Active Youth Newsletter, Term 2 2009
While there is no golden rule to get young people active on a regular basis, there are many contributing factors within a
community, school or a family that can help. One such element is the use of successful role models for young people.
Recently, Active Schools have arranged local sporting athletes to visit classrooms throughout Southland to share the
message about the benefits of being active, the importance of goal setting and enjoying the outdoors.
Local athletes have included Sid Cumming, NZ Age Group Champion Triathlete; Jessica Hamill, NZ Paralympian; and
Hayden Strong, 800m and Cross Country winner at Southland Primary School Champs. It should also be noted that one
Active School, Invercargill Middle School, used the most meaningful role models young people could have at a recent ‘Have
a Go’ evening – their own family and friends. It was a treat to see families together, active, happy and helping each other.
Well done Middle School.
Another element that promotes regular physical activity is what could be loosely termed opportunity. Young people in
schools need to have equity in accessing recreation and sporting equipment. This equipment needs to be suitable to the
needs and interests of kids. For example younger children and those with lesser locomotor abilities need larger, softer
‘pimply’ balls to play with.
As a facilitator, I have been working alongside our Active Schools to assess schools sporting equipment, opportunities to use
that equipment and also development of skills in the playground so that young people can learn games, activities and playing
etiquette. We have been looking at aspects such as upskilling children to take leadership roles through Physical Activity
Leader workshops. We have been looking at the halls, walls and ‘hard’ play areas of the school, are they bright and
attractive? And of course adventure playgrounds, monkey bars, swings and slides although expensive still remain as
resources of higher use in any school playground.
Eastern Southland School Holiday Programme
40 children from the Eastern Southland region recently took part in a
brilliant school holiday programme. The programme which was held
over five days included a variety of activities that kept the children
mentally and physically active.
The first day of the programme involved a trip to Invercargill where the
trusty leaders took the children whizzing around the mountain bike
tracks at Sandy Point. This was followed by a visit to Queens Park and
then to 10 Pin Bowling. The programme was located in Mataura for
the next day where children tried out their Dancing with the Stars skills
during a Rock ‘n Roll session. The Invercargill Rock ‘n Roll Club
brought along a group of children to do some wonderful
demonstrations and teach the group some moves. The remaining
three days were held in Gore where children were lucky enough to
have a go at a number of sports including rugby league with the Southland District Rugby League Development Officer;
squash with the Junior Development Officer, table tennis, ice skating and swimming. They also enjoyed some creative time
doing arts and crafts and creating healthy food treats. Then they were challenged to work as a team with some special
games taken by the Gore Youth Worker.
The highlight for many of the children was a taste of horse riding at Riding for Disabled in Gore. The children were grinning
from ear to ear as they got to know the horses and even taking on the obstacle courses.
Thank you to all the leaders, tutors and sports development officers who helped to make the school holiday programme a
success. Sport Southland holds a five day school holiday programme in Eastern Southland every school holidays, please
contact Susie on 03 208 3846 for more information.
Active Families
Active Families has been action packed in term 1 with not only the Invercargill programme starting up but also with the
beginning of the Active Families Ohai programme. The Ohai group have been learning about basketball, soccer and healthy
ideas for school lunches so far. Sessions for term 2 include low cost activity ideas for the home, takeaways tips and
alternatives to takeaways and swimming. Active Families Ohai meets once a month at the Te Oruanui Marae. We are keen
to have more families join who are interested in becoming more active and learning about making better food choices.
Active Families Ohai is fully funded making it free for participants
Active Families Invercargill had a fun packed term 1 with an even bigger and brighter term 2 planned. Highlights from term 1
include a cycling session with Anja from Cycling Southland, a big scavenger hunt around Stadium Southland and ILT
Velodrome, talking about breakfasts, and making yummy smoothies and playing badminton. In term 2 sessions include
yoga, swimming, glow in the dark golf and school lunches.
If you have a child, or know of a child aged 5-12 years who would
benefit from positive physical activity experiences and advice on
better nutrition, please refer them to Active Families. We are always
eager to have more families on board. The programme is a rolling
12 month programme that follows the school term. Families can
start at any time and it is fully funded making it free to participants.
