AMERICAN RED CROSS PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON
Gulf Coast Chapter Seeks Volunteers, Encourages Community Preparedness
The American Red Cross
Mississippi Gulf Coast
Chapter is preparing for
Hurricane Season 2008.
Executive Director Bill

Director Bob Beebe
have met with the Emergency
Management Agency
Directors from across the
tri-county area to review
their plan of action.
Should a hurricane strike
the Mississippi Gulf Coast,
the Red Cross will assist in
opening and staffing emergency
shelters and providing
provisions to Gulf Coast
residents.
The Red Cross is seeking
individuals to become
trained in Red Cross disaster
response protocols to
serve as volunteers during a
disaster. The following
training courses will be provided
for community members
interested in serving
during a disaster:
Fulfilling Our Mission:
Monday, June 23rd (5pm
to 8:30pm) This basic, entry
level course introduces
potential disaster volunteers
and members of other local
agencies to the role of the
Red Cross in the community’s
actions in preparing
for, responding to and recovering
from emergencies
and disasters.
Shelter Operations:
Thursday, June 12th (5pm
to 8:30pm); Thursday
June 26th (5pm to 8:30
pm) Participants will learn
Red Cross policies and procedures
for setting up, running
and closing a shelter
during a disaster.
Emergency Response Vehicle,
Ready, Set,
Roll: Saturday June 28th
(9am to 5pm) This basic
level Disaster Services
course prepares Red Cross
employees and volunteers
to operate an Emergency
Response Vehicle and its
equipment safely and effectively
to meet feeding and
other service needs of the
people affected by a disaster.

the Chapter office, at 4514

The Red Cross recommends having at least two weeks’ worth of
supplies at home and to keep a smaller kit in the trunk of your car.

A three-to-five day supply of water (one gallon per person,
per day) and ready-to-eat non-perishable foods, such as tuna

of extra batteries
A first aid kit and reference guide
Prescription and non-prescription medication items
Copies of important documents, including birth certificates,
insurance policies and social security cards
Cash. ATMs and credit cards may not work
Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members
A change of clothes for everyone, including long-sleeved
shirts, long pants and sturdy footwear
One blanket or sleeping bag per person
Emergency tools, including tools to turn off utilities

62 Young Men Graduate From St Stanislaus
Sixty-two young men received
their high school diplomas
during the St. Stanislaus
College commencement
exercises on Saturday, May
24, at Our Lady of the Gulf
Catholic Church in Bay St.
Louis. The conferral of diplomas
and the presentation of a
number of graduation awards
to members of the class followed
a Baccalaureate Mass,
which was celebrated by
Archbishop Thomas Rodi,
Apostolic Administrator of
the Diocese of Biloxi.
Honors Diplomas and medallions
were presented to
Stephen Allard, Evan Cranford,
Chris Dobson, Ike Keel,
Ben Leiker and Jourdan Nicaud.
The Hancock County Chamber
of Commerce Award was
presented to Scott Zimmerman
in recognition of his
scholarship and character.
Evan Cranford received The
Scholar-Athlete Award in
recognition of excellence in
both scholarly and athletic
endeavors and for lettering in
at least two varsity sports.
Josh Shaw was named The
Jeanne Simon Award recipient
for being an unheralded
influence for good on the St.
Stanislaus College community.
The St. Stanislaus Alumni
Association Award was presented
to Stephen Allard in
recognition for his demonstration
of a concern for his
fellow man through projects
involving the corporal and
spiritual works of mercy.
The American Legion Award
was given by the Clement R.
Bontemps, Post #139 of The
American Legion to Sam
Goggins in recognition of his
service to his community as
well as his demonstration of
the high qualities of honor,
courage, scholarship, leadership,
service, companionship
and character.
The Conduct Award for a
Resident Student was given
to Robert Parkinson in recognition
of his whole-hearted
cooperation, which has been
a source of inspiration and
good example to the entire
student body.
The Character Award for a
Resident Student was presented
to Baba Dabo, for exemplifying
such traits of
character as maturity, sincerity,
dependability, stability,
cooperation, courage, and
respect.
Character Cups were presented
to both a resident and
day student who have taken
responsibility for their own
holistic education and who
contribute by word and example
to the creation of a
healthy environment for their
peers. In addition to qualities
such as honesty, integrity,
dependability, and courage,
an SSC Character Cup recipient
is also a young man who
takes the Gospel mandate to
serve others to heart. Tae
Cho was the recipient of the
Resident Student Character
Cup, and Jourdan Nicaud
was presented the Character
Cup for a Day Student.
The President’s Award was
presented to Evan Cranford
in recognition of the qualities
of leadership, responsibility,
initiative, manners and stability.
Stephen Allard was recognized
as the class Salutatorian,
and Evan Cranford was
recognized as the class Valedictorian.
