Applied Electronics offers genuine American-made craftsmanship that defines our comprehensive truss, ground 

support and roof system product line. Premium raw materials and skillful assembly by certified welders combine 

to create quality products in a variety of structural solutions for entertainment and production rigging. We carry 

a wide range of stock items in our catalog or can custom build to your exact specifications – and our 

experienced engineering and sales staff is ready to assist you. Applied Electronics has been a leader in 

entertainment structural solutions since 1984, with the experience to meet today’s demanding business and 

production challenges. We offer a wide variety of structural truss products for events, touring productions or 

permanently installed architectural applications. Put our knowledge to work for you. 

Standard 

Applied Electronics Standard truss represents the most commonly available truss in the entertainment and 

production industries. Simple and durable, this style of truss has been the workhorse of the industry for many 

years. Its design is perfect for carrying simple lighting loads or accessories such as drapes and scenery. Both 

plated and spigoted products are available. The standard series of truss is ideal for circles, stars and other 

custom projects. 

Heavy Duty 

Heavy Duty is, as its name suggests, ideal for situations 

where long spans or high load capacities are required. 

This truss is well suited for large roof systems and arena 

grids. Both plated and spigoted designs are available. 

PRT 

Pre-rigged truss is designed to store and ship one or two 

lamp bars of fixtures, either traditional PAR cans, Source 4 

style instruments, or LED instruments, that can be lowered 

through the truss at show time and can be safely secured 

for transport. This style of truss is ideal when combined 

with the proper sleeve blocks and ground support towers, 

as the upstage, down stage and perimeter truss in our roof 

systems. Both plated and spigoted designs are available. 

Specialty 

If your theater, multipurpose room or entertainment venue 

needs a specialized product, Moving Light, Basketball and 

Catwalk are just a few of the specialty truss products 

offered by Applied Electronics. 

Architectural 

Available in both box and tri, this truss is ideal for trade show booths, small venues, retail showrooms and other 

installations with light load limits. The highly polished aluminum finish blends with contemporary design 

elements or this truss can be powder coated to match an interior design scheme. The Architectural series of 

truss is ideal for circles, stars and other unique projects. 

Custom 

When you need more than standard truss to complete your creative vision, our staff will work with you from 

design through the manufacturing process to create a custom product for your project or event. Our designers 

use Solid Works and Auto Cad, three dimensional modeling programs, so that you will be able to see, review, 

modify and approve your project, online, prior to production.

TRUSS CARE AND SAFETY 

RECOMMENDED PRACTICES 

TRUSS CARE AND SAFETY 

DESIGN 

Truss is designed for a specific load and usage and is 

generally a reliable, maintenance free product as long as it 

is used within the design parameters. Review the loading 

figures carefully as they are a guideline to loading and 

rigging your truss. This engineering data will help you 

determine the type of truss required for your application. 

Structural engineering reports are available from Applied 

Electronics. They are available for reference and should be 

in the user’s possession. This report shows the maximum 

loads for given spans and also indicates the maximum span 

of the truss being used. 

HANDLING & TRANSPORTATION 

Truss is designed to provide years of reliable service when it is handled with care. Do not drop truss as this may dent 

the chords or deform the end plates causing a poor connection between sections. Do not drag truss as this will cause 

flat spots or pitting and subsequently lower the capacity of the effected members. When loading/unloading truss, 

secure it for transport to prevent rubbing or bouncing. When using a forklift take care not to puncture the diagonals or 

chords. Always lift truss from the bottom chords. 

IDENTIFICATION LABELS 

All trusses must have an identification label attached in order for you to relate the following: item number, order 

number, fastener requirements and load specifications. The label must not be removed. This label will also allow for 

proper recordkeeping of annual inspections. 

INSPECTION 

All trusses must be inspected, no exceptions. ANSI E1.2 requires yearly and before each use visual inspections for 

possible structural weakness by a competent person. 

Check: Chords for dents, bends and abrasion… 

Check: Diagonals for dents, bends, abrasions, cracks, missing… 

Check: End Plates for flatness, hole deformation or excessive wear… 

Check: Pinned connections for deformation at the spigot or pin hole… 

Check: Geometry of truss for twisting, bending, that it is straight and plumb… 

Check: Welds for cracks and abrasions… 

Check: All hardware for proper grading, deformation and excessive wear… 

Any truss that does not pass a visual inspection should be marked “DO NOT USE”, the damage should be flagged 

…and if necessary TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE. Truss that is damaged can be returned to APPLIED ELECTRONICS 

for evaluation and possible repair.

