on how to start a fall garden from 8:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the El Franco Lee
at the Hidden Lakes apartment complex in the
900 block of Henderson.
Jimenez, 33, had reportedly been harassing
Davies’ sister following their recent break-up.
When the two women left Jimenez’s apartment,
he followed them outside and shot each of
them multiple times as they were entering their
vehicles.
A good Samaritan attempted to come to
Thomas’ aid, but Jimenez forced him at gunpoint
to move her car so he could exit the complex.
Contrary to other media reports, Jimenez ran
over Thomas as he fled the scene, rather than Davies.
Witnesses were able to identify Jimenez’s vehicle
to Webster police, and a short chase ensued.
Police cornered Jimenez in a strip center parking
lot at Egret Bay and NASA Road 1, where they
found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot
wound to the head.
Davies was later pronounced dead.
At press time, Thomas remained in critical but
stable condition. According to family members,
she had undergone four surgeries, but would require
several more.
Webster police say Jimenez and Davies’ unidentified
sister had broken up roughly three
weeks earlier following a two-and-a-half year
relationship.
Approximately one week before the shootings,
the Houston Police Department visited the
ex-girlfriend’s place of employment because
Jimenez had reportedly sent her more than 100
threatening text messages.
On Thursday, Sept. 30, Webster police responded
to an incident at Jimenez’s apartment
where the two had gotten into a physical altercation,
but the ex-girlfriend refused to press charges
on him.
Houston police again visited the ex-girlfriend’s
work on the day of the shootings after
Jimenez had showed up and caused a disturbance,
prompting Davies and Thomas to later
intervene.
One of the first 50 babies to be born at Memorial
Hermann Southeast Hospital, Thomas is
a lifelong South Belt resident, having attended
Frazier Elementary, Thompson Intermediate and
Dobie High School.
Teen falls to death
Pearland resident Devin Mattlage died Sunday,
Oct. 3, while trying to save his friends who
had driven off the road into a construction pit off
the Beltway 8 service road near Pearland Parkway.
Mattlage, 18, and a 17-year-old girl were following
two friends who were in a white Ford
F150 driving west along the beltway at roughly
1 a.m. when the driver, 18-year-old James Benjamin
Aulds, lost control of his vehicle and hit a
Barmore named Pasadena ISD
Distinguished Citizen for 2010
Barmore has been
selected as the Pasadena
Independent
School District’s
for 2010.
Barmore, vice
many contributions
to education in the
district.
curb on Pearland Parkway.
According to police, Aulds then crashed his
truck into a traffic pole, drove over a series of
metal guard plates at the construction site and
plunged into a 25-foot-deep pit.
After the crash, Mattlage and his passenger
immediately stopped to offer help. But while trying
to save his friends, Mattlage lost his footing
and fell into the pit. He was later pronounced
dead at the scene.
Contrary to other media reports that Mattlage
died from a broken neck, the Harris County Institute
of Forensic Sciences determined his death
was caused by drowning.
Aulds was taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas
Medical Center with a punctured lung, while the
passenger of the truck was taken to Ben Taub
General Hospital with minor injuries.
Police determined that Aulds was drinking at
the time of the accident, and on Monday, Oct. 4,
charged him with intoxication assault.
Thomas benefit
slated for Oct. 9
A barbecue fundraiser for Angelica Del Valle
Thomas will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, in the
parking lot of the Goodwill (formerly Kroger) at
10998 Fuqua at Sabo Road.
Thomas, 23, was involved in a shooting Saturday,
Oct. 2, and requires extensive medical treatment.
See related story this page.
Barbecue plates, including a drink, will be
available for a minimum donation of $8 each.
Larger donations, however, will be accepted.
For more information or to donate funds, call
Kenny Fernandez at 281-412-0622.
Barmore will be honored with a bronze plaque
during a ceremony on Nov. 9 at the Pasadena ISD
Administration Building.
“I’m a product of Pasadena ISD schools, and
my teachers and coaches were tremendous role
models to me,” Barmore said. “I just want to give
other children the same opportunities I had. I feel
very strongly about that.”
Barmore graduated from Pasadena High
School in 1973 after attending Williams Elementary
and Queens Intermediate.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1977 from
the University of Texas at Austin and returned to
Pasadena to work for the family-owned insurance
agency.
Since returning to Pasadena more than three
decades ago, Barmore has been a prolific and
generous sponsor and supporter of district activities,
including a career day event for students at
his alma mater, Pasadena High.
Barmore is a Pasadena ISD Education Foundation
board member and the foundation’s president-elect
for 2011.
Barmore said his work with the Education
Foundation has “opened my eyes to the needs
we have in our schools, and I really admire the
sacrifices our teachers make.”
His generous donations of time and money
to the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation and
to the Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament
have earned Barmore frequent expressions of
praise and appreciation from district officials.
