A N N U A L
R E P O R T

In 20 0, Ochsner cared for more than
336,000 patients, who came from 26 countries, with
2,388 Ochsner and community physicians, 2,500
dedicated employees, from 50 facilities including
8 hospitals, and more than 38 health centers, together
as integrated health system, working towards Vision.
OUR VISION: Ochsner will be a global medical and
academic leader who will save and change lives. We will
shape the future of healthcare through our integrated
Health System, fueled by the passion and
strength of our diversified team of physicians
and employees.
Vision

Ochsner Health System 2010 Annual Report 1
A MESSAGE FROM CEO, PATRICK J. QUINLAN, M.D.
As a global leader, we have been inspired to stretch across continents, countries and boundaries
with innovative healthcare services. In 2010, Ochsner cared for more than 336,000 patients from 26
countries, while serving as a healthcare leader in our local communities. We also are building our
prominence as an industry thought leader on the forefront of healthcare and technology.
At the same time, Ochsner focuses intensely on the patients whose lives we touch and heal. Our
success can only be measured by the care we give to each man, woman and child we serve. I believe
Ochsner’s capability to lead globally while still delivering personalized care is essential to our future success.
This year’s Annual Report focuses on Ochsner’s Vision. In 2010, our Vision led us to new levels of achievement. U.S. News
and World Report named Ochsner as one of America’s best hospitals in seven different medical specialties. These rankings
and other honors confirm that our Vision is sound. We are proud of what we have achieved and always look for ways to
improve. We welcome the opportunity for change rather than resist it.
There are many extraordinary stories in these pages. They show that Ochsner is fulfilling its potential. Someone once
said that our purpose in life is to discover our gift, and our meaning in life is to give it away. At Ochsner, our time is now.
Together, we will change the future of our communities, our state and even the world.
Patrick J. Quinlan, M.D.
Chief Executive Officer
A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT AND COO, WARNER L. THOMAS
Ochsner’s Vision is fueled by the passion and strength of our physicians and employees. In 2010, we
energized nearly 2,400 Ochsner and community physicians and 12,500 employees. This extraordinary
team represents a powerful force for health and healing in our communities and around the world. We
are becoming a global leader and our influence increases each day, in every community we serve.
All of the achievements detailed in this Annual Report spring from the talents, skills and dedication of
our clinic physicians, community physicians and employees. Ochsner’s team achieved unprecedented
success during the past year, not only in individual and departmental achievements but in the essential task of working
together as an integrated system.
The challenges of delivering healthcare have never been more acute. That’s why Ochsner is growing stronger and
developing more of our resources, especially as an industry thought leader and community leader for positive change.
Others seek to emulate our fully integrated system model as a way to achieve greater efficiency, cost-effectiveness, quality
and diversity.
This past year, Ochsner moved to a stronger position on the forefront of healthcare. As we expand, it is vitally important for
us to follow our Vision, a living blueprint of our values. With this Vision to lead us, Ochsner Health System will continue to
excel in quality care and ensure a healthier future for all the patients we serve.
Innovative Medical Training
Ochsner’s newest international initiative is
our groundbreaking partnership with a leading
Australian medical school, The University of
Queensland (UQ). In May 2010, dignitaries from
two continents gathered at Ochsner’s main
campus to dedicate the UQ School of Medicine,
Ochsner Clinical School. This partnership offers
a unique and unprecedented international
training for American medical students.
As the only program of its kind in the world
to bring top medical education to students
in two countries, the UQ School of Medicine,
Ochsner Clinical School will boost its American
enrollment to 80 in 2011, and in a few years, will
be graduating 120 new American physicians
in Louisiana annually. U.S. medical students
complete two years of pre-clinical training in
Brisbane, Australia, and two years of clinical
training at Ochsner. Australian medical students
may spend 2-6 months of their third and fourth
years at Ochsner, training in medical specialties
and core rotations.
National Leader Energizes Region
at Ochsner Forum
Ochsner’s significant partnership with GE
Healthcare brings two national leaders together
to promote visionary ideas about turning
adversity into recovery. In 2010, GE Chief
Executive Officer Jeff Immelt and Ochsner
executives inspired 900 business leaders at
an Ochsner-sponsored forum on the New
Orleans-area recovery. Immelt offered
strategies for our region’s success, even in a
challenging economy.
The forum is part of Ochsner’s efforts to
rebound from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by
following specific recovery strategies – recruiting
world-class physicians, starting beneficial new
patient services and pursuing innovation with
partners like GE.
