwenn
Tucker, 1LT, spent some time
with us and attended the banquet.
They are both Company Comm-
anders at Ft. Knox. It was our
pleasure kids.
My old buddy Marion Davenport
and his better half Hannah, call
me from time to time with names
and addresses of new members
that they have tracked down. We
The 493rd at Louisville were (Front row) Gordon, Burn, Lattig, Cotter, Panack, Marinelli
and Czeiner. (Second row) Shoemaker, Higgins, Buckley, AAcCurdy, Ament, Boland and Cone.
(Third Row) Boyle, Heineman, Sample and Zan eski goofing off.
all appreciate the effort and
money spent in this research and
signing of new members. Keep
up the good work, sure would be
nice if each of us in the 493rd
could come up with some new
members. He sent checks cover-
ing memberships for Les Miller
of 3621 Northfield Drive, Gibsonia,
PA 15044. His health is not good
and a note from some of his fri-
ends would sure be appreciated.
Gilman Rundberg lives at Rt. 9,
% Badger Motel, Chippewa Falls,
WI 54729. He did manage to get
the chow through to us most of
the time. His health is also not
the best and á note from A Btry
men would make him feel better.
Grover Waldron (A) of the 6th
section lives at 2210 Russel SW,
Roanoke, VA 24015. Grover, lets
see if you can come up with some
more guys from the 6th section.
Thanks Marion for the three new
members from A Btry.
I have a supply of reservation
forms from the Washington Plaza
Hotel in Seattle for those 493rd
people that plan to attend the 1980
convention July 2nd thru 5th. We
want to see all 493rd people again
out there.
Tony Couch of Service Btry in-
formed me at the convetion that
Jerry Davenport of C Btry was
ill and would welcome hearing
from his friends, his address is:
1800 Little Yorka, Houston, TX
77093 phone 713-694-4505.
Owen Schumacher sent a couple
of nice letters. Sure good to hear
from him and Tillie. I think that
everyone from 493rd owes Owen
and Tillie a standing ovation for
the fine informative columns in
the Hellcat News over the past
few years. I want them to know
that we really appreciated their
time and efforts of the past and
we know that they will continue
to be loyal supporters and re-
cruiters for the Assn. He passed
along some notes: Elsie Nelson,
sister of Emil Meyer (B) motor
sgt. sent his check and tells us
that Emil is in a nursing home
resulting from a stroke a few
years ago. George Ellis is on the
road to recovery and is now able
to do some fishing with his Doctor
for a partner. Hurry and get well
George so that we can see you at
the reunions in the future. Owen
said that he talked to Dorrell
Moore since the reunion and the
Martha was "sweet as usual"
and Dorrell was "crabby as
ever". We all enjoyed the pre-
sence of their daughter Genevieve
at the reunion. Please come again.
Otto Schmalfeld regretted not be-
ing at Louisville but some pro-
blems came up to keep him away.
B Btry had three first timers at
Louisville: Salvador Delgado, Vir-
gil Jones and Walter Johnston.
A Btry had Paul Gosser, Marion
Owen, Jack Kurtz and Mrs. Sam
Foster as first timers. These,
with the rest of us, made for a
really fine group and the largest
ever. Lets have more next year.
I realize that this sounds like
an Able and Baker report but so
far I haven't heard a thing from
Hq, Charlie and Service Btry's.
Lets get some news in from each
Btry for next time. Please guys
and gals write.
in the Hospital at the same time.
Ruth had had surgery and while
recuperating found that Ray had
been admitted in the Emergency
This happened on 27 June and
last reports are that Ray is doing
pretty good but still walks stiff
shoulder down back of his left
arm. As this happened in June
Ruth and Ray were unable to at-
Executive Secretary wherein they
were looking forward to attend-
cluded among those attending as
I reported last month. If you at-
tended the Louisville reunion
please let me know as we do not
have a record of your attendance.
Gladys and Ramon Hawell C-
joyed the reunion and they were
happy to see all the new faces.
They talked to Sarah Hawker and
found that Clyde was home from
the Hospital and doing OK. If
you remember Clyde had knee
trouble. Glad you're home again
Clyde. Now you have time to pre-
pare for the trip to Seattle.
Joe Ahles C-494, 4958 N. Karlov,
must quote Joe's letter - there is
no way I could condense it. He
writes, "One of the big events of
1979 was our great reunion at
Louisville, Ky. We the fortunate
people who attended will never
forget this reunion for its reunit-
ed us even closer together and
brought us a lot of new faces
from out of the past. I wish I
could put into words the sensa-
tion that sweeps over you when
you've met up with your old
Buddies.
PerhaDS a poet could put it in
words but I doubt it. You just
have to attend and only then will
you experience the thrill of a life-
time. A good many of us have
been blessed with good health and
have the opportunity to attend our
reunions and yet we never attend-
ed any of our big events. Just
think what our house bound bud-
die" would give to exchange
places with those of us who have
everything going for us in the way
of good health. Think about it and
then do something about it, make
the pledge now that you will be
one of the hundreds who will show
in Seattle. Most of us are still
young bucks, it is only when you
become a Senior Citizen that you
begin to realize that time is
running out. Being a Senior Cit-
to repeat my original quote.
Ken Bradstreet our First Vice
President of A-494 now in charge
of Vice writes that he is starting
a monthly ROLL CALL column in
which he intends to try to locate
lost, unfound, ex-members or
people who just will not answer
our cards, letters, or other efforts
to locate them. I shall do the
same in this column and by pub-
lishing names and past addresses
- which may go back to 1944,
there is that possibility that we
can find others. I recently found
a letter I wrote in 1974 to the 22
members of C-494 of whom I had
addresses. In this light I am in-
serting the following names and
last know addresses of people we
hope to locate. If you have a
name with an old address - please
send to me and I will publish plus
I shall try to locate with the
ways I know and have used to
some success. Individuals we
need to locate are:
Donald B. Emery - last address
419 South 18th Ave., Yakima,
Washington (1944 address)
Hayle J. Self - Lot 83, 2925 S W
28th Place, Gamisville, Florida
32608. 1975 address but now
moved.