“Receiving this award is the highlight of my
career,” Barmore said. “But I don’t do anything
for recognition. The greatest reward is seeing our
students succeed.”
Past winners of the Distinguished Citizen
award are: Faye Schimek, 1995; Kathyrn Whitfill,
1996; Kathleen Morris, 1997; John Phelps,
A benefit for Daisy Hill will be held Saturday,
Nov. 6, at The Gardens, 12001 Beamer, from 6 to
11 p.m.
A 30-year South Belt resident and longtime
volunteer youth coach, Hill suffers from a rare
stage-four orphan cancer called paraganglioma,
for which there is no cure.
In 2008, Hill appeared on Mystery Diagnosis
on the Discovery Health channel. The 60-minute
program, titled The Woman with the Giant Lump,
chronicled Hill’s battle to remove a massive tumor
from her neck. Although benign, the tumor
caused Hill, 59, severe pain and problems with
her balance. Doctors said it also posed a high risk
for stroke.
Hill’s medical troubles began in 1990 when
she attempted to have her paraganglioma resected
at an area hospital, and doctors mistakenly removed
her parotid gland, causing her to contract
Frey’s Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder
that damages the facial nerve.
On subsequent trips to the hospital, doctors
assured a concerned Hill that all traces of the tumor
were gone.
Over the next 15 years, however, Hill noticed
that she was developing a growth on the side of
her neck. This got progressively worse, expanding
at an alarming rate and generating extreme
pain.
Weary of doctors and without medical insurance,
Hill put off visiting a physician as long as
she could. By October 2006, however, the pain
had become unbearable.
Convinced she now had cancer, Hill reluctantly
went in for a checkup. She was shocked to
hear from her new doctors that her 1990 operation
had been botched.
Now far too late for legal recourse, Hill was
fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of Dr.
Eugene Alford, who sympathized with her situation
and volunteered his services pro bono. Joining
Alford in his charitable work on Hill, were
colleagues Michael Reardon, Richard Kluznuk
and Brian Butler (whom Hill collectively refers
to as “the dream team”).
Together, the doctors worked tirelessly on her
operations and recovery.
In all, Hill underwent three surgeries.
The removed tumor, measuring 22 centimeters
by 19 centimeters, was the largest the doctors
had ever seen. The surgical process was filmed
to be used as a tool for future medical students.
Following her surgery, Hill endured five weeks
of head and neck radiation therapy.
Unfortunately, Hill’s paraganglioma has now
metastized into her lungs, pelvis, chest and
throat, and her condition requires multiple costly
treatments.
Hill also recently lost her only child, Ronnie
Hill, who himself suffered from a rare disorder
known as Holt-Oram Syndrome.
The fundraiser will feature food, a raffle, a live
auction and door prizes. Barbecue plates will be
$10 each.
An account has also been established at the
Readers’ Opinions
Legler: The results
are in . . . .
Yes, that is right, the results of this
non-scientific survey contained in the
Summer 2010 newsletter that you sent
out have been tabulated. And yes, I did
say the newsletter that you sent out
because your tax dollars paid for the
newsletter to help keep you informed and
it is an additional tool in helping me perform
my duties in Austin, which is representing
you.
The newsletter was sent to every
household that voted in the 2008 general
election, which is roughly 40,000 voters.
Before the percentages are revealed, I
would like to thank every person who
returned a completed survey to my office.
One of the hallmarks of citizenship is
participation and participate you did. It is
truly a lot easier to represent you in
Austin when I have several good guide
posts to rely on when the time comes to
decide how to vote on certain issues.
I would also like to thank everyone
who responded with their own thoughts
on the blank lines under additional comments.
These additional comments have
been very good indicators on issues that
are on the minds of people in House
District 144 concerning topics that were
not directly questioned in the survey.
On that subject, the main topic of concern,
according to the additional comments,
is border security. Most of the
comments noted in some form or other
concern with the rising violence occurring
on the other side of the Rio Grande
and possible impacts here in Texas. I
could not agree more. Securing the border
against those who wish to harm
Texas and America has to be one of the
top priorities of not only Texas but also of
the Federal Government. In fact (to give
you a preview of the results) almost 80%
of those who returned the survey are in
favor of using state funds to increase
border security. (Though when you think
about it, it is sad that Texas must consider
using our own tax dollars at a time
when money is tight to perform a Federal
obligation.)
The second topic of concern, again
according to the additional comments, is
education. The majority of comments
concerned ensuring money Texas sends
to schools is used directly in the classrooms.
As you are well aware, ensuring
the children of House District 144 has
been one of my top priorities since I was
first elected. The upcoming session in
January is going to be a very tough one,
with Texas facing a budget deficit approximated
between $18-20 billion dollars
and over half of the budget is dedicated
to funding education. I agree that majority
of money that Texas sends to school
districts should be used to directly benefit
students in the classroom.
