That is St. Jude—the world’s premier center for the study of pediatric cancer. The work going on in this unique hospital truly seems blessed by saints and angels. To be part of it is exhilarating, frustrating, challenging, gratifying. And to Dr. Bill Evans, new director and CEO, the rare opportunity to orchestrate the work of the world’s most brilliant and dedicated scientists, including his wife Dr. Mary Relling, is tantamount to handing a Stradivarius to a virtuoso violinist who understands its potential for making remarkable music and his own duty to draw from it the most beautiful notes possible for the short time it’s in his hands. Page 12 Down on the Farm Born and raised on a Western Kentucky farm, Dr. James Jackson remains a country boy at heart. An award-winning faculty member at the University of Kentucky, he and his family live on a farm in nearby Mercer County. But Jackson never forgot his first alma mater. As a member of a “colony” of Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) at APSU, Jackson never had been inducted into the fraternity, but he cared enough to fix that. In Spring 2005, he received a warm welcome from the brothers of AGR when he returned to APSU to be initiated along with the class of new—and very young—members. Page 18 Yin and Yang The Landrums’ strong, enduring relationship proves opposites not only attract, they can provide a healthy balance. Ken Landrum—forging full steam ahead into the world of big-time insurance business, with its ulcer-producing pace, mergers and hostile takeovers —reached the pinnacle through gritty determination, great business acumen and, some might say, sheer stubbornness. Because of his phenomenal success, he was able to bow out early—as executive vice president of a major international conglomerate. Amy, while enjoying her own teaching career, remained her husband’s steady anchor, key adviser and best friend. Now retired, the two have no intention of going quietly into that good night. It’s full throttle into the future —together. I hope you’ll find the following pages informative and entertaining as you read of what’s happening among fellow alumni and on campus. Yes, we’re busily preparing for Homecoming 2005, and hope you already have marked Nov. 5 on your calendar and are making plans to join us this year for “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Be sure to take a look at page 16 to learn about the many exciting activities that have been planned. I do want to encourage you to attend Homecoming. Many volunteers have devoted numerous hours assisting APSU personnel in planning events for everyone to enjoy. Homecoming is a special time for us to return to our alma mater and reunite with old friends and former classmates, catch up on the latest news and see what’s happening on campus. The best way to thank these volunteers for their hard work is by attending these events. Contact friends and former classmates you haven’t seen recently and make plans to “come home” on Nov. 5. You’ll be glad you did! As we continue our recognition of graduates from the various colleges, the reunion group being honored this year is the College of Science and Mathematics. Events also are planned for other special groups, along with many activities in which everyone can participate. A complete listing can be found on the Homecoming link at www.apsu.edu. As always, we want to hear what’s happening in your life so we can share that info with other alumni through future issues of “Austin Peay.” To continue to receive our mailings, be sure to keep your address information updated with us.
