SNOW SCULPTURE CONTEST—BY LESLIE GIBSON
There was a chilling competition last
week during the 2011 Mardi Gras
celebration at the lifts. Typically the
annual snow sculpture competition
was held during Winter Carnival week
but this winter it was just too frigid with
the unpleasantly cold 40 below temperatures.
Each lift crew was a team...
during days off and spare time teams
came up with several great masterpieces for this
years’ contest. The judges scored the following categories
to determine the top three sculptures:
- originality / adherence to theme
- quality of the sculpture / craftsmanship
- operator performance and appearance
- appearance of the maze and lift area
First place went to Elkhead for “The Saints Truck
and Mardi Gras Mask” by Ben Biggi, Paul
Peak Sheet 8
Christian, Alana Gaskell, Norm Look and Santi
Pintos. The Elkhead crew used a solid piece of ice
from the roof of the lift house for the windshield.
They made the sculpture big enough to fill the entire maze area and their attention
to detail was impeccable... They even had tread on the tires. The truck and float had
clean lines, correct proportions and overall was a fantastic piece!
Second prize was awarded to Burgess Creek for “Baby Cake”. The BC crew,
Tim Davidson, Nick Hebel, Michael Logunetz, Robert Mosher and Steven Truslow
crafted a snowy version of a king cake. Most skiers probably had to take a second
look at the baby inside... it was amazingly realistic... it even moved.
Third prize went to Bar UE for “Sea Creatures”. The enthusiasm of this crew was
truly contagious. Keegan Baird, Robert Burgoon, Adam Heskett, Matt Martin
and Ryan Snodgrass all worked on a variety of sea creatures to show off during
the contest. The attitude and lift area at Bar UE was impressive. They were very
innovative when building the creatures... They even made a sunshade
to protect them from the sun out of bamboo and trash bags.
All of the entries in this year’s Snow Sculpture contest were remarkable.
Thank you to the Lift Operations team for the excellent sculptures,
season, and attitude... GREAT JOB!
Morning Star Development, a non-profit organization based in Colorado Springs, has partnered with the Steamboat Ski &
Resort Corporation to bring warm winter clothing to families in rural Afghanistan. The climate in the capital city of Kabul is
similar to Denver and the winters can be very harsh. The donated clothing was made available through a
program that recycles uniforms of resort employees. These distributions are occurring at Morning Star’s Community Centers
located throughout rural Afghanistan and other locations focusing on the rural poor and orphans.
The uniforms donated by Steamboat are part of 100,000 pounds of clothing and supplies
that came from Colorado enterprises and were airlifted out of Buckley Air Force Base in
Denver. USAid and several U.S. military organizations have provided logistical assistance as
these supplies were flown to Germany and then on to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.
The supplies include: 10,000 winter coats; 8,000 shoes; 5,000 children’s toys; 2,500 pieces
of sports equipment; 23 irrigation systems and seeds for 2,600 farmers; 4,000 first-aid kits,
25 hospital kits and 150 walkers. This distribution is valued at well over $4 million dollars
and all items were donated.
“We were honored to be selected as the implementing partner on the ground in Afghanistan
for this distribution. The people receiving the warm winter clothes are so grateful. They are
also inquisitive, wondering who are these people who care for us that we do not know?
Everyone said to say thank you! ”, commented the Morning Star Staff.
”The Steamboat community is known for its western hospitality, which spreads far beyond the
ski area boundaries,” says Audrey Williams, director of facilities of Steamboat Ski Resort and Corporation. “We are thrilled
to participate in programs that reuse our uniforms to provide warmth for children and families living in Afghanistan’s similar
climate.”
The 2010/2011 Steamboat SlopeWise Safety Poster Contest winners were recently
announced. “The primary goal of the poster contest is to generate awareness
of skiing and riding in a safe manner and the appropriate on-hill behavior
while making the learning process fun for kids,” said John Kohnke, patrol director
for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation.
Sarah Heineke from Strawberry Park Elementary received the overall award from
all Yampa Valley school entries as well as from her school. Clinton Bradt, Marjorie
Hellyer, Eric Casey, Grace Olinger, McKinley Mahlbauer and Angelica Torres took
top billing at their respective schools. A 2011/12 Steamboat child season pass
along with $50 cash will go to Heineke. Each 1st place winner will receive $50
cash; 2nd place winner a $25 Steamboat gift certificate and 3rd place a pizza pack.
“The response over the past decade has grown steadily with this year experiencing the best participation in the history of
the program, with more than 300 posters submitted and nearly 1,500 children learning about on-mountain safety,” said
Michele Baxter, Steamboat Patroller. “The sheer volume of posters submitted shows the impact this program is having on
children across the Yampa Valley and the ability to keep on-mountain safety fun.”
Re- Top notch Service: My son's (3) 12, 10, 16 all had a very good experience
with Brandon V ~ he was very professional, friendly and
knowledgeable. He was able to relate to the age differences and accommodate
each of their needs all four days. I would refer and request his service
next year. He has a calm demeanor which makes it a lot easier to learn. Brandon
provides a solid lesson plan. I highly recommend him for private lessons.
Hi, Tuesday I had the best day of ski school I have ever had in my six years of coming
to Steamboat. Every time we come to Steamboat I do Ski school at least two to
three times. Tuesday, Christian Keller taught me and another girl in a level eight
class. He had the greatest ways of explaining things to me. Most other instructors
I have had only gave vague explanations of how to do things. Christian would show
us how to do things and always told us if we did something wrong and made us go
over it again until we did it correctly. He was the best teacher I have ever had in
the ski school. Please, forward this on to the Steamboat ski school offices. Thank
you, Chase, age 12