Now, with that said, I am pleased to
publish the results of the poll. And please,
as always, if there is any topic of concern
or issue you would like to have special
attention paid to, contact either my district
office or my capitol office. Remember,
we are here to work for you.
Open house a hit
Principal Toni Lopez (left) and peer facilitator
Holly Bailey welcome almost 400
parents to Thompson’s open house.
On Sept. 16, Thompson Intermediate
held its annual open house and,
according to peer facilitator Emily
R. Cruz, it was a hit. Nearly 400
parents, grandparents, relatives,
etc., lined the entrance doors to see
the newly repainted Recognized
campus. Principal Toni Lopez took
the stage and gave a warm and
inviting message for all the families
explaining the love and commitment
they have for the children.
Hallways were filled with many
teachers welcoming parents into
their classrooms and giving advice
on studying skills while introducing
them to the curriculum. At the
end of the night, the crowd filled
the book fair in the library and
talked about the next Thompson
Athletic Booster Club meeting and
the PTO program. It was a night
that reminded people how important
it is to have a close-knit relationship
between community and
school.
National Merit
Finalists named
The Clear Creek Independent
School District recently
announced that 41 students
at four high schools had been
selected semifinalists in the
2011 National Merit Scholarship
Program.
These academically talented
high school seniors
have an opportunity to continue
in the competition for
8,400 National Merit Scholarships,
worth more than $36
million, that will be offered
next spring.
To be considered for a
Merit Scholarship® award,
semifinalists must fulfill several
requirements to advance
to the finalist level of the competition.
About 90 percent of
the semifinalists are expected
to attain finalist standing, and
approximately half of the finalists
will win a National
Merit Scholarship, earning
the Merit Scholar® title.
Lauren Conde, placed eighth
in the nation in hospitality
management; Wesley Fly
placed third in sales presentation;
and Tania Sederdahl,
who recently transferred to
University of Texas in Arlington,
was elected PBL vice
president for the Mountain
To become a finalist, a
semifinalist must have an
outstanding academic record
throughout high school, be
endorsed and recommended
by the high school principal
and earn SAT scores that
confirm the student’s earlier
performance on the qualifying
test (PSAT).
The semifinalist and a
high school official must submit
a detailed scholarship application,
which includes the
student’s essay and information
about the semifinalist’s
participation and leadership
in school and community activities.
In Texas, juniors had
to score at least 215 on last
fall’s qualifying test.
National Merit Scholarship
recipients from Clear
Brook High School are Dylan
S. Domel-White, Kelly Hogg,
Graham A. Montgomery and
Nicholas D. Scheifler.
Plains Region.
“This was an extraordinary
event for all of us,” said
Alvarado. “Our SJC professors
were really supportive
in preparing us. We learned
how to face real-world experiences
and how to handle
the day-to-day challenges in
a business setting.”
Alvarado said participants
were required to complete
online tests and a role-play
scenario in their areas, which
included public speaking, impromptu
speaking, business
ethics, economics, business
law and computer applications.
Phi Beta Lambda is a
student business association
that offers members the opportunity
to learn, travel and
grow as business professionals.
More than 1,600 students
compete each year alongside
SJC students, said Elizabeth
McKinley, PBL advisor and
business professor at SJC
South.
“We took nine students to
compete and came home with
three national awards and a
national vice president,” said
McKinley. “They represented
San Jacinto College very well
and demonstrated how hard
work really does pay off.”
Wuenschel Citizen of the Year
The 2010 Clear Creek
Independent School District
Citizen of the Year is Dr.
Peter Wuenschel, executive
director of Communities in
Schools Bay Area. As executive
director, Wuenschel
leads a team whose mission
is to help young people stay
in school, successfully learn,
and prepare for life.
By living up to that mission
and keeping potential
CCISD dropouts in school,
the organization has had a big
hand in the district’s earning
the exemplary rating. CCISD
Superintendent Dr. Greg
his leadership he has added a
new level of accountability to
the CIS services provided to
students and families ensuring
that kids stay in school.”
Wuenschel said he was
honored by the award but remained
humble by accepting
it on behalf of the employees
of Communities in Schools
Bay Area. That sums up
Wuenschel, a man driven to
be of service to others.
“I have always recognized
the importance of education
and have instilled the desire
for continuing education
in my four grown children.
However, I credit the employees
of CIS – Bay Area with
instilling in me a passion to
see that every child graduates
from high school,” Wuenschel
said.
“The employees of CIS
– Bay Area work intensively
with students who are at risk
of dropping out of school and
help them engage in school
activities and see the benefit
of graduating. These students
come from all walks of life
but for many reasons may be
struggling academically because
they don’t feel a part of
their school. The CIS - Bay
Area coordinators let these students
know that there is a caring
adult who can give them
hope,” Wuenschel added.
