The Stockport Grammar School GOLF DAY We are very proud of the achievements of Stockport Grammar School’s pupils. Girls and boys join us from local maintained primary and independent preparatory schools. As well as securing outstanding academic qualifications through learning and working together, the rich extra curricular life of the school encourages children to develop their talents to the full. In these pages we have featured just a few examples of the many ways in which our pupils have taken the opportunity to excel. Andrew Chicken, Headmaster We want to invest in our pupils and provide them with the most up-to-date facilities whilst keeping our fee levels as low as possible. However, we are not a wealthy school and have no significant endowments, nor do we receive any assistance from the state. The Bursary Fund enables bright local children whose families cannot afford the fees to benefit from the education we offer. Because every child makes a unique and special contribution to the health and vigour of our school, each child benefits personally from the diverse backgrounds and experiences of their friends. Opportunity should not be restricted by means and so your support for the fund is greatly appreciated by the School, and by those individual children who benefit. The Stockport Grammar School Bursary Fund The profit we raise today goes directly to the Stockport Grammar School Bursary Fund. It is our goal to offer as many local children as possible the opportunity to come to the school regardless of their ability to pay. In the words of Emily Dove (OS 2010), one of the school’s former bursary holders: ‘If the Bursary Scheme was not in place, I would simply not have had the opportunity to attend SGS. I would have missed out on numerous experiences; a field trip to Anglesey, an incredible Alpine mountaineering expedition, playing hockey for the senior team, captaining the swimming team, playing the flute in school bands and taking part in so many other extra curricular activities. The high quality teaching also enabled me to fulfil my potential and gain a place at Birmingham Medical School.’
Opportunity and Achievement Oxbridge success Twelve members of the Upper Sixth are celebrating offers from Oxford and Cambridge. Last year SGS was identified by the Sutton Trust as one of ten schools nationally having a significantly higher acceptance rate to university than other institutions with similar A Level results. Oliver! wows sell-out audiences After playing to four full houses Oliver! closed to rave reviews. The production brought together nearly 200 pupils from across the school. Months of preparation and dedication proved worthwhile culminating in excellent, professional performances. A day in the life of a Viking Junior School Year 4 pupils were transported back to the Dark Ages and Tudor times on a visit to Murton Park’s living history village. Dressed in clothing from the period, the children took part in pottery, fieldwork, housework and soldier training essential to maintaining and defending a Viking settlement. As Tudors they learnt to write with traditional quill and ink, dipped candles and created room fragrances.