Walter C. Christian - 133 6th Ave.,
Montgomery, West Virginia
(1944 address)
Kenneth P. Burns - 121 South 54th
St. Philadelphia, PA (1944 ad-
Jess L. Ferrell - Rt. 1, Welling,
Oklahoma (1944 address)
Patrick E. Flaherty - 1078 East
5th Street, St. Paul, Minn. (1944
address)
I will follow the suggested ways
of Ken Bradstreet in attempting
to locate these people. If you
live somewhere in their area will
you please try to find some trace
of them? If you have names and
former addresses of 494th people
please send to me and we shall
all try to locate them.
Have been furnished the names
of about 25 buddies of 494th who
are unable to or it would stretch
their budget to pay their dues.
Boosters are the way to go and if
you are so inclined - send along
$5.00 and a less fortunate buddy
will be a member - will receive
the Hellcat News and thank you
ever so much.
Since 1973 I have been trying to
Guess I'll start this article,
same as I did years ago after a
reunion by thanking Bob Saehloff
(Sv) for his wonderful resume of
the Louisville reunion. It certain-
ly was a classic.
Come on you son of a gun
The 495th is on the run
By Jumpin Jimini ....
We're out to win the BIMI.
Or we certainly are going to do
our damndest tryin'.
Thanks are in order to Laverl
Kennedy (152nd Signal) for bring-
ing in a buddy of ours into the
association. We welcome Art B.
Wickham (B) and do hope you
enjoy the HCN for many years to
come . . . and how about Harry
Woodward (Sv),.for the job he did
to get Clovis and Margaret Mc-
Donald to the Gait House all the
way from Texas. A note of thanks
came from Clovis and Margaret
(Sv) for the wonderful accomod-
ations and arrangements, for all
the hard work to the fellas re-
sponsible for this great reunion.
No need to tell us how much you
guys did enjoy it, it was written
all over your faces. Margaret
was overheard saying, "I've
never seen people enjoying them-
selves so much." It was their first
reunion and do hope it won't be
there last.
As much as Phil Mauger (B),
would like to have attended the
reunion, he just couldn't. Seems
as if it falls during the busiest
time of the year for him. Phil
still announces the races (harn-
ess) in Ohio . . . sorry to hear
about Charlene fracturing her hip
but glad to hear she is mending
well and recuperating at home . .
Anyone around that can help Phil
locate John Deluga (B). Also
sends his best regards to (Dave
Andrews (B) R. R. 1, Haw River,
NC 27258 - Ed)
Hey you guys, that's what you
have the Roster Directory for.
Look into it once in a while and
drop your buddies a line or two.
Also if any one gets under the
weather, let us know, a few cards
or letters from friends can help
speed up a recovery.
A nice note from Dr. John A.
Brown, (Hq-Med). Hi to all the
fellows who needed medical help
in '44 & '45 . . . Charlie Brock who
drove with the unit, stopped by to
say "hello" ... the same goes
to all my buddies in the 495th.
If Brock was in the 495th, hope
the good Dr. sends his address.
If he was attached to another
Service Battery of the 495th reunion men were (back row)
Tom Hefferman, Gus Walter, Clovis McDonald, Ray Danklefsen,
(Front row) Frank Degenero and Harry Woodward. Joe Couser
was missing for the picture. Tom and Clovis were first timers.
unit, still send his address. We
can use more members . . .
From Lyle Hoosline (C), some-
thing came up the last moment to
cancel our tour reunion plans but
am planning on making one of
the Midwest Conferences. Hope
to see you in Chicago in April,
Lyle. Believe that Hank Dojutrek
(C), is on the planning commit-
tee. So you have to know that it
will be a success.
Good ole Millie DeGenero kept
her word at the reunion to drop
a few lines periodically. Arrived
home safe and sound, enjoyed the
reunion immensely but as usual,
too short. At the present, we're
not planning on the Seattle reun-
ion. Frank and I (Sc) are plann-
ing on the Chicago get together
come April. Thanks for the snap
Millie, hope George Moss can find
a spot for those handsome guys
from Sv. Battery.
I contacted just about all the
members from last year and just
a short reminder. Let's do every-
thing possible to locate as many
of our buddies as we possibly
can. This whole year will be de-
dicated to this endeavor. Also
would like to thank all you guys
for your booster donations. A
check is also in the mail for 41
bucks, a booster donation from
all of those attending the reunion.
It was money left over from the
slush fund or Booze Fund, which-
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to
Frank and Millie DeGenero on
their 32nd wedding anniversay,
Sept. 20. It might take us till
April, but we'll drink to that . . .
The last two reunions were
really held together by two coup-
les who are really tops, Fred and
Olga Stillman (C) and Hank and
Joan Dojutrek (C). They had at-
tached rooms and you guessed it,
we used them as our meeting
room and after hour party-ing
and for our bull-sessions. Believe
me all 55 of us or most of us fit
in there. Brother what a sight but
you've never seen more laughter
than that anywhere else. Thanks
from all of us. We'll take the
heat off of you guys next year in
Seattle.
We think it's great to have you
guys send in your dues, and they
seem to be coming in pretty good.
Hey: it certainly doesn't hurt to
drop a few lines to go along with
the dues. Seeing the guys are so
hard to get to write, let's see if
we can wiggle some news out of
the girls. How about it??? Helen
Kline (Sv), Mary Harden (C),
Elaine Fowler (B), Mary Ed-
wards (Hq), Lucille Durliat (Sv),
Dorie Ostraat (A), Kathryn Casey
few lines and let us know what
the ole boys are doing. Will be
keeping my fingers crossed.
Dave Sloop is always reliable
and always good for some news.