HEAVY DUTY BOX TRUSS 

20.5”x30” Plated 

FEATURES 









This heavy duty truss is for those projects with ever 

increasing load and distance requirements. The truss is 

plated and connected with grade 8 bolts as standard and 

can be combined with GS Towers and suitable sleeve 

blocks to create a roof system perimeter or LED screen 

support structure. This truss can be supplied with casters. 

The main chords are 1-1/2“ schedule 80, 1.9” OD 6061-T6 

aluminum and the diagonals are 1-3/8“ OD tube with 0.125” 

wall.

The Tower Lifting Ladder is available for 12”, 16” and 20.5” 

towers and is designed to raise and lower GS Towers utilizing 

a one ton chain hoist (not included with ladder). The lifting 

ladder is bolted to the tower sleeve block, the hoist is rigged to 

the lifting point and the chain is positioned over the ladder 

pulley, then passed over the tower head block wheels and 

attached to the tower truss. When power and control signals 

are sent to the motor, the tower will rise; when the tower

ROOF SYSTEMS 

Applied Electronics manufactures roof systems in several popular configurations; Sloped, Arched, 

Peaked and Custom designs to fit your specific production requirements. The typical roof system has a 

perimeter grid made up of standard truss, which would usually be supplied in 10ft sections, although 

other lengths can be used. The dimensions of the roof are determined by the number of truss sections 

in each direction plus the dimensions of the towers and sleeve blocks. The width of the down stage and 

up stage span will be determined by the type of truss used, the same parameters apply to the stage 

left/right spans. Roof systems can be constructed as load bearing or non load bearing depending on the 

lighting, sound and scenic equipment the roof must 

support. The payload of the roof is governed primarily by 

the number and type of towers at each side and the 

choice of perimeter truss. The roof system is formed by 

constructing a grid of ladders and truss between the 

towers, creating a series of bays. It is this feature that 

determines the point load capacities anywhere on the 

grid. The roof grid is covered with a custom tarp of high 

grade reinforced vinyl material. The roof tarp can be 

divided into pieces for easy handling on larger roofs. 

Most roof systems can be fitted with sound wings to fly 

audio. Applied Electronics can provide engineering data 

and certification for your roof system once the design 

and application is finalized. If your production requires a 

custom roof system our design team will work with you to 

find a solution for your production.

CUSTOM SYSTEMS 

Among the many festivities surrounding Super Bowl XLIV in the Miami area in 2010 was The Celebrity Beach 

Bowl. Applied Electronics and Light Action teamed with Jack Murphy Productions to design and build a custom 

venue for the event held on the ocean front at South Beach. In addition to bleachers and a large performance 

stage, this 180-foot, multi-level structure was constructed to provide seating and hospitality for the client’s VIPs. 

Researchers from the University of Hawaii’s ocean and 

resources engineering department conduct an 

experiment to study internal wave turbulence over a 

coral reef off the south shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The 

team, led by marine research engineer Kimball Millikan, 

selected Applied Electronics Euro Truss to build an 

underwater tower to support 32 sensors that measure 

temperature, conductivity, pressure, velocity, 

pitch and roll. 

A custom design/build roof system for the stage at 

Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. The main trusses span 

more than 50 feet and measure 8’-10” at the top of the 

arc. The roof structure is designed in modular sections 

so that it can be disassembled and stored during the off 

season.

Crank Up Lifts 

The Applied Electronics hand crank lifts have been a mainstay of our product line for more 

than 20 years. When combined with adaptors and accessories, these lifts are ideal for lighting

Mini Tower 

The L-25 Mini Tower is available with a standard

Ground Support Towers 

Applied Electronics GS Towers are constructed from 

heavy duty, schedule 80, 6061-T6 aluminum tube and

Line Array Towers

Hoist Control 

Applied Electronics MC Series Hoist Controller provides control for up to 48 hoists. The system is comprised

APPLIED ELECTRONICS TERMS AND CONDITIONS 

CREDIT POLICY: 

Pricing quotes are valid thirty days from quote date. Past due balances are subject to 1.5% interest per month, 18% annually. In the 

event of a legal dispute, the customer agrees to pay all reasonable attorney’s fees and costs incurred by MATTHIAS 

ENTERPRISES d/b/a APPLIED ELECTRONICS in protecting its rights under this agreement. Any legal dispute shall be handled in 

the state or federal courts of the State of Virginia. 

