Parish Mission
Saint Ferdinand Catholic Church is a large, vibrant
parish that has a tradition of serving God’s people with
the warmth of a small parish. Inspired by the Holy
Spirit, we prayerfully seek to serve God by the way we
worship, celebrate the sacraments, witness to the
Gospel, and serve one another. We are committed to
live our Christian life as a community of hospitality,
spiritual enrichment, and service through works of
compassion, mercy, and evangelization. We are called
to proclaim, teach and model the good news of Jesus
Christ. We pledge our time, talent, and treasures for
the fulfillment of our parish mission.
Sacraments
Eucharist: Please see Mass Intentions on the

Anointing: Contact pastor before entering a hospital
for a scheduled surgery; for emergency
illness, call Rectory or Pastoral Care
Department of the Hospital.
Marriage: Please call six months in advance for an
appointment with a priest. Marriage
Preparation Classes are required. Please

Baptism: Adults: Through Rite of Christian

Today’s Readings
First Reading — Eliakim is destined by God to be a
father to those who live in Jerusalem (Isaiah 22:19-23).
Psalm — Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the

Second Reading — How deep are the riches and the
wisdom and the knowledge of God! (Romans 11:33-36).
Gospel — Jesus asked the disciples, “Who do you say
that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Christ”

10 th Annual Pilgrimage

This year our pilgrimage
to the Paul VI Pastoral
Center in Wheeling, West
Virginia is October 6. The
cost is $40.00 per person
and includes a day of prayer
and Mass celebrated by Fr.
Scott, lunch, coach
transportation and snacks on the way
home. The bus will board at 8:45 am in
front of Oldenski Hall and leave by 9:00
am. We will return by 6:00 pm. Please

Family Faith and Fun
Is your family ready for some faithfilled
fun? Beginning in September,
St. Ferdinand's Adult Education is hosting
Family Faith and Fun gatherings to foster
Catholic traditions and promote family
values. For our kickoff, we welcome
Fr. Joe Freedy, Director of Vocations in
Pittsburgh, to tell about his transition
from a Division I college quarterback to a
diocesan priest! Then we're gonna play
football with Fr. Joe! Please mark your
calendars for Sunday, September 18,
from 1:00-3:00 pm, in Oldenski Hall.

Roman Catholic Church.
The process of becoming
a Catholic is called The
Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and is for nonbaptized
and baptized persons of
Christian denominations. If you or
someone you know is interested in
becoming a Catholic, please contact
Barbara McCarthy at 724.776.1357.
Inquiry meetings are designed to help
candidates obtain answers to questions
about the Church to help discern the
extent of his/her call to become a
Catholic. The RCIA process starts in
September and comes to a completion
with the reception of the sacraments of
initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and
Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil. RCIA
meets Wednesdays 7:30–9:30 pm in the
Upper Room.
Catechists Needed
St. Ferdinand Religious Education is in need of catechists for the
2011 – 2012 Catechetical year for grades 1 thru 7. We are looking for
faith-filled persons who are willing to share their faith with our young
people. We supply the catechists with guide books, training, and the
support you need. Classes meet at the following times:

Monday: Grade 6 6:00 - 7:30 pm - Autumn Hill
Tuesday: Grade 4 & 5 4:15 - 5:30 pm
Tuesday: Grade 4 5:45 - 7:00 pm

Classes begin the week of Sept. 25, 2011. Volunteering now gives
you time to examine the textbook and prepare in a relaxed manner.

Religious Education registration now being accepted
Registration forms are now being accepted at the Religious
Education Office. Registration forms for students new to the Religious
Education program are available in the Religious Education Office, in the
Rectory, and on the St. Ferdinand website at www.stferd.org. Call the
Religious Education Office at 724.776.9177 if you have any questions.
Religious Education for Grades 1-7 begin the week of September 25.
Grade 8 classes begin September 18, Family Centered begins October 6,
and Pre 3/4 & Kindergarten begins October 2.
Home-site Religious Education
A Home-site Religious Education Class is a small group of
students learning in a relaxed, comfortable environment in homes.
Additional homes and teachers are needed for sixth and
seventh grade. All materials are provided, and our teachers are
trained and supported throughout the year. “Let the Lord guide you
always.” (Isaiah 58:11) To volunteer or for additional information,
please call the Religious Education Office at 724.776.9177 ext. 308 or
email bunny@stferd.org. A list of home-site classes can be found
on the website at www.stferd.org.
Parish Renewal
The Freedom to Believe
This renewal, with Fr. Simeon Gallagher, will consider the great
challenge of growth in faith. Using the insights of the scriptures, twelvestep
recovery programs and the writings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, this
theme of freedom and growth will be explored each evening at 7:00 pm
in the church.

