WEATHER
REPORT
Until quite recently,
new technology was
expensive, but things have changed.
Although the price of first-generation
products used to make it difficult, if not
impossible, for small businesses to take a
chance on an untested product, many
technology manufacturers, driven by a
post-recession need for cash and lots of
competition, are bringing products to
market at lower-than-ever prices. Now
inexpensive technology is available to
help you cut your costs, boost your
productivity and, most importantly,
optimise your profits. Here is a roundup
of some of the latest trends.
Storing it in the clouds
Cloud computing is the delivery of
computing as a service rather than as a
product, whereby shared resources,
software and information are provided to
computers and other devices as a utility
(like the electricity grid) over the Internet.
Cloud computing provides computation,
software applications, data access, data
management and storage resources
without requiring cloud users to know the
location and other details of the
computing infrastructure. It is of
particular use as a way of backing up and
storing data. It allows you to combine
office, mobile, Web-based and even
home-based storage options to achieve
near automatic caching of data on
everything from your smart phone to your
film collection. Set yourself up with a
cloud and you will be able to both store
material and share critical files with your
co-workers, staff, suppliers and
customers.
Printing without a PC
Years ago, before departing on a business
trip, I used to cram my suitcase with
documents that I thought I might need.
Nowadays, I simply upload them to my
iPhone or iPad. If I need a copy while on
my travels, I arrange to print them at my
hotel, a local photocopy shop or
whichever business I am visiting.
This is thanks, of course, to the fact that
so many printers are Wi-Fi-enabled these
days. You can now stop packing that
paper…
At the touch of a finger
New technology means that desktop
computers, printers and more can all be
managed by the touch of a finger. And it
barely costs anything. A touch-controlled
monitor that could be used to create, for
instance, a low-cost interactive kiosk can
be purchased for under £300. Look for
something called the Viewsonic VX 2258
if you are interested.
Zero Client PCs
Tech savvy companies that need more
desktop computers but don’t want to
spend big for the firepower should
consider a different breed of machine:
Zero Client PCs. These cheap, small units
are, quite frankly, weaklings on the
processing front – until you network them
to a full-powered computer nearby. Why
spend money on lots of individual hi-spec
computers when one will do?
Voice control
Voice recognition tools have come on in
leaps and bounds, allowing you to control
all your technology, including phones and
computers, by the sound of your voice.
An excellent way to speed up your
productivity.
Automatic writing
Believe it or not, there is now a piece of
software that will take a random series of
thoughts, numbers and words and turn
them into plain-English statements. The
company is called Automated Insights. It
specialises in something called
‘automated authoring’.
New business ideas
The old ones are the best
As regular readers will be aware, I have
always loved the idea of taking a product
that no one wants and turning it into
something profitable. One sector where I
feel there are huge opportunities to
achieve this is that of second-hand
technology, and in particular second-hand
computers. Even in these recessionary
times, people are changing their personal
computers at an alarming speed. By the
same token, companies also upgrade their
whole computer systems with remarkable
frequency. The result? An awful lot of
second-hand PCs get scrapped. Is there a
market for them? Yes, there is. Some
companies buy them, break them up and
recycle the parts. Others ship them
overseas to developing countries, where
they get refurbished and sold. But I think
that there is an even bigger and more
lucrative market to be had closer to home.
There are so many students, consumers
and small businesses who need better
technology and yet either can’t afford it or
end up spending more than they have to
because they don’t see that a second-hand
computer would do them just as well.
There are probably enormous numbers of
students who would like to get extra
experience in the IT sector. I propose
buying up second-hand PCs and repairing
and upgrading them using student labour
and then selling them to other students,
consumers and small businesses. The
idea, I have to tell you, is not entirely my
own. There is a firm called Inquo doing
this in a place called West Jordan, Utah. It
isn’t, actually, reselling the second-hand
computers: it is giving them away. But the
concept is almost the same and you may
like to look at the company’s website to
get a feel for the potential of this
particular business (http://inquo.com/).
Online pawn
I have written in this column many times
about the new wave of pawnshops, such
as Cash Converters. Now they seem to be
moving online. Recently, I came across
Pawngo, an online pawnshop. Just like
any traditional licensed pawnbroker,
Pawngo secures loans against items of
value or buys the items outright. Users
enter a description of their item and
Pawngo’s team of experts makes an offer
based on an estimated resale value. If the
user accepts the offer, he or she provides
proof of identity and ships the item to the
company’s Denver headquarters. Once it
is received, the money is automatically
transferred to the user’s account. Eighty
thousand people a month visit the Pawngo
site. Furthermore, since its launch in
2010, it has paid out nearly $2 million to
clients in 46 states. Loans range from
$250 to $50,000. The average is about
$1,800. The company charges interest of
3% to 6% depending on the item and the
size of the loan. Towards the end of last
year, Pawngo also launched a smallbusiness
lending programme that can
make up to $1 million available in 24
hours with no credit check based on the
resale value of the client’s merchandise.
