Dynamic
Youth Awards
2013
The second Balsall Heath
Dynamic Youth Awards were
held at Balsall Heath Church
Centre recently and saw a record
number of residents celebrating
the achievements of young people
over the last twelve months.
Among the apologies from special
guests unable to attend was
former local resident and now
Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth,
Councillor Chaz Singh and Prime
Minister David Cameron who
stated, ‘It is hugely important that
we celebrate the good deeds of the
community’s young people and
create greater confidence amongst
young people so their confidence
and achievements are recognised’.
The young people were
nominated by the community
and judged by Peter Cole (Editor
Balsall Heathan Community
Newspaper), Councillor Habib
Rehman and Georgina Johnston
and Vanessa Purwel of the West
Midlands Police.
Abdullah Rehman of the Balsall
Heath Forum who hosted
the event said “They say each
child needs the care of a whole
community, not just its parents, to
grow into youthful maturity” That
saying was put into real practice as
the whole community celebrated
and applauded its young people.
Part of the evening was dedicated
to acknowledging the hard
work of community champion
Mr Javed Iqbal who recently
lost his battle against aplastic
anaemia. His efforts to challenge
vice on the streets over 20 years
ago and which helped change
Balsall Heath for the better were
celebrated through a posthumous
award presented to his family by
Crime is down in Balsall Heath
People living and working in East Birmingham are safer now than
at any time in recent history as latest crime figures show another
record fall in offending rates.
In Balsall Heath total crime tumbled by 9.5 per cent from April
2012 to March 2013 compared to the previous 12-month period -
with significant reductions in business crime, burglary and robbery
- and means victim numbers are at an all-time low.
Officers have been working hard to prevent prolific offenders from
POLICE, PARTNERS AND
PUBLIC COME TOGETHER
IN BIRMINGHAM EAST
Birmingham East residents may have noticed some new artwork
that has sprung up around areas such as Balsall Heath.
This is part of Project
Captivate - a new initiative
being carried out across
a number of locations by
police and their partners in
an innovative bid to improve
the area.
The campaign does not just
look at tackling crime but also
other factors which affect the
day to day lives of residents in the area, including the environment
they live in and the general well-being of its residents.
Project Captivate is a long term plan for the area which sees police
working with partners including Birmingham City Council, NHS
and local charities to make a real difference to the lives of the
people living and working there over the next few years.
Residents will soon be seeing the distinctive posters, mobile
advertising boards and leaflets the force are using to promote
the initiative in and around key areas in the Birmingham East local
policing unit.
editor, Paul Fulford.
Mr Fulford said of the event,
“Thank you for restoring my
faith in all that is good about
Birmingham”.
DOWNTIME
at ORT
An art exhibition and socially
engaging project by artist,
lecturer and writer, Paul
O’Kane called ‘Downtime’
will run from 15th May to
19th June at the Ort Gallery.
Featuring the work of local
artists, ‘Downtime’ refers to
the precious and special kind
of time that is experienced
unexpectedly. There is also a
film screening on the 29th May
at 6pm called ‘Yes, it is L’Argent’
(1983) by Robert Bresson.
committing crime in Balsall Heath. In the last month two prolific
offenders have been issued with anti-social behaviour orders
preventing them from entering parts of Balsall Heath where they
commit crime.
Inspector Rachel Crump said: “We are reducing crime with the
help of the local community and partners. We are also focusing
on offender management, targeting those offenders who regularly
commit crime in the area.
“We will continue to work with residents and partners to make a
difference where it really matters, our communities.”
The artwork which was funded by Birmingham Community Safety
Partnership, features the strapline ‘Your streets, our priority’ and
urges people to visit the local Birmingham East policing website
for more information and to get involved with what’s going on in
their community.
Chief Inspector Helen Kirkman who is in charge of the initiative
in Birmingham East said: “This is a real opportunity for us to work
with residents and our partners to really make a difference to the
areas that we have recognised need some extra support.
“So far, there has been a real diverse range of activity carried
out in areas such as Balsall Heath and Sparkbrook ranging from
community clean up operations to officers working with children
in schools. This initiative is truly led by the community to the point
that they even decided on the Project Captivate name.
“We can only succeed and get the best results possible if we work
together and we hope that that continues and grows.
