Maths Challenge
On Wednesday 30 May, Year
6 children took part in a
Maths Challenge in the
Senior School.
This morning we took part in the
Year 6 Maths Challenge in the
Hallam Hall where we had ‘hard’
questions for a brain crunching
experience. The final challenge was
a race against time – the heat was
on, the pressure was rising and we
all had a blast.
Dev Vaish
Our favourite part of the day was
the ‘Pairs Relay’ where you had to
run between partners answering
questions that became quite tricky.
Towards the end of the Maths
Challenge the questions were
impossible – we still really enjoyed
it and loved the challenge.
Y6 Cycle Racing
Capitalising on the visit by
Olympic cyclist Rob Hayles,
Year 6 pupils were given the
opportunity, on Friday 14 May,
to try out cycle racing for
themselves.
Joe Malik, a British cycling
coach, came in with bikes to
run some cycling sessions on
the playground. Pupils learnt
how to race bikes as well as to
use them safely. Skills covered
included using the gears, how
to use the brakes safely and
even how to dismount whilst
the bike is still moving.
Mr M Johnson
The whole morning was exciting
and challenging from start to
finish. We were put into teams and
had a variety of activities from
group challenges to individual
relays. Everyone had a great time
but we all felt slightly anxious
because the tasks were quite
difficult.
Nitin Devanathan, Lauren Hall
and Faye Sanders.
Thank you to the Senior
School staff involved, and the
terrified parents who kindly
came to help and practise
their maths skills.
Shadow Science
Ailsa and I drew around each
other’s shadows in our science
lesson. The shadows were caused
by us blocking the light in the
courtyard. We had to make
different shapes. My favourite
shape was when we had to curl
up into a ball. Some shadows
were long, like the standing up
one and some were short, like
the ball shape.
IAPS Athletics
The Junior School athletes took
part in the IAPS championships
on Thursday 24 May at
Macclesfield track. The weather
was beautiful and the complete
opposite of the conditions
athletes had become used to this
season.
Outstanding results came from
Joe Davidson who won the U11
1500 metres race and Pippa
Crook who won the girls’ U11
1500 metres race. Robert Sykes
and Caitlin Barker won their
respective U12 Shot Putt
competitions. Charlotte Gover
ran in second at the U11 girls’
100 metres, Annabel Tordoff
came third in the U12 Long
Jump and Kitty Taylor came
third in the U12 High Jump
event. Well done to all of the
children who competed. Many of
the athletes scored new personal
bests and it was a fantastic
experience to compete on the
track at Macclesfield.
Healthy Hearts
The Year 6 children were lucky
enough to be invited to a
Healthy Hearts seminar at the
Midland Hotel in Manchester on
Tuesday morning. After a fifteen
minute introd uction by
consultant cardiologist, Dr Sarah
Clarke, the children took part in
various activities. Performance
of a task under pressure, heart
scanning, blood pressure
monitoring and making a
nutritional, sports drink were
among some of the activities run
by a sport scientist from John
Moores University in Liverpool.
The children were then
addressed by Rebecca Romero,
the Olympic gold medal winner,
who gave a motivational talk
about her experiences at the last
Olympic Games.
The aim of the activities was to
exercise in a challenging,
activities were designed to
demonstrate to pupils how
science is translated from theory
into practice with the aim that
students will understand the
principles of physical activity and
nutrition, which they can
incorporate into their daily lives.
Did you know that a whale’s heart is
the size of a truck and beats six times
per minute? A hummingbird’s heart
beats 1600 times per minute. These
were some of the amazing facts we
learnt. – Oliver Helme
I especially loved the canoe rowing
machine and the ‘How well do you cope
under pressure’ golf activity. There was
always something to do and I learnt so
much. – Lauren Hall
AJIS Piano Festival
Monday 21 May saw a new
entry in the AJIS diary; for the
first time a piano festival was
held for talented pianists from
around the North West.
The Grange School have hosted
AJIS orchestral events in the
past but pianists can be rather
isolated in this respect, so we
were delighted to put forward
Isobel Croft, Year 6, as our
representative. The sixteen
pianists from various schools
spent an afternoon playing
duets, solos and a team piece
and getting to know each other.
They then treated an audience
of friends, family and teachers
to a delightful evening. Isobel
impressed us all with her solo
item, a piece which she had
composed herself; evocative
music entitled ‘Where the Wind