Been feeling pretty good since his
operation seven years ago, due to
a tube and having to breathe
through his neck, makes it im-
possible to attend a reunion due
to all the smoke. Taking care of
the garden and doing odd jobs
as I know what I can do and can't
. . . Sure miss all my buddies
from the 495th and sure thought
Sgt. Fred Erichsen looked good in
the HCN. Dave next time you see
Everyone was looking forward
to seeing Bob Link (Sv) at the
reunion, but it just happened that
his son, a radio announcer, was
moving to Minot, N.D. at the
same time. We knew there had
to be a good reason.
Thanks to Roy and Rayóla
Danklefsen for a good account of
the Louisville reunion. Really en-
joyed the reunion. Had not seen
Clovis McDonald, Joe Couser,
Tom Heffenan and John Davis
for over 34 years, and always
great to see Harry Woodwards,
Gus Walters, Frank DeGeneros
and Bob Saehloff. Heard from
Clovis and John Davis and they
were thrilled with the reunion.
John Davis hasn't changed, be-
lieve me that guy is a barrell of
laughs.
Guess we'll sign off for now.
in touch. Till next month, I re-
First off I will take up the
matter of dues for they are now
past due and if it has slipped your
mind then sit down now and per-
form that task of sending in your
dues. No dues, no news and that
means no Hellcat News will be
on its way to you. Get with it to-
day for next month is too late.
All of the following have paid
their dues some with a little news
and some wrote letters, a special
thanks to those who wrote letters
or even notes. How can your
Buddies know what is happening
if you don't let them have a few
moments of your time to say at
least all is well.
Benjamin Bass, Hq, hello and
greetings from Chicago. Your
Hellcat News is very interesting
and I enjoy it. Keep up the good
work - good luck.
From the Medics, Robert Ad-
ams, I can't begin to tell you how
much my wife Billie and my sis-
ter June Broaddus and I enjoyed
the 33rd Hellcat Reunion in Louis-
ville.
Having been out of touch with
the 12th AD for over thirty years
I really didn't expect much of a
reception or much of an opport-
unity to participate, but the warm
cordiality displayed by all the
714th Members in particular and
the entire Division in general was
a pure delight to experience and
we felt right at home from the
moment we registered to the hour
we reluctantly departed. I'm most
grateful to Bob Head for having
resurrected me last September
and for his and Betty's hospitality
in Louisville. My thanks go also
to you and June and to all the
714th Members who made our
stay so memorable, and I hope
to see all of you again at future
gatherings.
A note from Ardith and Don
Walker, Medics, sorry about not
sending last years dues but we
both miss the Hellcat News and
do enjoy it and don't want to miss
an issue.
A Co's, Walter Baedke's wife
Ethel writes - We are fine here
and missed the Reunion but may-
be will be able to get to the Fall
get-together. We are having some
much rain. Know the farmers
need some hot dry weather, but
we have lots to be thankful for,
everything looks great. June 16th
our son Bruce got married, beli-
eve he's old enough at 32. Donna
is the only one left and takes her
practice teaching and then her
last semester of school.
George Beagle, A Co., just a
line with my dues to say hello.
Trust this finds all well and in
good spirits. We have been pretty
good healthwise. I had to take my
vacation in August so couldn't
make the Reunion, maybe next
year if it is in reach. We did go
to Maine. Not much news here
so will make this a big 10-4.
Also from A, Arnold Muenzen-
burger, Rita and I are fine and
hope all are the same.
Then from Frank Welliver, A,
Sorry to have missed Louisville
but our son Peter returned with
his wife from Germany after five
year tour, he is a Captain in
Military Int. We are expecting a
new grandchild anytime now and
will make a trip to Ft. Hauchuha,
Arizona to see it sometime this
month. Hope to see all of you
in Seattle next year.
George Wenrick another A Co.
member, thanks a lot for your ef-
forts to keep the A Co. gathering
going and this sure means a lot
to have the gang together. It
seems a little more intimate. Hop-
ing the weather has rained itself
out by convening time. We enjoy-
ed Fort Knox especially the in-
spection of the Recovery Vehicle.
See you in October.
I am now retired from Grum-
man Aerospace Corp, writes Ernie
Apps of Co. B, am enjoying re-
tirement very much. Sorry could-
n't make the Reunion but hope
for the next one.
Received our August issue of
the Hellcat News and was sorry
to read about Bill Goad. Glad to
hear Harry Kettler is still around
and kicking. Betty Beckadic's
Christmas Card came back as
did ours, marked address un-
known. So says Charles Fricker
of B Co. I am semi-retired and
have a small business in the
backyard and Cass is still work-
ing in the bank as she has for 13
years and hope she continues for
a few more years so I can stay
semi-retired. We were blessed
with a beautiful grand-daughter
18 months ago but has a heart
problem and is due for open
heart surgery as soon as she gets
old enough. Sorry we missed so
many Reunions but Cass' vaca-
tions never coincide with the
dates.
William F. Koenig, B Co., The
whole family enjoys the Hellcat
News and the Get-Togethers when
we can make them, sorry we
missed so many. Bill still works
at the lumber yard but enjoys
not being the boss.
The family is rapidly growing
up and away, the two oldest boys
are teachers, Mary, our only
daughter will be a Sophomore in
college and the two boys at home
are a Junior and Freshman. All
of the activities keep Mom and
Pop "on the move". We are also
looking forward to our second
year with a Foriegn Exchange
Student in our home. Last year
he was Guadalajara, Mexico and
really enjoyed a wonderful year.
The boy this year comes from
Monterey, it is really a wonderful
experience. It has been a good
year here despite the long dry
spell hay and oat crops did well
and the corn looks promising.
Our best to all.
B Co's, Ira Schobel just a little
note that my youngest son is just
21 and this makes me feel old.
The older son is an actuary with
the Social Security in Baltimore
which we visited last month. I
would like to express my thanks
and admiration for the efforts
made by the officers of the Assn.
