Spiritual Thoughts
Not too many people can claim that they have sixty-five
years experience as a contractor. My father can. That is
why a millionaire, who builds fancy houses, hires him. At
around nine in the morning, the millionaire brings the
coffee, doughnuts, pastries and juices. One time, dad had
another job for about two weeks. When he returned, a painter on the crew said
to him, “Boy, did we miss you.” Dad asked, "Why?" “Because,” the painter
said, “The builder always brings coffee and doughnuts when you are here.
When you are not, he never brings us coffee.” Dad called me and asked me
why I thought that was so. I thought about it and I think I figured it out. The
painter, the electrician, and the plumber have to be there, they have to work,
they have to put food on the table and keep the lights on. My father doesn’t
have to be there. He is eighty years old. He is retired - sort of. Dad doesn’t
need the money or the work. The reason my father goes to work is because he
likes it. He enjoys the work and the other builders. It keeps him young and
alert. He likes his boss.
Here is my analogy. If you want our Lord to bring you coffee and
doughnuts every day, if you want Him to treat you as someone special, then
here is what you want to do. The next time anyone asks you, "Why do you go
to church every Sunday? It kills half the day.” Or “Why do you follow those
strict and unpopular rules of the Catholic church?” Don’t tell him, “Because I
have to.” Tell him, “Because I want to. I like the peace I get from living this
life; I like the inner strength I get from the discipline.”
Two years ago, when my body was turning into a jellyfish because I
wasn’t getting enough exercise, I ordered an exercise program. There was a
questionnaire the company asked me to fill out when I made the order. They
wanted to know how I knew about their product, why I chose them over
thousands of other exercise programs. It had several choices, television,
internet, magazine, etc. I checked off the box that said “a friend” because that
is how I knew about product. I was having dinner one day with Fr. Bill and he
was telling me about his workout program. I told him that I was looking for a
program and wanted to know what he liked. He said, “It is really hard; that is
why they call Insanity. It may be too hard for you.” "Too hard? Just send me
the link,” I told him. Whenever I buy anything I always make sure that I fill in
the “a friend” box.
In the gospel this week, Jesus gave a short speech to His disciples. It
was special because this would be the last time He was going to talk to
them. He was about to ascend to heaven. In the short speech, He gave them
one thing to do. That is why I love our Lord. He didn’t give them a grocery
list. Only one thing: make disciples. How do you make disciples? One friend
to another.
When you are dealing with God there are two verb phrases you need to
know: “I have to,” or “I want to.” If you are fortunate enough to be one of
those who belong to the “I want to” group, then congratulations! You join the
ranks of my father who goes to work every day, loves his job and respects and
admires his boss. If this roadmap to success that I am trying to lay out for you
is getting too complicated, then all you really need to remember is one
thing: Coffee and Doughnuts.
Thursday —7:00-9:00PM
Please join Pure in Heart for our
weekly Thursday meeting
in St. Clement's Upper Room.
There will be Mass followed by
Rosary, Confession, Adoration,
a talk and discussion.
This topic this week will be
Part Two:
Becoming Virtuous in a Fallen World
We all know we should be virtuous. But how
(practically speaking) do we go about becoming
virtuous? Day to day we are inundated with
various career, leisure, and relationship choices.
How do we choose among them and decide what
our priorities should be when faced with
conflicting goals? How do we develop good
habits so that when we are confronted with
difficult choices, we have the “moral muscles”
to be able to do the right thing?
7 Habits of Highly Effective People book by
Stephen Covey helps us answer these questions
and more. Last week we discussed Habits 1-3
needed for self-mastery. This week we will
discuss Habits 4-6, practices that allow the
virtuous man to exercise his new-found personal
development to benefit his community. We will
top our discussion off with the final Habit, #7,
which advises self renewal as a means to
sustaining and enriching progress in character
development.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults -RICA Program- 2012
The RCIA is a process through which non-baptized men and women
enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by
study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants in the RCIA are known
as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they
study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church,
and receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist.
The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the
Church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the
normal way adults prepare for baptism.