“Dr. Wuenschel has guided
CIS to become a more collaborative
partner with Clear
Creek ISD,” Smith said. “We
look forward to working with
Dr. Wuenschel as our Citizen
of the Year and CIS in the future
to insure that every child
stays in school and benefits
from a high quality education
in CCISD.”
In 2005, the CCISD board
of trustees established the
Citizen of the Year award,
which is managed through
the Clear Creek Education
Foundation. It has been
awarded previously to the
late Bob Forde; Sandy Johnson,
Barrios Technology
Dr. Peter Wuenschel
CEO; Charlie Pond, CCISD
community volunteer; and
Lucien Junkin, CCISD Robotics
program co-founder.
Wuenschel will build on their
legacy and would like to “encourage
everyone who can to
be involved in volunteering to
help our young people gain a
quality education. They are
our future work force and our
future leaders.”
“My role in CIS – Bay
Area is to engage businesses
and individuals in helping atrisk
students know that the
community supports them,”
Wuenschel said. “I have been
blessed with a wonderful
wife who supports my career
choice, and I have been
blessed with a wonderful job
that allows me to engage the
community in helping kids
stay in school. All my volunteer
efforts are to that end.”
San Jacinto College Chancellor
Dr. Brenda Hellyer and
SJC South campus President
Dr. Maureen Murphy have
been selected to serve this
year on commissions with
the American Association of
Hellyer will serve on the
Commission on Academic,
Student and Community Development,
and Murphy will
“The fact that both Dr.
for communications with the
AACC. “Selection is an honor,
because it’s a very competitive
process.”
Headquartered in the National
Center for Higher Education
in Washington, D.C.,
the AACC is the primary advocacy
organization for community
colleges at the national
with directors of state offices
to inform and affect state
policy. The association represents
almost 1,200 two-year,
associate degree-granting institutions,
and more than 11
million students.
Kent said the six AACC
commissions allow community
college administrators
to advise the board of directors.
The Commission on Academic,
Student and Community
Development addresses
such issues as community
college accreditation, dual
games, the Longhorns are
coming off a bye week. With
the exception of one or two
players, everyone has had a
chance to heal up a bit and
recharge the batteries.
The final five weeks
of the regular season will
come one at a time, but the
goal will be the same.
Dobie will meet Pasadena
Oct. 8 at Newcomb
Field to kick off the District
22-5A schedule for both
teams.
Dry cleaned suits, freshly
pressed shirts, recently
JFD tennis still unbeaten in 22-5A race
Dobie’s action plan en
route to reaching the Region
III varsity team tennis tournament
is working out just
fine for now, but now the
team may have its toughest
challenge ahead.
After beating the South
Houston Trojans 18-1 Oct.
5 at Dobie, the Longhorns
stayed unbeaten at 4-0 in
District 22-5A action. Now
comes the capper.
The Longhorns are set to
take on Deer Park, also 4-0,
on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 3:30
p.m. Both teams are in great
position for the postseason
22-5A tournament, but there
is still so much at stake.
The Dobie-Deer Park
winner will not only gain a
bye all the way to the 22-5A
tournament championship
round but will also earn a
Region III tournament seeding.
“This is what we have
been playing and planning
for,” Dobie head coach
Manuel Moreno Jr. said.
“Beating Deer Park is
not a do-or-die situation in
terms of the postseason, but
it would be a big accomplishment.
I’m just proud
of our kids for getting to
this position and having this
chance. Having said that,
we want to beat Deer Park.”
The Longhorns and Deer
have thus far dominated 22-
5A play.
Each of the Sagemont
Cowboys teams remained
in serious playoff
contention after a
sweep over the Magnolia
Park Sharks Oct. 2
at El Franco Lee Park.
The Cowboys’ senior
division team began the
day with a rousing 32-0
victory over the Magnolia
Park Sharks. Along
the way, the winners
got great defensive play
from everyone, including
Shamaud Smith-
Kizzie (making tackle at
right). Smith-Kizzie also
scored a touchdown in
the game as the Cowboys
improved to 6-1 with the
victory. Sagemont’s other
three teams also won
big games in the series,
leaving each well within
the mix for the postseason.
Dobie VB bounces back, CB goes to 5-3
Thanks to a three-match
winning streak, Clear
Brook’s varsity volleyball
bought evening dresses and
mums are beautiful and
all, but all Phillips and the
Longhorns want for homecoming
is a victory.
“I’ve explained to the
players that basically homecoming
is for everybody
else to enjoy,” Phillips said.
“Our job is to go out and
win a football game, and
right now that is all we are
focused on.”
Dobie should enter the
game with plenty of confidence.
The team has a winning
record at 3-2 entering
team has vastly improved
its standing in the District
24-5A ranks after a slow
The Clear Brook varsity
volleyball team, including,
from left, Kendra
Turley, Crystal Young
and Caiti O’Connell,
has jumped back into
the chase for the 24-5A
title with three straight
wins.
play, and a defense that
offered little more than a
handful of question marks
has played exceptionally
well. Phillips is excited
about beginning district action.
