President’s Corner
Hi Folks
May 12, 2013
Spring may get here, and then again, it may go straight into summer.
My sister’s husband got about 40 mushrooms last week but I have
not been out yet. The Silver Broadhead shoot is coming up this
weekend. We will be setting courses Wednesday before the
meeting. Be sure to come out and shoot. I will set up a tent and may
camp depending on the weather.
We have staked out the handicapped parking stall and hope to start
moving dirt this month after the state returns the grant approval
forms. The stakes are painted pink on top so please leave them be.
We have been working on animals and have recovered a few. We
should be able to fix enough to run our summer league with 3-Ds
again. The summer league will start the first week of June. It will run
ten weeks and the cost is $60. It will run Sunday through Friday.
You can shoot anytime during that period and turn your score in at
the box in the pavilion.
Please remind any of your friends who have not renewed their
membership to please do so. And if you have any other friends who
might be interested encourage them to come out and join. So
anyway, good shooting and I hope to see you out there.
Long Time Member Interview: Chuck Zvacek
I've had the privilege of working and shooting along side Chuck at the club for the last seven years. I chose to interview him
for this month's Shavings because to me he is representative of those of you who for many years have consistently and quietly
helped the club set up shoots, run the kitchen, and get projects done. To all of you I say “Thank You”, it is because of
volunteers like you and Chuck that the Waltonian Archers has continued to go and to grow.
Don: When did you join the Waltonian Archers and who got you started in archery?
Chuck: I joined the Walc in September 1971, and my club sponsor was Larry Briney.
Don: What was the club like 40 years ago?
Chuck: Back then the club was almost completely recurve & longbow shooters. Dick Reese was the first club member to
begin shooting the compound. A lot of families with kids were active in the club. Work weekends were packed with people. We
always had a potluck meal in the pavilion. A lot of people were involved with mowing, raking, refacing dirt butts, re-painting
the shooting blocks, and measuring and placing the shooting blocks through out the four field ranges. At that time I helped plant
a lot of the pines at the top of the hill. Quite a few folks hunted for mushrooms and knew all the best places. I hunted
mushrooms occasionally. Rose Sanders and Joyce Isaacs hunted them a lot, so did Milt and Lenita Smith.
Don: Tell us about your most enjoyable bowhunting experiences.
Chuck: I used to bowhunt rabbits with friends in the Hughes Nursery between Wilson Avenue and Kmart. I only shot a couple
rabbits over the years but always had a lot of fun. You couldn't see very far in those trees, and almost all our shots were at
running rabbits. We used mostly blunt arrow tips for this and spent lots of time searching for our arrows in the snow. I still deer
hunt with bow and have taken five or six whitetails.
Don: Tell us about your family.
Chuck: My wife Cindy is deceased. I have two daughters, Debbie in Kansas City, Missouri, and Laurie in Cedar Rapids, and
four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Back in the 70s both daughters shot archery.
Don: Have you served as a club officer?
Chuck: I served on the board of directors several times. My wife Cindy served as club treasurer for a lot of years. She wanted
the club books accurate to the penny. One year when an audit of the books came up 5 cents short, Cindy exclaimed “I know that
nickel is here” and searched the floor under the audit desk and came up with the missing nickel from the carpet. The books were
correct!
Don: Do you have an amusing archery story to share?
Chuck: One year when Coralville Reservoir was flooded Chet Goldsberry and I went carp shooting in his boat. We were over
8 feet of water when Chet's bow slipped from his hand and 'kersplosh' into the water. Chet had to dive into the cold water but he
recovered his bow.
Don: Have you won any archery shoots over the years?
Chuck: They used to award traveling trophies for Club Shoot winners, and if you won a particular trophy three years in a row
you could “retire” it. I had 3 of them at home, but now they reside in the club's trophy case.
Don: Is there anything you would like newer members of our club to know?
Chuck: New members should know about our clubs many shoots and participate in as many as possible. Being invoved in
shoot setup and club projects is fun too.
