Women’s History Month highlights education<br />

From the very beginning of your<br />
enlisted military career, you are<br />
bombarded with training. First<br />
there is basic military training,<br />
then technical training, followed by<br />
career development courses and<br />
on-the-job training. Additionally, as<br />
soon as you complete your CDCs,<br />
there is a strong push to complete<br />
a Community College of the Air<br />
Force degree.<br />
There have always been earmarks<br />
and goals set for education<br />
and training in order to achieve career<br />
progression, but why? Is it just to create<br />
another box that needs to be filled?<br />
The answer is no. It is to create<br />
members who are experts in not only<br />
their jobs, but who can become an<br />
educated group of citizens. The more<br />
knowledge we have, the greater the<br />
effect will be on performing and accomplishing<br />
our mission.<br />
March commemorates Women’s<br />
History Month, and this year the<br />
theme is “Women’s Education – Women’s<br />
Empowerment.” Education is one<br />
of the best means to help you stand<br />
out from the crowd and set you up for<br />
success so the leaders around you will<br />
feel confident in empowering you. The<br />
pursuit of education shows a willingness<br />
and propensity for learning and<br />
bettering oneself.<br />
In my unit alone, the women<br />
around me hold CCAF degrees,<br />
bachelor of science degrees in<br />
mathematics and MBAs, and others<br />
are pursuing degrees in business<br />

goals were.<br />
A good education is essential for<br />
your career both in and out of uniform,<br />
so take advantage of the education<br />
benefits you’ve earned. While<br />
serving, members can take advantage<br />
of $4,500 a year in tuition assistance.<br />
There is also the GI Bill, which is a<br />
big part of our education benefits. The<br />
GI Bill includes the Post-9/11 GI Bill,<br />
The Montgomery GI Bill for Active<br />
Duty and Veterans and Montgomery<br />
GI Bill for Selected Reserves. There<br />
are also many other programs such<br />
as the Reserve Education Assistance<br />
Program and Spouse and Dependents<br />
Education Assistance. More and more<br />
schools are also taking advantage of<br />
the Yellow Ribbon Program.<br />

on which state you claim as<br />

'MyPlate' shapes 2012 National Nutrition Month<br />

The U.S. Department of Agriculture last year unveiled<br />
MyPlate as a simpler, more direct successor to the food<br />
guide pyramid it introduced 20 years ago.<br />
This year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is<br />
promoting the same concept with its theme “Get Your<br />
Plate in Shape” for National Nutrition Month, which is<br />
observed in March.<br />
“That theme follows the USDA’s plate method,” Jennifer<br />
Sides, Joint Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>-<strong>Randolph</strong> Health and<br />
Wellness Center registered dietitian, said. “Fruits and<br />
vegetables should take up half of your plate, and whole<br />
grains and proteins should take up the other half, with<br />
low-fat or fat-free dairy on the side.”<br />
Sides, who called the MyPlate concept more userfriendly<br />
than the food guide pyramid, said a healthy,<br />
balanced meal should also contain more vegetables than<br />
fruits – in a variety of colors.<br />
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly<br />
the American Dietetic Association, also recommends a<br />
variety of vegetables, “especially dark-green, red and<br />
orange varieties, as well as beans and peas.” The organization<br />
advises consumers to buy reduced-sodium<br />
or no-salt-added canned vegetables.<br />
“Vegetables and fruits are what most people are lacking<br />
in,” Sides said. “They are good because they fill you<br />

up and have a lot of health benefits.”<br />
Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins,<br />
minerals, fiber and antioxidants that may<br />
protect people from chronic diseases, including<br />
stroke, cardiovascular diseases and certain<br />
cancers, according to the Centers for<br />
Disease Control and Prevention.<br />
“Your plate should be half fruits and<br />
veggies for a reason,” Sides said. “If you<br />
can increase your fruit and vegetable<br />
intake, that’s a good place to start.”<br />
She said the HAWC’s class Nutrition and<br />
Fitness 101 addresses the MyPlate concept.<br />
“We talk about making healthy choices<br />
for each portion of the plate,” Sides said.<br />
The class’ nutrition-related topics also include<br />
serving sizes and reading food labels.<br />
Staff Sgt. Dennis Wichter, HAWC diet technician,<br />
said serving sizes are an important part<br />
of good nutrition. Portion sizes in the American<br />
diet are often too large.<br />
“It’s more about moderation than cutting things<br />
out completely,” he said.<br />
As an example, Wichter said a serving of<br />
lean meat – one protein source – is just three<br />
ounces.<br />

