Dear Friends of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>,<br />
I am truly honored and blessed to have the opportunity to serve as<br />
president of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong> for the upcoming year. I would first like<br />
to say a special thanks to Jeanette Shemo who served the <strong>Center</strong> as<br />
President over the past three years. The <strong>Center</strong> faced many challenges<br />
over this period and due to her persistent dedication and commitment<br />
we were able to complete our 25 th year of serving the needs of the<br />
community of the near west side of Cleveland.<br />
During <strong>2011</strong> we continued to refocus our energies on our two core<br />
programs, the after school program for children and our shower<br />
program for homeless adults. Through the generous support of the<br />
Greater Cleveland community as well as the dedication of our many volunteers and staff we were able<br />
to reach out to over fifty children through the after school program and provide homeless men and<br />
women with showers and clean clothing on a daily basis.<br />
As we enter our 26 th year we face additional financial challenges in a difficult economic period. We<br />
count on the continued generosity of the community and our volunteers to enable us to administer our<br />
programs to our clients. Again we will focus our efforts on our core programs and look for ways to<br />
collaborate with other agencies to meet the needs of our clients. We are excited to begin the next 25<br />
years of our ministry and hope you will continue to help us fulfill our mission to “Empower the<br />
Individual, Nurture the Family and Build the Community”.<br />

Dearest Friends of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>,<br />
I cannot believe another year has passed! My mother always said that the<br />
older you get the faster time flies by. And was she ever correct! We just<br />
finished our 25 th year of operation. A wonderful gift was given to this<br />
community when volunteers from <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> Church purchased and<br />
renovated this <strong>Center</strong>, and then helped to keep it open all of these many<br />
years. Thanks to you all!<br />
We ended this year with a goodbye to our good friend and<br />
wonderful Board President, Jeanette Shemo. Jeanette was an excellent<br />
leader and helped guide us through some difficult times—and was able to<br />
celebrate many good times as well. To her, goes a huge Thank You! Not to<br />
worry though, we did not let her get far—she is now the Board Treasurer.<br />
We welcome into the position of Board President a long-time member and dedicated supporter of<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, <strong>St</strong>eve Switaj. <strong>St</strong>eve has been on <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s board since 1999. He is the Chief<br />
Financial Officer at Three D Metals. <strong>St</strong>eve brings a wealth of knowledge and a true love for <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong><br />
<strong>Center</strong>. I know he will help lead us through whatever challenges lie ahead. <strong>St</strong>eve is a wonderful person,<br />
and I truly look forward to our time ahead together.<br />
Our decision to focus on core services has definitely paid off for <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. Our Shower<br />
Program and After School Program are stronger than ever. Last year we provided 5,678 showers to<br />
homeless men and women. We expanded our service to include a Nurse Clinic & Mental Health Services<br />
one morning each week, and strengthened our work with Care Alliance Outreach Services. We also<br />
entered into collaboration with <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> Church and a fairly new agency called the Metanoia Project.<br />
All of these partnerships have allowed us to be a part of getting the homeless off the street and into<br />
permanent housing. That is what our Shower Program should be doing, and I am very proud of our<br />
accomplishments in this area.<br />
Our After School Program continues to do excellent work with the children from our neighborhood.<br />
The Reading Buddy Program remains a mainstay of our work with children. We see the results over<br />
time with children who are so far behind academically. Last year we invested in curriculum and staff training<br />
to help our children develop social skills which are sorely lacking in many we serve. We installed<br />
“Peaceful Playgrounds” in our parking lot and purchased “<strong>St</strong>op, Think, Do”. Each child now participates in<br />
“friendship club” where they learn to settle disagreements. This coming year, we plan to focus on<br />
parenting skills. Parents who learn good parenting skills will certainly impact their children in a positive<br />
manner.<br />
I could never end without a strong shout-out to all of our volunteers! You make us tick. Without<br />
volunteers working to help with Reading Buddies, Homework, Clothing Ministry, Family Nights, and<br />
Fundraisers, we could not exist. Your are what keeps our wheels turning. Saying thank you is never<br />
enough, but that is all I know how to say.<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong> (SMC) is a family and community resource<br />
center. SMC was founded in 1985 to extend the outreach of the<br />
140-year-old <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> Church through formal programs and<br />
services. Since that time, SMC has been serving its surrounding<br />
Old Angle and Ohio City neighborhoods, a community historically<br />
living below the poverty level. Early programs included tutoring<br />
for youth, services for the homeless, and meals for families. The<br />
same type of programming continues to this day.<br />
Adult Programs<br />
Shower Program: The Shower Program has grown over the past year with additional services offered,<br />
including a nurse clinic, mental health clinic and a joint program with the Metanoia Project to provide<br />
needed services such as overnight stays during the winter months and assistance to prepare for permanent<br />
housing. In the past year, SMC provided 5,678 showers. SMC provides clothes washing three times per<br />
week and provides bus tickets for medical and benefits appointments as additional and essential services.<br />
Last winter, 12 homeless individuals were placed in permanent housing as a result of the collaboration<br />
between SMC and Metanoia. The Shower Program has responded well to the needs that homeless men<br />
and women bring to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong> when they arrive each morning to clean their bodies. Those men<br />
and women find a comfortable atmosphere where they are encouraged to talk about themselves and their<br />
needs as well as sports, current events and whatever is happening around them. SMC has added needed<br />
services over time that address the basic human need to feel accepted and worthwhile.<br />
Grants from the <strong>St</strong>. Mary Seminary Outreach Fund, the Castele Family Foundation & the Sisters of Charity<br />
Foundation of Cleveland provided essential support for the Shower Program in <strong>2010</strong>-11.<br />
Sewing with Friends: Adults gather weekly to learn the basics of sewing and share a meal. Sewing<br />
machines, fabric and patterns are provided.<br />
Soup & God: This twice-monthly program is for men in transition to meet over lunch and discuss the<br />
blessings and obstacles in their lives.<br />
Health Clinic: SMC hosts two health clinics for adults without access to health care services. Three times<br />
a month (Monday evenings) there is a free clinic staffed by registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and<br />
doctors who volunteer their time. One morning per week there<br />
is a free health clinic staffed by a Care Alliance nurse.<br />
Additional Adult Services: SMC services to adults include<br />
referrals to shelters, mental health providers, housing<br />
programs, meal programs, housing assistance and substance<br />
abuse programs; assistance with income tax preparation,<br />
assistance securing birth certificates, legal identification and<br />
furniture; and hosting 12-step meetings.
Children’s Programs<br />
After School Program: Forty-three students in K-8 enrolled<br />
in the After School Program (ASP) and Youth Club (YC) during<br />
the <strong>2010</strong>-11 school year. Our Reading Buddies once again<br />
worked one-on-one with students in grades K-3 one hour each<br />
week to review literacy concepts. <strong>St</strong>udents also participated in<br />
literacy programming that included peer tutoring, computer<br />
time, and literacy lab. <strong>St</strong>udents were pre- and post-tested to<br />
determine effectiveness of the literacy programming. The<br />
results of testing showed a 58% increase in at least one of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy<br />
Skills.<br />
To help youth build appropriate social skills, 43 students participated<br />
in <strong>St</strong>op, Think, Do curriculum. <strong>St</strong>udents engaged in 10 weeks of the<br />
social skills program which included getting to know people’s<br />
similarities and differences, identifying and communicating feelings<br />
and problem-solving. <strong>St</strong>udents maintained weekly behavior and<br />
attendance charts to evaluate results. A review of all participants<br />
shows that 42% maintained or showed improvement on their<br />
behavior charts. <strong>St</strong>op, Think, Do has become a standard part of the<br />
<strong>Center</strong>’s curriculum.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents in Youth Club had an opportunity to impact their<br />
community through volunteering and field trips. Six students, grades<br />
6-8, were enrolled in the program. <strong>St</strong>udents participated in 4 field<br />
trips and completed 357 hours of service, which included 333 hours<br />
of peer tutoring and 24 hours of planning and implementation of a<br />
Field Day for the younger children.<br />
In May, the <strong>Center</strong> hosted its first Safety Town. Thirty children<br />
attended with parents or older siblings. They<br />
saw a video on gun safety, practiced crossing the street and learned about bike<br />
safety. The event ended with hamburgers and hot dogs. Special thanks to<br />
Commander Sulzer of the 2nd District for his help. We hope to make Safety Town<br />
an annual event.<br />
Summer Camp: Fifty children enrolled in this year’s Summer Camp, which<br />
focused on swimming skills & literacy. Thirty-four children in grades 1-5<br />
completed swim lessons and 99% advanced at least 1 level. They also took part<br />
in important water safety skills classes. O*H*I*O Masters Swim Club provided<br />
goggles and medals for the program.<br />
Grants from the following foundations helped the <strong>Center</strong> provide children’s<br />
programming in <strong>2010</strong>-11: Abington Foundation, AHS Foundation, Eva L. &<br />
Joseph M. Bruening Foundation, Ginn Foundation, The Giant Eagle Foundation, Ida B. Wells Foundation,<br />
John Milton Costello Foundation, Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland, The Murphy Family<br />
Foundation.
Family Programs<br />
Family Activity Night: Family Activity Night attendance is growing<br />
monthly. Families share dinner and participate in a variety of activities<br />
designed to engage them as a family unit. Family art projects, cookie<br />
decorating and our popular Trunk-or-Treat Halloween event provide<br />
families with a fun and safe outlet to spend time with one another.<br />
Clothing Ministry: Every third Saturday, clothing and small household<br />
items are distributed to families in need.
Holidays at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />
The holiday season is special at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. Neighborhood families are invited to<br />
participate in a Gratitude Dinner at Thanksgiving and a Christmas Potluck in December.<br />
Children shop for gifts for their family members thanks to donations from the community in our<br />
Children’s Christmas Boutique. Many in the Greater Cleveland community support our families<br />
through Adopt-A-Family. A breakfast for the homeless is prepared here on Christmas Eve.<br />