GE is helping Ochsner with leadership
development and implementation of new
innovative technologies. The overall goal of
our partnership is to help Ochsner deliver
healthcare more safely and efficiently. This
has already led to dramatic improvements in
patient care. A proven GE technology called
AgileTrac is enhancing our infrastructure and
providing more value-added time to staff. This
system allows Ochsner to leverage real-time
location technology and redesign workflow and
comprehensive services, freeing our staff to
concentrate more on patients.
Top-Quality Rankings
In July, U.S. News and World Report named
Ochsner Medical Center as one of America’s
Best Hospitals, citing our exceptional delivery of
care across seven categories. Among the 4,852
facilities analyzed, only three percent earned a
ranking in any of the 16 specialties. Our ranking
in seven confirms that our Vision is leading us
to clinical excellence and national prominence.
Ochsner was also distinguished as one of the
Top 15 Major Teaching Hospitals from the 100
Top Hospitals ® by Thomson Reuters National
Benchmark Study. This annual review measures
overall performance of nearly 3,000 hospitals
in 10 key areas, ranging from patient
mortality to patient satisfaction. According to
researchers, if all Medicare inpatients received
the same level of care as those treated at the
Who Will Save and Change Lives
Each day at Ochsner’s hospitals and health centers, lives are saved and tomorrow’s cures are being discovered.
Ochsner’s medical staff remain at the forefront in all medical specialties and subspecialties, constantly delivering
new therapies, procedures and technological advances. Our groundbreaking medical research is the foundation of
our world-class care to patients, who can depend on Ochsner to provide the latest advances now and in
years to come.
The Gayle and Tom Benson
Cancer Center Opens
In June, Ochsner unveiled the first phase of The Gayle and
Tom Benson Cancer Center at Ochsner Medical Center.
Soon after, the Center began serving patients, who receive
advanced chemotherapy in 40 infusion stations that serve
more than 2,000 patients annually. The Center takes a
multidisciplinary approach as it delivers top-notch clinical
care in newly renovated surroundings designed for patient
comfort. The owner of the New Orleans Saints Tom Benson
and his wife Gayle donated $5 million to help fund the
Center, which provides a unique combination of patient
care, research and education and sets us apart in cancer
care. At the ceremony, Tom Benson proclaimed, “We’re the
best hospital in the city, and we’re going to tell the world
about it.”
Construction is underway on phase two of the Center,
which will house comprehensive cancer treatment
services and clinical trials. The Center will offer expanded
medical oncology clinics as well as urologic, gynecologic,
and surgical oncology consultation services and
multidisciplinary teams. Ochsner’s extensive cancer
research programs include trials for all major cancer types
from the National Cancer Institute, Cooperative Group and
pharmaceutical and investigator-initiated sources.
At the Cancer Center opening, Dr. Adam Riker, Medical
Director of Cancer Services, summed up the advantages of
Ochsner’s care. “You don’t get just one physician when you
2,200
come to this Cancer Center. You get a team of
specialty-trained physicians who will take care of you.”
Multi-Organ Transplant Institute:
Better Outcomes, New Programs
Help Ochsner Become a
National Leader
Ochsner’s prestigious Multi-Organ Transplant
Institute is now among the country’s leading
transplant centers. In 2010, we performed more
transplants than ever before and were recognized
for outstanding quality and high survival rates.
Improved patient outcomes and shorter
waiting times placed Ochsner’s kidney and liver
transplantation programs among the best in the
U.S. HealthGrades recognized Ochsner with its
Kidney Transplant Excellence Award in November,
2010. Ochsner was among 11 hospitals which
showed a statistically, significantly higher three-year
survival rate. Our liver transplantation program is
now ranked the sixth top program in the country
and has these survival rates: 99.08 percent for one
month (compared to 94.92 percent nationally),
98.96 percent for one year (88.64 nationally) and
85.06 percent (74.10 nationally) for three years.
Ochsner also opened a new Leukemia, Blood and
Marrow Transplant Program in November 2010,
bringing together highly experienced transplant
specialists, a new dedicated inpatient unit and
outpatient infusion suite, state-of-the-art stem cell
processing lab and clinical trials.
This much-needed service benefits our region’s
cancer patients who have been traveling out of
state for marrow transplantation. Ochsner’s aim is
to develop the service into an international-caliber
program. “In putting together our program, we
relied on what has been perfected in our field,” says
Director Dr. Arthur Molina, III. “We designed our
facilities, lab and nurses’ training to deliver the best
for our patients. We have all the elements in place
to deliver state-of-the-art care.”