Interestingly, Pawngo requires no
principal payments until the end of the
loan period.
iFLY with my little eye
Here is a bizarre concept. It is called iFLY
(www.iflysfbay.com), a franchise that
operates high-powered vertical wind
tunnels in which users can practise
skydiving techniques or just bop around
on a column of air. It is not a cheap
concept to launch. Indeed, it could cost
you as much as £5 million. On the other
hand, iFLY has proved so successful in
America that the original operator
reckons that if it is located in the right
place one could almost keep it busy a full
24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The
only overseas franchisee is in Singapore.
Poo Prints
There is no getting round what this
business does: Poo Prints uses DNA
samples to track down dogs that have –
um – done their doggy business where
they shouldn’t have. Why would you want
to know what dog has produced which
waste matter? Well, the company that
came up with the concept signs contracts
with community associations, property
management companies and local
governments, hoping to keep their local
parks and pavements clear of pet waste.
Poo Prints then collects DNA swabs from
all the dogs in the neighbourhood and
Biopet adds them to a database. The next
time an unexpected present is found, a
small sample is sent to Biopet, where it is
compared on the database, the culprit is
revealed and the owner is given a fine. Of
course, until recently, people didn’t realise
how bad dog waste was. It is a huge
health and environmental issue. This
looks like a growth business.
Seniors Helping Seniors
If you are looking for an interesting
business to start or, possibly, a franchise
business to buy into, consider Seniors
Helping Seniors. Now twelve years old,
the company has over 100 franchisees in
the United States. As its name suggests,
Seniors Helping Seniors is a care service
for elderly people who want to carry on
living in their own home. The big
difference is that the carers also tend to be
somewhat older. Anyway, you can quickly
learn all about the business by visiting
www.seniorshelpingseniors.com.
Yucky name, brilliant idea
The name of the product I am about to tell
you about is rather odd… some would say
catchy; I would say rubbish. On the other
hand, I have a feeling that its inventor, a
2
woman called Brandy Jans, has come up
with something really clever. It is a cream
that helps heal scratches, insect bites and
other skin imperfections and at the same
time conceals their existence. This idea
hasn’t managed to get any sort of traction
yet, but I feel it could have huge
international potential. Although, to be
candid, I think I would change its name.
Oh, what is the name? Boo-Boo Cover
Up.
The Urban Cultivator
I am afraid to say for those of us of a
certain age the phrase ‘hydroponic
growing’ means only one thing:
marijuana. However, hydroponic growing
has huge profitable and entirely legal
potential that doesn’t involve illicit
substances. One company that has seized
this opportunity is called Urban
Cultivator. Started in 2010, the company
offers the ultimate growing unit that
allows professional and amateur chefs to
produce micro greens, herbs, flowers and
vegetables in their own kitchen. Its indoor
hydroponic growing appliances fit under
a kitchen counter and are, given their
potential, remarkably inexpensive.
Time to go 3D
Has the time come to ditch your digital
camera? Last year, printer giant Hewlett
Packard launched the TopShot, a Webenabled
laser printer that doubles as a 3D
scanner capable of capturing high-quality
images of small objects. And while it isn’t
perfect, it certainly makes it a lot easier to
produce product photographs. Basically,
for about £300, the TopShot can scan any
object that fits inside the printer’s 8.5” by
11” scanning area. The image is captured
with a digital camera mounted on a
pivoting stand. Prop up the stand, place
your object in the scanning area, click a
few buttons and the scanner goes to work
taking photographs from multiple angles.
Users can then print the resulting image
or send it to a personal computer. To the
best of my knowledge, Hewlett Packard
has managed to produce the first fully
capable 3D Web printer that also scans,
prints and copies. It isn’t quick – to be
honest, it will take you about a minute to
set up, scan and capture each image – but
nevertheless it seems to me that this
product has all sorts of potential for
anyone interested in setting up a small
marketing business.
Boudoir photography
If you are a photographer – or if you
would like to own a photography business
– then the hottest new photography niche
market is known as ‘boudoir’. More
sensual than erotic – basically it is about
photographing women – some in lingerie,
others nude – with the objective of
producing images that are tasteful and
glamorous. I think it goes without saying
that this is not a business which a man
can run! Each shoot tends to last for
between two and five hours and includes
make-up, refreshments, a custom photo
album and a bag of take-home goodies. If
you want an idea of what sort of
photographs you can produce, check out
an American company that is doing well
in this particular market called
Jenerations Photography. Many of the
customers, incidentally, produce the
albums as a present for their boyfriends or
fiancés.
Rent the Runway
The founder of Rent the Runway, Jennifer
Hyman, is a self-admitted shopaholic.