Everything seems so well organ-
ized and the Hellcat News has
never looked more professional.
Good work.
Edward Cagliero, C Co., your
always mad about no news so
thought I'd help out a little. Took
a trip to Europe last May for 24
days Via Globus Gateway Tours.
Visited nine countries England,
Holland, Germany, Austria, Yugo-
slavia, Italy, France, Monaco
and Switzerland. Had a very en-
joyable trip, one of the highlights
was going through Rudesheim,
Germany where I was stationed
in 1945. It sure changed in the
last 34 years. Wish I could have
spent more time there we only
stopped for lunch. I was glad to
see it again.
One of my daughters got mar-
ried last February and is doing
well. That is all the news I have
for now and hope all my Buddies
are in as good as health as I am
at present.
I really need news and am look-
ing for more of it but then there
is only so much space allowed
to each Rep and I am near the
end of my three columns for this
month so will put in the rest
next month.
ROLL CALL
KEN BRADSTREET
1st VICE PRESIDENT
It does not seem too far in the
past that I remember the shadow
of a man walking past my bunk,
blowing a whistle in the early
hours of dawn. When he retracted
his steps shouting "Ten minutes
to roll call!" This meant pulling
on your clothes, put on your
boots and run outside to line up
facing the very noisy individual.
He was usually in a very sullen
mood due to his untimely rising.
This was not of his own choosing,
but rather a case of stripe versus
bar. After a series of rasping
commands, his will prevailed up-
on us all even though the stupor
of slumber still hung on. Still in
the rasping voice he called the
name of each man, expecting in
return a reply of affirmation
from all. This man many times
went beyond the call of duty, even
reading the roll with a flashlight
in the dimness of the dawn to
make sure that each of his char-
ges were within his domain and
susceptible to his care. After
making sure that all were there,
he turned his back to them and
shouted into the dusky dim half
light to a shadow which faintly
resembled a man, "All present or
accounted for, Sir." We never,
never, knew who that shadow was
but we knew that he was inter-
this is unlikely.
Keep the thought that it won't
be long till the next Reunions
and Meetings. Seattle 4th of July
weekend and the Eastern, Mid-
west, Far West and the South-
east, dates will be forth coming
so watch for them and remember
"It Is Great to be a Hellcat".
ested in our well being, or why
would he send the man to get
us out and count us at that time
of day, under those conditions?
I guess he felt a comradeship
with us and due to a complex
of some sort did not want to take
the chance of losing the feeling
by appearing in bright daylight.
This bit of thought stirs more
memories and questions. Where
are some of those buddies who
stood with us at roll call? Can
the man with the whistle still say
"All present and accounted for."
It is now our time to read the
roster and report "Twenty men
missing and not accounted for".
Our lost buddies are as valuable
to us as we were to the man with
the whistle. When he had a man
missing, he pulled out all the
stops and searched until the miss-
ing was found. It was his duty
and it is our duty to find or
account for all of our lost buddies.
You ask yourself how this can
be accomplished. The answer is
very easy! By hard work and
never giving up! First go through
old letters and see if you might
have an address that you had for-
gotten. Look for old rosters, there
are some still around. When the
lost buddy rosters come out in
the Hellcat News, look for those
in your area by using the City
Directory, or the Phone Book. If
you find him, call him, he will be
happy to hear from you. Then get
his name to George Moss so that
he can again get back in touch
with his buddies.
If you have an old roster with
old addresses, do not feel that
they will not help for they will
do the job. For the first try or
for subsequent trys use post-
cards. Believe it or not - they
are read by many people - the
mail man - friends - residents at
the address and in most cases are
passed on to acquaintances of the
buddy you are trying to find! In
starting your search pick the
areas of small population first,
the buddy from the small town
usually went back home and
stayed within a hundred miles of
there. Also the town clerks and
postal people know who he is
and know his relatives. After the
small towns go to populations of
50,000, then 70,000, then the go-
ing gets rough. In the larger
cities you must use people who
live in the area, the postmaster
(for a small fee), the Chamber of
Commerce, the City Clerk or re-
corder. In all cases be sure to
clarify the fact that you are look-
ing for a buddy that you have lost
contact with since WWII. You will
be surprised how many people
want to become part of the search
and how many pleasant letters
they will write to you. (another
reward of the search). Be sure
to include any old address on the
card and if possible when he lived
there. An example is as follows;
Dear Sirs,
I am writing to ask your help
in locating a buddy of mine who
served with me in the 12th Arm-
ored Division in WWII. His name
is John Doe and he lived at 915
So. Oak St. in your city in 1947.
I would appreciate any help or
information you can give me. I
have important information and
news for him.
Thank you,
X. X. Smith
222 Podunk Rd.
Anycity, U.S.A.
Even if they do not remember
you, curiosity takes over and
nine times out of ten you will
get an answer. It is the first step
in becoming a Hellcat and enjoy-
ing it for the rest of their lives.
The rest is up to you and the
ai^ociation, making him welcome
and helping him get back into the
comradeship we all enjoy by writ-
ing to him and making him know
that we are all glad to have him
home again.
Other sources of help in the
search are members of the As-
sociation living in the area he
came from, the Army Archives
Record Section, The Locator
Army Times.
I am sure that any Hellcat will
help locate a buddy (if not, most
generally he will assign his Hell-
kitten to the job and take it from
me, those ladies get the man).
The Army Times is a weekly
newspaper that has a circulation
of 150,00 ex-service men. The ads
in the paper are free of charge.
The address is 725 School SW,
Washington, D.C. 20024. In using
this source of help be sure to
send your buddies name, rank if
known, unit and division, his last
known address plus your own
name and address.
Since the Privacy Act of 1974
prohibits it, the Personnel Center
in St. Louis, Missouri cannot re-
lease individual addresses. The
Center has developed a procedure
that should solve the problem for
those who are anxious to locate
a former service friend.
