PAULINIANS JOIN KA-TALK YOUTH FORUM
Contributed by Nardine Aislinn Marie Agodon
Secretary ISMS
The 46 th KA-TALK Youth Forum’s theme was
“Panata ko...maglingkod sa bayan ng Diyos.” It was a
half day forum participated in by the youth from all over
Manila. The forum focused on discussing what the youth
can do in order to achieve social transformation. Ms.
Geoanna Hernandez, Executive Secretary of Sec. Dinky
Soliman of the Department of Social Welfare and
Development, gave a talk that challenged the participants
to contribute to social transformation and to be a “hero of
today’s generation.”
The Archdiocesan Commission on Youth held the 46 th KA-TALK
Youth Forum on 12 November 2011 in the Paco Catholic School
Auditorium.
St. Paul University Manila was very privileged to be
invited to the said forum. A number of students attended the
forum, together with Ms. Maribel Corcolla, Head, Student Affairs
and Program Committee Member of the Ka-Talk Forum #46.
Throughout the forum, animation dances and acquaintance
activity were led by SPU Manila’s Paulinian Liturgical Animators and
some student leaders from Paulinian Peace Builders. An
intermission song number was rendered by Kimberly Longkino,
student from SPU Manila College of Music and the Performing Arts.
After the talk, there was a reflection and group sharing. In the
sharing, participants expressed clearly their simple and concrete ways of
being a “new hero” and their commitment as student servant leaders.
As the forum reached its end, representatives from different sectors
of the Commission on Youth made a commitment to help the Church and
the nation in the fulfilment of Social Transformation. Alyssa Ochoa and
Joriel Catura led the Ritual of Commitment and the prayer of the youth.
After the ritual, the Young Peace-makers on Campus Batch 12 rendered a song number
entitled “Thank you” dedicated to His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. It was an act of
gratitude to the Cardinal, as he ends his assignment as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila,
for supporting the KA-TALK Youth Forum throughout his term. If not because of him, Ka-talk
would not have materialized.
The activity ended with a community singing of “Pananagutan.” The forum was hosted by
Aislinn Agodon, Joriel Catura, and Roxanne Urquico of St. Paul University Manila and Vianne
Madarag of Adamson University.
6 TH Father Louis Chauvet Cup Opens
Contributed by Rica Angeles
The Fr. Louis Chauvet Cup (FLCC) also known as PAULakasan
is a most awaited event in St. Paul University Manila, wherein
the students are able to show their skills in different sports.
The Father Louis Chauvet Cup (FLCC) is a major
activity that aims to actualize the commitment of the Student
Services Division to promote physical wellness through sports
and other recreational activities. This sports tournament is in
honor of Fr. Louis Chauvet, founder of the SPC Congregation
and model of human wellness.
The FLCC this year will include both indoor and
outdoor games. It will be participated in by students from
different colleges who will play in the different categories:
basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, chess, darts,
swimming, bowling, and billiards.
The FLCC aims to:
• Create an atmosphere of unity, camaraderie, and sportsmanship among the students,
faculty and staff;
• Develop among student leaders a sense of responsibility by delegating tasks and
duties that are assigned to them;
• Identify student athletes who have the potential to compete in interscholastic
tournaments, and
• Inculcate the values of community through sports.
On 18 November 2011, the 6 th FLCC, which was spearheaded by the Paulinian Student
Government, was officially opened. All colleges participated in their sports uniforms. Different
colors for the different colleges made the activity a “battle of colors.”
The opening ceremony started with a simple parade of players. It was followed by an
opening prayer led by Ms. Roxanne Urquico from the College of Arts and Sciences Council, after
which, Sr. Lilia Thérèse Tolentino, SPC, SPU Manila President, gave her opening and inspirational
message.
There was a symbolic passing and lighting of the torch led by each team captain. Each
captain carried the light that was passed on to the others, and together they lighted the center
fire as the official light of the sports event. Sr. Lilia then officially declared the opening of the
PAULakasan 2011.
Before the start of the games, Ms. Rica Angeles led the
Oath of Sportsmanship of the players.
Then, Sr. Lilia did the symbolic toss to start the
basketball game.
After the program, the first basketball and volleyball
games were played. It was the College of Arts and
Sciences which competed with the College of Nursing and
Allied Health Sciences.
Succeeding games will be held on Friday and
Saturday afternoons.
SPU MANILA STUDENTS JOIN
CBCP YEAR OF THE YOUTH CELEBRATIONS
Contributed by Maribel Corcolla
2011 was declared by the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines as the Year of the Youth,
which coincides with the World Youth Day. Other than the World Youth Day Local Celebration,
there were two other big events related to the Year of the Youth which was participated in by St.
Paul University Manila:
• National Youth Day in Don Bosco College Makati ; and
• Christmas Carol Festival in Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
OPENING CEREMONY OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH DAY
On 14-18 November 2011, the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on
Youth (ECY) through the Federation of National Youth
Organizations (FNYO), hosted the National Youth Day
Celebration 2011 in Don Bosco College Makati. During the
opening ceremony, the Paulinian Dance Troupe performed a
dance number entitled “Song of the Cross” (photo left).
The event was participated in by thousands of delegates
from all over the Philippines.
KAROLING NG KABATAANG PINOY
On 10 December 2011, the Ministry on Campus of the Archdiocesan Commission on Youth,
Archdiocese of Manila, in partnership with the Jesuit Communications, hosted a Christmas Carol
Festival in Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Cubao. The festival, entitled “Namamasko po: Karoling ng
Kabataang Pinoy,” was a culminating activity of the Church for its celebration of the CBCP–Year
of the Youth.
