welcome and thank you
On behalf of everyone here
at Activate, producers of Inside
Out Dorset, I want to welcome
you to this year’s festival,
bringing extraordinary events
to extraordinary places in our distinctive
urban and rural landscape.
Every two years in September we bring you this
special and unique festival taking place in a wonderful
corner of the South West. With help from our funders
we make it a predominantly free festival and we
are working with some of the most inspiring artists
working outdoors.
We work with many people based in the heart of our
communities. I’d like to thank all these exceptional
people and organisations, volunteers and funders
who help us realise the programme.
We are very proud of the programme this year. So,
wherever you live and however far you travel, we’ve
thrown open the doors to the arts in the county.
Come with a friend: or your family; come for a
weekend, or longer!
We look forward to seeing you there.
Welcome to this
latest edition of
Inside Out Dorset.
We’re thrilled
again to have had the delight of finding
fascinating locations across Dorset for
unusual and intriguing performances.
In Ridgeway Responses we have had the chance
to realise our long cherished ambition; to commission
a number of South West artists to respond to the
landscape, in a programme of new work, developed
with colleagues at the Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty at the South Dorset Ridgeway Landscape
Partnership.
We have found our way to Poole Park for Boo, the
UK premiere of the remarkable aerial performance by
CirkVOST. The Roof will be part of a special weekend
in Bournemouth co-presented by us, Bournemouth
Arts by the Sea Festival and Pavilion Dance South
West. In Blandford we welcome back Periplum with
their magnificent reflection on war and peace, The
Bell and in the beautiful village of Studland our Anglo-
French circus programme Up in the Air will animate
many nooks and corners over our first weekend.
We really hope that you will join us on our special
journey across the county...
Acrobatic feats, high wires and humour
courtyard to a beautiful field with sea
views and bring a picnic to enjoy the day.
Frantic by Acrojou (UK)
20mins
Love, freedom, blood, sweat and rain-storms.
Breaking out of the mundane comes a beautifully
choreographed duet. This fusion of circus, dance
and visual design creates arresting imagery and
storytelling. From a hectic world encompassed within
the confines of a large wheel – watch the performers
break free from their frantic preoccupation and find
something else: stillness.
venue choice
How come it has taken us so long to find an
excuse to work in Studland? After the delights
of our Ashmore event 2012, we were looking for
another perfect Dorset village to transform with
circus and Studland has everything you could wish
for – an amazing coastline and beaches, an iconic
churchyard, a village green and the perfect village
pub. What’s more, the magic chain ferry delivers you
back to Poole for CirkVOST on Saturday evening.
La Serre by Lefeuvre and André (France)
30mins; limited capacity – free but ticketed: tickets
available at the front of house desk on the day
An intimate and playful performance set in a
polytunnel, where two frantic acrobats – two of
France’s leading circus performers Jean-Paul
Lefeuvre and Didier André – are the duty gardeners.
At each corner of their daft flower beds, they’ve
planted a bunch of bashful lovers, red carnations
and mini sunflowers – watch the mayhem unfold.
Le Chas Du Violon by Les Colporteurs
(France) UK premiere
20mins
Discover the story of a mother and her daughter on
tense wires where they dance barefoot, in cowboy
boots and stiletto heels. A fragile balance carried by
the melodic sound of the violin, the ropes, and the
wires. A performance of humour, tenderness and
lightness, performed by one of the world’s leading
circus companies.
Jaipur Kawa Brass Band (Rajasthan, India)
Sound the brass and drum! With elaborate rhythms
and virtuoso improvisations, this spectacular group
of authentic Rajasthanhi gypsies play everything
from traditional Indian classics to popular Bollywood
movie hits. Expect amazing energy and humour
and a unique musical feast representing the soul of
contemporary India.
market place
blandford forum, dt11 7eb
This 360 degree spectacle tells the
story of a warring clan in a warring
land, devastated and razed in flames
by invading forces. Emerging from the
smouldering debris, the survivors are
faced with a critical choice: seek revenge
or stay and rebuild.
The creation of a gigantic bell re-ignites the people’s
hope in this celebration of human resilience through
shared struggle. A sensory extravaganza, The
Bell takes inspiration from the films of Kurosawa
(Ran) and Tarkovsky (Andrei Rublev) with dynamic
promenade action, stilts, incendiary text & soaring
music to create a potent tale of hope & redemption.
