CFMEU YOUNG ACTIVISTS with Rob Pearson Time for younger members to be educated A NEW AND BETTER VENUE The CFMEU had their first meeting on the 19th of February at our new host venue in Leederville “Fibber McGee’s” We have changed our venue to Fibber McGee’s as there is more parking than in the city and it is close to Leederville Train station and should be easier to get to for the vast majority of our members. Fibbers must also have the best food in town! Over a few beers many issues were discussed and debated. The agenda included topics such as the locals jobs first rally, a quick debrief from the union elections held before Christmas, what’s been happening on our individual sites as well as what’s been happening around Perth and a few reports of the goings-on in the eastern states. ISSUES The concerns raised by the young activists at the meeting and by phone calls I have been having lately is: • Lack of consistent work, and that we have to be at the beckon call of the Labour/Body hire companies, • Safety on site, supervisors telling people that they have to do tasks that are not necessarily safe, and • 4 and 1 rosters in the North West These issues and others will now be taken back to the Management Committee of the union so that they know that these are the main concerns and worries of the younger members of the rank and file. GUEST SPEAKER TONY COOKE Tony Cooke was our guest speaker and everyone on the night found him very to be very interesting. He spoke about his time as Secretary of the TLC in the nineties, heading up the protests and marches of the first, second and third waves which made up the early days of John Howards “Work Choices” and the instrumentation of individual contracts. Tony also spoke of when 25,000 people marched on Parliament House and the beginning of Solidarity Park. GET EDUCATED Something that I ask people to remember, especially our colleagues out there who were part of these YACS meet at Fibber McGees in Leederville demonstrations, is that the Young Activists are primarily between the ages of 18-35. Most had not yet started their working lives and were still in primary school or just starting high school when these issues were tackled. So to hear the reflections of people like Tony Cooke and others of what can be, and has been, achieved by our union, the union movement and a community as a whole when faced with draconian laws and government policies to oppress workers’ rights is inspiring. I believe it is a very important part of not just becoming a more involved and more educated union member, but is instrumental in becoming a dedicated lifelong Trade Unionist. It’s a good idea if you want to be educated about the union and what it has done for you to get a copy of the book “If you don’t fight, you lose”. It’s free and available at the CFMEU office or ask an Organiser for a copy. In what could start a new craze out there on sites, Leandra paid a visit to the hairdresser for a Eureka Cut. We think it looked awesome, passion personified.