First, prepare and place your
correspondence in a Stamped
envelope bearing the intended re-
cipient's name, plus your own
name and address.
Then write a request that your
former service friend's address
be place on the Stamped envelope
and forwarded to him.
Finally, place both your request
and the stamped envelope bear-
ing your letter into a common
envelope and address it to; Com-
mander U.S. Army Reserve Com-
ponents and Administration Cent-
er, Attn: AGUS - PSD, 9700 Page
Boulevard St. Louis, Missouri
63132.
This will take some time and
you must be patient for you will
be counting on the Center having
the address, and if they have and
send the letter, that the buddy
remembers and is a writer. It
does get results but takes time.
Time is an important factor in
searching for a buddy. Number
one; time is needed for the search
Two; time has gone by for almost
35 years. Three; in another 35
years we will all be crowding the
century mark in our lives. Four;
anytime we spend now in locating
our buddies of the 12th Armored
Division is of great value in that
he and we will never be alone
for the remainder of our lives.
Above all do not give up if the
letter or card comes back stamp-
ed "Addressee unknown", try
again and again, use the above
sources, all of them. It takes
time, patience and the ability to
stick to the job to find our bud-
dies. It also takes some money
for stamps and cards and maybe
a beat up old typewriter, but just
ask yourself "How much is a bud-
dy worth?" and you will find
that the few dollars that are spent
are nothing compared to the re-
wards that come in knowing that
you have found another Hellcat.
It is a good feeling when you find
him after searching for him and
you finally get that first letter
saying "Hi Buddy, How did you
find me. It sure is good to hear
from a Hellcat after all these
years!" It is a great reward be-
cause you know that unless you
Oct. 1979 H E L L C A
had done the research and the
hunting, he would have still been
wondering what had happend to
his buddies. It is much more re-
warding when you see that Hell-
cat at a Reunion meeting all his
buddies again, then you know that
every minute and every penny
you put into the search was worth
it. Another side reward is meet-
ing the wonderful Hellkittens that
the Hellcats bring to the Reunion
with them (or is it the other
way?), it definitely points out the
fact that Hellcats were not only
winners on the battlefield but also
on the homefront, (Hellkittens are
also the best letter writers in the
world).
In searching for our lost bud-,
dies there are also moments of
saddness, such as when you re-
ceive an answer to your letter or
card and find that you were too
late in your efforts, that your
buddy had passed on to his etern-
al rest just a short time before
you could locate him. This should
be an added incentative for all of
us to locate those lost buddies
before it is too late. Like it or
not we do not know when that
day will come for any of us and
if we can find a buddy before,
it will make all our days happy
ones. Keep this thought in mind,
for the price of a pack of smokes
- you could find a buddy, for the
price of a gallon of gas - maybe
two buddies, how many phone
calls in a six pack?, think about
it! How do these pleasures add
up to the pleasure of locating and
meeting a buddy again?
Do not sit back and let some-
one else do the hunting and have
all the fun, get into the game and
enjoy it like they do, try it - you
will like it!!!!
Dr. Catroneo, our battalion doc-
him as our family doctor today.
A wonderful devoted person who
always went far beyond his call
of duty. His performances were
outstanding. Where is he now? I
believe that he was from the New
Two predominate individuals
who are not on the membership
roster. Let's get with it - look
them up - and let us know. These
two fine persons are just a start
- each of you must have a desire
to regain contact with old army
friends - why don't we all pitch
in and extend our efforts so that
we can re-establish our old com-
Send in names and last known
addresses of our old fellow sold-
iers - perhaps we can make this
a Hellcat venture, which obvious-
SEATTLE 80
Fellow Hellcat and Hellkittens
this is one of possibly eight re-
ports on what I will call SEAT-
TLE 80 for our Reunion in Seat-
tle next year in 1980. I want to
bring you as much as possible
about the Seattle area and what
you can see and do, so with the
help of Inez, we will have you all
prepared.
Many of you who were in Louis-
ville saw a lot of the photos I will
have with each report, which Inez
did a good job getting together so
you could see some views. We will
be taking a few more as we do
want you to be well informed.
The two photos this time (1)
Space Needle - which is beautiful
to see and go up in to get a good
view of Seattle. The fee is nomin-
al. (2) The Musical Fountain - It
play different tunes and the water
is regulated for each note, the
water goes higher and lower out
of different pipes. In the back
ground is the small Sky Ride
which is part of the amusement
park, that has all types of rides
and of course you can try your
luck at winning one of those giant
Pandas, etc., as well as visiting
the Food Circus which has all
types of meals from Chinese, to
Italian, to German food and many
more and of course they have my
favorite the Belgian Waffle very
thick and big, which has Straw-
berries and Whipped Cream on
top and very delicious. Enough of
that.
Getting to the Space Needle
and the Food Circus is done very
easily from the Washington Plaza
Hotel where we will be Head-
quartered. All you have to do is
walk a little distance to the Mono-
rail and the fee at this time is 25^
and for Senior Citizens it is 10i>.
This like the Space Needle was a
left over from the Worlds Fair
and I am happy it was as it is
sure an added attraction. People
who live close to the Seattle Cent-
er which is the area the Space
Needle is in take the Monorail to
town, rather than the bus, as it
is better for them and cheaper.
One other thing I want to bring
to you in this first article is the
price of the rooms, in the Wash-
ington Plaza and these are con-
firmed rates, not cheap but I
know we can live with them. You
will have to have a few less good-
ies and your wife will have to
Oct. 1979 HELLCAT NEWS
had a good tme. Would have liked
to have seen the Patton Museum.
Business here would not let me
leave at that time. Am anxious
to hear where the next reunion
will be held and certainly hope
we can attend that one.
We plan to spend part of the
winter in Arizona at Mesa again.
Name should be in the phone
book if anyone is out that way.