Due to its subject matter and sound levels this
performance may not be suitable for young children.
The show also features fire and pyro from The World
Famous.
the company
Formed in 1999 by Artistic Directors Claire Raftery and
Damian Wright, Periplum place equal emphasis on
all elements of performance – striking visual design,
original text, specially commissioned music & quality
acting – to produce high-octane drama and a vibrant
theatre style.
venue choice
A wonderful market square that just begs for large
scale spectacle in a European style. Blandford’s
military history also provides the perfect context for
Periplum’s piece, encouraging us to ask questions
about the lives lost in wars past and present.
There will be major road closures because of the
show if you are driving, please allow additional time.
dorset, dt2 9hl
Across this weekend, Ridgeway Responses
brings you the work of 9 UK artists who
have been specially commissioned to
produce artworks which unlock the
heritage, history and environment of this
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
– the South Dorset Ridgeway.
Forming a trail between the Hardy Monument and
Ashley Chase, and taking in the stunning village of
Littlebredy, join us for a day or three to explore this
beautiful landscape. Look overleaf for the details of
the artists and the locations they will inhabit in the
South Dorset Ridgeway for the festival.
south dorset ridgeway
A trail through some of Dorset’s most distinctive and
beautiful landscapes, focusing on the South Dorset
Ridgeway (SDR) and in and around the little known
jewel, the village of Littlebredy. Nestled amongst the
folds of the hills, the hamlet is a tranquil and perfectly
formed slice of rural England.
With the support of the residents and the local
landowner Sir Philip Williams, we are delighted to
be able to invite our audiences to experience artistic
encounters in secret woodlands and precious country
estates, before striking out over hill and dale in
search of unique creations, hidden in very special
spots along the Ridgeway.
south dorset ridgeway partnership
As a partner in the SDR Partnership Scheme,
Activate put out an open call for artists’ proposals for
temporary artworks and performances in response
to the Ridgeway, in Summer 2013. Since then, 9
selected artists have had tailored support and time to
develop and situate their work in partnership with the
festival team, with input from local communities and
a wealth of experts across archaeology, heritage,
wildlife and geology. The process has unlocked rich
insights and unexpected discoveries for all involved.
The South Dorset Ridgeway provides an introduction
to the best that the British countryside has to offer.
It is home to a remarkable ancient ceremonial
landscape, mixed with some of the most spectacular
scenery in the UK.
The South Dorset Ridgeway deserves to be explored
further and for its rich heritage to become more
widely understood. The area takes in the high ground
between Dorset’s county town of Dorchester and
the Georgian resort town of Weymouth. The roughly
rectangular area of the Ridgeway is approximately
7km from north to south and 17km from west to east.
It is bordered by the English Channel to the south, the
River Frome valley to the north, the villages of West
Bexington in the west and Poxwell in the east.
The Butterfly Lady
Emma Williams
A captivating outdoor
encounter: costume and
puppetry are used to
reveal the habitat and
natural behaviour of
four butterflies which
can be found on the
South Dorset Ridgeway. Eccentricity abounds as an
expert and an enthusiast shares her knowledge with
the audience, attracting some unusual butterflies
along the way…
The White Hare
Sarah Butterworth
Recalling ancient chalk
figures of around
1000 BC, a temporary
landmark will be
created to pay homage
to the English hare. As
you enter Littlebredy,
the sound under the
you would miss if you
didn’t listen for them.
The secret music under
your feet. Audiences of all ages will be encouraged
to find the melodies under the earth using an eclectic
collection of exquisite and elaborate ear trumpets.
Landance, in
collaboration with
Impermanence Dance
exciting promenade
performances where
contemporary dance,
live music and visual art will fuse with the natural
landscape of the Valley of Stones.
Professional dancers will create a new movement
piece, in which the landscape has a powerful and
active role. Performing to a soundscape by Jez Riley
French, trumpet by Jim Dvorak and with visual art by
Ella Huhne, they will bring a stunning synthesis of
energy and sensitivity to this ancient valley.
associate programme our partnerships support us
Activate is committed to developing
opportunities for learning and participation
related to the core Inside Out Dorset
programme and creating professional
development opportunities for local and
regional artists.
