YEARS 12 & 13 (THE SIXTH FORM)
The Sixth Form is an open sixth form into which pupils of all ability are welcomed as long
as suitable courses are available.
In year 12 ‘A’ level students study an Advanced Subsidiary (A/S) course, representing the
first half of an ‘A’ Level. These A/S units are normally assessed during year 12.
Certification of the result means that the subject does not have to be continued into year
13.
The second half of the ‘A’ level course is made up of A2 units and is examined during year
13.
Sixth form students choose to study 4 A/S level subjects in year 12 and usually continue
with three of these at A2 level in year 13.
The record of success at ‘A’ Level over recent years has been very good. In 2007 the
overall pass rate (grades A-E) was 99.8% with 85.4 % obtaining grades A to C.
Consequently, a high proportion of students obtain entry to degree courses at universities
and other educational institutions throughout the United Kingdom.
KEY SKILLS
The development and application of Key Skills are essential features of government plans
for the education and training of 16-19 year olds. Qualifications based on the Key Skills
of Communication and Improving Own Learning are available to all sixth form students.
NATIONAL CERTIFICATE in BUSINESS and WELSH BACCALAUREATE
Some students return to the Sixth Form to take advantage of the successful one year
OCR National Certificate in Business combined with the Intermediate level Welsh
Baccalaureate. These courses give students the opportunity to study something new
while developing their key skills and their knowledge of Wales, Europe and the World.