Both of our daughters will be liv-
ing there also. Alice is now 24
and will be working with Juvenille
Delinquents at Prehab of Mesa.
Ellen, 22 is planning on opening
her own ladies ready to wear in
Scottsdale on Fifth Ave. If every-
thing works out for her she will
open this fall and it will be known
as Mine 11a, so anyone out that
way stop by.
Jim Sideris - My wife Desie
and I visited Egypt this summer.
The word for all visitors especial-
ly Americans, was Welcome.
Every Egyptian knew the word
Welcome in English and some of
the more articulate even express-
ed satisfaction that America had
helped bring peace between Egypt
and Israel.
That's it for now. Don't forget,
it takes communication from you
to keep this column alive. Also,
the ones who haven't paid their
dues do so now before you forget.
Also I would like to have all the
members phone nos' and area
code.
stay out of all the stores where
the goodies are for the grand-
children back home. The rates
will be $45. single and $55. double
soooooo let us all start stuffing
the piggy bank for this gala oc-
casion and I know you can do it,
by putting a wee bit away each
week, or by making an extra de-
posit in the savings account where
it can gain a bit of interest by
next June. Remember the dates
of the Reunion are: JULY 3rd,
4th & 5th. A bad time, but we
will all make it I am sure. The
Cut-Off Date for room reserva-
tion is JUNE 12th. Kindly mark
that date down on your calender.
Jack Miller our Reunion Chair-
man has twisted a lot of arms for
us, so let us help him by not hav-
ing to have him fit you in after
the deadline O.K.????
See you next month in the HCN
with more good words and photos.
Any questions be free to drop
us a line, so we can answer it in
the next monthly report O.K.??
As the dues roll in for the fiscal
year 1979-80, a few of the mem-
bers are sending along a note,
which is always welcome, and
provides other members with
some information regarding the
personal events in the lives of
their buddies.
Bill Bolin (C): Enclosed please
find my 1980 dues for member-
ship in the 12th Arm'd. Div. As-
sociation. My wife and I had
planned on attending the reunion,
but on July 5th the wife had
surgery, and is slowly recover-
ing. I am sure all who attended
had a good old time, and I sin-
cerely hope that C-43rd was well
represented. Received a letter
from Elsie Brassard, advising me
that John (Jack) passed away
June 13th of a massive heart at-
tack in Eugene, Oregon where
they have made their home for
many years. I am sure all of C
Co. will be saddened to hear of
Jack's death. Funeral services
were at St. Paul's Catholic Chur-
ch, Eugene, Ore. Saturday, June
16, 1979. His ashes were buried
in the family plot, Merrill, Wise.
Jack and I were discharged to-
gether, Jack will be sadly missed.
Denny (A): I am enclosing Law-
rence's dues and a booster. He
would prefer you send it to some-
one in Co. A, 43rd Bn. if you have
an address of someone. Lawrence
will have 40 years of service with
the Baltimore & Ohio RR Co.
this November. He will be eligible
for retirement October 1st, but
has decided to work another year
until he is 61, for better hospital-
ization benefits. Lawrence keeps
busy with our garden, mowing
grass and doing mechanical and
body work on our automobiles.
We were sorry to hear from Ken-
neth Selters, A-43, the first part
of December, that his wife Irene
passed away around Thanksgiving
time. We had a nice visit with
them about six years ago in Iowa.
We both enjoy reading the Hellcat
News very much. Keep up the
good work.
Juanita and Clarence W. Sell
(A): (written to George Moss,
Exec, Sec'y. and forwarded on to
me.) I will not send this to my
unit representative, due to the
fact I am late and want to get
this in. Would really like to have
come to Louisville, Ky. for the
reunion this summer, but things
just would not permit. Have a
trip planned to Omaha, Nebr. We
have a daughter out there. Her
husband is a staff sgt. at the AFB
in the security there. They also
have a new son, we have never
seen. I can now boast of five
grand children. Two girls and
three boys. The oldest daughter
lives here close by, one girl, two
boys. I do not know if there are
any Hellcats out in the Omaha
area (no recsrd of membership
in Omaha, but do have two in the
state of Nebraska, Ralph Minnick
in Riverton, Nebr. 68972, and
Elmer Morfeld, Osmod, Nebr.
68765.) I don't have much to re-
port. Have not heard from anyone
this summer, and have not been
on any trips. I have been retired
now for four years, and enjoy
every minute of it. Keep quite
busy with church work and senior
citizens. Our retirement club from
the Kellyspring Tire Co. is going
to Clayton, N.Y. on a tour of the
1000 islands. The day after we
leave for Nebraska. We are fly-
ing. Don't trust this gas business.
Maybe I can have some news the
next time. Send our regards to
everyone. (Regarding the lack of
news, wish every member would
send in as much as you have,
in your letter.)
Tony Lamarra (Hq) sent dues
and booster, with a note stating
"Sorry I'm late in sending my
dues. No reason for not sending
it sooner. You know, tomorrow,
************•••••*-
and tomorrow never comes, as
the good old saying goes." (Good
to have you aboard, Tony.)
Ray Billings (Sv): (Excerpts
from his personal letter to Fern
and me): The doctor was having
some trouble getting the refrac-
tion right, so it took a couple of
weeks. I didn't realize how blind
I was getting until I was without
it (my eye). I am glad all of you
folks had such a nice reunion, and
certainly wished I had been able
to be with the gang. Of course,
doctors' appointments at the VA
come ahead of everything else.
My health is good, so I can be
thankful for that. I was so sorry
about Clyde's (Behrendt) wife
passing away. Hope he didn't take
it too hard. I was glad to have
met her at your place. I am still
going to the VA on volunteer
work each Tuesday and Thurs-
day. Really enjoy doing this type
of service. I'm now the VAVS
Deputy Representative for the
VFW and do quite a bit of service
work for them. I'm not able to do
anything physical, so this is right
down my alley. (Good to hear
from you Ray. Will be sending a
personal reply shortly.)
