Workshop Abstract
With increasing complexity in well construction and attendant rise in operating costs, operators
are seeking new and innovative ways of improving their efficiency to yield lower technical costs of
construction. Integrated services has evolved as a unique model allowing operators and service
companies to achieve the desired results as it provides the platform to utilise the strengths and
knowledge of all concerned to design and implement more cost-effective field developments.
Integrated services (IS), simply put, is the packaging of various services or products under a single
contract and/or interface by the oil company. These IS contracts are normally project-specific, leaving
fewer contractors to deal with, and have recently been driven by other issues outside performance
efficiency which include resource constraints on the part of the operator, security and geopolitical issues
requiring controlled footprint in a given location, and investment reasons. They are designed to improve
resource utilisation, integrate technical solutions, reduce risk, and deliver better quality and health, safety
and environmental performance.
Several models of integrated services have since evolved and the industry now has over a decade of
experience to share. The focus on integrated services has also grown in the Middle East region with a
large portion of the construction contracts in place using integrated business models of diverse forms
for well construction and production activities.
Workshop Objectives
This workshop will focus on challenges and models available and applicable to the Middle East, review
international best practices related to integrated services, and share regional experiences from a positive
and negative standpoint.
Schedule
Monday, 29 April 2013
0800–8030 hours Registration, Collection of Badges and Delegate Packs
0830–8045 hours Seating/Safety Briefing by Hotel; Welcome by Co-Chairperson and Committee Introduction
0845–9000 hours Workshop Opening Keynote Speech
9000–1000 hours Session 1: What are Integrated Well Construction Services? Overview and Vision
Session Chairs: Abdulla Al Tamimi, ADMA-OPCO; Femi Adewumi, Schlumberger
This session will be used to review and present the possible definitions, perceptions, and expectations of integrated well
construction services, given that the underlying drivers and goals are diverse and defined by the different perspectives of
the different sectors of the industry.
International and national oil companies, drilling contractors, service companies, and government regulatory and
investment teams are invited to discuss and present their perspectives and expectations, to attempt to evolve a converging
definition for integrated well construction services.
1000–1040 hours Panel Discussion and Q&A
1040–1100 hours Coffee Break/Group Photograph
1100–1230 hours Session 2: Industry Models and Adaptability to the MENA Region
Session Chairs: Olav M. Skår, Shell; Rajneesh Kumar, BAPCO
This session addresses the need for integrated drilling services as a way forward for optimising well delivery and
discusses environmental sustainability and life cycle consideration from well design though construction, production, well
maintenance through ONE service provider. This would not only make sense in economical terms as it would lower the
cost per barrel but it would add more reservoir by meeting the different objectives in different regions or different projects.
As a guideline for an action plan, we will analyse case histories and projects from regions outside MENA like Russia,
Mexico, Brazil, and also get to know the best practices keeping in mind geopolitics, security, profitability and economic
viability, local infrastructure, and time limit to achieve targets.
1230–1330 hours Luncheon
1330–1500 hours Session 3: Contracting Process and Challenges
Session Chair: Willem Koetsier, Baker Hughes
This session addresses the contracting process for an integrated drilling project which can be a long and strenuous
process. Roles and responsibilities will transfer from operator to service company as will associated risks in the execution
including blow-out and pollution. Depending on scope, a balance needs to be struck in the contract between risk and
reward, to create a win-win situation for both operator and service-company without compromising HSE, well integrity,
and profitability. A well-structured contract is therefore pivotal to the success of an integrated drilling project as well as to
achieving the objectives of all parties involved.
General Information
Tuesday, 30 April 2013
0830–1000 hours Session 4: Optimising Well Delivery Performance with Integrated Services I
Session Chairs: Atif A. Abdel Aziz, Weatherford; Erhan Isevcan, Halliburton
How can we engage operators and service companies during contract execution; are we compliant with the T&Cs;
will it be easy to get the required approvals on time to optimise the well delivery performance?
Operators and service companies are required to work as partners to deliver performance, the objectives should
be clearly defined. Will this be applicable to every project? How can we be more efficient, continuously improve
quality, reduce NPT, and eventually achieve the ultimate goal of delivery performance?
Where does the supply chain fit in this puzzle?
This session aims to answer most of the questions above. The following topics will be discussed with the
participants:
• Integration between service and operators—contract execution, approvals
• Performance drilling in integrated services—Integrated BHA bits/motors
• Well construction and integrated services—performance drilling, cementing, rig management, well design,
AFE, time depth, and ROI
• Reward mechanism and performance contracts
• Efficiency, quality, and NPT reduction
• Supply chain—role of planners, logistics, and CAPEX
1000–1020 hours Coffee Break
1020–1300 hours Session 5: Optimising Well Delivery Performance with Integrated Services II
Session Chairs: Erhan Isevcan, Halliburton;
Said Al Harthi, Petroleum Development Oman
Technology is the key success factor in the oil and gas industry especially in drilling. Therefore this session
will encourage participants to identify the benefits of technology in integrated services. Technology not only
contributes in favour of enhanced well delivery process, but it also plays a valuable role in the decision making
and the achievement of corporate objectives. The optimum performance of the well delivery process through
integrated services is accomplished by gathering valuable data, monitoring drilling parameters in real-time, and
implementing fit-for-purpose technologies to add necessary value to the business. Along with best practices, the
session will focus on creating an effective integrated service model for which participants will brainstorm on the
following topics:
• Identification of fit-for-purpose technologies and its implementation in an integrated environment
• Integration, technology, and decision making—align the objectives
• Real-time monitoring—analysis, surveillance, and decisions
• Data capturing, improving drilling curve through knowledge management
• Talent and retention
1300–1400 hours Luncheon
1400–1510 hours Breakout Session
1510–1530 hours Working Coffee
1530–1630 hours Session 6: Integrated Service Opportunities
Session Chairs: Hamad Saleh Al Junaibi, ZADCO; Imran Butt, Baker Hughes
In our evolving oil and gas industry, an integrated services approach is the ideal solution to providing compatible
and fit-for-purpose technologies with solo accountability across all inter-related services, to ensure successful
well construction. This last session of the workshop will share the vision for the region and discuss possible
future opportunities. This session will be very beneficial to both the service companies and the operators as both
will be able to discuss the demand and supply of integrated services in the region. Some upcoming projects
will be elaborated upon and there will be also an open discussion on operators’ expectations. The views of the
governing bodies will also be presented and hence this session will provide an outlook for the future and closure
to this workshop.
