Workshop Description
The dynamics of supply and demand in the oil and gas industry are rapidly changing the field of petroleum
economics. It has to evolve fast to adapt to the requirements of this new era. To meet the world’s energy
needs safely, reliably, and affordably, we will need an integrated set of solutions that include expanding all
economic energy sources, improving efficiency, and minimising environmental impact. These solutions must
be supported by trillions of dollars in new energy investment, a long-term focus, and constant technological
innovation at a time when the global financial crisis is continuing. Appropriate use of advanced analytical
methods is required to accurately assess these huge and complex investments.
Petroleum economics is affected by a complicated series of political and economic interactions pertaining
to the oil industry. People who study this subject need to be familiar with not only the supply and demand
factors but also the geopolitical outlook and the history of the oil industry as a whole. Political risks,
inflation, unemployment, misallocation of resources, uncertainty of forecasting models, the dynamics of
renewable energy alternatives, the complexity of unconventional resources, and technology overload; each
play an important role. Do we have the proper models that can enlighten all key organisational activities and
effectively evaluate the economics of oil and gas projects?
The second specialised SPE workshop on petroleum economics continues with some of the themes from
the last event into more focused topics related to challenges faced by the oil and gas industry in the new
economic era. This event will give attendees a chance to discuss the development and issues of new
valuation techniques and look at examples of their usage and application with other active practitioners and
decision makers. The workshop will include sessions on the oil pricing drivers, macroeconomic parameters,
evolution of petroleum contracts, risk management, and some insightful discussions on the economics for
EOR/IOR projects. It will provide ample opportunity to network with fellow peers and exchange ideas on
recent industry trends and challenges.
Workshop Objectives
This workshop aims to bring together a wide industry audience including practitioners of economics,
decision makers, generalists, and experts. It will address proper approaches and concepts that are
implemented in petroleum economics to help develop knowledge and skills in order to assess risks better
and accordingly make optimum decisions.
The workshop will consist of a series of structured half-day sessions and discussions on:
• Macroeconomic and Geopolitical Outlook
• Risk and Uncertainty
• Economic Modelling for Decision Making
• IOR/EOR Economics
• Petroleum Contracts
0900–1030 hours Session 1: Macroeconomic and Geopolitical Outlook
Session Chairs: Khaled Maherzi, ExxonMobil; Naeem Alshehri, Saudi Aramco;
Omair Hameed, Schlumberger
Analysing movement and trends of the global and regional economy will help understand how the economy
operates and make the best decisions in a complex environment. Knowing the key factors influencing current
industry economic conditions is important to forecast supply and demand, and to understand pricing drivers,
cost trends, inflation, and tax. “What gets measured gets managed”, so do we have the proper key performance
indicators? Are the regional trends mimicking the global trends? If not, why? And what are the current challenges
for oil and gas companies in the Middle East?
In addition, this session will highlight some subjects on benchmarking and financing of exploration and production
projects from the perspective of different stakeholders including IOC’s, NOC’s, service companies, and financial
institutions.
Mohamad Atabani, STR
This session will focus on the appropriate application of the economic toolkit to the issue of addressing risk
and uncertainty. The session will include short presentations on key aspects of the topic. There is a wide range
of increasingly sophisticated risk modelling approaches available to practitioners, from simple deterministic
and scenario methods through decision based to fully stochastic and options based approaches. However, not
all analytical situations require the same sophistication of approach and we will discuss the applicability and
suitability of the various methods available in the context of different modelling situations and where practical the
commercial tools and associated methodologies that are used in the industry to assess and quantify risk.
Session Chairs: Hayder Obead Al-Moallem, ADCO;
Ramin Lakani, Gaffney, Cline & Associates; Sarika Varma, Heriot-Watt University
With the ever increasing business complexity in the oil and gas industry, advanced economic modelling techniques
are applied to analyse some of the largest capital investment projects by assessing risks and uncertainties, which
enable us to improve decision making.
In this dynamic environment, we seek to provide significant value to clients and stakeholders, host governments or
shareholders, by improving their responsiveness, agility, and reliability using decision support systems and tools.
This session will address a wide range of issues related to both deterministic and probabilistic methods as applied
to investment decision making, underlining cost, project phasing, and uncertainty variables.

0800–0930 hours Session 4: IOR/EOR Economics
Session Chairs: Ali Al-Sumaiti, Petroleum Institute;
Ibtisam Riyami, Petroleum Development Oman;
Sohan Singh, Schlumberger
This session will not only discuss the economic challenges of IOR and EOR projects, but also
present case studies from the Middle East on how to overcome these challenges.
Many countries and oil companies have set high production targets to meet the world’s
steadily increasing demand for oil. However, with mega field discoveries becoming rare and
expensive alternative energy resources, it becomes critical to extend the life of the current
reservoirs through IOR and EOR methods. Besides the technical challenges to implement
such projects, economic challenges will always constitute to be a major hurdle to achieve
this demand.
0930–1050 hours Coffee Break
1050–1230 hours Panel Discussion and Q&A
1230–1330 hours Luncheon
1330–1500 hours Session 5: Petroleum Contracts
Session Chairs: Kenneth Henriks, Maersk Oil; Rafael Duque, Dana Gas;
Sirak Kifle, Gaffney, Cline & Associates
This session will discuss international petroleum contracts covering current trends and
developments globally, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions.
Topics related to the two main contract types—royalty, tax and contractual systems, with
their various forms, will be covered. In addition, some of the major service contracts (e.g.
Iraq) will be compared with the more traditional contracts. Terms that are common to most
contract types such as, work programme, measurement and valuation of hydrocarbons,
determination of OPEX, CAPEX, taxes in lieu, cost uplift, ring fencing, risk identification
and allocation, general obligations of the parties, contractual liabilities and indemnities,
and jurisdictional issues will be discussed. Comparative analysis between various forms of
contracts such as royalty, tax, PSCs, and service contracts will be presented and illustrated
through case studies. This analysis will try to show the dynamics of these contracts as far
as “Government Take” versus “Contractor Take”; as it is essential to see these contracts
from both sides of the equation. This session will explore worldwide petroleum contract
arrangements, developments, trends, lessons learnt, and will enable participants to compare
and benchmark various contract forms in different regions/countries; from both the IOC and
NOC perspective.