“In the game of football,
anything can happen,” Phillips
said. “We have seen
what Pasadena is capable
of doing from an offensive
standpoint, but our defense
has really come on and
played well.
“Coach (Carey) Sink and
the staff have done a great
start, while at Dobie the
Lady Longhorns are holding
steady at 2-2 after a split
of two matches.
CB tied for third place
Sitting at 2-3 after a loss
to Clear Lake in the first half
of district play, the Lady
Wolverines were in need of
a big turnaround.
So far, so good. Clear
Brook has suddenly reeled
off three straight wins to
get to 5-3, which counts for
a third-place tie with Pearland.
The Lady Wolverines
began their run by sweeping
past Pearland and then
closed out the first half of
district play with a marathon
win at Dickinson.
Alicia Dittrich, a fouryear
member of the varsity
team, stepped up at the
right time as she slammed a
match-high 24 kills in a 25-
18, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 20-
18 victory over Dickinson.
The senior middle blocker
came back with 17 more
job of getting players in the
right spots, and the players
have responded with a great
effort. I’m very pleased
with that aspect of our football
team.”
If the Longhorns are
able to effectively slow the
Eagles’ option attack, the
home team should be looking
fairly good.
Although running backs
Andrew Robinson and Davion
Hurst have nursed injuries
over the past couple of
weeks, Demarcus Boyd has
been consistently spectacular.
Quarterback Blake Jackson
has improved steadily
as a combo passing/running
quarterback, and the receivers
have played well above
expectations.
“We spent the bye week
getting back to the fundamentals,”
Phillips said.
“You can work on those
things prior to the season,
but then you have to go out
and play games. In our non-
BAFL playoff hunt: Cowboys sweep Sharks; Rams, Rays split
Texans too much for Dolphins
The Sagemont Cowboys
provided plenty of highlights
as the Bay Area Football
League’s eighth week
played out Oct. 2.
The Cowboys, playing
on their home field at El
Franco Lee Park, swept the
Magnolia Park Sharks.
Elsewhere in the league,
the Ellington Rams split
four games against the Texas
City Stingrays at Texas
City High School.
Southbelt wasn’t as fortunate
playing at Presner
Stadium in Pearland against
the Texans. In the end, the
Texans came away with
four wins in the series.
Cowboys sweep past MPS
Remaining in playoff
contention in all four of the
American Conference divisions,
In the first game of the
to 6-1 after blanking the
The victory allowed the
Cowboys to remain atop the
in high gear and the defense
Ulanis Betts and Ricardo
Estrada scored two touchdowns
apiece, and Shamaud
Smith-Kizzee also scored a
touchdown. James Johnson
ran for a conversion following
one of the Cowboys’
The eighth-grade Light
Thompson Intermediate’s
girls’ volleyball program
gave a great effort but
came up short in each of its
matches against Southmore
Sept. 30.
In the eighth-grade
matches, Thompson coach
Rebecca de la Garza
watched as her teams played
with energy and enthusiasm
the entire way.
The eighth-grade Dark
team slipped to 0-4 but had
several players step up.
Desha Harrison led the
team with 11 solid serves,
and Maris Mejia turned in
The Lady Lions lost the
Thompson had many offensive
leaders in the marathon
match.
Emily Wolfe had nine
diving to keep several balls
Kristin Scholwinski added
13 good serves, and Jessica
Jones had five hits and
Libero Valerie Colunga
was all over the court as she
had eight digs to go with
eight great serves from the
back line, drawing praise
from her coach for her accurate
passing and flawless
play.
“I am really proud of
the progress the girls have
made, and we will keep
working hard to get better
each week,” de la Garza
said.
Lady Bears’ VB wins three matches
a loss to Queens. The loss
Beverly Hills used outstanding
serving to win the
first game 25-18.
Georgette Wandji had
Queens battled back to
deciding third game.
The Lady Bears fought
eventually lost the match.
Ashley Castillo led the
comeback as she had 12
BHI football manhandles SoHo
The Beverly Hills Intermediate
football program
had no trouble handling
the South Houston Indians,
winning four games Sept.
26-27.
Bears 8A 21
South Houston 0
The Beverly Hills eighthgrade
A football team came
alive offensively in the
fourth quarter to put away
the South Houston Indians
21-0.
The Bears’ defense stood
strong and pitched a shutout.
David Eldridge put the
Bears on the scoreboard
with an 8-yard run behind
the blocking of Kesean Coley,
Alan Flores and Quinton
Bolling. Joe Gonzalez
ran in the extra point for a
7-0 lead.
The Beverly Hills offense
then sputtered until
the fourth quarter, while
the defense came up big as
Gonzalez intercepted two
Indian passes to keep them
from scoring.