Special Events<br />
The 18th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong> Golf Tournament was held at<br />
Lakewood Country Club on Monday, September 20,<br />
<strong>2010</strong>. Over 100 golfers enjoyed a buffet lunch, a<br />
round of golf at this premier course and dinner<br />
provided by Sokolowski’s. The 18th <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Malachi</strong> Golf Tournament raised over $28,000 for<br />
the <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

Soup for the Soul <strong>2011</strong> was held at Browns <strong>St</strong>adium on Thursday, April 7,<br />
<strong>2011</strong>. This year’s event honored the founders of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Malachi</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, Anthony<br />
DiNardo, Reverend Paul Hritz, Joe Mohar and Anthony Rego with the <strong>2011</strong> Sr.<br />
Michael Marie Griffin Anchor Award. Jon Loufman of 19 Action News was our<br />
Master of Ceremonies. Twenty restaurants provided soup, 18 celebrity servers<br />
were on hand to serve and chat with over 300 guests. Soup for the Soul <strong>2011</strong><br />
raised over $38,000 for the <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

hosted by O*H*I*O Masters Swim Club.<br />

On our cover: Kobe, a third grader, has been<br />
attending the After School Program since he was in<br />
kindergarten. He has an older brother and sister who are<br />
in the program as well. Kobe is a Cub Scout who loves<br />
