breathing. So, what are some other things to consider? 

You’ll want to weigh a variety of factors when selecting 

a regulator, such as your intended diving environment, 

frequency of use, requested comfort, and your price range. 

Whichever factors are most important to you will guide your 

choice. 

Where do you plan to dive the most? Will you be diving in cold 

water where a metal second stage is of extra importance? 

Maybe you also dream of travelling frequently to warm 

and exotic destinations, and wish to keep the weight and 

size of the regulator to a minimum. If you think it will be a 

combination, the Proton 42 Metal (or the She Dives version) 

would be an excellent choice. 

How often will you be diving? People who dive very frequently 

often choose a regulator with a long-term track record of

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR REGULATOR

TRI-MATERIAL VALVE 

Patented technology, conceived and created to 

optimize performance, safety, and reliability. 

This brass valve is covered with a hard PU then 

the head is layered molecularly with a soft PU. 

Tri-material (brass, soft polyurethane, and 

“heavy duty” polyurethane) reaches a new level 

of durability. 

ALL METAL TECHNOLOGY 

Metal second stages have superior performance 

than plastic second stages, especially in cold 

water, thanks to the high thermal conductivity 

that limits the freezing effect. Additional benefits 

are the improved durability, the longer working 

life and the less dry mouth breathing. 

DFC - DYNAMIC FLOW CONTROL 

DFC system minimizes the intermediate pressure 

drop during inhalation, making it possible to use a 

simpler and more reliable second stage. Any type 

of manual adjustment is not necessary, thanks 

to the consistency derived from first stages 

that guarantees a stable flow of air, even under 

extreme conditions. 

VAD - VORTEX ASSISTED DESIGN 

All Mares second stages offer the unique patented 

VAD system. The air bypass tube conveys air to the 

mouthpiece creating a swirling vortex with a low 

pressure area in center that keeps the diaphragm 

down during inhalation, for very sensitive and 

easy breathing at all depths. 

MESH-GRID 

The patented mesh design of the second stage 

cover reduces the pressure of water flowing 

onto the second stage diaphragm and minimizes 

free-flow. Even in strong currents it eliminates 

the need for a knob to ‘de-tune’ your air delivery 

system to stop free flowing: Advanced technology 

through basic physics. 

EXTREME COLD WATER 

Regulators conceived to guarantee unbeatable 

performance and reliability in extremely cold 

water, even ice diving: the CWD kit is equipped 

on the first stage and the All Metal second stage 

is entirely coated with fluoropolymer resin finish, 

even on all key components. 

NTT - NANO THERMOCONDUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY 

A new exclusive patented technopolymer charged, 

through nanotechnology, with materials featuring 

thermo-conductive properties. Second stages 

manufactured in NTT are lightweight in mass like 

a plastic housing, while granting performance 

similar to metal regulators. 

FLUID DYNAMIC DEFLECTOR 

This innovative deflector, developed after in-depth 

study and tests of fluid dynamics, is engineered to 

receive and properly direct the airflow from the 

by-pass tube to the mouthpiece. Combined with 

the VAD it delivers a very natural and effortless 

breathing. 

NBS - NATURAL BREATHING SYSTEM 

A special corrosion resistant spiral-shaped insert 

in the by-pass tube automatically adjusts for 

changing demands to airflow making breathing 

more natural in any conditions. 

INPP 100 MT CERTIFICATION 

The Notified Body INPP of Marseilles performs 

the strictest tests on regulators to certify they are 

compliant with the European Regulation EN250, 

granting the best and safest performance with 

binary (Heliox) and tertiary (Trimix) mixtures to a 

depths of 100 meters.

instrument choice by almost all divers. Below are some 

considerations to support you in choosing the product that 

is right for you. 

Configurations: wrist units, such as Nemo Wide, Puck or M2, 

are good choices if the thought of checking your computer 

should be as easy as checking the time of day on your wrist. 

If you then want to wear your computer at work or out for 

dinner, a stylish watch-computer like Nemo Excel or Nemo 

Sport is the right choice. If your style is more oriented to 

keeping everything together, the console Mission Puck 2 or 

3 is the suggested purchase. 

Air-integrated or non air-integrated: both provide you with 

the same type of depth and time information. Air-integrated 

versions go one step further by giving you a digital readout 

of air pressure. Nemo Air constantly calculates also your 

air consumption and gives a constant feedback of your 

status during the dive. 

Mares computers feature high contrast displays for easy 

reading. However, if you need more, Nemo Wide and Nemo Air 

displays show the clearest digits at the greatest viewing angle. 

You may want to easily change the battery yourself with the 

use of common batteries you can buy in most stores. In this

Mares computers provide specialized program functions 

dedicated to the needs of specific divers: Air and Nitrox

hoosing a BC is simplified by classifying your 

options into different categories: jacket style vs. 

back inflation, weight integrated vs. non- weight 

integrated and type of inflation system. There are also BCs 

designed especially for women and some that simplify 

travel because of their light weight and ease of packing. 

Jacket style aficionados cite the ‘armchair style comfort’ 

they feel while upright on the surface and appreciate having 

more pockets than on a back inflation BC. On the other 

side, divers dedicated to back inflation love the freedom 

of movement provided by having the air cell completely 

behind vs. around their torso. 

On top of the two categories above, Mares Dragon family 

(Dragon, Dragon AT and Kaila for women) incorporates a 

‘dragon’ air cell that inflates partly in the rear for freedom 

of movement, yet retains the comfort of jacket-style on the 

surface. 