It is the policy of APPLIED ELECTRONICS, that payment be received with the order unless other arrangements have been made. 

Credit will only be extended to those clients who have successfully completed a credit application and a signed purchase 

agreement with APPLIED ELECTRONICS. Down payments will be required from customers (including those with credit approval) 

for custom products or other situations that require special raw material purchases or engineering. 

SHIPPING POLICY: 

Shipping charges are based on classes calculated by weight, size and density. Insurance shall be limited to the amount allowed by 

class. All charges are estimated. Charges are based on delivery to a commercial property with a loading dock. All shipments are 

FOB (Freight on Board) Newport News, Virginia, and shall be in good order upon release to the carrier. All freight should be 

inspected for damage and checked for quantity against bill of lading from carrier and packing slip provided by Applied 

Electronics. Inspect shipments by removing all packaging and checking the truss for damage to chords, internals or to the end of 

tubes before signing carrier’s receipt. If any damage occurs, it MUST be noted on freight bill to enable consignee to file a claim 

against the carrier. Any transport insurance is the responsibility of the purchaser. Applied Electronics will not be held responsible or 

liable for damage, loss or delay in transit. Time specific deliveries, lift-gate service, churches and schools may incur additional 

charges by the carrier. 

PRODUCT GUARANTEE: 

APPLIED guarantees its metal and truss products will be free from defects in workmanship and materials at the time of purchase 

and that providing the purchaser follows the manufacturer's guidelines for use, the product will be guaranteed for a period of one 

year from date of shipment to perform according to the published specifications of the product. APPLIED is not responsible for 

damage to product in transit, or in cases where load specifications were exceeded or where guidelines for usage were not followed. 

APPLIED guarantees its electronic products will be free from defects in workmanship and materials for a period of two years from 

date of shipment. Defects in workmanship or materials becoming evident within the warranty period will be repaired by APPLIED at 

no cost for parts or labor to the customer. APPLIED reserves the right to replace any product or part with the same or equivalent 

item rather than repair it. Replaced items become the property of APPLIED. This guarantee applies only to products that have been 

used and maintained according to manufacturer’s guidelines and does not cover damages incurred in transit or as a result of 

improper use. These damages include but are not limited to those caused by improper voltage or installation, drops and falls or 

short circuits in connected equipment. APPLIED reserves the right to inspect product for damage not covered under this guarantee 

before conducting repairs. The customer is responsible for shipping product to APPLIED for service. If repaired under warranty, 

product return shipping will be paid by APPLIED. Items repaired or replaced under warranty do not extend or renew the original 

guarantee period. 

Except as expressly stated and warranted herein: (i) APPLIED disclaims any other warranties, whether express or implied, 

including any warranty of merchantability or fitness for a specific purpose; (ii) unless project engineer reports are included, 

APPLIED has made no affirmations of fact or promise relating to the goods being sold that has become the basis of this bargain, or 

that has created or amounted to an express warranty that the goods would conform to any such affirmation or promise; (iii) this 

warranty extends exclusively to the original purchaser of the warranted goods and subsequent purchasers are not covered by this 

warranty; (iv) this warranty does not apply to a part which the buyer misuses, damages, improperly maintains, repairs, or replaces 

with a part not of APPLIED's manufacture; and (v) except for its duty to repair or replace defective parts, APPLIED shall not be 

liable for any consequential or incidental damages resulting from a defective part. 

APPLIED reserves the right to change materials or design, when, in our opinion, such changes will improve the product. This 

warranty is performable in Newport News, Virginia, and all obligations, rights, and duties of buyer and APPLIED shall be governed 

by the laws of the State of Virginia. 

RETURN POLICY: 

Prior to returning any item purchased from APPLIED, a customer must first contact APPLIED to obtain a Returned Goods 

Authorization number (RGA#). Returned goods without prior authorization will not be accepted. APPLIED will not generally pay the 

cost of return freight, and reserves the right to refuse return shipments where the freight has not been pre-paid by the returning 

party. A restocking fee of 25% will be charged on all returns in good resalable condition. Items received in poor or damaged 

condition will be subject to a higher restocking fee.
