Personal protective equipment (PPE )<br />
• boiler suit (other types of coveralls may be necessary)<br />
• safety helmets<br />
• boots or other safety footwear<br />
• goggles or other eye protection<br />
• gloves (suitable for the work)<br />
• harness (to aid in emergency recovery)<br />
• the work may require dust masks or other respiratory protection<br />
• welding and other types of work may require specialist equipment such as aprons, full face<br />
masks, etc.<br />

• entry log (recording personnel entering and leaving the space)<br />
• warning signage<br />
• material safety data sheets for any chemicals used<br />
Communications<br />
• between the bridge and the attendant at the entrance to the space<br />
• between the attendant at the entrance of the space and those inside it<br />
Emergency escape breathing device (EEBD)<br />
Should the atmosphere in the space become unsuitable, and especially if someone is feeling<br />
unwell/or it is a particularly large space – for instance a double bottom ballast tank – EEBDs<br />
may significantly help those trying to evacuate.<br />
Warning EEBD sets are designed for escape and are not to be used for entering a space to<br />
conduct a rescue.<br />
