<strong>Reality</strong>:<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>New</strong> York City<br />

has increased by 65 percent<br />

night in 1998 to 35,200 in<br />

<strong>The</strong>se numbers are alarming! <strong>The</strong> Coalition’s frontline<br />

services rescue homeless <strong>New</strong> <strong>Yorkers</strong> every day.<br />

Crisis Intervention Program,<br />

among the Coalition’s most important<br />

services, is <strong>of</strong>ten the first step to getting<br />

families <strong>of</strong>f the streets <strong>and</strong> on their way<br />

to safer, more productive lives by providing<br />

emergency assistance for such necessities<br />

as shelter advocacy, food, baby formula,<br />

medication, <strong>and</strong> work uniforms.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Coalition helped more than 12,000<br />

people in the last year with grants for<br />

essentials such as diapers, work boots,<br />

subway fare, <strong>and</strong> clothing.<br />

Gr<strong>and</strong> Central Food Program (GCFP)<br />

is a lifeline for hundreds <strong>of</strong> homeless individuals<br />

<strong>and</strong> families who live rough on city<br />

streets by delivering food, clothing, blankets,<br />

<strong>and</strong> personal-hygiene items at 31 sites 365<br />

days a year.<br />

• In the past year alone the<br />

Gr<strong>and</strong> Central Food Program h<strong>and</strong>ed out<br />

over 1,000 emergency meals every<br />

night – that’s over 300,000 meals annually!<br />

• GCFP’s mobile outreach workers build<br />

relationships with street-bound homeless<br />

people <strong>and</strong> encourage them to take<br />

advantage <strong>of</strong> other Coalition programs.<br />

This is the first critical step to leaving life<br />

on the streets behind.<br />