God. Just as rain and sun are essential elements to successful gardening, the
challenges and gifts in our lives also provide us with more bountiful blessings.

Welcome to Everyone
Welcome to all who attended Mass
today, especially those who are guests and
those who have traveled distances to be
here. Thank you for celebrating with us. May
God’s blessings be with you always.
Youth Ministry
All 6 th through 12 th grade students and recent
grads are invited to attend our annual “End of
Summer Pool Party.” It will take place at the
Seven Fields pool on Castle Creek Drive. Meet at
the clubhouse at 7:30 pm for food, games, and
swimming. Our night will end at 10:30 pm. For

Service Dinner
This year is the 10 th anniversary of the 9-11
disaster. While we will never forget those who lost
their lives, we also would like to celebrate the men
and women who work hard every day to protect us.
The Youth Ministry will sponsor a dinner to honor
our community police officers, fire fighters, ambulance crew, their office
personnel, and families, and anyone from our parish that has a loved
one on active duty in the military. The date is Sunday, September 11, in
Oldenski Hall beginning at 6:30 pm.
Help is needed to set up and cook and assist with serving and clean
up too. If you are in the 6 th through 12 th grade and would like to help,
please sign up on the bulletin board beside the Youth Office. If you have
questions, contact Andrea at 724.776.1920.
CW Kickoff
The team has a great night planned
for our 2011-12 CROSSWALK Sr. High
kickoff. It will take place on Sunday,
September 18, from 7:00-8:45 pm. Join
us for food, fun, games, and information
on all of the upcoming educational nights
and events. Parents are welcome to
attend this night. If you have any
questions please call the Youth Office at

Give It Away
The annual “Give It Away” night is
scheduled for September 25. This year’s
theme is the “Oh Baby Edition”, so we are
holding a baby shower. All high school
guys and girls are invited to come. Our
lesson will focus on respecting all life and
we will collect baby items to donate to
Angel’s Place. So start buying diapers,
wipes, infant/pre-school toys, baby food,
baby juice, and baby cereal to donate.

The Gleaner’s Food Bank is sponsored
by St. Ferdinand and serves over 100
families each month. Items can be placed

Cookout & Bean Bag Contest
The Men’s Club meets this
month on Thursday,
August 25, at 6:30 pm in
Small Hall. The meeting
will start with a cookout,
with lots of great food, so
come hungry. After the cookout, there

Contest, with prizes awarded to the
winners. All men of the parish are invited.

St. Ferdinand Parish is in the
midst of a Capital Campaign to raise
funds to build the new Parish Life
Center. We are excited to kick off

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
The Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner ministry will continue in
September. The basis of the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Program,”
is that a group of people go to another parishioner’s home for dinner
one Saturday a month and they are only given the address, phone
number and what to bring, i.e., appetizer, salad, vegetable, or
dessert. The size of the dinner is based on the number of people that
each host can accommodate. You do not have to host a dinner to be

AARP Defensive Driving Course for Seniors
An eight hour introductory course is Tuesday September 6 and
13 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Small Hall. A four hour refresher
course is Thursday, September 29 from 9:00 to 1:00 pm also in the
Small Hall. This refresher course is designed for individuals who have
completed the Introductory eight hour course within the last 3 years.
Both courses are designed to improve the defensive driving of
individuals 50 years of age and older with the overall goal of having
seniors drive safer and longer. Upon completion of the classroom
course, participants are awarded a certificate that entitles them to a
minimum of 5% discount on their auto insurance. Administrative costs
for the course in $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. For

St. Alphonsus Harvest Home
Dinner and Festival
St. Alphonsus Parish in Wexford will
hold their annual Harvest Home Dinner
and Festival on Sunday, September 11.
This delicious family-style home cooked
meal includes a choice of roasted chicken
or ham with potatoes and gravy, six side
dishes, beverage and a slice of
homemade pie. Dinner prices are $10.00
for adults and $6.00 for children. Takeout
meals are an additional $2.00.
Come and enjoy the Country Store,
Chinese Auction, games of chance, and
various raffles. Children will enjoy the
giant slide, an inflatable castle, jousting,
Winston Whale, and additional games and
treats. The festivities begin at 12:30 pm
and conclude with the raffle drawings at
6:30 pm. There are free trolley shuttles
to the St. Alphonsus grounds running
every 15 minutes from Northway
Christian Church on Route 19 beginning
at 1:00 pm and ending at 7:30 pm.