Three years ago, she and a university
friend, Jenny Fleiss, came up with the
idea of renting out designer dresses by the
likes of Vera Wang and Versace. The
company charges between £40 and £300
to rent a dress for a few days. In just two
years it had grown to 62 employees, 1.5
million customers and a huge selection of
dresses from 150 designers as well as
accessories and handbags. As you can
imagine, the company has become a
major player in the fashion business. For
instance, at any one time it carries nearly
1,400 dress styles mostly from a
designer’s current collection. This is a
business sector that I feel still has vast
room for growth. And, even if you don’t
want to rent out dresses, there are
hundreds of other things that it is possible
to rent, from watches to cars and from
handbags to cameras.
Touch-friendly gloves
I know that spring is here and the weather
is getting warmer but I recently came
across a review of the latest line in handwear.
On a cold day, removing your
gloves to use a smart phone can be a
nuisance. Now there are gloves made with
material that lets you tap and swipe while
staying warm. The three options I saw
reviewed were:
• Agloves Sport. Considered very touchfriendly,
these are made of a knitted
material and free of the bulky seams one
so often gets in gloves.
• Grandoe Sensor Touch. Touch-friendly
nano technology is tanned right into these
sheepskin gloves. Brilliant but not cheap,
as they cost up to £95 a pair.
• Kombi Four-Way stretch gloves with
grip. A sport option, these polyester
gloves have a fleece lining and cuff, a
sticky palm grip and conductive fabric on
the tips of the index fingers and thumb.
Local news, national profits
I was very interested to read a piece about
a journalist called Jane Quinn, who,
together with her husband, Carll Tucker,
launched a community based news
website called The Daily Norwalk in
southern Connecticut and then rolled it
out so that it now has 120 employees and
produces 51 online dailies right across the
east coast of America. The secret of their
success is that they stick to local, relevant
news. This makes their sites more
attractive to advertisers. It isn’t rocket
science and I reckon the concept could be
made to work in all sorts of other places.
The Island Company
I am bringing the Island Company to your
attention for two reasons. First, it does a
very nice line in swimsuits, holiday wear
and sunglasses, which it barely exports.
And, second, it is a great business story
and one that you may want to replicate.
Unlike most fashion businesses, the
Island Company concentrates on selling
its products through upmarket hotels in
America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The
business was launched after its founder,
Spencer Antle, decided to take his
girlfriend on a holiday to the Caribbean
but couldn’t find her a bikini that she
really wanted to wear. Antle thought to
himself, how hard can it be to make one?
He designed something and got a factory
in Brazil to make up samples. One thing
led to another and he decided to launch a
swimwear range – selling at markets and
even from the boot of his car.
Eventually, he began designing other
clothes, like shorts, again selling them by
3
the same method. He broke up with his
girlfriend but the company has continued
to grow! It now has 80 employees and six
shops in holiday spots such as Nantucket,
Grand Cayman and East Hampton.
The Lytro
Here is a product that has a huge
international market but is only, as far as I
know, being sold in the US. It is called the
Lytro (www.lytro.com) and, basically, is a
camera that you never have to focus. You
just point the spyglass-shaped device and
press the button. The camera, which is
free of shutter lag, immediately captures
not only the colour and intensity of light
rays but also their direction. Such data
lets the user create nearly infinite versions
of the scene, adjusting the image on the
camera’s touch screen, online or on a
computer, using specially created
software.
Aero Shot
We humans have sought new caffeine
fixes for hundreds of years. But the Aero
Shot inhaler may be the strangest yet.
Compress the tube, and it burps a puff of
lime-flavoured caffeine powder that
instantly dissolves on your tongue.
Aruliden Fishscape
A very clever designer called Johan Liden
has created a stunningly beautiful fish
bowl in which the glass comes up out of
the bottom of the bowl to create a kind of
fake landscape. As far as I know, he hasn’t
yet found anyone to sell the product for
him overseas. Visit Aruliden for more
information and some of its other very
interesting products
(http://aruliden.com/work/projects/arulide
n-fishscape/).
The Silverback Starke
This next-generation bicycle comes with a
tiny electric generator built into the wheel
in order to power the bike’s lights, plus a
USB port on the handlebars. The maker, a
chap called Deon Retief, wants to become
the Apple of the bicycling industry. The
website to visit is
www.silverbacklab.com. Again, I don’t
think the company has any international
distributors.
Team Brain
Team Brain is a Web-enabled mindmapping
application that lets its users
store, categorise and share project-related
information (documents, notes, images,
Web links, contacts and even calendar
alerts) through a visual mind map. It is a
clever idea because it really enables you
to show the subtle relationships between
information. However, for it to work, all
team members have to contribute. If you
are trying to build a Web-collaboration
environment then I believe this product
could be an excellent place for you to
start. As far as I can make out, it is
relatively inexpensive to install… about
£200 a year.
IT audit, anyone?