The festival was participated in by choral groups from different colleges, universities, and
parishes, with special participation of some ABS-CBN artists, such as Yeng Constantino, Markki
Stroem, and Jovit Baldovino.
It was a big break for Paulinian students to perform for the first time in the Smart-Araneta
Coliseum. There were almost 50 students from St. Paul university Manila, joined by 15 students
from St. Paul Quezon City who rendered two dances numbers entitled, “Your Love is beautiful”
and “Promises.”
It was a gift to St. Paul University students, that in the year of the school’s centennial
celebration, they were given the opportunity to share their charism by showcasing their talents
and giftedness in the form of acting, dancing and singing. This only proves that Paulinians are
not only concerned with academic excellence but are “all to all” in service to the Church and the
nation.
May the Love of Christ continue to urge us on… Kudos Paulinians!
SMI-IC HOSTS STUDENT-TEACHER CONGRESS
ON CYBER ETHICS AND SOCIAL MEDIA
The Internet and social media are an essential part of our
everyday lives. However useful as they are, social media
also pose a threat to our society, values, and security.
In order to address this issue, the South Manila
Inter-Institutional Consortium Student Affairs Committee,
spearheaded by Ms. Maribel Corcolla, SMIIC SAO Chair,
hosted the Student-Teacher Congress on Social Media and
Cyber-Ethics at Sr. Kuniberta Hall, St. Scholastica’s College
on 23 November 2011.
There were around 500 student leaders and student affairs practitioners/moderators from
SMI-IC member schools who attended the said event.
The congress was formally opened with an opening prayer led by Roxanne Urquico,
student leader of St. Paul University Manila. Then, Mrs. Remedios Ching, Dean of College, St.
Scholastica’s College welcomed the participants on behalf of Sr. Mary Thomas Prado, OSB,
President of St. Scholastica’s College. This was followed by the opening remarks of Sr. Lilia
Thérèse L. Tolentino, SPC, President of St. Paul University Manila and of the South Manila Inter-
Institutional Consortium (SMI-IC).
CYBER WELLNESS
Fr. Stephen also shared the five dangers in the Internet
to make the participants more aware of the threats that they
can encounter. In order to protect their privacy and security, Fr.
Stephen also gave tips to counteract the threats:
TIP 01: Review your security, account and privacy settings.
Account Hijacking: Spam, phishing, malware, etc.
Tip 02: Pornography: Use safe search settings and security
plug-ins.
The first part of the Congress was the talk on Cyber
Wellness by Fr. Stephen Cuyos, MSC to help the
participants become more aware on how to use the
Internet and social media appropriately and efficiently. He
started the talk with giving the participants a “live show”
and a “quick tour” of the world wide web and showing them
sites that could be of help in their studies and can broaden
their knowledge.
Sites like slideshare, googletranslate, qwiki,
pimpampum. net.bookr, pimpampum.net.bookr.bubblr,
khanacademy, youtube education, quizlet, and neok12
were shared with the participants.
TIP 03: Block cyberbullies. Report cyberbullies. Get help from adults. Only “friend” people you
have met in real life.
TIP 04: Limit the amount of personal information shared.
Fr. Stephen highlighted that Internet remembers everything you do on it.
every webpage you visit.
Internet can track
THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK
The second part of the Congress was the talk of
Ms. Kara David of the GMA Channel 7 News and
Current Affairs.
“Think before you click” was
originally a campaign of GMA-7 network, which
aims to help us become aware and responsible in
using social media.
Ms. David shared with the participants of the
congress her own experiences in social media. She shared
how social media, particularly Facebook, was able to help
Lola Aurelia in finding her husband, Lolo Luis. Lola
Aurelia’s story became viral after Reddie Js posted her
picture on Facebook showing her with a poster at her front
and back. The poster contained Lolo’s picture. After two
weeks of Lola’s walking the streets, searching for her
husband, with the help of FB netizens and media, Lolo Luis
was finally found. When asked why she did not just put her
poster on posts and walls, Lola answered: “Ako nakakapaglakad, ang poste hindi.” This
particular experience pointed out to the participants that social media can be a wonderful thing,
when used properly.
However, everything has two sides. If not used properly, social media could also be ugly.
To further prove her point, Ms. Kara shared how she was bullied through Twitter just because of
a single post. Her sharing ended with a challenge that just as you have to think before you click,
you also have to remember that not everything that you post will click.
OPEN FORUM
The morning sessions were more enriched by the open forum where most of the
participants asked questions to clarify some issues concerning them and the use of social media.
Some spoke up and expressed their appreciation to the
speakers.
WORKSHOP
In the afternoon, student representatives were left in the
hall for the workshop.
Ms. Corcolla facilitated a
workshop called “My face book,” which aimed to gather
insights/learning and to challenge the students to promote
cyber wellness in their respective schools. Each student was
asked to draw a Facebook profile where they would place all
their answers to the reflection questions given to them.
There was a separate
sharing for the Student
Affairs Practitioners. In the
sharing, everyone affirmed
the value of cyber wellness and agreed that the congress
became an eye opener to all especially on the dangers that
social media may bring to the lives of their users.
The Congress ended at four thirty in the afternoon with
closing remarks delivered by Ms. Maribel Corcolla, Chair, SMI-IC SAO Committee.