In the fourth quarter,
Gonzalez found the end
zone from 22 yards out on
a big run. Tyler Alfred and
Matthew McGowan provided
the blocking on the play
for a 14-0 lead.
Late in the game, Gonzalez
outran the Indians’
defense for a 73-yard touchdown.
Kiandre Hicks, Alvin Toliver
and Carlos Gonzalez
had key blocks on the play.
Joe Gonzalez then hooked
up with Robert Andrade on
the extra-point pass to make
the final score 21-0.
Bears 8B 22
South Houston 12
The eighth-grade B Battlin’
Bears Football team remained
undefeated as they
traveled to South Houston
and beat the Indians 22-12.
The Bears’ Chris Washington
immediately impacted
the game with a 40-yard
kickoff return.
Then, on his first carry,
Washington took the ball
35 yards for a touchdown.
Rudulfo Jimenez added
the extra point as the Bears
went up 7-0.
The offense again moved
the ball well on its next
drive with passes from
quarterback Kerry Hubburd
to tight end Austin Ingalls
and receiver Darius Walker.
Walker capped off the
drive with a touchdown.
Mistakes allowed South
Houston to get back in the
ball game, but the Bear defense
held up with outstanding
play by Isaiah Perez,
Fabian Osorio, Deshaun
Jones, and Jarvis Russel.
Late in the action, Washington
sealed the win with a
20-yard touchdown run.
Bears 7A 50
South Houston 0
The Beverly Hills seventh-grade
A football team
overwhelmed the South
Houston Indians 50-0.
Bennie Hamilton started
the scoring on a 71-yard run
behind the blocking of Roy
Molina and Kevin Simms.
Josue Villalta kicked the
2-pointer for an 8-0 lead.
Hamilton then added
to the Bears’ lead as he returned
a punt 38 yards for a
14-0 lead.
In the second quarter,
Isaiah Myers hooked up
with Terrance Lambert for
a touchdown. On the extra
point, Myers found Lambert
all alone for a 21-0 lead.
The Myers and Lambert
connection was at it again
on the Bears’ next possession
for an 8-yard touchdown
pass and a 27-0 lead.
The Bears’ offense was
not through, as Hamilton
found the end zone once
again on a 24-yard run.
The Lions were able to
Ryan Williams began the
scoring in the first quarter
by catching a touchdown
pass of six yards from
Ty Lozano. Alex Sadivar
boomed the 2-point kick
through, and the Lions led
8-0.
In the second quarter,
Deandre Jackson scored a
rushing touchdown from
32 yards out, and Saldivar
again converted the 2-point
kick for a 16-0 edge.
The Patriots were able
to get a receiver open for
a long pass for a score,
but that was the end of any
threat of scoring again.
The Lions’ Geron Hall
went high for a pass completion
and turned it into a
touchdown of 38 yards to
bring the Lions up 22-6 at
the half.
Volleyball teams planning playoff charges
Continued from Page 1B
still includes a bumpy second
half with matchups
against as many as five other
playoff contenders, but
for now Clear Brook has
Continued from Page 1B
district portion of the schedule,
we went against some
very good football teams.
There was no time for fundamentals.”
Phillips believes if the
Longhorns take care of the
little things against Pasadena,
the outcome will be a
good one.
“It’s homecoming and
everyone is going to be a
Thompson football
wins all five games
Continued from Page 3B
Lions needed a big play and
Chas Anderson gave just
that on his 52 yard touchdown
run at the beginning
of the third quarter.
Gage Myers ran in the extra
point for a 7-0 lead. The
Lions defense played tough,
but Bondy managed to score
a touchdown of its own.
After the extra point
kick hit the upright, the
Lions held on for the 7-6
win. Ashton Craven had
the block of the game and
the hit of the game.
Ben Coronado, Robert
Saenz, Socrates Guzman,
Collyn Davis, Austin Morales,
Keyaudre Conaway,
and Ricky Vazquez all
played well in the win.
Thompson 7A 57
Bondy 0
In a brilliant show of
strength and speed, the
seventh-grade A Lions won
their game over Bondy by a
score of 57-0.
The scoring started
quickly for the Lions, with
Kameron Dolford running
in from 12 yards out. This
score was set up by Chandler
Tisby’s great kickoff
return to start the game.
The Lions’ defense struck
next as Tyson Thompson
scored on a 33-yard run
seconds later after a fumble
recovery. Thompson then
kicked the 2-pointer.
Thompson kept the pressure
on as Jaylon Bolden
scored on a 51-yard run
down the sideline, and
Thompson added another
kick.
Dolford recovered a
loose ball on defense, and
Bolden followed with a
short scoring run from 4
yards out. Thompson once
again kicked the 2-pointer.
Tisby got into the end
zone from 51 yards away by
running right up the middle.
Bolden intercepted an errant
Bondy pass and ran it back
55 yards for another score.
