games, the Longhorns are
coming off a bye week. With
the exception of one or two
players, everyone has had a
chance to heal up a bit and
recharge the batteries.
The final five weeks
of the regular season will
come one at a time, but the
goal will be the same.
Dobie will meet Pasadena
Oct. 8 at Newcomb
Field to kick off the District
22-5A schedule for both
teams.
Dry cleaned suits, freshly
pressed shirts, recently
JFD tennis still unbeaten in 22-5A race
Dobie’s action plan en
route to reaching the Region
III varsity team tennis tournament
is working out just
fine for now, but now the
team may have its toughest
challenge ahead.
After beating the South
Houston Trojans 18-1 Oct.
5 at Dobie, the Longhorns
stayed unbeaten at 4-0 in
District 22-5A action. Now
comes the capper.
The Longhorns are set to
take on Deer Park, also 4-0,
on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 3:30
p.m. Both teams are in great
position for the postseason
22-5A tournament, but there
is still so much at stake.
The Dobie-Deer Park
winner will not only gain a
bye all the way to the 22-5A
tournament championship
round but will also earn a
Region III tournament seeding.
“This is what we have
been playing and planning
for,” Dobie head coach
Manuel Moreno Jr. said.
“Beating Deer Park is
not a do-or-die situation in
terms of the postseason, but
it would be a big accomplishment.
I’m just proud
of our kids for getting to
this position and having this
chance. Having said that,
we want to beat Deer Park.”
The Longhorns and Deer
have thus far dominated 22-
5A play.
Cowboys sweep
Sharks in rout
at EFL Park
Each of the Sagemont
Cowboys teams remained
in serious playoff
contention after a
sweep over the Magnolia
Park Sharks Oct. 2
at El Franco Lee Park.
The Cowboys’ senior
division team began the
day with a rousing 32-0
victory over the Magnolia
Park Sharks. Along
the way, the winners
got great defensive play
from everyone, including
Shamaud Smith-
Kizzie (making tackle at
right). Smith-Kizzie also
scored a touchdown in
the game as the Cowboys
improved to 6-1 with the
victory. Sagemont’s other
three teams also won
big games in the series,
leaving each well within
the mix for the postseason.
Lady Longhorn Shannon Veal is just one of the many players who have contributed
to the team’s 4-0 start in varsity team tennis action. As Dobie downed South
Houston Oct. 5 at Dobie, Veal scored both a win in girls’ doubles with partner Chloe
Escobar and then captured a No. 6 girls’ singles victory. Photo by John Bechtle
Dobie VB bounces back, CB goes to 5-3
Thanks to a three-match
winning streak, Clear
Brook’s varsity volleyball
bought evening dresses and
mums are beautiful and
all, but all Phillips and the
Longhorns want for homecoming
is a victory.
“I’ve explained to the
players that basically homecoming
is for everybody
else to enjoy,” Phillips said.
“Our job is to go out and
win a football game, and
right now that is all we are
focused on.”
Dobie should enter the
game with plenty of confidence.
The team has a winning
record at 3-2 entering
team has vastly improved
its standing in the District
24-5A ranks after a slow
The Clear Brook varsity
volleyball team, including,
from left, Kendra
Turley, Crystal Young
and Caiti O’Connell,
has jumped back into
the chase for the 24-5A
title with three straight
wins.
play, and a defense that
offered little more than a
handful of question marks
has played exceptionally
well. Phillips is excited
about beginning district action.
“In the game of football,
anything can happen,” Phillips
said. “We have seen
what Pasadena is capable
of doing from an offensive
standpoint, but our defense
has really come on and
played well.
“Coach (Carey) Sink and
the staff have done a great
start, while at Dobie the
Lady Longhorns are holding
steady at 2-2 after a split
of two matches.
CB tied for third place
Sitting at 2-3 after a loss
to Clear Lake in the first half
of district play, the Lady
Wolverines were in need of
a big turnaround.
So far, so good. Clear
Brook has suddenly reeled
off three straight wins to
get to 5-3, which counts for
a third-place tie with Pearland.
The Lady Wolverines
began their run by sweeping
past Pearland and then
closed out the first half of
district play with a marathon
win at Dickinson.
Alicia Dittrich, a fouryear
member of the varsity
team, stepped up at the
right time as she slammed a
match-high 24 kills in a 25-
18, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 20-
18 victory over Dickinson.
The senior middle blocker
came back with 17 more
as the Lady Wolverines easily
swept Alvin 25-12, 25-
19, 25-16 Oct. 5.
job of getting players in the
right spots, and the players
have responded with a great
effort. I’m very pleased
with that aspect of our football
team.”
If the Longhorns are
able to effectively slow the
Eagles’ option attack, the
home team should be looking
fairly good.
Although running backs
Andrew Robinson and Davion
Hurst have nursed injuries
over the past couple of
weeks, Demarcus Boyd has
been consistently spectacular.
Quarterback Blake Jackson
has improved steadily
as a combo passing/running
quarterback, and the receivers
have played well above
expectations.
“We spent the bye week
getting back to the fundamentals,”
Phillips said.
“You can work on those
things prior to the season,
but then you have to go out
and play games. In our non-