More than
2, 00
patients got a second chance at life
Treating Rare Cancer at
Ochsner Kenner
More than 2,100 patients with an uncommon
type of cancer got a second chance at life last
year thanks to the Neuroendocrine Tumor
Program at Ochsner Medical Center – Kenner,
one of only five centers in the U.S.
Because neuroendocrine tumors, which
produce hormones and affect the cells of the
nervous and endocrine systems, are rare,
patients often have difficulty finding an accurate
diagnosis and effective treatment. But without
aggressive surgery, this cancer can be deadly.
Ochsner’s program, with its experienced
multidisciplinary approach, provides expert
care, including surgery, and is working to raise
funds for a “home” to house patients and their
families who come from far away for treatment.
Some patients are already close to home.
Ochsner employee David Connick is one of
many neuroendocrine cancer patients given
life-enhancing care by our program.
The major focus is advanced hematopoietic stem
cell transplantation through autologous, allogeneic
and peripheral stem cell procedures. Leukemia,
lymphoma and myeloma patients who need
marrow transplantation now have life-enhancing
treatment close to home.
We Will Shape the Future of Healthcare
Shaping the future of healthcare is a challenging endeavor during these times of change.
Our healthcare system’s strong foundation prepares us to embrace the future, relying on
world-class medical practitioners, innovation, research and excellence in patient care.
Center for Health Research:
Finding Ways To Improve
Patient Outcomes
Unique in Louisiana, Ochsner’s Center for Health
Research pursues innovative studies to assess the
effectiveness of what we do in medicine with the
ultimate goal of improving patient health. Founded
in 2006, the Center made great progress last year,
especially in its major study to help seniors with
hypertension. The Center’s goal is to supply tools
for providers to use in their daily practices to
enhance patient management and outcomes.
Eighth Medical Center Joins
Ochsner System
Expanding patient care in the populous
St. Tammany – Mississippi Gulf Coast region,
Ochsner bought Northshore Regional Medical
Center, a 165-bed acute care, full-service
hospital, in April 2010. This conveniently
located Slidell hospital is now Ochsner Medical
Center – North Shore. The hospital brings
100 physicians, 700-plus employees, and the
region’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
(PICU) to the Ochsner system.
“Ochsner Medical Center – North Shore gives
local residents an unparalleled continuity of
primary and specialty care for their entire family.
We plan to become more involved in improving
the health of North Shore communities through
more accessible, expanded and specialized
care,” says Warner Thomas.
The Cohort Study of Medication Adherence among
Older Adults (CoSMO), funded by National
Institutes of Health, researches ways to help patients
follow prescribed medication schedules, a major
factor in achieving better clinical outcomes.
“We’ve validated a self-report medication adherence
tool in research settings. The next step is rolling it
out in clinical practice,” explains Dr. M.A. “Tonette”
Krousel-Wood, Center Director. The Center’s team of
researchers has published multiple papers in peerreviewed
journals on CoSMO, which was the topic at
the Center’s annual Lecture Series in April, 2010.
Another 2010 highlight was the Center’s agreement
with Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical
Medicine to work together in certain areas to
facilitate improved research and health advances.
Increasing efficiency and effectiveness and
improving outcomes are common goals in today’s
healthcare world. Through the Center, Ochsner
is energizing solid productive work to reach these
goals. As Ochsner works to shape the future of
healthcare, the Center for Health Research will help
lead the way.

Ochsner Health System 2010 Annual Report 9
Ochsner First to Study Oil Spill’s
Mental Health Effects
When BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded
off Louisiana’s coast in April 2010, it sparked a
major disaster that still is affecting the entire
Gulf Coast. Ochsner took action to measure,
publicize and address the oil spill’s impact on
residents’ mental health.
Ochsner conducted the first regional survey
of mental health after the spill. The results
showed deep, widespread psychological stress.
In July, 30 minutes after the study findings were
released, they circulated throughout the world
and were picked up by 625 media outlets. Since
then, BP has committed millions of dollars to
mental health services to help coastal residents.
The study results were significant: three of every
10 persons surveyed suffered from “probable
serious” or “probable mild-moderate” mental
illness, based on a psychological distress scale.
Among the four Gulf states, Louisiana had the
highest rate – 18 percent – of serious mental
illness. This is double the rate of serious mental
illness among south Louisiana residents in
2007, two years after Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita.
such as water births are available.