Malik Peters scored from
58 yards away with a punt
return, and the first quarter
was finally over with the Lions
leading 50-0.
Jose Leal returned another
interception 56 yards
for the last touchdown, with
Thompson running successfully
for the extra point.
The Lions emptied the
bench in the second half,
with the defense taking
over. Jason Lester, Travorus
Gilbert, Kaelon Woods and
Andrew Harnish provided
plenty of stopping power
for the Lions.
The offense was helped
with play from Tyler Giron,
Adan Solis, Orlando Logan,
Deandre Childs and Miguel
At the moment, Clear
Lake leads the 24-5A race
at 8-0 with six matches to
play for each of the teams.
Clear Creek, which will
JFD homecoming next
little more excited,” Phillips
said.
“I’m sure Pasadena is
fired up because this is the
district opener, and we both
have a chance to start with a
win.
“We need to take care
of the football on offense,
make tackles on defense
and execute the little things.
Those are always the things
that help teams win.”
Lopez.
Lions 7B 41
Bondy 7
In the first zone game
of the season, Thompson’s
seventh-grade B team put
together a team effort to
blast Bondy 41-7.
The Lions didn’t waste
time getting to work as they
scored three touchdowns
in the first half, then three
more in the second half.
Oliver Francisco, Verek
Leonard, Jeremiah Franklin,
A.J. Owens, Reeno Green,
Ty Williams, and Raekwon
Harvey all got into the end
zone for the Lions in the
convincing victory.
Luis Adame had a great
catch on offense, then a
great catch on an interception
on defense. Playing
well on defense were Darius
Hyppolite, Isaiah Brooks,
Nick Alvarez, David Garcia,
Joseph Ramirez, Desmond
Scott, and D’Mychael
Shadowens.
Lions 7C 7
Friendswood 6
The Lions’ seventh-grade
C team drew its record to
an even 1-1-1 with a win
over previously undefeated
Friendswood in a tight 7-6
game.
Thompson ran the ball
all over the Mustangs, outgaining
them 260 yards to
64.
But the Mustangs were
able to capitalize on Lion
mistakes to hold the score
even.
After playing to a 0-0 tie
in the first half, the Lions
mounted a drive behind the
running of Martin Trevino
and Darian Thorn to get the
ball into scoring position in
the third quarter.
Trevino scored, and
Myles Harris ran for the extra
point.
The defense had to hold
the Mustangs in check with
time running out but gave
up a touchdown with less
than two minutes remaining.
The Mustangs went for
the win with a 2-point kick
attempt, but it sailed wide,
and the Lions held on for a
7-6 win.
Playing outstanding defense
for the Lions were
Dimitri Brooks, Daniel
Rincon, Daniel Gonzalez,
Kevin Pham and Ryan
Ehlinger.
The “Hit of the Game”
came from Julio Vitales as
he came up with the hardest
hit on an opposing player.
The Lions’ offensive unit
was helped out with good
play from Dyllon Smith,
Josh Dishong, Jeremiah
Guajardo and Daniel Hernandez.
is next at 7-1. Both Clear
Brook and Pearland are
at 5-3 to occupy each of
the two remaining playoff
seeds.
Among those still looking
to cause a change in the
playoff standings, Dickinson
is 3-5 and Clear Springs
and Brazoswood at 2-6. Alvin
is at the bottom at 0-8.
play. The Lady Longhorns
are 2-2 through four
matches with a match coming
Oct. 8 at first-place Deer
C.J. McElroy had three
short touchdown runs in
the first half as Clear Creek
against Clear Brook on
the way to a 38-23 victory
Oct. 1 at Veteran’s Memorial
Celebrating homecoming,
the Wildcats scored
on their first and last drives
of the first quarter, both
ending in 1-yard McElroy
runs, to take a 14-0 lead.
But the Wolverines,
looking to stay unbeaten
early in the 24-5A race,
would not give in.
Clear Brook quarterback
Matt Heidt got his
team within 14-7 with a
4-yard run with just over
11 minutes to go in the
second quarter, but back
came the Wildcats.
The Lady Longhorns
suffered a tough loss at Sam
Rayburn Oct. 1 after leading
two games to one.
In the end, the Lady Texans
pulled off the win with a
21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19,
15-11 comeback.
Most years, Sam Rayburn’s
victory would have
been considered a major
upset, but with senior hitter
Katherine Finney (18 kills)
leading a roster filled with
first-time varsity performers,
the Lady Longhorns
have had to gain experience
on the fly.
McElroy, found the end
zone again on a 3-yard run
midway through the second
quarter.
Heidt, doing his best to
match McElroy, burst 41
yards for a touchdown in
the see-saw game, but the
Wolverines misfired on the
conversion, and Clear Creek
eventually led 24-13 at halftime.