Received the following note
from a B-43 member, who will
not be identified "Just a note to
save you from sending a renewal
notice and having extra expense.
I have decided not to renew my
membership. I was with the
twelfth Armored Division almost
two years, in B-43, and during my
short membership, I haven't read
about one guy I ever heard of. I
might as well be subscribed to
the foreign legion." Quite a con-
trast to the notes we usually re-
ceive from members, describing
their enjoyment at receiving the
Hellcat News. However, this
member has a point. In checking
through the correspondence re-
ceived from B-43rd members so
f?r this year, only three took time
to write. Help this column by sub-
mitting some B Company news,
fellows.
My old friend Warren Maue (A-
17), former unit rep, for the 17th,
sent us a new member, Henry
Davidson (Sv-43) of Wilmington,
Delaware. Thanks Warren. Hope
Henry will avail himself the op-
portunity to meet his old buddies
at a chapter reunion, or a national
convention, so he can enjoy the
friendly feeling that has been
realized by those of us, who have
taken an active part in the func-
tions of this great organization.
Also received personal notes
from our friends, Mark and Ann
Ault (Sv) of Salem, Illinois, and
Charles McManigal (C-43) of
PICNIC HITS
It was mentioned elsewhere
about the various Unit having
their family type get togethers
around the country for various
functions. Central Illinois tries to
have a golf tourney the Sunday
following Mother's Day. 1980 will
find us on the links at Galesburg,
Illinois. I think about, talk about,
and purpose that the golfers have
a pre-reunion tournament at the
Reunions. I am sure the golfers
would appreciate this type of re-
laxation, AND, I'm sure that
many of the Hellkittens wolild ap-
preciate the day for shopping for
family and friends. Christmas is
in the air wherever Hellcats con-
gregate.
Central Illinois Hellcats and
Hellkittens got together for a
summer picnic at Nichols Park in
Jacksonville, Illinois. It is to be
an annual affair with the hopes
of promotion from the ranks, the
members and the Hellcat News.
Two years have brough excellent
picnic weather, besides, we al-
ways get a shelter just in case
someone forgets the foul weather
gear, The Gals, our favorites, fix
a pot luck type luncheon, Klein-
schmidt brings the Beardstown
watermelon, and the Hellcats and
Hellkittens bring the smile?.
We had a terrific group this
summer, five weeks after the Re-
union. The Division was pretty
Woster, Ohio. The visitations back
and forth between the Aults and
ourselves are so frequent, that
they are no longer news. We're
thankful that they are now only
a couple hours' driving time from
well covered. Irvin Allen, A-43
stopped by to 'case' the set up
but could not stay for the refresh-
ments. It was good for him to
stop by and I hope he can recruit
a few more from his area to en-
joy the chatter. I am speaking
of Jersey, Greene, Calhoun, Mad-
ison and Montgomery Counties.
That is to the south as we have
several members close in to the
north of Morgan County.
The 'chow hounds' that bellied
up to the picnic table were Hank
Backs, Hq-56, John Brown, A-44,
Harland DeGrott, B-493, Joe Far-
ran, Sv-494, Larry Kleinschmidt,
C-43, Melvin Knack, Sv-43, Glen
LaFond, A-44, George Moss, A-
714, Ed Peacock, Sv-44, and Dean
Strubbe, C-495. All of the good
cooks were there also, the wives
of everyone, PLUS, a terrific in-
vader from the Garden State of
New Jersey, Dottie Clarke, Hq-
56. It has to be the smiles that
come from these that force the
decision of 'come back next year'.
I come from an extremely large
family but this has to take the
cake. All of the Hellcats know all
of the Hellcats. The Good Lord
wouldn't want it any other way.
Set up your own, in Framing-
ham, in New Kensington, in
Owensboro, in Land O' Lakes, in
Bradford, wherever a few Hell-
cats can join in the hand shake
of our happiness. It's Great To
Be A Hellcat!!!!
us, which enables us to get to-
gether quite often. Charles Mc-
Manigal has been in semi-retire-
old place of business. However,

he will shortly be taking full re-
you wont have to battle those big
snows out there in Ohio. Just sit
inside and watch the unfortunate
individuals who still have to work
for a living.
To date, we have a total of 95
members who have sent in their
mmbership dues for fiscal year
1979-80 (this excludes booster pay-
ments.) A good record at this
early date. However, there are
still many members that have
not responded. To these, I plead
for cooperation in promptly re-
newing their memberships. Re-
member, the $5.00 represents only
$1.00 in dues. The balance is re-
quired to cover the expenses of
publishing the monthly edition of
The Hellcat News. Thus, very
minimal dues.
Its rather early to talk about
the next reunion in Seattle, Wash-
interested in attending, I have
some registration forms for the
Washington Plaza Hotel, where
the convention will be held. If
you are interested, just send me
a line. More on this later.
The next Midwest Chapter re-
union will be held in Chicago,
Illinois. More information will be
forthcoming regarding this event,
and other chapter reunions to be
held in other areas of the United
States. The Southern Chapter was
approved at our last reunion, so
they will be meeting in that area
of the country. These chapter re-
unions afford the opportunity to
meet old friends, without travel-
ing great distances - and, they
provide a good time for all.
So long for now. Don't forget
to drop me a line, so we can keep
this column nice and newsy.
Speaking for the 43rd members,
Past President "Thoughts"
It has been three months since
the reunion and I have stepped
down as your president. I must
say I do not feel anything has
changed. I am still busy writing
letters and making phone calls.
First vice president, Kenneth
Bradstreet has asked me to be
on a team of Hellcats to help find
some of our lost commrades and
I have accepted his offer. I guess
by now all of you know how I
feel about this association. I will
always be available to help where
I can. As someone once said, It's
better to have loved and lost then
never to have loved at all". The
same goes for this association,
it's better to help to improve and
make it grow, than to complain
and do nothing about it. I do
hope the few things that I have
done while I was active as your
president, and as a member, has
teen a benefit to this association.