“We would urge people to visit our website at www.
birminghameastpolice.org.uk to see what work has already gone
on and get in touch if you want to get involved. Whether it’s
volunteering your services at a community clean up or just sharing
your views with us, we want to hear from you.”

A GOOD READ
Maggot Moon by Sally Gardner
Standish Treadwell (hero) lives in “The Motherland”, a repressive
regime obsessed with being the first nation to reach the moon.
Standish lives with his grandfather (also hero) in Zone 7. Food
and basic necessities are in short supply, people mysteriously
disappear. Life is most definitely not jolly. Standish also gets
singled out due to his severe dyslexia and is often bullied at
school.
The story unfolds through Standish’s friendship with Hector,
his attempts to get back at the ‘system’ and his part in the
moon mission. It is written in a style which reflects events and
characters from history.
Hope all that does not sound too
austere or dull. This is a towering tale
of friendship, courage, rebellion and
more. It could well be a Carnegie
winner this year. Please, please read it.
Bee Garden
Opens
by John Newson
Bees do a vital job in pollinating
flowers and fruits, but they have
been declining in numbers across
the country. In future they will
have a re-fuelling point in Balsall Heath’s own Bee Garden. This
opened on 18th May and has been planned to provide flowers all
through the year, to feed the bees and butterflies.
The location is Longmore Street, close to Percy Shurmer Academy,
where walkers and cyclists will enjoy it. Birmingham Friends of
the Earth has provided the funds, from a benefit event that they
held. The bee-friendly plants were put in by Balsall Heath Forum’s
Green Team, to enhance a Jubilee Garden that they created
in 2012, marking Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years as Queen. This is
part of making the River Rea valley into a more effective wildlife
corridor, from Cannon Hill Park into the city centre. The opening
was accompanied by a Bee Walk, so that residents could see what
else can be done to increase flowers, bees and wildlife generally.
The Opening included an invitation to our area’s MP Roger
Godsiff, who has been supporting the Bee Cause in Parliament.
Friends of the Earth are campaigning for an end to the use of
certain pesticides that may be linked to the death of bees. They are
encouraging everyone to avoid using these chemicals and instead
to plant bee-friendly flowers in their gardens. Information about
the Bee Cause is at www.birminghamfoe.org.uk or ring 0121 632
6909 (10-5).
Bee plants can be bought at the
Tree Nursery on St Paul’s Road.
We can observe what the bees like
and plant more of it! Watch out for
further information around the annual
Carnival in July, whose theme is to be
“Butterflies, Bees , Bugs and Blooms”.

Balsall Heath Forum Focus
A Cleanascene for Balsall Heath
Despite all the good news, there is still far to much litter and
rubbish in public places in Balsall Heath. Cristina, a resident of
Homer Street is leading a magnificent 3 pronged litter pick on
Sunday 7th July. It will end with a major celebration in Mandela
Park. Cristina says: “I’m challenging every resident and every street
to play their part.”
Going for Gold
This year’s Carnival is special. It’s theme is ‘butterflies, bees, bugs
and blooms’. Youngsters (and adults) are invited to dress up as
one or the other. But, also, for the first time, the Britain in Bloom
judges will attend and judge Balsall Heath’s entry in the middle of
the carnival and be surrounded by all those bees and butterflies.
Plus, the very next day is Cristina’s Cleanascene. Starting by
Calthorpe, Cannon Hill and Balsall Heath Road parks, 3 columns
of litter pickers will wend their way to Mandela Park by Nelson
Mandela School. There they will hold a celebration of the
Cleanscene and challenge every resident and every road in the area
to care for their appearance and qualify for a ‘Clean Street’ badge.
Will this tip the balance, not just in the cleaning and greening
of Balsall Heath, but in the judges minds? Is this the year when
Balsall Heath will ‘Go for and get Gold’? Watch this space. Let’s
all get behind Cristina and create a Cleanscene in every street in
Balsall Heath.
2 The Green
Team costs
£60k a year.
Just £25k
of this cost
is spent on
creating and
sustaining
what these
photographs
depict and
other greening
work. That’s
the equivalent
of the costs of
preventing just
3 burglaries.