An IT audit is an in-depth analysis of a
company’s technical environment,
including its existing computer
applications, hardware infrastructure, IT
plan and IT-related personnel. Such an
audit usually results in a detailed written
report and guide that recommend a
strategic business initiative pertaining to
improving internal and external IT
practices and systems. In plain English:
by having someone who is really
knowledgeable about IT look at your
computers, your software and the people
who use them, it is possible to make
dramatic improvements both to your
company’s efficiency and to the bottom
line. Unfortunately, there aren’t that many
consultancy firms willing to perform IT
audits and, to my mind, this opens up a
huge opportunity for someone with IT
knowledge to get into the market. The one
thing to remember is that if you launch
this sort of consultancy and then try to
sell your own services you rather do away
with the idea of any independence or
credibility. Therefore, I would link up
with a number of suppliers so that when I
was finished I could, without appearing
biased, recommend some external
suppliers.
Book review
At the moment, I am reading All
Businesses Local: Why place matters
more than ever in a global, virtual world.
Do you remember when the term
‘location, location, location’ referred
exclusively to maximising foot traffic?
Marketing today is all about geography, as
companies try to appeal to local tastes on
a global scale. This book explains how
place plays a role in every kind of
business decision. If you run a
supermarket, the authors point out, you
want to be on the side of the street used
by the most homeward-bound commuters.
If you have both a physical and a virtual
presence, you want pricing in the latter
that doesn’t discourage visits to the
former. The authors also discuss the
emotional resonance of place and
consumers’ willingness to associate
specific locales with quality. Think
Germany and cars, for instance. An
excellent and thought-provoking book.
The Thing-O-Matic!
If you have got ten minutes, spend it
online looking at the MakerBot website
and see what you make of its primary
product, the Thing-O-Matic. It costs
around £1,000 and requires twelve hours
or more to assemble. On the other hand,
in the last year the company has sold
6,000 of this particular product. What is
it? It is a 3D printer. Basically, it allows
you to transform digital blueprints into
physical objects on the spot. How does it
work?
MakerBot’s Thing-O-Matic is a userfriendly
descendant of the rapidprototyping
machines used by industrial
designers for years. Such machines can
produce three-dimensional rough drafts of
products prior to their mass manufacture.
The Thing-O-Matic is smaller and
cheaper than industrial grade machines. It
stands 16” high and has an area of one
square foot.
To use the Thing-O-Matic, you need a
computer model of what you would like
to print. The design could be your own
creation or can be downloaded from
www.thingiverse.com, a MakerBotrelated
website where designs are posted
and made available free to users. In either
case, the design needs to be loaded into
MakerBot’s modelling software.
After hitting ‘print’, a spool of plastic
thread begins feeding the Thing-O-Matic.
The thread is heated as it is directed to a
5” platform at the bottom of the printer.
One thin layer at a time the hot plastic
thread, often called the ‘filament’, forms
4
the desired object according to the specs
of the programme. It is rather like
drawing with a hot glue gun.
On average, the printing process takes
about 10 minutes per cubic centimetre.
The printer simply stops moving once the
model is complete. There has to be a
million ways to make money out of this
extraordinary machine.
Video interviews
Face-to-face interviews are often the most
time-consuming (and frustrating) part of
the recruitment process. You know that
half the people you see should never have
been invited in the first place. A new crop
of services aims to streamline the process
by letting you conduct online video
interviews with candidates. If you are
interested in this, take a look at:
www.taketheinterview.com
greenjobinterview.com
www.jobon.com
Again, I think this a useful tool to
incorporate in one’s own enterprise that
has potential as a business idea.
QR!
Have you noticed those little boxy black
and white symbols that have started to
appear on products, publications,
packaging, business cards, ticket stubs
and junk mail? They are called QR, or
quick response, codes. Their purpose is
simple. You scan them with your smart
phone and they instantly take you to a
website. Interestingly, they were originally
designed for the automotive industry as a
way to track parts. Basically, they are a
two-dimensional matrix barcode that can
hold an enormous amount of alpha
numeric or binary data. You can create
QR codes by using a free QR code
generator. Popular code generators can be
found in Bitly.com and Goo.gl. Some
code generators are combined with more
robust tools and mobile platforms for
tracking, refining and analysing QR
campaigns. For example you might check
out www.3seventy.com or again
http://44doors.com. To access the codes,
incidentally, you and your customers will
need a QR code reader app on a smart
phone, such as those by Scanlife,
Redlaser or Quickmark.

China Luxury Goods Trade Booming
Opportunities to export luxury goods to China
are increasing with the news that the country is
likely to overtake Japan as the main world
consumer of luxury goods this year. The US
consulting company Frost & Sullivan also said,
in its recent survey, that Chinese consumers
will buy 53% of their luxury goods in China
itself by 2014 – rather than directly from
abroad, as is currently the case, rising to 55%
in 2015.
