Expand Your Thought Process
 Thought Provoking
 Shatter Your Comfort Zone
 Expand Your Thinking
 Imagine Your Company’s Future World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL9Wu2kWwSY
So what does it mean for you and your company?
10

The Times They Are A Changin’
Can You Change With Them?
…. Or Fade Into Extinction
11

In The News …
California’s December jobless rate was 12.5% second only to Nevada
and worse than Michigan, which is now No. 3 (LA Times, Jan 2011)
A recent survey illustrates increased hiring and a shortage of qualified
applicants for manufacturing and distribution companies (McGladrey National
Survey, Q3 2010)
… employers complain that they cannot fill their openings. Plenty of
people are applying for the jobs. The problem, the companies say, is
a mismatch between the kind of skilled workers needed and the ranks
of the unemployed. (New York Times, July 2010)
California is grappling with one of the most troubling contradictions of
the new economy: Even as it has one of the nation's highest
unemployment rates, it has thousands of job openings due to a
mismatch in openings and worker skills. (Washington Post, February 2011)
12

Per a Recent SHRM Survey
HR Professionals Believe:
It will be extremely likely or somewhat likely to experience an
increase in voluntary turnover once the job market improves
71% in large organizations of >500 employees
53% in medium organizations of 100 to 499 employees
 41% in small organizations < 100 employees)
Employees Say:
The three top reasons they would begin searching for a new job:
53 percent seek better compensation and benefits
35 percent cited dissatisfaction with potential career
development
32 percent said they were ready for a new experience
So what’s an executive to do?
13

Follow … The New Recruiting Paradigm?
The Process:
Hint: It’s barely about recruiting at all
Simply put, the new recruiting paradigm is …
GROW YOUR OWN
Identify your best performing lower skilled employees (BPEs)
 Longer term at the company
Demonstrated strong work ethic and cultural fit
Demonstrated desire for company / personal success
Partner with SMEs or skill specific training organizations
Develop them into the higher skilled employees your business
needs to grow and prosper
14

Benefits for Your Company
Reduce turnover by addressing all of the three top reasons
employees leave
You jump-start their career growth by investing in training that
allows them to do higher skilled work (Reason #2)
Once the training is completed, they’re onto a new career
experience (Reason #3)
The you recognize their increased contribution to the company’s
success with an appropriate pay increase (Reason #1) thus closing
the loop on the top three reasons your employees start looking for a
job elsewhere
You fill a difficult-to-hire opening and can backfill the vacated
position with external recruiting of easier-to-hire, lower skilled
candidates
Your company earns the reputation of being “the” place where
employees can grow and all of your recruiting becomes easier
15

A Little Help From the SCV EZ
Can You Spell EZ (Enterprise Zone)?
Qualified employee new-hires can “earn” your
company up to $37,440 of tax credits over five years
Year 1 12,480
Year 2 9,984
Year 4 4,992
Year 5 2,496
Total 37,440
* Assumes new hire wage rate of $12.00 per hour
16

But Wait ... There’s More
During February, COC received $1,077,000 in grants
and awards focused on delivering employee / small
business development programs
Cash
First year cash flows: Cost Flow