With all-private, spacious rooms, the Center is
equipped with an eight-bed, Level III Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU) spanned by a
“starlight” ceiling, suites with built-in labor
tubs, labor-delivery-recovery rooms, postrecovery
rooms and operating suites. The
Center was designed to serve growing families
in the Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish area.

Through Our Integrated Health System
Ochsner’s integrated health system has led to new levels of achievement because it unites many
medical practitioners and vast resources into one team, with one Vision.
“We are a great organization today, and are nationally renowned for a lot of the things we’re doing.
Our integrated model of physicians and hospitals working together is the model that systems around
the country are trying to duplicate,” says Joseph E. Bisordi, M.D., Executive Vice President and Chief
Medical Officer, Ochsner Health System. Essential to this system are sophisticated technologies in
medicine, communications and systems management. Ochsner earned its leadership role in healthcare
by developing trend-setting ideas and energizing innovations. Our leaders are shaping healthcare with
influential ideas and actions.
Procurement Agency (LOPA), transplant recipients, registered donors
and volunteers, took a leading role in spreading the word about the
importance of organ donation. They inspired 3,000 persons to become
registered organ donors through a disco-themed video called Save
Nine. The title refers to the number of lives every organ donor can
potentially save. More than 500,000 people viewed the video.
“Organ donors are true heroes who have saved and enhanced lives
through organ, eye and tissue donation. To reach and educate a
children. Baptist Community Ministries found
NFP works best when linked to a hospital, and
Ochsner recognized it as a worthwhile way to
enhance health in under-served areas.
The program provides a nurse to underserved
women experiencing their first pregnancies.
The nurse works with the women throughout
pregnancy and the first two years of the baby’s
life, promoting health and teaching them how to
nurture their child’s development. NFP is proven
to help women have healthier pregnancies
and babies. It also helps prepare their children
for school and learning. Entergy, the state
Department of Health and Hospitals, and United
Way help fund the program.

$92,000
raised by Ochsner employees and community donations for
Haitian Relief Fund and seven trips to Haiti for medical relief support
Ochsner Treats Haitian
Earthquake Victims
Ochsner’s diversified team made a difference
on the international stage. In January 2010,
after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti,
we organized the Ochsner Haitian Relief
Fund. Ochsner employees and the community
raised about $92,000 to help victims. Teams of
physicians and staff members traveled to Haiti
seven times in 2010 to give medical care to
victims. We also delivered an ambulance donated
by Acadian Ambulance to transport patients.
A leader in these medical missions was native
Haitian Dr. Yvens Laborde, Ochsner West
Bank Regional Medical Director, who made
several medical relief trips to his homeland
at several stages of the disaster. Dr. Laborde
wrote this appreciation from Haiti late last
year, “The cholera epidemic is taking its toll,
and our interventions with life-saving care
and medications are making a difference. The
people here are appreciative of Ochsner’s direct
intervention on their behalf.”
Ochsner Innovates to Make
Local Communities Healthier
Ochsner continues to create healthier communities
close to home. A prime example is Ochsner’s
support, since 2008, of the 59-bed St. Charles
Parish Hospital in Luling. As the only parish
hospital, St. Charles faces challenges in recruiting
physicians and accessing other resources.
Ochsner helps by sharing resources that are
abundant in our system – physician recruitment
and administrative expertise. Ochsner has provided
a primary care physician, full-time neurologist,
and part-time cardiology and oncology physicians,
and helped plan the renovation of the Emergency
Department and the building of a new ER. Last
year, Ochsner physicians at St. Charles saw patients
in 4,378 clinic visits and more than 1,500
hospital visits.
Ochsner has supported the St. Thomas Community
Health Center, an inner city, nonprofit safety-net
clinic known for quality care, since it opened in
1987. Ochsner donates the services of internal
medicine residents, an interventional cardiologist
and a cardiology fellow. In fact, each Ochsner
first-year internal medicine resident – 18 per
year – does a one-month rotation at St. Thomas.
Our cardiology fellow does heart screenings and
evaluations during a half day each week. We also
donate cardiac catheterization lab time for about
ten patients monthly.
Dr. Yvens Laborde delivers healthcare to Haitian earthquake victims.
Ochsner Combats
Childhood Obesity
Ochsner’s Healthy School Initiatives are
improving the health of students, families and
teachers – now and in the future. Ochsner has

Ochsner Health System 2010 Annual Report 15
partnered for several years with Jefferson Parish
Schools in a school-based health center, located
at Bonnabel High School and cares for students
at no charge. As medical partner, Ochsner
provides a full-time nurse practitioner and
part-time medical director. In 2010, Ochsner
opened another health center at Ehret High
School in Marrero. Last year, the two clinics had
4,500 patient visits – physicals, preventive care,
screening and care for chronic illnesses such
as asthma, diabetes, and hypertensions – and
identified many students with risk factors.