Zhu Yue, Consulting Director with Frost &
Sullivan, explained that currently Chinese
consumers perceive luxury goods to be much
more expensive in the domestic market than
abroad but that a narrowing in the differentials
between foreign and domestic prices together
with a reduction in the tax on designer goods
expected in 2012 would cause domestic
demand for these products to rise massively.
The survey also said the highest demand for
luxury goods in China was for luxury watches,
leather bags, designer clothes, perfumes and
cosmetics.
Brazil–Middle East Trade Growing Fast
Although worldwide trading opportunities
with Brazil are booming at the moment, it is
actually Brazil–Middle East and Brazil–North
African trade opportunities that are growing
most of all.
According to a recent report from the Arab
Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (CCAB),
Brazil’s trade with Middle East and North
African countries increased 28.6% in 2011 to
reach US$25.13 billion. Exports to those
countries rose 20.3%, while imports grew
43.3% over the same period. The CCAB also
expects Brazil’s trade with Middle East and
North African countries to rise by 10–15% in
2012. It says the European financial crisis is
the main reason, as importers and exporters
look for alternative markets.
The CCAB’s chief executive officer, Michel
Alaby, said that food product exports from
Brazil showed the most potential for trade
growth.
Factfile: Brazil
Brazil is one of Latin America’s and the
world’s most successful economies right now.
As the largest consumer market of the region
with almost 200 million consumers, the
chances are high there is a market for your
product somewhere in Brazil. Brazil is
something of a land of opportunity for
importers too. Besides being a huge
agricultural power (it is the world’s largest
producer of coffee, sugar cane and oranges to
name but a few), Brazil is also a big industrial
country: it is the second-largest exporter of
iron in the world and one of the main
aluminium producers. In addition, Brazil has
the third-most-advanced industrial sector in
the Americas; key industries include
automotive products, steel and petrochemicals
plus computers, aircraft and consumer
durables.
All Africa to Become a Free Trade Area?
Africa could become a continent-wide free
trade area within five years, if proposals put
forward by African leaders at the African
Union Summit recently come to fruition.
Regional leaders have proposed the new
trading bloc as a response to falling demand
from Europe and the USA owing to the global
financial crisis – and to hedge their bets
against overdependence on commodity exports
to India and China. Currently, intra-African
trade only accounts for 12% of total African
trade, but experts predict that a new free trade
area could increase this to 60% in the long
term.
Many African countries have weathered the
global recession relatively well. The continent
as a whole has enjoyed 5–6% economic
growth in 2011, with several countries
growing much more than that.
Why Not Trade Pet Products?
Every year, millions and millions of pounds
5
are spent on pet products. So if you’re looking
for a new product range, these could be worth
considering. For making contacts, take a look
at what PATS can offer. Virtually the entire pet
trade comes together under one roof at PATS,
with over 140 exhibitors representing the best
of the pet trade – including national and
multinational brands such as Mars Petcare,
Trixie, Wagg, Burgess, Merial, Royal Canin &
James Wellbeloved, Gimborn, Flexi, Burns,
Company of Animals, Johnsons and Danish
Designs. PATS Sandown will take place on
Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st March 2012
at Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher. PATS
Harrogate will take place on Sunday 16th and
Monday 17th September 2012 at Harrogate
International Centre, Harrogate, North
Yorkshire. To register for admittance to PATS
International Trade Terms Explained:
Advising a Letter of Credit
An advising bank acts as the agent of the
issuing bank. The function of the advising
bank is to take reasonable care to verify the
authenticity of credits received and then
accurately transmit them to their beneficiaries.
When advising a letter of credit, the bank
assumes no other liability. On receipt of the
documents for examination and payment, the
advising bank will pay the seller only if it has
received good funds from the issuing bank,
even if it was specifically named as the paying
bank in the letter of credit.
UK BUSINESS NEWS
Retail sales rise in January
Retail sales rose by 0.9% in January
compared with December, according to
the latest figures from the Office for
National Statistics (ONS). The figure was
much stronger than forecast, as many
economists had expected sales volumes to
fall. Sales of furniture and sports goods
were particularly strong as shoppers were
tempted by steep discounts. It builds on
solid December sales when overall volumes
rose by 0.6% on the previous month.
UK business confidence growing
The number of UK businesses planning
to increase their spending on marketing
has risen sharply from last year, a survey
conducted by Mindmetre suggests. Around
57% of firms plan to boost their marketing
budget in 2012, while 18.6% plan a cut. In
2011, 41% planned to increase marketing
spend and 42% planned to cut back.
The survey, which covered businesses of
all sizes, also showed a higher proportion
of big businesses (those with more than
1,000 employees) intending to raise their
marketing budget than small businesses did.
UK manufacturing growth curbs case
for more stimulus
Britain’s manufacturers reported further
growth in February and, despite a slight
slowdown, the sector’s recovery is
reducing the need for more stimulus from
the central bank as the economy is slowly
moving out of the danger zone.