The 502nd Air Base Wing and its mission partners,<br />
the 12th Flying Training Wing and the 37th Training<br />
Wing, all earned overall “excellent” ratings as a result of<br />
recent compliance inspections conducted by the Air Education<br />
and Training Command Inspector General Team.<br />
The inspections were held independently at Joint Base<br />
<strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>-<strong>Randolph</strong> and <strong>JBSA</strong>-Lackland Feb. 6-13<br />
and March 5-9, respectively.<br />
Brig Gen. Theresa C. Carter, 502nd ABW commander,<br />
briefed 502nd ABW personnel on the results during a<br />
series of commander’s calls held Wednesday.<br />
“I’m incredibly proud of everyone here,” Carter said<br />
during the out-brief. “You all put forth a tremendous<br />
amount of effort and should be proud of the work you<br />
put in. My challenge for you now is to sustain this level<br />
of excellent performance.”<br />
The 802nd Mission Support Group and 902nd MSG<br />
were rated “excellent.” Prior to this assessment, only<br />
one of the last seven MSGs inspected in AETC earned a<br />
rating higher than satisfactory.<br />
In addition, both the Installation Exercise Program<br />
Office and the first emergency management exercise<br />
conducted in February at <strong>JBSA</strong>-<strong>Randolph</strong> earned an<br />
“outstanding” rating. This marks only the second time in<br />
14 years that an EME earned an “outstanding” rating.<br />
“The IEPO and EME grades are particularly noteworthy<br />
when I consider where we were last July and<br />
how far we’ve come as a joint base team,” Carter said.<br />
“The ABW and all of our mission partners, especially<br />
our medics with the 59th Medical Wing, clearly demonstrated<br />
our ability to work together in response to an<br />
emergency and manage the consequences.”<br />
“This inspection took a lot of hard work by a lot of<br />
people and I’m very proud,” Maj. Gen. Byron Hepburn,<br />
59th MDW commander, said. “But, we can’t rest on our<br />
laurels. We will take the IG findings and learn from them<br />
as we continue to build a premier ambulatory surgical<br />
center here at Lackland.”<br />
“Going into the inspection, I told our squadron commanders<br />
that I wasn’t worried too much about grades<br />
because ‘it’s clear that you all are the engine that makes<br />
Team Lackland go. You deliver excellent base support<br />
every day, and you do it right,’” Col. Richard Houghton,<br />
802nd MSG commander, said. “No matter what rating<br />
your individual team was assessed, you all are part<br />
of an excellent mission support group and an excellent<br />
air base wing. Congratulations.”<br />
The 37th Training Wing also earned an overall<br />
“excellent” rating from the AETC IG team. Two of<br />
the wing’s groups, the Defense Language Institute<br />
English Language Center and the Inter-American<br />
Air Forces Academy, received “outstanding” overall<br />
ratings as did the wing’s inspection office. The 37th,<br />
737th and 937th Training Groups all were rated “excellent”.<br />
At the wing’s AETC IG team out-brief held Monday,<br />
Col. Eric Axelbank, 37th TRW commander, paid close<br />
attention to everyone’s reaction while the inspectors narrated<br />
the slide presentation.<br />
“I am proud of this wing and its people,” Axelbank<br />
said. “It was a rewarding experience seeing the group<br />
and squadron leadership team reactions to the IG’s superlative<br />
reviews of our wing. I value the quality of our<br />
people and the effort we make in fulfilling Air Force<br />
core values and our vision as the training standard of<br />
excellence.”<br />
“Regardless of the result, units are always better after<br />
an inspection because we have an independent evaluation<br />
of what we’re doing well and where we need to<br />
focus additional attention and resources,” Carter said.<br />
“Col. Mike Brown and his inspection team did a fabulous<br />
job providing all AETC units with a comprehensive,<br />
thorough and fair evaluation.”

