We stand in the midst of a rapidly-changing health care environment — some refer
to it as a “brave new world” in health delivery. Regardless of what you call it, one thing
is clear — there is no more status quo in health care.
The current paradigm of a hospital-centric health care
system is shifting. The world where physicians and hospitals
operate in silos — where diagnostic tests are repeated and
each entity keeps an isolated record of a patient’s care — is
becoming obsolete and with it the practice of payment for
each service provided.
The current system that is designed to deal with an
episode in your life — not who and what you are as a
whole or how you live your life — is going away.
No one can predict for certain what the health care of
tomorrow will look like, but we think we have a pretty good
idea. We know there will be an ever-increasing pressure
from government, payors and the public to lower costs and
improve quality — we are already experiencing the nascent
stages of these new expectations. Beyond that, we know it
will require a nimble and agile organization that can channel
its broad resources to meet an always-moving target.
Southcoast has seen this change coming and has spent the past
few years getting ready for it. We feel we are well prepared to meet
its challenges.
Health care delivery is moving toward a model of managing
the health of a population — a model that will require hospitals,
physicians and caregivers to work together to take care of the health
needs of a large group of people. Not just when you are sick — but
all the time. To succeed in this new environment, we need to work
harder to make sure you don’t get sick and reduce the likelihood
that you will end up in a hospital. In short, we have to improve the
health status of everyone.
When you do get sick, we need to take care of you in a coordinated
way. Your doctors will all need to talk to each other; they will all use
an electronic health record that everyone on your care team can
access — and even you can access — and they will only give you
the tests and procedures you need. Because we won’t get paid for
what we do — we will get rewarded for how healthy you are.

This is the vision many are calling “Accountable Care” and
Accountable Care Organizations. We feel accountability will be a
given in this new world, so we at Southcoast tend to like to call it
“Integrated Care,” because it focuses more on what we need to do
— together — to improve the health of the population. Under our
definition of “Integrated Care,” this is what you and a population
of patients will find:
• A patient-centered home where you will receive primary care
and your doctors will work to manage your health and wellness.
• A new approach that rewards coordination, efficiency and
productivity where all of your providers work together as a team
to make sure you first have the best preventive care and then
have the best treatment when you need it.
• A real alignment of specialists, ancillary services and hospitals
that are focused on one thing — quality outcomes. This happens
through care integration and coordination and an information
technology infrastructure that spans across provider networks.
• And finally a reimbursement model that rewards value over
volume. That means we as a health system and providers are
taking the financial risk that we will care for you and others in
our population in a quality-driven and cost-effective manner.
There is also the concept of “Triple Aim,” which was coined
by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Triple Aim defines
success as simultaneously achieving three critical objectives:
• Improving the health of the population we serve.
• Improving and enhancing the patient care experience —
meaning quality, access and reliability.
• And reducing the per capita cost of care.
Achieving Triple Aim will come through truly integrating care.
At Southcoast, we also call this “systemness” — our focus on integrating
all aspects of Southcoast Health System so that everyone is
aligned along our strategic priorities with a focus on developing
new initiatives, new service lines and new patient-centric programs
that will improve the coordination and integration of care. It also
means creating a great place to work for all of our clinicians,
providers and staff.
It’s a huge endeavor — and we won’t get there alone. That is
why we joined with 27 other leading health systems across the
country in a collaborative effort to collectively build a model that
adds value to all of our health care systems.
There remain significant known challenges and obstacles we
have not yet anticipated. But, with a new structure that is focused
on quality, strategy and agility, Southcoast is as ready as any
organization in the nation to thrive in the health care of the future.
We are thriving right now. Among our many achievements are
being ranked among the top 5 percent in the country in patient
safety and in total cardiac care by HealthGrades ® . We have earned
affiliation with MD Anderson Physicians Network ® , the nation’s
leader in cancer care, to offer advanced treatment for cancer patients
in Southeastern Massachusetts.
And we have made great strides toward not only increasing
access to health care but developing our Integrated System of Care.
• We continue to recruit new physicians to the area to ensure vital
access to primary and specialty care.
• We continue the development of our electronic medical records
system to build complete health records for our patients, accessible
to all who need such information yet safe and secure.
• We established a new ambulatory campus in Wareham at the
Rosebrook Medical Office Park, which will include physician
practices and laboratory and radiology services.
We achieved much of this through the help of you, our many
generous donors who, despite one of the roughest economies in
anyone’s memory, have steadfastly believed in Southcoast and
stepped forward to ensure we have the resources to advance the
level of care in our region. Thank you so much for your support
of community health care and Southcoast.
Southcoast is a strong organization — and one that will grow

In 2010, HealthGrades ® — the nation’s most trusted,
independent provider of health care information —
named Southcoast as one of just seven hospitals in
Massachusetts to receive the HealthGrades Patient Safety
Excellence Award, ranking in the top 5 percent of
hospitals in the U.S. for patient safety. HealthGrades
also bestowed numerous accolades upon Southcoast for

Group through its Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care
is the first hospital in New England to have an exclusive
local affiliation with the prestigious MD Anderson
Physicians Network and is one of only a few affiliates
in the U.S. The MD Anderson Physicians Network
affiliation is offered selectively to qualified community
hospitals and their medical staffs only after a rigorous
evaluation based on evidence-based treatment guidelines
and quality management. Because of this relationship,
and bring more than 100 evidence-based treatment
regimens for almost every type and phase of cancer to
the community.