Some Bank of England policymakers,
including its governor, Mervyn King, are
playing down the likelihood of another cash
boost, and news that the sluggish housing
market is gaining a touch of momentum
bolstered views that February’s £50 billion
cash injection may have been the last.
Manufacturers now seem on course to
help the economy grow after a 0.8% drop
in the sector’s output led to a small
overall contraction in the economy.
EU to cut costs for small businesses
Brussels has agreed to radically simplify
the way in which small businesses
prepare their accounts, resulting in
savings of up to 3.5bn (£2.9bn) a year
for Europe’s entrepreneurs.
Companies will only having to send their
simplified accounts to the taxman, who
would in turn be responsible for passing
the accounts onto Companies House. Until
now, in many countries very small firms
(called in EU jargon ‘micro-entities’) have
had to file a full set of financial statements,
including the balance sheet and profit and
loss account, and in some countries are
required to disclose this through
publication in a national newspaper.
With a further round of simplification in
the pipeline, the EU reckons the “aggregate
administrative burden reduction potential
is estimated at around 6.3bn”.
Holiday sickness pay
Workers who become ill during their
holidays will be legally entitled to extra
time off work under controversial plans to
be introduced later this year by Vince
Cable, the Business Secretary.
Under the changes to the Working Time
Directive, time taken off work for sickness,
maternity and paternity leave must be
given to workers in addition to their legal
right to annual leave. So if a worker
becomes ill during annual leave, employers
will have to give them the extra time off
after they have produced a sick note. The
new legal regulations will be introduced
in October and the government estimates
that they will cost employers more than
£100million annually.
Ministers claim that the new regime must
be introduced following several European
legal judgments.
The new way to find cash for your
business
Cash-strapped businesses could soon be
given a huge boost thanks to some
forward-thinking finance providers, who
have joined forces to create the Next
Generation Finance Consortium, in a bid
to aid Britain’s recovery.
As banks fail to hit their lending targets,
the group is seeking to change the financial
landscape in the UK and respond to the
growing demand for alternative sources of
business finance. The group will provide
entrepreneurs and small businesses with
much-needed advice and support about
new finance options available to them. It
will also liaise with government bodies
and other organisations, lobbying for
support on key issues related to smallbusiness
finance.
Finance Consortium, visit www.ngfc.org.uk.
Small firms suffering, large companies
under fire
Late payment by big business is having a
critical knock-on effect, with more than
60% of small companies admitting that
they in turn delay paying their suppliers.
6
Research commissioned by the Forum of
Private Business shows that 62% of firms
say they pay suppliers’ bills late. Of these,
54% blame the time taken by companies
they supply to settle their bills. Late
payment by big business is having a
critical knock-on effect with more than 60%
of small companies admitting that they in
turn delay paying their suppliers. Some
40% of late payers also blame insufficient
funds, while another 39% say a lack of
affordable finance is a contributory factor.
Almost two-thirds of business owners
believe the benefits of settling accounts on
time outweigh the advantages of paying
late. Business groups warn that late
payment of bills is adding to the huge
financial pressures on business owners,
and they want more to be done to tackle
the problem. Shockingly, 61% of firms
report customers extending their payment
terms without notice or consultation.
Large companies, including Dell, Carling
UK and Molson Coors, have all increased
the length of time before they pay bills –
sometimes to as much as 90 days.
The government last year suggested that
an EU late-payments directive, which will
make a 30-day standard invoice payment
compulsory for all businesses, could be
fast-tracked in Britain. However, it has
dropped this and is now looking at how
firms can best be protected under British
law. The directive will not come into
force until 2013.
SME overseas trade to be boosted
The government is hoping to inspire small
and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to
take advantage of overseas trading
opportunities. According to the Business
and Enterprise minister, Mark Prisk, the
government is aware of the importance of
encouraging and supporting firms that
are eager to trade outside of their current
markets.
The minister remarked: “UK Export
Finance is supporting SMEs by
introducing a range of financial support
for businesses that want to export but can’t
obtain the finance they need through the
normal commercial routes.” New online
registers of advisers will be introduced by
the government to help organisations
“protect their intellectual property abroad”.
“With support from UK Trade and
Investment [UKTI] we will give
entrepreneurs the confidence to explore
new markets and grow their business.”
UKTI works alongside companies to help
them ensure their firm is a success in
international markets and aims to
encourage the best overseas enterprises to
look to the UK as their global partner.
Small businesses seeing the benefits of
flexible working
SMEs are rapidly converting to flexible
working, with 76% of workers saying that
their company works more flexibly than it
used to, compared with 67% of large
business workers, according to new research
from global workplace provider Regus.
The research confirms that flexible
working is not just the preserve of large
corporates, and in fact small businesses
have embraced flexi-working more
readily than large ones have.
The research surveyed over 2,500 senior
business managers in the UK and it is
believed to be the first time that independent
research evidence has validated the causal
connection between flexible working
(time and/or place of work) and improved
productivity/revenue generation.