<strong>JBSA</strong> master sergeants earn promotion<br />
Air Force officials announced March 8 the<br />
selection of more than 1,700 master sergeants for<br />
promotion to senior master sergeant.<br />
Those selected represent 13.78 percent of the<br />
12,351 eligible, with an average score of 670.44,<br />
4.12 years average time in grade and 19.27 years<br />
of time in service. The average score was based<br />
on the following point averages: 134.99 for enlisted<br />
performance reports, 20.66 for decorations,<br />
70.62 for the Air Force supervisory exam and<br />

Air Force Personnel Center sets application deadlines<br />

Air Force Personnel, Services and Manpower Public Affairs<br />
Applications for intermediate and senior developmental<br />
education for officers are due April 9, Air Force<br />
Personnel Center officials said.<br />
Civilians interested in basic developmental education<br />
or intermediate and senior developmental education will<br />
need to turn in their applications by May 1.<br />
Basic civilian programs include squadron officer<br />
school, education with industry and others. Intermediate<br />
programs include the Air Command and Staff College,<br />
Air Force Institute of Technology, international services<br />
program opportunities and a variety of fellowship and<br />
internship programs. Senior programs include Air Force<br />
and defense fellowships, Army War College, Air Command<br />
and Staff College with an Air War College followon,<br />
international services senior development program<br />
opportunities and more.<br />
Requirements and eligibility vary depending on the<br />
program, so applicants should carefully review the program<br />
guide before preparing application documents,<br />
Maj. Cotina Jenkins-Sellers, AFPC Officer Developmental<br />
Education Branch chief, said.<br />
• Officer Application Process<br />
IDE and SDE are part of the Air Force education<br />
continuum that helps develop strategic thinkers<br />
capable of leading the Air Force into the future,<br />
Jenkins-Sellers said.<br />
Officers use their AFPC secure web-based 3849 form<br />
to apply for developmental education, as in past years.<br />
Eligible officers and raters will be able to access the<br />
form hrough April 9.<br />
“The web-based 3849 is only accessible to IDE/<br />
SDE eligible officers and senior raters,” Jenkins-<br />
Sellers said. “It is on the AFPC secure website, so<br />
eligible officers should log in and click on the IDE/<br />
SDE icon to access it. Then, follow the site’s instructions<br />
to complete the form.”<br />
Candidates may apply for up to five IDE or SDE programs,<br />
and must be nominated by the senior rater to<br />
compete for development team and Air Force Developmental<br />
Education Designation Board consideration.<br />
Candidates must also ensure their Airman Development<br />
Plan is up-to-date, the major said.<br />
“If you haven’t updated or used your AFPC secure<br />
account in the past 120 days, you need to make sure<br />
it’s accessible or re-establish your password and register<br />
your common access card as soon as possible to avoid<br />
delays,” she advised.<br />
All resources necessary to complete the application<br />
package are available on the Air Force Personnel<br />
Services website, under the officers’ force<br />
development section.<br />
• Civilian Application Process<br />
Civilian developmental education is also part of the<br />
Air Force education continuum designed to develop<br />
leaders, Susan Lang-Krudwig, AFPC CDE program manager,<br />
said.<br />
“Our goal is to ensure promising employees are<br />
able to pursue developmental education that suits<br />
their goals and supports Air Force mission needs,”<br />
Lang-Krudwig said.<br />
This year, approximately 700 candidates between<br />
GS-7 and GS-15 will be selected for basic developmental<br />
education, intermediate developmental education or<br />
senior developmental education with funding provided<br />
by the AFPC Leadership Development Office, she said.<br />
Civilians must be nominated for CDE by their leadership<br />
and endorsed by their chain of command. Once<br />
an employee receives an endorsement, the nomination<br />
package must be submitted by the employee through<br />
AFPERS, unlike previous years when an employee or<br />
their major command mailed the hard copy application.<br />
Upon submission, the employee will receive confirmation<br />
that the nomination was received.<br />
“This process also allows the nominee to use the question<br />
box in the submission area to begin a dialogue with<br />
the AFPC leadership development staff about their package,”<br />
Lang-Krudwig explained.<br />