• Southcoast’s weight-loss surgery program was named
a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American
Society for Bariatric Surgery.
• Southcoast’s Breast Imaging Centers were the first in
the South Coast region to be designated as Centers

Our nursing and other caregiving staff combines advanced
skills with dedication and heartfelt compassion that
results in an unmatched level of care. Our nurses practice
where they live so their commitment to their patients is
on par with their commitment to their families. Yet, they
are encouraged to advance their education and build
their skills through a robust tuition reimbursement
department. The result is a care team that combines
big-city skill with down-home comfort.
Southcoast has also been working to ensure access to
primary and specialty care outside our hospital walls
through the energetic recruitment of physicians to the
area. In the past three years, Southcoast recruited more
than 85 physicians to the region.

In anticipation of moving toward an integrated system
of care — one where hospitals, physicians and caregivers
work together to provide seamless comprehensive care
that is high in quality and efficiency — Southcoast has
been developing a network of physician practices to
guarantee our patients access to the care they need.
Some practices are owned by Southcoast while others
have entered into agreements with us that provide them
with infrastructure and operations support integral to
thriving in the changing health care environment. The
result is increased access to care for the region and an
improved continuum of care for patients that not only
serves them when they are ill, but works to improve
their overall health status.

Southcoast continues to invest millions in new technology
throughout the system, always with an eye on the
future. Whether it is cancer care, heart disease, neurosurgery,
breast imaging or the need for readily available
medical records, Southcoast has the latest technology.
The Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care in Fall River
and Fairhaven feature the latest technologies in
radiation therapy and medical oncology including
brachytherapy, image guided radiation therapy (IGRT),
stereotactic radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiation
therapy (IMRT) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery
(VATS).
A well-functioning integrated system of care requires
the ready and secure availability of up-to-date patient
information to all members of a patient’s care team.
Southcoast is in the midst of a transition to electronic
medical records that will make this necessity a reality.

Southcoast strives to provide its patients with the right
care, in the right place at the right time, whether it be
advanced surgery, outpatient services or primary care.
In 2010, Southcoast completed renovations of the
Mitchell Building on the Charlton campus — home of
the Fall River site of the Southcoast Centers for Cancer
Care — and unveiled the new site for the Jarabek Diagnostic
& Treatment Center. The move consolidated all
Fall River cancer care services conveniently in one building
with radiation oncology on the first floor and medical
oncology (chemotherapy) on the second floor at the
Jarabek Center.
Progress continued on the flagship site of the Southcoast
Centers for Cancer Care in Fairhaven. The opening
of the center in summer 2011 will bring comprehensive
cancer care to the chronically underserved eastern region

a seamless continuum of care throughout the entire
health system — a program that supports not only
patients’ medical needs, but also their emotional and
social needs — ensuring they have the most technologically-advanced

In 2010, Southcoast also entered into an agreement
with A.D. Makepeace Company to occupy a 67,000
square foot office building in Wareham. The Rosebrook
Medical Center — opening in 2011 — will allow Southcoast
to consolidate primary care physician services,
specialty practices, a laboratory and an imaging center
into one convenient setting that is easily accessible.

Community hospitals are at their best when they are
governed by members of the community they serve —
that has been one of Southcoast’s strengths since its
creation in 1996 and with its legacy institutions since 1884.
At time of the merger, a governance structure was
created that was appropriate for the existing health care
environment — one board for the Hospitals Group and
a second board for the parent organization, the Health
System. Thanks to the selfless and extraordinary efforts
of many members of these boards over the past 14 years,
this structure served us well.
But as we move forward to confront the new health
care environment, the trustees wanted to make certain
that our governance structure was still appropriate and
effective. That wish inspired a two-year, rigorous review
of the structure of Southcoast’s boards and committees.
After extensive discussions — and with the valued
guidance of the leadership of our medical staffs —
the decision was made to combine board membership,
creating “mirror boards” for the Health System and
Hospitals Group with the same members and officers.
As a result, Southcoast has transitioned from two boards

The boards have a robust sub-committee structure so
that trustees can pay close attention to all aspects of our
combined operations while allowing for more time at
general board meetings to discuss broader, strategic issues.

oncology services previously available in the region. It
will offer a nearly complete range of cancer care provided

of experienced oncology nurses and clinical
and support personnel.

Plan on giving; defer your gift
It is easy to support your community hospital without
making an impact on your present finances. Planned
gifts allow you to make a meaningful gift to Southcoast
while remaining in possession of your assets.
Bequests
A bequest is a donation made through your will and
provides you with a simple, risk-free way to support
Southcoast. You continue to own the gifted property
throughout your lifetime to use as you wish. The added
benefit of a bequest is that it costs nothing to create,
which can be important in changing economic times.
If you are not sure how to set up a bequest, we can
provide you with simple language to review with your
attorney and include in your will. If you do not have
a will, we encourage you to work with your attorney
to prepare one. It is the best way to protect your loved
ones and to ensure your assets are distributed according
to your wishes.
Beneficiary Designations
Naming Southcoast as a beneficiary of a donor-advised
fund or retirement savings account is another no-cost
way to provide a lasting gift.

You may name one or more charities as beneficiaries of
a donor-advised fund — to receive the remaining dollars
after your death. A beneficiary designation form can be
obtained through the trustee of your fund.