Over two-thirds (71%) of small businesses
report that their productivity has increased
as a result of flexible working practices,
and 63% of SMEs also link increasing
revenues directly to flexi-working.
Forty per cent of UK businesses suffer
IT breaches caused by spam
Newly released research shows that
businesses are struggling to deal with
problems caused by spam, and that nearly
half of them have experienced a data
breach as a result of employees clicking on
malicious links or files within spam emails.
The independent survey – of 201 IT
decision-makers in UK organisations with
between 5 and 1,000 employees, conducted
by Opinion Matters on behalf of GFI
Software – reveals that the problem of spam
is not going away. In fact, the delivery of
and threat from malicious links and files
is greater than ever before. Phil Bousfield,
general manager of GFI Software’s
Infrastructure Business Unit, suggested
that businesses needed to take advantage
of all the latest spam-fighting technologies
available to them. “The most effective way
to stop spam is to employ a multi-layered
defence that encompasses on-premise and
cloud-based anti-spam solutions.”
Government announces further red
tape cuts to help small businesses
Small businesses are likely to benefit
after the government announced that it
will be cutting £4.17 million of red tape
between January and June this year. The
Department for Business Innovation and
Skills also revealed that the Third Statement
of New Regulation shows the success of
the ‘one-in, one-out’ rule, with a cumulative
net reduction in regulation since January
last year. Furthermore, the number of
regulations reducing costs to businesses
continue to outweigh the number that
increase their financial burden.
SUE WADDINGTON’S
SALES AND MARKETING COLUMN
As you know, it is normally Jim who
makes a monthly or bimonthly visit to the
United States. But, this February, I was
the member of the editorial team who got
to travel to the good ole US of A. While I
was there, I was on the lookout for clever
marketing ideas and advertisements. Here
is a roundup of the favourite concepts and
ideas I spotted.
1. The Contagion Bacteria billboard.
Contagion is Steven Soderbergh’s film
about a mysterious airborne virus. The
film’s marketing team hired a group of
microbiologists and immunologists to
treat a billboard with penicillin, mould
and pigmented bacteria. It grew,
thanks to light and temperature
controls, to spell out the name of the
movie. It was set up in an abandoned
storefront window in Toronto, Canada.
As you can imagine, the sign got the
most extraordinary publicity for
almost no marketing budget. Indeed,
you will find videos of it on YouTube.
2. Lululemon Athletica’s ambassador
programme. Instead of copying bigger
brands like Nike and Adidas and
spending hundreds of millions of
dollars on fancy campaigns with star
athletes, Lululemon Athletica went
grass roots to generate publicity – and
major sales of its $100 yoga pants.
Since it was founded in 1998, the
company has implemented an
ambassador programme. This consists
of recruiting local athletes and fitness
instructors for free and giving them
$1,000 in clothing and gear to test.
These ambassadors wear the brand in
front of impressionable students and
lead classes in local stores. In short,
they have been turning their best
customers into brand evangelists with
great success.
3. Intel’s Museum of Me. To advertise
the power of its second-generation
core processor, Intel came up with a
visually smart campaign. The
company worked with a Japanese
digital agency to create the Museum
of Me. This Facebook app accesses a
user’s account, scours it for photos and
content and in a matter of seconds
displays a polished short film that
archives the person’s life in a virtual
gallery. The initiative became a viral
sensation with more than a million
hits in five days, all achieved without
any paid media promotion.
4. About.Me’s Poster Contest. The
popular AOL-owned service about.me,
which enables users to create a
landing page that aggregates all their
online profiles, came up with a simple
but far-reaching contest to raise its
profile: people who got the most votes
on their about.me page would win a
spot on a vast poster site in Time
Square, New York plus a trip to the
city to see their prize. Motivated
contestants got to work tweeting and
posting on Facebook, driving five
times the usual amount of visitor
traffic to about.me.
5. Spotify’s US launch. When Spotify, a
music-streaming service that boasts
more than ten million users in Europe,
arrived in America, it deployed a
launch strategy that catapulted it to the
top of an extremely competitive
playing field populated by the likes of
Pandora, Rhapsody and Google
Music. First, the company focused on
getting early adopters and influencers
with high Klout scores to tell everyone
they knew about the product. Then
there were the limited beta invites,
which control the number of free
subscriptions and elevated demand for
the service. When September rolled
around, Spotify joined forces with
15
Facebook. By now, the only holdouts
are probably too afraid to out
themselves as Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky,
Mick & Tich fans to everyone on their
social networks.
