News @ Cedar Creek Company
It is with enthusiasm that we present our first newsletter since Cedar Creek
Company acquired Sastek on the 1st of August 2008. Our expanded company is
operating under the Cedar Creek Company banner and the Sastek name lives on
through the delivery and development of our harsh environment hardware. The
Sastek range has proven its reliability with decades of superior performance, and
now forms the basis for our core product range.
Our shared history, and the recent merging of our proud teams have added to our
collective strength and have truly established Cedar Creek Company as a pre-eminent
supplier of technology to the perishable food industries in Australia and around the
world.
This acquisition has enabled Cedar Creek Company to achieve economies of scale,
and the consequential productivity gains we have made place us in an enviable position
to deliver certainty for our clients in the face of the changing international economic
environment.
Every year our clients grow, produce and trade literally millions of tonnes of perishable produce. Our process systems,
logistics, and mobility solutions help distribute these products to leading food retailers both locally and internationally. Our
clients place enormous demands everyday on their teams and our systems, therefore, our systems become a critical part of
the process and must be highly functional and reliable.
Key solutions include:
• Sastek
harsh environment hardware solutions
• VIAscan
vision systems for carcase yield management
• FoodChain
software systems
• Mobility Solutions wireless enterprise mobility
• Labelling Solutions label consumables & application technologies
• HookTrack
RFID hook tracking systems
Our research and development teams headed by Sean Clitheroe and Ian Carson are focused on anticipating our clients’
needs and creating solutions before being asked. We are nimble enough to respond to industry change and strong enough
to lead innovative developments that provide measurable outcomes for our clients. The search for productivity gains is a
continuous theme of our R&D programs.
Cedar Creek Company aims to be the first choice and preferred supplier to both our traditional perishable and new fresh
supply markets.
For decades we have been providing systems which allow our clients to measure and determine production methodologies
throughout their facilities. These end to end systems produce a database capable of delivering traceability from the farm
through production to warehouse and from the warehouse to the plate. True traceability is an outcome of that data.
Today we are seeing consistent enquiry for the transfer of our knowledge and disciplines learnt in the meat industries to the
fresh produce industries. Yesterday we purchased a lettuce; today a salad is delivered in a consumer ready bag. The time to
market from harvest to consumption is shorter, more complex and the risks have expanded substantially.
Perishable logistics rely heavily on real time information about quality and availability. For example when product is rejected
it has a major impact on deliverables. The technology we implement allows significant improvements in handing these
variables through communication tools which talk to each other and report these changes and allow facilities to maintain
high level product throughput. The capital invested is often returned with gains in productivity and quality that far outweigh
the initial cost.
It is with pride that we offer to you the services of Cedar Creek Company. Our people are absolutely passionate about
what they do and take great pride in the products and services we deliver. I give you my personal commitment that our
team will deliver the right product and supply the right solution for your business.
Yours sincerely,
Tony Abbott – Director
Bu s y.... Bu s y.... Bu s y
The past few months have been a
very busy period for us. We have
had staff move offices, implemented
renovations to our existing head
office in Kelvin Grove in order
to accommodate the increased
numbers now within our business,
and have all gotten acquainted
with all of the fantastic new faces
now working together in this great
team.
The positive attitude and feeling
now flowing within the office can
only mean great things are afoot
and we strive to take this positive
feeling into the marketplace and to
our customers.
By no means is this busy time
over as we begin new plans
for increased customer visits,
improving our software and
hardware solutions and taking the
Cedar Creek Company offering to
FOOD chain
software systems
The Foodchain modular software system fully integrates the whole supply chain, from sales
orders received via the Web to production control on the shop floor through to placing orders
via e-commerce with suppliers utilising EDI or XML standards.
All aspects of a company’s activities can be controlled and monitored via the system. All
inventory owned by a company can be traced within the system including perishable food
products, ingredients, packaging, engineering spares, consumables and office supplies. All
items can be tracked using their standard or actual cost.
By providing total integration, all costs and revenues can be recorded allowing for profit
analysis as the goods leave the store. All financial information is passed through to the
sophisticated financial and executive reporting systems or through an interface routine
to existing financials.
The Foodchain software system provides back office and on floor harsh environment
solutions across many industries, including:
• Meat & Livestock Processing
• Fresh Produce & Processing
• Food Service
• Seafood Processing
We look forward to hearing
from you throughout 2009
and thank you for your
continued support.
MOBILITY solutions
Enterprise Wireless Mobility
The technology that has evolved around wireless devices today has increasingly allowed for greater mobility of the workforce to take place.
Increased mobility and the use of wireless devices address a number of issues that exist in business today. The greatest benefit that can be
derived across all industries is the availability of information at the point of process.
This seamless mobility of information access for the workforce, provides for real time data access, allowing
for offsite access to inventory, sales, customer and service data. The end result is a greater flow of information
throughout the organisation. Benefits can be seen from the perspective of all departments within an organisation,
in particular operations, dispatch and customer service.
We provide customised mobility solutions and devices across many industries, including:
HOOK track
”
RFID solutions
Our RFID Hook Tracking solutions are successfully installed throughout many leading processing facilities, providing complete data integrity
from the kill floor, through the boning room and to the quarter load-out.
Each hook contains an embedded RFID tag onto which a unique identity is assigned. When a carcase is
attached to it, both hook and meat travel through the production facility together
Scanners in key locations throughout the abattoir keep a track of the tag’s movement as it is passes
through various processes, allowing the collation of key data for each specific animal.

The VIAscan® Sheep Carcase System has successfully completed
a series of trials conducted by the French Lamb Industry for
the on-line objective assessment of EUROP Conformation and
Fat Score, and yield. Cedar Creek’s VIAscan Technology has
been localised to meet the language and specific needs of lamb
processors in France and has been installed across a range of
major processing regions.
The French Lamb Industry currently utilises the subjective
value grading system commonly used through northern Europe.
However, the challenges presented by inconsistent grading across
various processing plants and the relatively poor correlation of
manual grading to actual carcase value has prompted the industry
to consider more accurate objective technologies.
Cedar Creek is partnering with French company Normaclass to
provide local support and market knowledge. Normaclass has a
strong foundation in the on-line objective measurement of beef
carcases in France and broader European markets.