It’s ¼ of the
value of the rise
in the value of
just one house
in the last 10
years.
q We
know that the
Bleak to Beautiful
The photographs shown were taken in April of this year.
They are of public places which were once untidy, uncared
for and bleak. The Forum’s elected executive asked their
Green Team to transform them, make them look owned,
cared-for and welcoming. Individually they are good.
Collectively they make a big impact.
Three key
questions
1 Before the
daffodils were
planted and the
wooden planters
placed on street
corners, only 7
people entered
the annual garden
competition. Now
90 do so. In part,
this is due to the
example set and the
creation of the feeling that: “If others will bother, so should
I.”
Please also note that a few of the flowers and trees were
damaged in the first 2 years of the project. Now, none are.
They are universally respected and enjoyed. This gives rise
to the second question.
neighbourhood now looks and feels better. So, what money
does this ‘caring look’ both save and raise. We must calculate:
• The number of crimes prevented and the cost of them
which is saved.
• The effect on improving health and well-being and the
costs saved by the NHS.
• The rise in house prices and, thus, the value to Registered
Social Landlord’s, the Council and Private individuals.
q Then, we must ask: Isn’t it worth the while of the
police, justice system, RSL’s etc, etc to invest in the Forum’s
cleaning and greening work? For it both saves them money
and makes their work and lives much easier. Not only is
greening fun and attractive, it’s also very cost effective. A
Cost Benefit Analysis showed that for every £1k spent on
the Forum, at least £7 were saved. That is, for every £25k
invested, £175k plus is saved.
3 Finally, if beautifying the area is both good and cost
effective for Balsall Heath, can it be replicated in other
neighbourhoods? A lot of other neighbourhoods and
Central Government are very keen to know the answer. The
Forum is particularly keen to help partners to replicate its
success and to put them and it at the head of a cleaning,
greening, beautification programme. So, can RON (Respect
our Neighbourhood) show others how to make that respect
work in their neighbourhood? Let’s put Balsall Heath at the
head of the national map and spread the sectors of successful
renewal in many areas.

Dear Editor,
Can we trust Warwickshire County Cricket Club and, more
especially, can we trust Birmingham City Council to protect the
interests of residents who live within the proximity of the club?
Many residents will have received in early January, a
communication from Birmingham City Council’s Planning
and Regeneration Department, relating to an application
by Warwickshire County Cricket Club for a variation in the
planning consent which in summary was ‘…to allow
daytime use of the floodlights on more than 15 occasions per
year, with evening floodlights restricted to no more than the
existing 15 occasions per year’.
continued on page10...
However what most residents will not be aware of is that an
agreement has been reached between WCCC and BCC that
daytime is defined as ending at sunset according to MET office
timings. The consequence of this is that WCCC are now at

liberty to continue daytime games and use floodlights until
8pm on 133 occasions during the year and up to 9.30pm on 60
occasions. Rather more than the fifteen occasions indicated in
the letter to residents.
Birmingham City Council’s rather cynical justification of their
actions is to point out that this information was available on
line and in local libraries - buried deep in a planning officer’s
report- and that there have been few complaints anyway to
recent planning applications.
Can we trust WCCC and Birmingham City Council? The
answer seems clear.
Yours sincerely,
Gary Spruce.
Dear Editor,
The Dynamic Youth Awards evening was special. So many
exceptional young people to thank for so many good deeds.
Thanks for introducing us to them. The future of Balsall Heath
is truly in good hands.
With good wishes to them all.
Mrs Webster
Dear Editor,
I have been contemplating for a while moving house, which
possibly could mean a change of area which I haven’t quite been
able to make a decision about. Last Wednesday afternoon my
daughter went to play just outside the front of the house in
Runcorn Road with a group of friends, and after that she went
missing. I felt totally helpless and eventually called the police.
My daughter was however just playing in a neighbour’s house
and hadn’t asked permission to go there, I was so happy she was
safe and sound.
I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the neighbours and
passers-by who went looking for my daughter and strangers who
wanted to help. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me.
Also a thank you to the police, who were really surprised by the
amount of people out looking.
Many times in life you can be swayed by the promise of
something better. What last week showed me was that good
neighbours are hard to find, and when you find them why leave?
Good neighbours are reason to stay and not move.
Why leave to search for something you may already have on
your doorstep.
