Welcome to the <strong>Wigram</strong> <strong>House</strong> Halls of Residence. The Halls are<br />

situated in a lively and fashionable area with a vibrant nightlife and<br />

is close to the major <strong>London</strong> attractions of the City and the West<br />

End. It is within walking distance of the main tourist sights,<br />

including the Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace, the <strong>House</strong>s of<br />

Parliament and Big Ben and the <strong>London</strong> Eye.<br />

We wish you a pleasant stay with us and hope that this information<br />

booklet will help you find your way in <strong>London</strong> and increase your<br />

comfort whilst at the residence.<br />

GUEST INFORMATION<br />

Checking-in<br />

Rooms are available from 14.00hrs on<br />

the afternoon of your arrival. Guests are<br />

asked to check-in at the Reception desk,<br />

situated on the ground floor. At<br />

Reception, guests will be issued with a<br />

room key and a key to the front door.<br />

Guests who arrive early may be able to<br />

leave their baggage with reception. The<br />

University, however, cannot be<br />

responsible for loss or damage.<br />

Checking-out<br />

Guests are asked to vacate their rooms<br />

by 10.00hrs on the morning of departure<br />

and keys must be returned to reception.<br />

Failure to depart by this time or to return<br />

the keys will result in an additional<br />

charge to your final account.<br />

Reception<br />

It is open between 0800 and 2200hrs<br />

and is staffed at night by security<br />

personnel. All enquiries, except in the<br />

case of emergencies, should be directed<br />

to the receptionist on duty during the<br />

day.<br />

Keys<br />

Please ensure that room keys are<br />

returned to <strong>Wigram</strong> <strong>House</strong> Reception on<br />

your departure, otherwise a charge of<br />

£30.00 will be made to your final<br />

account. All lost keys will be charged<br />

for.<br />

Luggage<br />

Left luggage facilities are available at all<br />

main line train stations; otherwise ask<br />

reception if they can assist.<br />

Urgent incoming messages can be taken by<br />

the reception on +44 (0) 207 828 5019.<br />

Staff will kindly place your message on a<br />

notice board or room mailbox. We regret<br />

that we are unable to locate guests for<br />

incoming calls.<br />

Visitors<br />

You may invite guests to the hall, but they<br />

must not cause a disturbance to other<br />

residents. We ask that all guests vacate the<br />

building by 2300hrs<br />

Noise<br />

The level of noise should be kept to a<br />

minimum at all times, but especially after<br />

2300hrs. The University reserves the right<br />

to remove any guest found creating noise<br />

or disturbance. No refunds will be made.<br />

Security<br />

All efforts are made to ensure that the<br />

premises are secure. For your own safety,<br />

keep your room locked at all times when<br />

not occupied. The University of<br />

Westminster cannot accept responsibility<br />

for loss or damage to personal belongings<br />

and you should take your own insurance<br />

cover.<br />

Fire<br />

If the fire alarms sound, please leave the<br />

building immediately; do not stop to<br />

collect personal belongings. Leave by<br />

using the nearest fire exit stairwell, do not<br />

use the lifts, then go to your designated<br />

assembly point, under the covered archway<br />

on Victoria Street<br />

assistance.<br />

Guests with Disabilities<br />

If you have difficulty evacuating the<br />

building or you need special assistance due<br />

to disability, please let the reception know<br />

Laundry<br />

There is a coin operated launderette on<br />

the ground floor. Detergent and other<br />

laundry products can be purchased from<br />

local shops. Ironing boards and irons are<br />

also available in the Laundry room.<br />

Kitchens<br />

Cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery<br />

are provided in every kitchen for your<br />

use. Please wash up and return items to<br />

the kitchens when you have finished<br />

using them.<br />

Bathrooms<br />

Bathrooms and toilets are for shared use.<br />

Please leave them as you would like to<br />

find them yourself.<br />

Cleaning<br />

Rooms are serviced every day and bed<br />

linen changed once a week. Please help to<br />

keep the residence tidy and clean after<br />

cooking. Kindly co-operate with the<br />

cleaning staff.<br />

Health & Safety<br />

VOLTAGE: 240Volts, 50Hz AC sockets<br />

are fitted in all rooms. American and 3<br />

pin round plugs cannot be used without<br />

an adapter. A limited number of adapters<br />

are available at reception.<br />

Equipment<br />

The use of large electrical appliances such<br />

as electric heaters, fridges, microwave<br />

ovens etc, other than those provided by<br />

the residence, is not permitted. The use of<br />

candles is also prohibited.<br />

Smoking<br />

Smoking is only permitted in the common<br />

rooms within the hall.<br />

Other Terms & Conditions<br />

Please refer to details given in “Holiday<br />

Contract”, a copy of which you should<br />

have in your possession. If misplaced,<br />

spare copies are kept at reception.<br />

LOCAL INFORMATION<br />

<strong>Wigram</strong> <strong>House</strong> is well located to visit the major attractions on offer in this diverse and<br />

interesting city. Buckingham Palace, the official home for the Royal Family, is just<br />

round the corner. Why not take a stroll in the beautiful St James’s park, before visiting<br />

Westminster Abbey, the <strong>House</strong>s of Parliament and Big Ben. The <strong>London</strong> Eye, with<br />

spectacular views of <strong>London</strong>, is just minutes from the hall.<br />

TRANSPORTATION<br />

The <strong>London</strong> Underground<br />

<strong>London</strong>’s underground is one of the most comprehensive subway systems in the world. It<br />

covers the whole city, is easy to use and is usually the quickest way to travel. Travelcards<br />

are the most economical way of getting around the city. They can also be used on buses<br />

and some trains and will allow you to travel an unlimited number of times within your<br />

chosen zones daily, weekly or monthly.<br />

The closest Underground station to <strong>Wigram</strong> <strong>House</strong> is Victoria Station, on the Victoria,<br />

Circle and District Lines. Victoria also has British Mainline train services that serve<br />

destinations outside of <strong>London</strong>, and is home to the Gatwick Express.<br />

<strong>London</strong> Buses<br />

Red buses are one of the sites of the capital and can be used to travel over most parts of<br />

<strong>London</strong>. It is a slower alternative to the tube, but has more regular stops and more<br />

interesting views. From Victoria Street you can either get on the 11, 24 or 211.<br />

The Trains<br />

Train networks provide a fast service out of <strong>London</strong>, passing through the outskirts of<br />

express trains take you out of town to <strong>London</strong>’s major airports. Luton and City airports can<br />

be reached by express coach 757 and by shuttle bus respectively.<br />