After a scoreless third
quarter, the Wolverines got
a 23-yard field goal from
Aaron Yelovich on the first
play of the fourth quarter
to get within 24-16, but the
Wildcats kept coming.
McElroy’s fourth rushing
touchdown of the game,
this one a 38-yard bust, put
the Wildcats up 31-16.
Ethan Lierman recovered
a fumble and scrambled nine
yards for a touchdown with
five minutes to play as Clear
Brook got within 31-23, but
Clear Creek was able to
After a close battle all
the way, the Rams’ junior
team fell just a bit short in a
19-13 loss to Texas City.
The loss dropped the
Rams to 4-3 in the division,
but the team is still well in
With Finney getting 20
kills, the Lady Longhorns
squared their record at 2-2
with a 25-20, 25-10, 15-25,
25-19 victory Oct. 5 at Dobie,
but the team’s inability
to close out matches showed
again as South Houston extended
things to a fourth
game.
Deer Park is on the
schedule next, and a 22-5A
rematch with Pasadena Oct.
12 comes thereafter. The
Lady Longhorns could use
a bit of an upset of their own
on the road. It surely would
make the team’s playoff
push a bit easier.
hang on for a huge victory
as both teams moved to 1-1
in the District 24-5A field.
Clear Brook matched
the Wildcats in each statistical
category but one. The
Wolverines gained 345 total
yards to 351 for Clear
Creek. Both teams earned
19 first downs.
But the Wolverines surrendered
the game in the
turnover department, losing
three of four fumbles
while Clear Creek did not
fumble.
Next up for the Wolverines
is a Friday, Oct. 8,
matchup against defending
District 24-5A champion
Mark Milton quickly put
the Rams on the scoreboard
as he dashed 45 yards for
a score in the first quarter.
Zion Walker ran for the extra
point. Later in the quarter,
Devin Childs scored the
first of his two touchdowns
on an 18-yard gallop as the
Rams led 13-6 after one
quarter.
The Rams used the passing
game to lengthen their
lead in the second quarter.
DeJuan Dixson fired a 12-
yard touchdown pass to
Dimitri Giannapoulos as the
score was 20-13 in favor of
the Rams at halftime. Milton
then ran for the conversion
From there, the Rams
took over the game. Walker’s
12-yard touchdown
dash started things in the
third quarter. Trai Scott
scored the conversion run.
Later in the third quarter,
Childs burst 11 yards for
a touchdown, and Walker
scored the conversion point
with a nifty run.
Scott wrapped up the
scoring with a 6-yard dash
Continued from Page 1B
In high school tennis
circles, it has often been
discussed that District 22-
5A is not one of the better
leagues for competition.
Both Deer Park and Dobie
possess histories of success
at the regional level,
and Memorial has advanced
a time or two in its short
history.
Beyond that, Pasadena,
South Houston and Sam
Rayburn do not have legacies
of power.
That point being made,
Dobie is making no apologies
for its 4-0 start this season,
which has included just
two total match losses in
wins over South Houston,
Pasadena and Sam Rayburn.
With a 10-9 win over
Memorial and subsequent
18-1 beating of South
Houston, Dobie has given
itself a chance at winning
the 22-5A regular season
title, which this year also
brings an automatic Region
III tournament berth.
At worst, Dobie will finish
second and will therefore
play two home matches
in the 22-5A postseason
tournament, which begins
Oct. 19 and concludes Oct.
22-23.
The Longhorns’ run has
come in spite of the fact that
Moreno’s roster featured little
varsity experience when
the season began.
“I really think we have
benefited from playing 20
matches to this point in the
season,” Moreno said.
“That’s a lot of matches
to play in two months, but
I thought coming into the
season that we would benefit
best from match experience.
So far, we are 10-9-1
and have gained confidence
is most important and we
Heading into the 22-5A
regular season finale against
Deer Park, Moreno isn’t
sure what to expect.
Using Memorial as a
measuring stick, Moreno
knows his team scored a
narrow 10-9 victory, but
Deer Park’s margin over
Memorial was just 11-8.
Throw in the fact that
no pass, no play takes effect
Oct. 8 at 2:30 p.m., and
Moreno is even more cautious.
“It’s going to be close
with Deer Park,” Moreno
said. “You really can’t go
by results on paper. Taking
in account possible injuries
and grades, and you don’t
know what to expect by
Tuesday (Oct. 12).
“I’ve said all along that
we were going to have to
win a lot of matches 10-9.
Getting that 10th win is the
key. We were able to get that
against Memorial, and we’ll
have to figure out a way to
get that against Deer Park.”
Historically, Dobie has
succeeded by jumping to
a lead after the doubles,
and then working to secure
crucial singles victories
thereafter. It doesn’t matter
which combinations of
players win, as long as it
gets done.
“Getting ahead after the
doubles is a must for us
just about every time out,”
Moreno said.
“Our kids are confident.
You can see that they expect
to win every time out.”