We aim to work with a range of schools and
community groups across Dorset and have been
working on an in depth programme with our three
Associate schools, Queen Elizabeth in Wimborne
and Winton and Glenmoor School in Bournemouth
allowing students to gain Arts Awards. The breadth
of our reach is reflected in 2014’s programme which
includes; bamboo making in Poole and Bournemouth,
workshops in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester
Schools with the Ridgeway Responses artists and
visits to the sites and performances.
There are also great opportunities for Remix and
Portrait to perform at Up in the Air and alongside the
structures on Poole Quay. See page 11 for more info.
Community groups and volunteers have the chance
to be a part of The Bell in Blandford and other
opportunities include banner making and singing
workshops, plus we will be working with Vita Nova
in Bournemouth. We are growing our professional
development opportunities within the industry and
we are bringing Practice to Dorset for the first time.
Please see our website for further details and for
opportunities to get involved throughout the year.
Activate works with many partners to produce the
Inside Out Dorset festival. These range from our local
authorities, venues, arts organisations to community
champions, credited throughout the programme.
These are a few of our key partnerships this year.
The South Dorset Ridgeway Landscape Partnership
Activate is a partner in The South Dorset
Ridgeway Landscape Partnership, made up of
14 local organisations led by the Dorset Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is funded by
the Heritage Lottery Fund and is an innovative mix
of archaeologists, artists, historians, landowners,
naturalists, teachers and, most importantly local
people. Everyone has come together to safeguard
the South Dorset Ridgeway landscape, help people
enjoy it and feel pride for an area that many experts
consider as important as that around Stonehenge.
Activate is producing the new commissions in
Ridgeway Responses as part of ‘celebrating the
landscape’ in the partnership.
PASS Channel Circus
The PASS partnership aims to raise awareness of
contemporary circus. Partnership working between
four French and four UK partners enables us to learn
from each other through our collaborative experiences
of Production, Touring and Training.
Professional networks are expanded and the
sharing of good practice, knowledge and skills
enables personal and organisational growth and
development of an art form that, as a result of the
project, will reach a wider audience than could have
previously been possible. The underpinning ethos of
the project is to bring contemporary circus to a wider
and more diverse audience.
The PASS project was selected as part of the European
cross-border co-operation programme Interreg IV A
(Channel - France England) co-financed by the ERDF.
With special thanks to our Associate partners Crying
Out Loud, Theatre Bristol, Artsreach and the Rural
Touring network in the South West.
Dorset Theatre Promoters Consortium (DTPC)
– festival steering committee
The DTPC is a consortium of venues and programmers
who meet regularly to share knowledge and ideas
so that more contemporary performance can be
supported and presented across Dorset, Bournemouth
and Poole. DTPC co-commission new work, co-present
work and help programmers to offer companies and
artists more touring opportunities locally.
DTPC was the network behind the creation of the
festival and remains a steering group (with other
organisations) to support its development, as well
as active partnership and event delivery with Activate,
depending on the event and the site location.
Members of the expanded DTPC making up the
festival steering group with Activate include: Artsreach,
Borough of Poole, Bournemouth Arts (and Arts By The
Sea Festival - Bournemouth Borough Council), Bridport
Arts Centre, DepARTure, Dorchester Arts, Dorset
County Council, Lighthouse Poole, Marine Theatre,
Pavilion Dance South West, Wave and Weymouth
College.
Cultural Hub
The Cultural Hub is a unique consortium of arts/
cultural organisations and schools in Bournemouth
and Poole which promotes a direct dialogue, sharing
of skills and a meaningful relationship between the
education and cultural sectors.
Its role is to bring together colleagues from schools
and cultural organisations to create, develop and
deliver inspirational learning opportunities for children
and young people.
So that we can continue to bring great
art to everyone we always endeavour
wherever possible, to ensure the Inside
Out Dorset events are FREE.
Please support us in continuing to present high quality
large scale work by making a donation, large or small,
to Activate Performing Arts for Inside Out Dorset.
You can either choose to make a donation at an
event where our stewards will be collecting, online at
www.insideoutdorset.co.uk or by sending a cheque
payable to Activate Performing Arts. If you want to
take a greater part through sponsoring and patronage
we would be delighted to talk to you too – please
contact Natalie Gowing on 01305 260954 or email