Louisiana’s children have high rates of obesity
and risks of developing type 2 diabetes and
hypertension. Ochsner’s “Change the Kids,
Change the Future” program, also in Jefferson
Parish schools, aims to reverse these statistics.
In 2010, the initiative received a $100,000
grant from the Humana Foundation. Ochsner
assessed students in all 80 Jefferson Parish
middle schools – more than 15,700 youths.
Data from our six pilot schools showed 55
percent of these students had an unhealthy
body-mass index. Only 16 percent passed the
aerobic capacity test. As a result, the schools
are changing the physical education curriculum.
Ochsner will continue to track the students and
implement initiatives to improve their health.
A partnership between Ochsner and the New
Orleans Hornets basketball team energized
healthy, active lifestyles among local elementary
and middle school students. We presented
Fit for Life Field Days at area schools and
sponsored an Ochsner Bee Fit web page
featuring videos with fitness trainers, healthy
kid-friendly recipes and tips for healthy living.
“The Field Days are a great way for Ochsner
and the Hornets to collaborate in changing the
health of the next generation,” says Dr. Patrick
Quinlan, Chief Executive Officer, Ochsner
Health System. “This program parallels our
goals of utilizing our resources and expertise to
help integrate healthy initiatives into a
child’s life.”
A New Orleans home “goes pink” for breast cancer awareness.
Ochsner and the Saints Go Pink
to Fight Breast Cancer
Last October, Ochsner and the New Orleans
Saints teamed up to tackle the disease that
strikes one in eight American women in their
lifetime. The Ochsner Goes Pink campaign
increased breast cancer awareness and
promoted early detection. It also raised support
for the new Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer
Center, a new focal point for cancer research,
care and education. The public response was
heartening – donations of half a million dollars
for improved cancer care in just 31 days.
Ochsner Goes Pink got even more visibility
through the National Football League’s program
to add pink elements to uniforms of Saints
players and coaches. Saints executive Rita
Benson LeBlanc appeared in a public service
announcement and, during the October 31st
Saints game, Ochsner introduced breast cancer
survivors to personalize the effort.
Ochsner Goes Pink spread the word through
a web page where visitors could share their
stories, get exclusive Ochsner Goes Pink items
and learn about cancer detection and treatment
services at Ochsner’s Lieselotte Tansey Breast
Center and The Gayle and Tom Benson
Cancer Center.

PHILANTHROPY & COMMUNITY
Ochsner donors are valued partners in advancing health
and healing. In 2010, Ochsner was privileged to receive
major gifts and generous support. Our essential donors
include friends, foundations, businesses, employees
and volunteers.
Gayle and Tom Benson’s generous $5 million gift for
the Cancer Center named in their honor is already at
work helping us treat more patients. The Gayle and Tom
Benson Cancer Center’s beautiful glass Tansey Tower
was made possible through a $1 million donation from
Liesolotte Tansey, Ochsner’s breast center benefactor.
Thanks to a generous matching grant from the
RosaMary Foundation, gifts from Ochsner staff and
board members to the Bring Baptist Back campaign
make an even bigger difference. To date, over $1.5
million has been invested in Ochsner Baptist Medical
Center through the generosity of this longtime
community partner and the enthusiastic response of
Ochsner staff and board members to this matching
grant opportunity.
Working with Baptist Community Ministries and
United Way, Ochsner has raised over $185,000 to serve
first-time, low-income mothers and their babies through
the Nurse Family Partnership program at Ochsner
Medical Center – West Bank Campus.
Ochsner garnered over a million dollars in support from
a full calendar of 2010 Special Events: Ochsner Run,
Summertime Blues, Party 4 Peds, Ochsner Goes Pink
Gala honoring Gayle and Tom Benson, Fore Ochsner
Golf Tournament, Style Night for a Cause and Tree of
Life. To expand donor outreach, Ochsner re-instituted
the full-time Director of Planned Gifts post.
Runners participate in 25th Annual Ochsner Fun Run and Race.
Ochsner was built on a foundation of charitable values.
As a non-profit academic, multi-specialty, healthcare
delivery system, we seek charitable partners. Through
the Ochsner Clinic Foundation, we welcome taxdeductible
philanthropic gifts from those who share our
Vision of a healthier future.
