development with the potential to be detrimental to its visual appeal
should be considered carefully.
Conclusion
Given the aforementioned importance of Scottish tourism to the
economy, and of Scotland’s landscape in attracting visitors to Scotland,
VisitScotland would strongly recommend any potential detrimental
impact of the proposed development on tourism - whether visually,
environmentally and economically - be identified and considered in full.
This includes when taking decisions over turbine height and number.
VisitScotland would also urge consideration of the specific concerns
raised above relating to the impact any perceived proliferation of
developments may have on the local tourism industry, and therefore
the local economy.
23. SCOTTISH RIGHTS OF WAY & ACCESS (SCOTWAYS)
The National Catalogue of Rights of Way shows that right of way
SKC10/SCD110 is affected by the site boundary indicated on the
applicant’s Figure 4.2. A map is enclosed with right of way
SKC10/SCD110 highlighted in orange. As there is no definitive record
of rights of way in Scotland, there may be other routes that meet the
criteria to be rights of way but have not been recorded as they have not
yet come to our notice.
It may be of interest to note that our popular and recently republished
book Scottish Hill Tracks describes a route on a similar line to the
recorded right of way. I have marked an approximation of the
alternative route in pink on the enclosed map.
Additionally, the site boundary appears to lie in part along a route which
follows the west side of Loch Doon. This route is promoted by the
Heritage Paths project for its historic interest and has been highlighted
in green on the enclosed map; it is also described in our Scottish Hill
Tracks book.