Nearly all modern BCs are weight-integrated, eliminating 

the need for a separate weight belt. Weight release pockets 

such as the Mares MRS Plus system are versatile because 

they can be used with either hard or soft weights. Even 

better, they are released with a simple, single motion. 

Instead of the traditional ‘Ergo’ inflator, some Mares 

models (Dragon AT, Vector 1000 AT and Origin Sport AT)

he thickness or type of the suit you choose will 

depend on the water temperature and the individual, 

some people become colder than others, or often 

times women will become colder than men. There is no 

single piece suit or thickness that can transcend every 

water condition. 

Mares offers a full line to cover all conditions possible 

for your ultimate comfort while diving. For colder waters, 

a thicker full wetsuit 5mm and up will provide thermal 

insulation and greater body surface coverage. Adding 

layers such as a hooded vest or core warmer will further 

enhance diving enjoyment when temperatures dip. When 

seasons change and temperatures rise you can choose to 

eliminate some layers. Warmer waters require less thermal 

protection and thinner neoprene material like 3 or 1.5mm 

suit. Even in warmer waters 24 °C or 75 °F water being 

one of the best conductors of heat, a diver would become 

chilled with no exposure suit. 

Fit is a key feature when choosing a wetsuit. Choose a suit that 

fits snugly with enough flexibility to allow ease of movement 

in the water without being restrictive or too tight. The Mares 

suit line includes the Trilastic System: a combination of 

materials of varying thicknesses for a comfortable fit and 

increased durability in all diving conditions. 

Another option for exposure protection is to opt for a 

Drysuit. Drysuits are ideal in the coldest water or for 

people who chill easily by keeping you totally dry. What you 

wear underneath is what keeps you warm. Mares thermal 

comfort underwear suits come in a variety of thicknesses 

for various temperatures to keep you perfectly comfortable 

throughout your cold dives or multiple dives.

DYNA WAVE NEOPRENE 

Patented, high density neoprene by Mobby’s. 

Compression is accomplished during the 

manufacturing process as opposed to physically 

crushing. Unique is its ability to remain 

unchanged under continuous compression/ 

expansion stresses. Dyna Wave neoprene is 5% 

denser, retains flexibility, and provides insulation 

equivalent to 7 mm. 

CAP SYSTEM 

Bio-Ceramic material is infused with inorganic 

and oxidized metals which emit FIR rays to warm 

the body surface. Aluminum compound laminated 

to durable Nylon to create the airtight integrity 

of the shell. The use of aluminum assists in 

reducing mildew and odors caused by biological 

growth while stored.

for when it’s time to choose a fin. Mares makes a 

wide variety of fins to meet the needs of every diver and 

snorkeler. It is important to choose the correct fin to match 

your leg strength, and kicking style. Understanding the 

different technologies will enable you to make an informed 

choice that matches your style. Mares has researched and 

has continued to revolutionize the design and manufacturing 

of fins to optimize the flow of water off the blade giving you 

the maximum amount of thrust with low effort. 

The main categories of fins are Full foot, and Open heel. 

Full foot fins are great for traveling as they are typically 

lighter in weight, less bulky, and often the preferred style 

when diving in warm water areas. Open heel requires the 

use of a bootie. Mares anatomic open heel foot pocket is 

designed to perfectly accommodate dive boots with a sole. 

With the straps comfortably tightened, your foot should fit 

snugly into the pocket with no gaping around the top of your 

foot, and the bottom portion should reach your heel, this 

ensures maximum kicking efficiency. 

In terms of performance, if you’re more advanced or have 

very strong legs, a powerful paddle fin will offer you the 

greatest thrust and ability to vary your kicks. Channel Thrust 

technology is the best and will optimize the power and 

efficiency in every kick, in all conditions. The Superchannel 

technology further emphasizes this benefit. 

Fins with OPB will provide a comparatively easier kick 

without compromising any power: ideal for women, youths,

OPB - OPTIMIZED PIVOTING BLADE 

A llows the blade to assume an optimal angle. 

Traditional fins produce lower levels of thrust 

at different points in the kicking cycle. OPB 

produces optimal thrust during every phase of 

the cycle, which minimizes fatigue and produces

irst and foremost, a mask needs to be comfortable. 

Really the true test if a mask fits well for you is to 

actually jump in the water with it. However, there are 

some tests out of the water that can direct you to a mask 

that works for you. 

Suction test, on standard silicone masks without the strap 

in place ideally you should place the mask on your face, 

press, and inhale slightly in order to create a suction. With a 

LiquidSkin mask, this test may not be the best indication of 

fit because the skirt is so flexible and molds to the contours 

of your face. The following checks would be a better 

indication of fit on the LiquidSkin. 

Next is to check the inside gasket seal, there should be no 

visible gaping and ideally the seal should not be too close 

to the outside corners of your eyes or crossing over your 

eyebrows. The skirt should not go back to your hairline 

either. Make sure all hair is moved away from the sealing 

area of the skirt as this can cause leaking. Use a mirror to 

check. 

Once you have the mask in place take a glance around. 

Your vision should be good. Sometimes with dual lens 

masks, depending on the person’s eye position, the center 

divide piece could be obstructing your vision. Or, if it is not 

comfortable on the bridge of your nose, you should consider 

a single lens mask.

THE NEW ERA IN MASK COMFORT 

The most important innovation since the introduction of 

silicone masks. Bi-Silicone Technology. In all of the current 

masks on the market, the skirt is made of rubber, silicone, 

or another medium-hard elastomer. All of today’s masks 

are a compromise, dictated by the need of the frame 

support structure for a relatively hard material in the area

construction wheels. With a diameter of 9 cm and 

a with a tire tread 3cm wide, they can maneuver
