2013 SEASON

ARTISTS IN PARKS
The South Carolina State Park Service is
pleased to announce the 2013 season of its
Artist-in-Residence program. Artists will
have the opportunity to become part of a
growing number of resident artists from
state and national parks who relate the
park in their works.
Artists have long had an impact on our
perceptions of parks. In the American
West, painters and photographers
documented spectacular landscapes for
audiences who had never seen such sights.
Dramatic photographs, paintings and
other art forms helped to stimulate the
establishment of many of our parks and
continue to foster an appreciation of them.
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
The Artist-in-Residence program provides
artists with the opportunity to gain
inspiration from the natural and cultural
resources of South Carolina State Parks.
The Artist-in-Residence program is open
to all artists whose work can interpret the
park’s natural and/or cultural resources.
We offer painters, photographers, potters,
sculptors, weavers and other artists the
opportunity to capture the natural and
historical resources of South Carolina State
Parks. Collaborative proposals will be
considered.
The South Carolina State Park Service will
provide the use of a cabin to selected
participants for a one-week period.
Amenities include a kitchen, bathroom,
basic cooking equipment, electricity, water,
and all linens. Cabins sleep up to four
people, and no pets are allowed inside of
the cabins. Transportation to and from
the selected park will be the responsibility
of the selected artist. The artist should
bring all personal gear, food, and art
supplies.
In return, the participating artists will
donate an original work representative of
their stay at their selected park within 90
days of their residency. The original work
will be displayed in the cabins and other
facilities throughout the park. The
finished artwork should reflect a part of
the artist’s residing park for present and
future generations.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
A jury will be comprised of state park
representatives. The selected artist will
be assigned a South Carolina State Park
with overnight cabin facilities. Their
residency date will be determined by the
availability of the cabins per their
assigned park. Artists will be responsible
for contacting their assigned park for
their cabin reservation.
The Artist-In-Residence program is
open to all art forms, but those that
manipulate or disturb the park’s
resources, or utilize materials from
endangered or threatened species will be
excluded. Collecting materials from
state park property is not permitted.
Selections are made without regard to race,
religion, marital status, sex, age or national
origin.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications must be postmarked by
October 31, 2012. All artists’ work must
be original. SCPRT employees are not
eligible to apply. Please include the
following with application:
1. A resume including a summary of
creative works.
2. A one to two page statement
explaining what you hope to
achieve from the residency and
times you are interested in doing
your residency.
3. CD’s, DVD’s, pictures, or other
samples of previous work.
No slides please.
One self-addressed stamped
envelope (if you wish your
samples returned).
4. Complete entry form.
5. $15 application fee (nonrefundable)
