Dear Academy Traveler,
You are invited to join us on one of our most popular journeys: a 10-day adventure to the
Amazon rainforest aboard an elegant nineteenth-century-styled expedition boat. Veteran
Academy Leader Tom Daniel will lead this remarkable expedition through the world’s
largest and most diverse rainforest, blending superb wildlife viewing with comfortable
accommodations, exquisite cuisine and attentive service.
Travel deep into the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, avoiding built up areas and enjoying far richer
wildlife viewing. Daily excursions into the rainforest provide opportunities to glimpse a number
of primate species (monk sakis, red howler and squirrel monkeys), up to 100 kinds of birds, and
nocturnal wildlife such as caimans, capybaras and common potoos. You might even see the
endangered giant otter or the rare harpy eagle. Throughout the program, Tom Daniel will share
his extensive knowledge about the most unique and important plant ecosystems in the world.
Aboard our unique expedition boat, La Amatista, you’ll enjoy well-appointed, air-conditioned
cabins and private baths. An elegant dining parlor and expansive observation deck, along
with expert wildlife interpretation by local naturalist guides, create a perfect combination of
comfort and adventure.
Space is limited to just 31 travelers. To make your reservation, please return the attached form.
I hope you will join fellow Academy members for this exciting adventure.
Sincerely,
Voyage Itinerary
Friday, March 27 – U.S. / Lima – Fly to Lima, Peru — the
nation’s capital and largest city — and transfer to our hotel for the
night. (D Aloft)
Saturday, march 28 – Iquitos / Embark Amazon Riverboat
We fly over the Andes Mountains to Iquitos, where time permitting
we take a brief city tour before boarding our riverboat, home for the
coming week. Tonight we cruise slowly up the Amazon, looking at the
stars of the northern and southern constellations. (B,L,D)
Sunday, march 29 – Amazon River / Río Ucayali – We awake
this morning on the Amazon, seeing some of the ever-changing
panorama of jungle life as the ship continues upriver. Small villages dot
the shoreline, and channels weaving through island mazes provide closeup
views of a variety of marsh birds, such as oriole black birds and
yellow-headed caracaras. The confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón
Rivers is famous as the beginning of the Amazon River. Amazingly,
we are about 2,400 miles from where the river flows into the Atlantic.
The river drops only about 350 feet the entire way!
We cruise onto the Río Ucayali, where we may find
gray and pink dolphins cavorting near the ship and along
the shoreline. Later we venture into the rainforest in search of giant
water lilies and elusive wildlife, such as monkeys and sloths. As dusk
approaches, fishing bats begin their night’s foraging. (B,L,D)
Monday, march 30 – Río Ucayali / Pacaya-Samiria Reserve
We explore a small tributary in search of red-breasted, white or
black piranha, common in the slower-moving water. With luck, we
may feast on our catch this evening! We look for primates, sloths
and an enormous variety of birds. We continue upriver to the
Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, the largest wetland reserve in the world. This
afternoon, an excursion here provides the opportunity to see primates
including monk sakis, red howler, saddle-backed tamarin and squirrel
monkeys. We explore Caro Lake, connected to the river by a very
small stream, where we may find flocks of greater ani, often seen
following monkeys in search of insects disturbed by their foraging.
We enjoy a nighttime boat excursion for a chance to find caimans,
capybaras, common potoos, frogs and other nocturnal wildlife. (B,L,D)
DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS
• Explore the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, a
vast area deep in the Amazon wilderness
where wildlife is abundant. Large macaws
are frequently observed here.
• We’ll look for birds, many of which are
only found here, including spangled
cotinga, hoatzin, russet-backed oropendola
and maybe the rare harpy eagle.
• Search for up to fifteen species of primates
in the wild, including squirrel, monk saki
and red howler monkeys.
• Enjoy close encounters with Amazon
wildlife, including capybaras, black
caimans, three-toed sloths and giant blue
morpho butterflies.
• Look for both pink and gray Amazon
River dolphins swimming near our boat.
• All wildlife excursions are led by skilled
local naturalist guides.
• Travel aboard the finest traditionally
crafted riverboat up the Amazon.
• Visit remote villages and meet their
friendly people, the Ribereños.

Tuesday, march 31 – Pacaya-Samiria Reserve – We spend
the day exploring this flooded realm, seeing wading birds such as
herons, wattled jacanas and horned screamers. Parrots, including the
endangered scarlet macaw, are common. We watch for giant river
otters, which have become increasingly rare but still may be found,
and may also see black caimans and manatees. We enter an igapó
(seasonally flooded forest), where plant life is very different from what
we see along the main course of the Amazon, and walk through the
forest. (B,L,D)
j e n n i f e r k u n at h
Wednesday, april 1 – Pacaya-Samiria Reserve – We board
our excursion boats for access even further into the heart of the
vast wetlands. We’ll find birds such as canary-winged parakeets and
blue-and-gold and scarlet macaws. Primates are also fairly common,
including noisy squirrel monkeys. At a ranger station we may take a
short hike to explore the forest. After a picnic lunch, we make our
way back to our riverboat through the maze of waterways. (B,L,D)
Thursday, April 2 – Río Ucayali & Tributaries – This morning we
head downriver, with a wildlife excursion or other activity. This
afternoon, if conditions permit, we explore the narrow Tapiche River.
After dark we’ll take our excursion boats to listen to the sounds of the
rainforest and look for nocturnal wildlife. (B,L,D)
Friday, April 3 – Río Ucayali / Amazon River – This morning
we visit a village along the river, with the chance to learn about the
lives of the Ribereño people who live there. We continue downriver
towards Iquitos, with time to complete our wildlife checklists, and
enjoy a farewell dinner. (B,L,D)
Saturday, April 4 – Iquitos / Lima / En Route – We disembark
in Iquitos and fly to Lima. We tour Lima, seeing the Cathedral and
Plaza Mayor, then enjoy lunch at a distinctive restaurant. The rest of
the afternoon is free, with dayrooms reserved at our hotel, before we
transfer to the airport for our flight to the U.S. (B,L)
Sunday, April 5 – U.S. – We arrive in the U.S. and connect with
flights home. (Meals Aloft)
B-breakfast, L-lunch, D-dinner
Please note: Itineraries may vary because of changes in air schedules,
weather and local conditions.
arrival, we meet our guide and leave for the historic Urubamba Valley.
After lunch, we explore Ollantaytambo, where ancient temples and
fortresses were built to protect the Sacred Valley. We spend the night
at the Sonesta Posada Yucay. (B,L,D)
monday, april 6 – Urubamba / Machu Picchu – Take a train
to Machu Picchu, known as the “Lost City of the Incas,” where we
spend the afternoon. Machu Picchu’s existence was virtually forgotten
until its rediscovery by Hiram Bingham in 1911. We spend two nights at
the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. (B,L,D)