Officials urge families to practice fire safety<br />

At night when family members sleep,<br />
a smoke alarm could be the difference<br />
between life and death, giving them time<br />
to evacuate their home.<br />
Monthly smoke alarm checks and<br />
annual battery replacements are paramount<br />
in home fire safety.<br />
“To test your home smoke alarm, all<br />
you do is press the button; to change the<br />
battery, twist the alarm, pull down and<br />
replace the nine-volt battery,” Staff Sgt.<br />

Fire Services station captain, said.<br />
Since smoke and heat rise, smoke<br />
alarms should be placed high on walls<br />
or on ceilings in each bedroom and<br />
at least one on each floor, to include<br />
basements, Eloy Uresti, 902nd CES/FS<br />
fire prevention chief, said.<br />
Each floor should also include a fire<br />
extinguisher, he said.<br />
“Our families’ safety is very important<br />
to all of us,” Uresti said. “A working<br />
smoke detector is an early warning<br />
system, especially at night when<br />
you’re sleeping.”<br />
The effects from smoke inhalation<br />
could be serious and dangerous. Before<br />
the fire fully ignites, the smoke is hot<br />
and can burn the nose, throat, lungs and<br />
esophagus, Blue said. Smoke is the beginning<br />
stage of the fire.<br />
“Families should have an evacuation<br />
plan and practice exit drills in their<br />
homes,” Uresti said. “They should also<br />
designate a rally point outside of the<br />
home and have everyone meet there.”<br />
Blue urges everyone to get out of the<br />
house if the smoke alarm ever goes off.<br />
“Don’t act like a hero and get yourself<br />
hurt,” he said. “Just stay safe and call the<br />
fire department.”<br />
Fire hazards in the home include space<br />
heaters, fireplaces, dirty chimneys and<br />
unattended ovens and stoves.<br />
“In case of a fire, never go back<br />
into a burning building for any reason,”<br />
Uresti said. “It’s been well documented<br />
how people have returned<br />
into a burning structures to retrieve<br />
pets or personal belongings, only to<br />
succumb to the heat and smoke and<br />
become a fatality.”<br />

answering the call to consume less energy<br />
with the addition of new fuel-efficient<br />
vehicles to the base motor pool.<br />

manager, said <strong>JBSA</strong>-<strong>Randolph</strong><br />
received three new Ford Fusion hybrids,<br />
purchased by the Air Force, and<br />
that 20 more are expected to arrive on<br />
base by late summer.<br />
“This is an Air Force-wide effort to<br />
push for using alternative fuel,” Bazzel<br />
said. “Hybrids use less fuel and will<br />
be environmentally friendly, especially<br />
on a low-speed driving base like <strong>Randolph</strong><br />
because the cars will use more<br />
battery power. All of the Air Education<br />
and Training Command bases will be<br />
receiving Ford Fusion hybrids.”<br />
In addition to fuel efficiency, the new<br />
vehicles will have lower carbon dioxide<br />
emissions, which will enhance the Air<br />
Force's commitment to 'green' initiatives.<br />
Carbon dioxide pollution is still<br />
rampant in the United States with an<br />
annual carbon output of 20 tons per<br />
person. That’s 16 tons more than the<br />
world average, according to the United<br />
Nations Environment program.<br />
Another major pollutant tracked by<br />
the Environmental Protection Agency<br />
is ground-level ozone.<br />
There is a direct relationship between<br />
temperature and concentrations<br />
of ground-level ozone. As temperatures<br />
increase, primarily from<br />
the amount of carbon dioxide vehicles<br />
emit, ground-level ozone increases,<br />
creating smog.<br />