6. Methods Commercial. Method is a
manufacturer of eco-friendly cleaning
products. When it entered the laundry
detergent market, it seemed a
herculean task to change people’s
buying habits and convince users of
other detergents that a small, 20oz
bottle could do fifty loads of laundry,
especially as it only had a marketing
budget of $200,000. So Method
decided that the best way would be to
enlist the help of customers. The
company decided to produce a crowdsourced
commercial, asking people to
record themselves performing specific
actions from a storyboard and submit
these clips for final edit. A total of
332 consumers participated, along
with those who showed up for an open
casting call. When the infinitely
watchable video aired, it was the
week’s 93rd-most-viewed YouTube
clip and resulted in a 68% increase in
the number of Method’s Facebook
fans. Anyway, if you search on
Facebook, you will find the link to the
commercials.
7. Perrier’s YouTube campaign. After
keeping a low profile in North
America for more than a dozen years,
Perrier made a big splash last year
with an edgy digital and social media
push that captured the attention of a
younger demographic. The company
made a series of YouTube videos
under its melting campaign called Le
Club Perrier, featuring scantily clad
dancers partying in a melting night
club. The scene, it promised, would
become sexier, steamier and wilder as
more viewers tuned in and additional
videos were unlocked. More than 11.5
million viewers took the rather
attractive bait.
Are you making the most of email?
Email should be an essential part of any
Internet-marketing strategy. If you have
someone’s email address, you can send
them information directly. It is absolutely
crucial, though, that the recipient has
agreed to receive the information you
want to send. Remember that email is a
relatively cheap, but powerful,
communications tool – you can send
thousands of email newsletters in a
simple, cost-effective way. It also allows
you to keep in regular contact with
customers and to build up a rapport with
them. Never, however, send unsolicited
emails (spam). Email should only deliver
worthwhile information. Anyway, I
thought I would just answer a few of the
frequently asked questions about email
and make a couple of suggestions.
How often should you contact your
customers?
Email is a fast, simple and cost-effective
form of communication, so it is tempting
to use it at every opportunity. Unless the
information you send is valuable, though,
you run the risk of annoying your
customers and turning them off – exactly
the opposite of what you are aiming for.
Should newsletters be free?
This depends on the focus of your
business. If you are publishing
information, then it is hard to see how a
business model can be developed that is
advertising only. However, if you are
using the information you send to help
some other product or service, it is
unlikely that anyone is going to be willing
to pay for it.
What do the terms ‘opt in’ and ‘double
opt’ in mean?
An opt-in approach is where someone
actively decides to give you their email
address so that you can send them email.
However, the emerging convention is
double opt-in. What happens here is that
when the person receives a request to
subscribe to an email address they reply
to that address for verification that the
request did in fact come from there. This
ensures that the email address was not
maliciously set up by a third party.
The first step in any email strategy is to
isolate the information need of your target
market. What sort of information would
they find useful? Would they like
information on new products and special
offers? Would they like information on
trends within your industry? What sort of
information would make them want to
give you their email address?
Once you have defined an information
need, you must make clear what the scope
of your email publication is. What exactly
will the person get if they subscribe?
Unless you are delivering very timesensitive
information, a weekly
publication is usually sufficient.
Getting people to subscribe is vital to the
success of your email strategy. It should
therefore be a prominent subscription box
on your website encouraging people to
join. Also, include subscription details in
every mailing that you send out. Don’t
ask too many questions during the
subscription process.
It is equally important to ensure that the
un-subscription process is easy to use.
People can get frustrated and angry if
they find it difficult to unsubscribe from a
service, and may think you have started
spamming them.
There are two basic options for the format
you can use when delivering an email to
your subscriber base: plain text and
HTML. Plain text is just like a normal
email, and is the simplest and easiest to
produce. HTML is like sending a Web
page in an email. It will deliver a lot more
impact and colour, but it is more
expensive to produce and a number of
older email systems find it hard to read. If
you do decide to use an HTML email
approach, it is a good idea to offer a plain
text version as well or a significant
number of people may be unable to
subscribe to your service. For plain text
email layout keep the line length of text
between 65 and 70 characters to avoid
breaking lines, which make the layout
look very ugly, and keep paragraphs nice
and short – five to six lines is optimum.
Use capitals for headings.
Think of what you are doing as delivering
a publication. You are trying to get people
to read something that will make them
want to act – to buy your product or use
your service, for example. The scarcest
commodity today is people’s time.
Nobody will read an email that goes on
and on, so focus on having punchy
headlines and short summaries. Avoid
having articles that are longer than
500–600 words. The entire email should
not contain more than 1,500 words, unless
you have a dedicated audience that you
know is willing to read longer pieces. So
keep things short, and always have some
sort of call to action.
The subject line is what subscribers see
first when they download their emails.
Because people are so busy they often
scan the subject line and, if it is not
interesting, delete the email. However, if
you are sending out a regular publication,
you may wish to include the title of the
publication and the date in the subject
line. In the body of the email itself it is
helpful to have a table of contents near the
top that lets the reader know what to
expect from the rest of the email.
It is a good idea to use hypertext to link
back to your website, in order to
encourage the subscriber to get more
information, purchase your product and
so on.
