The <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Ute</strong> Bear Dance contest powwow was held at the Sky<br />
<strong>Ute</strong> Fairgrounds from Friday, May 27 through Saturday, May 28.<br />
Ignacio drum group, Yellow Jacket (top left), filled the auditorium<br />
with songs throughout the weekend. Gourd dancer Tom Alires (top<br />
right) and his two sons, Keaton and Keifer partake in Friday night’s<br />
opening Gourd Dance. The Bear Dance powwow drew dancers and<br />
vendors from around the Four-Corners region for this weekend<br />
celebration.<br />

Exhibit Hall on Saturday,<br />
May 28. The event was hosted<br />
by Mike Santistevan with 14<br />
teams competing during the<br />
one-day tournament held<br />
coinciding with the Bear<br />
Dance Powwow in the<br />
adjacent indoor arena.<br />
Results: Hammy-n-Team,<br />
first place ($2,800); Eva<br />
Colorow, second place<br />
($1,800); Darwin, third place<br />
($1,300); and Tilden, fourth<br />
place ($500).<br />