manager, said this can greatly damage<br />
our overall health.<br />
The reduction of air pollution should<br />
be everyone’s concern, Williston said.<br />
“We (<strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>) are close to reaching<br />
a nonattainment level during ozone<br />
season, which means the city is at risk<br />
to breathe in sub-par levels of air quality<br />
from May to December,” she said.<br />
These months are especially pertinent<br />
to Texas because of perpetually dry climates<br />
and high temperatures that create<br />
the perfect storm for air pollutants to<br />
stagnate into the atmosphere.<br />
In fact, the northwest region of <strong>San</strong><br />
<strong>Antonio</strong> registered nine days during<br />
summer 2011 on the Texas Commission<br />
on Environmental Quality’s monitor<br />
where the city exceeded the eight-hour<br />
ozone average. These days occurred<br />
from May to October. The air quality<br />
during those days was unhealthy for<br />
sensitive groups, such as children and<br />
people with heart and lung disease.<br />
“Younger children with developing<br />
lungs and elderly people with depressed<br />
immune systems are also the<br />
most affected by poor air quality,” Williston<br />
said. “With poor air quality, they<br />
have to limit their time outdoors.”<br />
Because of summnertime outdoor<br />
activities and vacation travel, Williston<br />
placed a heavy emphasis on drivers to<br />
improve their fuel efficiency, reduce<br />
their carbon dioxide emissions and<br />
improve air quality.<br />
According to the U.S. Department of<br />
Transportation, the average American<br />
drives 13,476 miles per year. There<br />
are a variety of ways to help slash<br />
that average.<br />
“It’s not so much what type of vehicle<br />
you drive, even though that is important<br />
regarding your fuel efficiency, but it’s how<br />
you drive your vehicle,” Williston said.<br />
“Combine as many errands as possible<br />
into one trip. Several short trips taken<br />
from a cold start can use twice as much<br />
fuel as longer, multipurpose trips.<br />
“Taking advantage of carpools, rideshare<br />
programs and public transportation<br />
can cut your weekly fuel costs in half<br />
and save wear on your car if you take<br />
turns driving with other commuters.”<br />
Also, avoiding long idles when your<br />
engine is on and avoiding high speeds<br />
should be on every driver’s mind. Depending<br />
on your vehicle, taking these<br />
measures can save up to 3 cents and<br />
24-80 cents per minute on the road respectively,<br />
Williston said.<br />
Keeping your tires properly aligned<br />
and inflated, avoiding carrying unnecessary<br />
items in your trunk, reducing<br />
the use of air conditioning and getting<br />
regular engine tune-ups are also<br />

great fuel economy benefits that can<br />
save you money.<br />
“Try not to drive during rush hour if<br />
possible, and fill up your gas tank after<br />
6 p.m., when the heat waves begin to<br />
dissipate,” especially in the summertime<br />
during ozone season, Williston said.<br />
Driving less equates to a lower carbon<br />
footprint, which decreases groundlevel<br />
ozone and can help improve overall<br />
quality of life.<br />

good eating habits and weight loss, myfitnesspal.<br />
com provides members with the ability to track<br />
what they eat, a database of more than 1.5 million<br />
food items that lists information such as calories<br />
and fat grams, a personalized diet profile and discussion<br />
forums.<br />
“It’s all about accountability and awareness of<br />
what you’re taking in,” she said. “People don’t realize<br />
how much they’re eating, so it’s a very good<br />
awareness tool.”<br />
Sides said the traditional American meal is “a<br />
large portion of meat, something starchy like potatoes,<br />
then a little bit of vegetables,” so the theme<br />
“Get Your Plate in Shape” is an admonition to consumers<br />
to rearrange their mealtime priorities.<br />
“It’s reshaping your plate,” she said. “It helps you<br />
put in perspective how much you’re eating – it’s<br />
moderation and portion control.”<br />
Sides said people should also be aware of the<br />
drinks they consume – because sugar- and calorieladen<br />
drinks can pack on the pounds and lead to<br />
health issues.<br />
A nutrition education and information campaign<br />
created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics,<br />
National Nutrition Month was initiated in March<br />
1973 as a week-long event before it became a monthlong<br />
observance seven years later. The academy’s<br />
year-long mission is to promote optimal nutrition<br />
and well-being for all people.

