Workshop Description
The right data at the right time is critical for effective decision-making. As a fully integrated E&P company
needs to make decisions at operational, tactical, and strategic levels each of this needs a specific dataset. The
type of data needed to support an operational decision may vary from data needed to support tactical and
strategic decisions in terms of its timing, quality, granularity, aggregation, and presentation. The workshop
will discuss the increasingly critical role played by data in order to support decision makers. Participants will
discuss and share their experiences with the multiple facets of data needed to support decision making.
Decision makers in all industries, especially oil and gas, are relying increasingly on data to make decisions.
This reliance is spurring the need to go beyond classical techniques for gathering and analysing statistics,
and explore new areas such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, and artificial intelligence for their application to
upstream oil and gas.
Technological advances in information systems, and the proliferation of data gathering fuelled by continually
lower costs of data storage, has resulted in a huge amount of digital data generated every day. The
past decades saw computers play a big role in optimising processes, trimming inventories, and driving
operational efficiencies. These efforts have resulted in creating large pools of data which can be used for
analyses to support decisions. Our aim is to discover best practices, share practical experiences, and discuss
promising ways on moving forward for data supporting decisions in E&P.
Real-time data gathering and intelligent fields providing a continuous stream of production data have
significantly impacted operational decisions in recent years. Databases, data warehousing, and data mining
are going to play an increasingly important role in driving the oil and gas industry to meet the world’s energy
demands and add to global hydrocarbon reserves through discoveries.
The sessions during this workshop will focus on data supporting decisions for prediction of well productivity
and reservoir recovery factors, identifying key drivers for performance, defining best practices in completion
and depletion strategy, and maximising yields for the energy sector. We invite our workshop participants to
present their needs and thoughts on ensuring they have the data needed for making the decisions that move
the E&P industry forward. Our decision makers need the tools to identify and properly risk opportunities
and hence increase chances of successful development, while doing this in a way that minimises damage to
environment, and conducts operations in a socially responsible way.
Session Chairs: Omar O. Akbar, Saudi Aramco; Paul Van den Hoek, Shell
Strategic decision-making for integrated oil and gas companies, optimal depletion of reservoirs, enhancing
ultimate recovery, and adding to reserves require a seamless look across data. Data integration tools play a major
role in gathering scattered information across various domains, and presenting the findings cohesively for decision
makers to arrive at the right conclusions. These technologies deal with seismic subsurface images, drilling
information, production volumes, and planning reservoir depletion.
1330–1500 hours Session 4: From Data Integration to Business Decisions in Petroleum
Reservoirs
Session Chairs: Mohammed Muhareb, Saudi Aramco;
Paul Van den Hoek, Shell
Many business decisions (field development planning, infill drilling, etc.) are based on production
forecasts generated by a reservoir model for different operational scenarios and under different
uncertainties. Significant effort is devoted to make these reservoir models as realistic as possible
via a combination of proper description of the geology, proper understanding of the reservoir,
and overall integration of the measurement data. This process has three, mutually related,
problems to deal with such as:
(1) Results based on data integration will generally be accurate in describing past performance,
but will be (partly) inadequate for predictions, especially when, in the future, streamlines are
changed via infill drilling, producer-injector conversion, or when the recovery scheme is changed
(e.g. moving from IOR to EOR),
(2) Each decision type needs it own specific level of modelling and corresponding level of data
integration (e.g. business planning versus finding infill locations versus reservoir management),
and
(3) There exists no general consensus about how the impact of uncertainties (e.g. using
representative model ensembles) should be “optimally” incorporated into the final business
decision.
This session will address the issues around “translating” the results from data integration
towards business decisions.
Stratagen Engineering; Surendar Sokkanathan, Baker Hughes
This session will help delegates understand data mining concepts, and its role in facilitating
business decisions by introducing knowledge discovery practices within E&P. Data mining offers
the potential to extract useful information from the considerable amount of data being gathered
by energy companies. Data mining based solutions can be used to reduce risks in finding
hydrocarbons, and increase ultimate recovery from hydrocarbon reservoirs. It can be applied to
the analysis and prediction of trends in order to optimise operations, and address several issues
and challenges faced during oil and gas production. During the session, successful case studies
will be presented to demonstrate the power of data mining in enhancing business decisions.
