$92,000 raised by Ochsner employees and community donations for Haitian Relief Fund and seven trips to Haiti for medical relief support Ochsner Treats Haitian Earthquake Victims Ochsner’s diversified team made a difference on the international stage. In January 2010, after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti, we organized the Ochsner Haitian Relief Fund. Ochsner employees and the community raised about $92,000 to help victims. Teams of physicians and staff members traveled to Haiti seven times in 2010 to give medical care to victims. We also delivered an ambulance donated by Acadian Ambulance to transport patients. A leader in these medical missions was native Haitian Dr. Yvens Laborde, Ochsner West Bank Regional Medical Director, who made several medical relief trips to his homeland at several stages of the disaster. Dr. Laborde wrote this appreciation from Haiti late last year, “The cholera epidemic is taking its toll, and our interventions with life-saving care and medications are making a difference. The people here are appreciative of Ochsner’s direct intervention on their behalf.” Ochsner Innovates to Make Local Communities Healthier Ochsner continues to create healthier communities close to home. A prime example is Ochsner’s support, since 2008, of the 59-bed St. Charles Parish Hospital in Luling. As the only parish hospital, St. Charles faces challenges in recruiting physicians and accessing other resources. Ochsner helps by sharing resources that are abundant in our system – physician recruitment and administrative expertise. Ochsner has provided a primary care physician, full-time neurologist, and part-time cardiology and oncology physicians, and helped plan the renovation of the Emergency Department and the building of a new ER. Last year, Ochsner physicians at St. Charles saw patients in 4,378 clinic visits and more than 1,500 hospital visits. Ochsner has supported the St. Thomas Community Health Center, an inner city, nonprofit safety-net clinic known for quality care, since it opened in 1987. Ochsner donates the services of internal medicine residents, an interventional cardiologist and a cardiology fellow. In fact, each Ochsner first-year internal medicine resident – 18 per year – does a one-month rotation at St. Thomas. Our cardiology fellow does heart screenings and evaluations during a half day each week. We also donate cardiac catheterization lab time for about ten patients monthly. Ochsner Combats Childhood Obesity Ochsner’s Healthy School Initiatives are improving the health of students, families and teachers – now and in the future. Ochsner has
Ochsner Health System 2010 Annual Report 15 partnered for several years with Jefferson Parish Schools in a school-based health center, located at Bonnabel High School and cares for students at no charge. As medical partner, Ochsner provides a full-time nurse practitioner and part-time medical director. In 2010, Ochsner opened another health center at Ehret High School in Marrero. Last year, the two clinics had 4,500 patient visits – physicals, preventive care, screening and care for chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and hypertensions – and identified many students with risk factors. Louisiana’s children have high rates of obesity and risks of developing type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Ochsner’s “Change the Kids, Change the Future” program, also in Jefferson Parish schools, aims to reverse these statistics. In 2010, the initiative received a $100,000 grant from the Humana Foundation. Ochsner assessed students in all 80 Jefferson Parish middle schools – more than 15,700 youths. Data from our six pilot schools showed 55 percent of these students had an unhealthy body-mass index. Only 16 percent passed the aerobic capacity test. As a result, the schools are changing the physical education curriculum. Ochsner will continue to track the students and implement initiatives to improve their health. A partnership between Ochsner and the New Orleans Hornets basketball team energized healthy, active lifestyles among local elementary and middle school students. We presented Fit for Life Field Days at area schools and sponsored an Ochsner Bee Fit web page featuring videos with fitness trainers, healthy kid-friendly recipes and tips for healthy living. “The Field Days are a great way for Ochsner and the Hornets to collaborate in changing the health of the next generation,” says Dr. Patrick Quinlan, Chief Executive Officer, Ochsner Health System. “This program parallels our goals of utilizing our resources and expertise to help integrate healthy initiatives into a child’s life.” A New Orleans home “goes pink” for breast cancer awareness. Ochsner and the Saints Go Pink to Fight Breast Cancer Last October, Ochsner and the New Orleans Saints teamed up to tackle the disease that strikes one in eight American women in their lifetime. The Ochsner Goes Pink campaign increased breast cancer awareness and promoted early detection. It also raised support for the new Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center, a new focal point for cancer research, care and education. The public response was heartening – donations of half a million dollars for improved cancer care in just 31 days. Ochsner Goes Pink got even more visibility through the National Football League’s program to add pink elements to uniforms of Saints players and coaches. Saints executive Rita Benson LeBlanc appeared in a public service announcement and, during the October 31st Saints game, Ochsner introduced breast cancer survivors to personalize the effort. Ochsner Goes Pink spread the word through a web page where visitors could share their stories, get exclusive Ochsner Goes Pink items and learn about cancer detection and treatment services at Ochsner’s Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center and The Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center.