Chief Lewis wraps up 28-year Air Force career<br />

Force today at the same place<br />
where it began – the basic military<br />
training parade grounds<br />
at Joint Base <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>-<br />
Lackland.<br />
Chief Master Sgt. Juan Lewis,<br />
known as the “The Fired Up<br />
Chief,” by his signature moniker<br />
on all his email traffic,<br />
ends his military career by<br />
leading the Air Force’s newest<br />
Airmen over the bomb run, and<br />
one final time in front of the<br />
BMT grandstand.<br />
A fervent leader, the 502nd<br />
ABW command chief is also<br />
identified across <strong>JBSA</strong> for his PEP<br />
– Pride, Enthusiasm and Passion.<br />
It’s a message he has spread<br />
throughout his four-year tenure<br />
in <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>, first as command<br />
chief of the 37th Training Wing,<br />
and then at the 502nd ABW.<br />
“The one thing I’m really going<br />
to miss the most is helping the<br />
Airmen,” Lewis said. “I’ll miss the<br />
interaction with them and helping<br />
them achieve their goals.”<br />
As the 502nd ABW’s top enlisted<br />
leader, Lewis was the primary<br />
adviser to Brig. Gen. Theresa C.<br />
Carter, 502nd ABW commander,<br />
on all matters affecting the quality,<br />
welfare, morale and management<br />
of <strong>JBSA</strong> enlisted personnel.<br />
It’s a role Lewis relished.<br />
“We’ve got to communicate<br />
with our Airmen in the lower<br />
ranks, and let them communicate<br />
with us,” Lewis said. “A great<br />
responsibility has been placed on<br />
our shoulders. Parents want to<br />
know someone is going to take<br />
care of their children when they<br />
join the Air Force.”<br />
A Houston native, Lewis<br />
began his Air Force career in<br />
1984. He served in numerous<br />
enlisted positions, including NCO<br />
in charge of the honor guard<br />
and mortuary affairs at March<br />
Air Force Base, Calif. Later, he<br />
occupied top positions with the<br />
48th Services Squadron, 48th<br />
Mission Support Group and 48th<br />
Fighter Wing at Royal Air Force<br />
Lakenheath, England.<br />
Then he landed his ideal job<br />
as the 37th TRW command chief<br />
master sergeant in 2008.<br />
“This was my dream job and<br />
I’ve lived the dream,” Lewis said<br />
when he left Lackland in 2009<br />
for his <strong>JBSA</strong> position at nearby<br />
Fort Sam Houston.<br />
Retiring at Lackland is<br />
something Lewis said he’ll<br />
always cherish.<br />
“I could have done one more<br />
tour, but what a place to retire –<br />
Lackland Air Force Base, where<br />
it all starts,” the chief said. “To<br />
walk down the historic bomb run<br />
in 1984 and then to retire walking<br />
down the bomb run in 2012,<br />
it doesn’t get any better than this.<br />
“I look back at my time in<br />
the Air Force and think about<br />
all the people who helped me.<br />
I really appreciate each and<br />
every one of them.”<br />

proudly serving in the Air<br />
Force, this was the best<br />
decision I ever made, bar<br />

Air Force safety officials announced<br />
today that since Feb. 17, 2011, the Air<br />
Force has now gone for more than 12<br />
months without an on-duty ground fatality.<br />
After an exhaustive search of the<br />
Air Force Safety Center’s safety mishap<br />
database, officials confirmed the<br />
service reached this milestone for the<br />
first time in its history.<br />
On-duty ground safety includes industrial,<br />
occupational, sports and recreation<br />
and traffic-related activities<br />
while on the job.<br />
“This wonderful feat is due to the<br />
unrelenting commitment by commanders,<br />
supervisors, safety professionals and<br />
Airmen at all levels to accomplishing the<br />
mission safely and effectively,” Maj. Gen.<br />
Greg Feest, Air Force chief of safety, said.<br />
“It’s truly a team effort.”<br />
Bill Parsons, Air Force chief of ground<br />
safety, echoed the Air Force’s commitment<br />
to a safe work environment.<br />
“The Air Force’s investment in<br />
creating safe workplaces and procedures,<br />
managing risk and eliminating<br />
hazards clearly demonstrates that<br />
it’s possible, even under tough situations,<br />
to protect our Airmen from<br />
harm,” Parsons said. “Airmen work<br />
more confidently and efficiently, and<br />
tragic loss to co-workers, friends and<br />
family is avoided when organizations<br />
emphasize safety.”<br />
“I applaud the work done by all in<br />

