<strong>Workshop</strong> Description<br />

The right data at the right time is critical for effective decision-making. As a fully integrated E&P company<br />

needs to make decisions at operational, tactical, and strategic levels each <strong>of</strong> this needs a specific dataset. The<br />

type <strong>of</strong> data needed to support an operational decision may vary from data needed to support tactical and<br />

strategic decisions in terms <strong>of</strong> its timing, quality, granularity, aggregation, and presentation. The workshop<br />

will discuss the increasingly critical role played by data in order to support decision makers. Participants will<br />

discuss and share their experiences with the multiple facets <strong>of</strong> data needed to support decision making.<br />

Decision makers in all industries, especially oil and gas, are relying increasingly on data to make decisions.<br />

This reliance is spurring the need to go beyond classical techniques for gathering and analysing statistics,<br />

and explore new areas such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, and artificial intelligence for their application to<br />

upstream oil and gas.<br />

Technological advances in information systems, and the proliferation <strong>of</strong> data gathering fuelled by continually<br />

lower costs <strong>of</strong> data storage, has resulted in a huge amount <strong>of</strong> digital data generated every day. The<br />

past decades saw computers play a big role in optimising processes, trimming inventories, and driving<br />

operational efficiencies. These efforts have resulted in creating large pools <strong>of</strong> data which can be used for<br />

analyses to support decisions. Our aim is to discover best practices, share practical experiences, and discuss<br />

promising ways on moving forward for data supporting decisions in E&P.<br />

Real-time data gathering and intelligent fields providing a continuous stream <strong>of</strong> production data have<br />

significantly impacted operational decisions in recent years. Databases, data warehousing, and data mining<br />

are going to play an increasingly important role in driving the oil and gas industry to meet the world’s energy<br />

demands and add to global hydrocarbon reserves through discoveries.<br />

The sessions during this workshop will focus on data supporting decisions for prediction <strong>of</strong> well productivity<br />

and reservoir recovery factors, identifying key drivers for performance, defining best practices in completion<br />

and depletion strategy, and maximising yields for the energy sector. We invite our workshop participants to<br />

present their needs and thoughts on ensuring they have the data needed for making the decisions that move<br />

the E&P industry forward. Our decision makers need the tools to identify and properly risk opportunities<br />

and hence increase chances <strong>of</strong> successful development, while doing this in a way that minimises damage to<br />

environment, and conducts operations in a socially responsible way.<br />

Reservoirs<br />

Many business decisions (field development planning, infill drilling, etc.) are based on production<br />

forecasts generated by a reservoir model for different operational scenarios and under different<br />

uncertainties. Significant effort is devoted to make these reservoir models as realistic as possible<br />

via a combination <strong>of</strong> proper description <strong>of</strong> the geology, proper understanding <strong>of</strong> the reservoir,<br />

and overall integration <strong>of</strong> the measurement data. This process has three, mutually related,<br />

problems to deal with such as:<br />

(1) Results based on data integration will generally be accurate in describing past performance,<br />

but will be (partly) inadequate for predictions, especially when, in the future, streamlines are<br />

changed via infill drilling, producer-injector conversion, or when the recovery scheme is changed<br />

(e.g. moving from IOR to EOR),<br />

(2) Each decision type needs it own specific level <strong>of</strong> modelling and corresponding level <strong>of</strong> data<br />

integration (e.g. business planning versus finding infill locations versus reservoir management),<br />

and<br />

(3) There exists no general consensus about how the impact <strong>of</strong> uncertainties (e.g. using<br />

representative model ensembles) should be “optimally” incorporated into the final business<br />

decision.<br />

This session will address the issues around “translating” the results from data integration<br />

towards business decisions.<br />

<strong>Workshop</strong> Guidelines<br />

Format<br />

Two and a half (2.5) days <strong>of</strong> informal discussions prompted by<br />

selected keynote presentations and discussions. <strong>Workshop</strong>s<br />

maximise the exchange <strong>of</strong> ideas among attendees and<br />

presenters through brief technical presentations followed by<br />

extended Q&A periods. Focused topics attract an informed<br />

audience eager to discuss issues critical to advancing<br />

both technology and best practices. The majority <strong>of</strong> the<br />

presentations are in the form <strong>of</strong> case studies, highlighting<br />

engineering achievements and lessons learnt. In order to<br />

stimulate frank discussion, no proceedings are published and<br />

the press is not invited to attend.<br />

Breakout Sessions<br />

Attendees will be assigned to discussion groups on a random<br />

basis for the breakout sessions to maximise the opportunity to<br />

interact with other participants.<br />

Documentation<br />

• Proceedings will not be published; therefore, formal<br />

papers and handouts are not expected from speakers.<br />

• Work in progress, new ideas, and interesting projects<br />

are sought.<br />

• Pr<strong>of</strong>essionally-prepared visual aids are not required;<br />

however, PowerPoint presentations are most<br />

commonly used.<br />

• Note-taking by participants is encouraged.<br />

Attendance<br />

Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve<br />

basis. The Steering Committee encourages attendance from<br />

those who can contribute to the workshop most effectively<br />

either in discussions or with posters. A mix <strong>of</strong> attendees in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> geographic origin, companies, and disciplines will be<br />

encouraged.<br />

<strong>Workshop</strong> Deliverables<br />

• The Steering Committee will appoint a “scribe” to record<br />

the discussions and to produce the full workshop report<br />

for SPE.<br />

• This report will be circulated to all attendees as the<br />

workshop deliverable within 4–6 weeks following the<br />

workshop. The copyright <strong>of</strong> the report is with SPE.<br />

• PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted on a<br />

specific SPE URL address after the workshop. Provision<br />

<strong>of</strong> the materials by the speakers will signify their<br />

permission for SPE to do so.<br />

Commercialism<br />

In keeping with workshop objectives and the SPE mission,<br />

commercialism in posters or presentations will not be<br />

permitted. Company logos must be limited to the title slide and<br />

used only to indicate the affiliation <strong>of</strong> the presenter and others<br />

involved in the work.<br />

Attendance Certificate<br />

All attendees will receive an attendance certificate attesting<br />

to their participation in the workshop. This certificate<br />

will be provided in exchange for a completed <strong>Workshop</strong><br />

Continuing Education Units<br />