We are now in the midst of sett-
ing UD our Eastern ChaDter Reun-
ion. Once again, it will be at the
Sheraton in the Poconos in Str-
oudsburg. The dates are as foll-
ows: April 25, 26, and the 27th,
1980 We will have the agenda in
the future Hellcat News along
with reservation blanks. There
will be a definite cut off date.
We will have all the rooms need-
ed providing you mail in your
reservation. Those who do not
mail in a commitment may not
re able to get accommodations.
11 you thing you are going all you
have to do is mail in the reserva-
not make it, you can cancel the
reservation without any loss, but
You know how we run our East-
your eyes on the Hellcat News for
the reservation blanks. We will do
a follow-up on those who have
received honors at the Kentucky
award was given. I do hope you
enjoy reading how these mem-
were so deserving of recognition.
I was proud to be on the commit-
HELLCAT MEDAL OF HONOR
LEN DOOLEY - Hq-92
MR. HELLCAT 1968
We would be remiss if we did
not award the first Hellcat Medal
of Honor to the Man we know as
Mr. Hellcat of all time, Len
Dooley. During the early years of
the association, Len was instru-
mental in holding us together to
be ready for our great member-
ship boom of the past few years.
Len was one of those members
who said the association must
survive "Come hell or high wat-
er". Thank God he did so until
we learned to swim by ourselves.
Len's term of association pre-
sident was during the years 1956,
1957, 1958 when we were struggl-
ing to get on our feet. His associa-
tion career since then has includ-
ed being appointed a Kentucky
Colonel at the Louisville reunion
in 1964 and being one of the orig-
inal signers for formation of the
Midwest Chapter at the 19th re-
union in Cleveland in 1965.
He has served as our by-laws
committee review chairman 1969,
Director 1968-69 and on the silver
anniversary reunion committee at
Milwaukee in 1971. He also ser-
ved as Director at Large in 1972
and Chairman of the San Fran-
cisco reunion in 1973.
Len's appearance at every re-
union has given him the enviable
record of being 1 of 2 persons
holding 100'' attendance at our
reunions.
We have just touched lightly on
the association contributions of
Len Dooley. To him ... for all
his time and effort ... we say
thanks-a-million.
HELLCAT MEDAL OF HONOR
LARRY MINTZ
MR. HELLCAT 1969
Larry Mintz took hold of the
reigns of our association' Execut-
ive Secretary position and dog-
gedly performed the duties for
nine years. He finally was re-
leased from these duties in the
1965 - 1966 membership year.
However, he did not leave the
association work responsibilties.
When he had the duties of the
executive secretary position well
filled by a capable Harold Hend-
ricks, the association elected
Larry to be their fifteenth pre-
sident.
Larry, after guiding the destin-
ies of our association these many
years, reluctantly passed on the
reigns of responsibity to those he
had been tutoring for carrying on
THE MEDAL OF
HONOR GROVE
The Medal of Honor Grove, at
Valley Forge, Penn., is having
difficulty paying for maintenance
and upkeep because of rising in-
flation and labor costs.
It is situated on a 52-acre wood-
ed tract near the national head-
quarters of the Freedom Founda-
American Serviceman who have
received this Nation's highest
The Grove is divided into State
Memorial areas, each containing
an obelisk, brick plaza, Flag
Staff, State Seal, and a plaque
containing the names of the Med-
al of Honor recipients.
The General Knox Building
houses both records of the Medal
of Honor recipients and visual
displays documenting the Medal's
History. Also in the grove is a
statue of George Washington as
he knelt to pray during the terr-
ible winter at Valley Forge, sev-
The other side of this here coin,
river, ocean, bed. It would be
impossible for me to make up
a paper without the complete
support of our members in their
relationship with their Unit Reps.
It is your contact with them, the
Reps, that can keep me supplied
with a variable of context. The
Battery get togethers such as the
495th had on Labor Day weekend
can supply plenty of copy for
most of that Unit. The same ap-
plies to the B Company of the
2?rd who sponsored a COMPANY
shindig at South Bend, Ind. over
the same Labor Day Weekend. I
Will bet one years dues that
toth Units lined up the same kind
of a deal in the same manner for
next year, same weekend in '80.
Maue has his 12th FAMILY picnic
on the Sunday following Mother's
Day every spring. Every section
of our country should have the
pleasure of our company, city,
town, village and farm. There
is room for all.
Toll-free telephone service is
available to Veterans Administra-
Some 24 million callers will re-
HELLCAT NEWS
GEORGE G. MOSS — EDITOR
1017 W. WASHINGTON ST. SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS 62702
The Hellcat News is published monthly by the 12th Armored Division
Association — All communications should be sent to the Executive
Secretary and checks made payable to the Association.
A RETURNEE!
Just a short explanation as to
how we discovered the 12th Arm-
ored Association. A couple from
our Moose Lodge were going to
Hawaii and my wife asked them
to bring us some pineapple if they
had room for it on the return trip.
Two weeks later we received a
call to come over and pick up our
fruit. While she was at their home
they talked about other vacations
they had been on and Mrs. Blozis
(Peter 152nd Sig.) mentioned
that they had gone to Europe and
visited the places her husband
had seen during the war. My wife
asked how did they know about a
trip like that with the same men
her husband had served with?
Mrs. Blozis showed my wife a
copy of the Hellcat News. She
could hardly believer her eyes
and asked for a copy to bring
home to me, to say that I was
astounded would be the understatement
of the year/how could
this organization be meeting for
33 years and I had never heard
one word about it?
Called another man I know
Charles Waller (Hq. Co. 66th) so
you now have two "new members".
"Chick" and I joined the
12th at Camp Campbell October
of '42.
I sure would like to hear from
the old Co. B. 17th boys.