Now that spring is in the air, it’s time for<br />
many people to shake their winter doldrums<br />
and plunge into physical activities like running,<br />
cycling and weight training or sports<br />
such as tennis, golf and softball.<br />
However, engaging in these activities with<br />
too much gusto too early can have dire consequences<br />
in the form of acute injuries, so fitness<br />
experts urge a slow approach combined<br />
with proper stretching exercises.<br />
“The most common injuries in springtime<br />
are sprains and strains in the ankle, knee or<br />
shoulder,” Capt. Becky Azama, 359th Medical<br />
Operations Squadron physical therapist,<br />
said. “These injuries are typically the result<br />
of people relaxing all winter. They want to go<br />
out and take up where they left off without<br />
proper preparation.”<br />
Azama said many people reduce their<br />
activity level in the winter because of bad<br />
weather and busy holiday schedules.<br />
“That will put them at risk for injury because<br />
they don’t have the right strength and<br />
flexibility for the activity they want to particiapte<br />
in come spring,” she said.<br />
Azama said people also run into problems<br />
“when their conditioning program<br />
doesn’t reflect the type of activity they<br />
will engage in, like going from a 30-minute<br />
workout on the treadmill three times a<br />
week to playing two hours of football.<br />
“My recommendation would be to take<br />
into consideration the activity you are trying<br />
to do and tailor your workout to that<br />
specific activity,” she said. “Where cutting<br />
is involved, such as in basketball or soccer,<br />
you need to practice cutting.”<br />
Azama recommends a dynamic stretching<br />
routine – which involves stretching from head<br />
to toe – to warm up before running or playing<br />
a sport. Static stretching is reserved for<br />
cooling down after a physical activity.<br />
Dynamic stretching uses controlled leg<br />
movements such as leg lifts and lunges to<br />
improve range of motion, loosen muscles<br />
and increase the heart rate. The movements<br />
should be geared to the person’s<br />
physical activity or sport.<br />
“There’s been a great push for dynamic<br />
stretching,” Azama said. “It’s better for<br />
muscles to go through movement patterns.<br />
You should be stretching afterward<br />
as well, but it would not necessarily be<br />
dynamic. You want the heart rate to come<br />
back down, so you do static stretching,<br />
getting the muscles to relax.”<br />
She recommended the website www.<br />

the importance of the warm-up routine.<br />
“Always warm up,” he said. “You’ll need<br />
to stretch; flexibility is key in any sport or<br />
exercise.”<br />
Richardson offered other suggestions.<br />
“When lifting weights, start lifting light<br />
weights for a few weeks to strengthen your<br />

tendons and ligaments,” he said. “Monitor<br />
your exertion level, using a heart-rate monitor,<br />
and stay at the lower end of our level for<br />
a few weeks before moving your level up.”<br />
Richardson said it’s important not to increase<br />
your level of exercise more than 10<br />
percent a week. He also recommended training<br />
with someone near your same fitness<br />
level; cross training by engaging in activities<br />
such as hiking, cycling, weight lifting, running<br />
and walking; staying hydrated; and investing<br />
in a good pair of training shoes.<br />
Azama also said a workout program<br />
should be varied, including cardiovascular<br />
and strength training.<br />
She urged people who are becoming more<br />
physically active to “use common sense.”<br />
“If you’re feeling pain, it’s not something<br />
you should push past,” Azama said. “It’s the<br />
body’s way of letting you know that something’s<br />
not quite right. Soreness generally<br />
goes away in a day or two. If the pain is sharp<br />
and lingers, it should get attended to.”<br />
