THE ACTORS’ FUND BENEFIT CONCERT
Always one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, The
Actors’ Fund’s annual fall benefit concert is celebrating its five years!
These unforgettable star-studded evenings have raised an amazing total
of over $2,000,000 in support of The Fund’s programs and services.
Successful both artistically and financially, the annual fall concert is always
an event not to be missed.
To celebrate this milestone, The Actors’ Fund has announced a benefit concert
of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. This much-loved and seldom-seen classic
will be presented on Monday, September 26th, 2005, at Disney’s New Amsterdam
Theatre. With a Tony ® Award winning score by Cy Coleman, Betty Comden and
Adolph Green (who also wrote the Tony ® Award winning book), the benefit features
an all-star cast, including Marin Mazzie, Douglas Sills, Joanne Worley, Brad
Oscar, Brooks Ashmanskas, and Christopher Sieber with Artistic Director Seth
Rudetsky once again in the conductor’s seat and Director Peter Flynn, who staged
both CHESS and FUNNY GIRL, staging this stunning musical.
Based on the play by Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur and Bruce Millholland and
the classic 1934 screwball comedy TWENTIETH CENTURY, starring John
Barrymore and Carole Lombard, ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY is set on the
legendary luxury train the Twentieth Century Limited, which ran from Chicago
to New York. The hilarious plot follows bankrupt theatre producer Oscar Jaffe
(Sills) as he tries in vain to regain the trust and talent of his ex-lover,
film star Lily Garland (Mazzie). The original production won five
Tony ® Awards and had a stellar cast that included Tony ®
winning John Cullum, the great Madeline Kahn, the hilarious
Imogene Coca and a dashing Kevin Kline, who won his first
Tony ® for the show. The opulent production was directed by
the legendary Harold Prince.
As with all previous concerts, the highlight of the evening will be the music
and, for anyone who is unfamiliar with the gorgeous ON THE TWENTIETH
CENTURY score, you are in for a real treat. Sweeping, lush and hilarious,
the score shows Cy Coleman and Comden and Green at the top of their
game. The show is a perfect fit for The Actors’ Fund concert series and
promises to be a night to remember.
This exciting benefit concert series began in 2001 with the 20th anniversary
concert of DREAMGIRLS starring Tony ® winners Heather Headley, Audra
McDonald, and Lillias White. The follow-up in 2002 was the Broadway classic
FUNNY GIRL, starring THE OC’s Peter Gallagher and a cast of 14 Fanny Brices,
including Whoopi Goldberg, Bebe Neuwirth, Kristin Chenoweth, Jane Krakowski,
Sutton Foster, and more! International singing sensation Josh Groban headlined the
2003 concert of the cult classic CHESS, and last year the age of Aquarius returned with
an all-star concert of HAIR (now in a just-released cast album from Ghostlight Records).
A special element of these evenings is that the generous artists step forward and donate their
incredible talent and valuable time to The Actors’ Fund to make these evenings possible.
Every actor, singer, and dancer, as well as the director, choreographer, stage managers, press
agents, marketing and design teams, who play a part in these labor-intensive events do it for
one reason – they all have a deep understanding and love for the mission of The Actors’
Fund. The concert is a clear illustration of that mission – the entertainment community
taking care of its own.
From Joseph Benincasa, Executive Director
As you can imagine, I talk about The Actors’ Fund a lot.
I never get tired of telling people what we do because
I’m so proud of this organization and everyone who
works here. I recently was asked, “What would you say is
the engine that drives The Actors’ Fund?” First and foremost,
it’s our mission – to support people in need in the
entertainment community through social and human
services and programs. But after that we are, fundamentally,
a group of people with various talents and skills who
come together to fulfill the obligations set out in of our
mission; a diverse collection of dedicated people driven
by commitment, service, and passion. This includes our
amazing Board of Trustees, our savvy and caring Western
Council, and our unbelievably loyal and never-say-uncle staff.
And of course there is another very special group of people
who are always there no matter what the need, the situation,
or the job. They are our indispensable volunteers.
Volunteers are hard at work before special events start and
long after they’re finished. Volunteers stuff envelopes, file
untold numbers of items, collate piles of materials, and
help keep things organized. Volunteers give directions,
work the front lines, run errands and messages, and provide
many extra sets of arms and legs when staff can’t be
stretched any further. Volunteers are a vital part of our
engine. I’d like to mention just a few examples of volunteer
positions that The Actors’ Fund utilizes and treasures.
• Every special event produced by The Fund – like the
annual Fall Concert – is fueled by volunteers.
• At Actors’ Fund Special Performances, performers,
producers, and musicians ALL volunteer their time and
talent for The Actors’ Fund.
• The Lillian Booth Actors’ Home, our skilled nursing and
assisted living care facility is dependent on its volunteers
to assist staff with the care of our residents.
• At The Aurora, The Fund’s supportive housing on West
57th street, volunteers teach a wide variety of classes
(stretching and Spanish are a couple of examples) for the
residents. The Aurora also has volunteer massage therapists
and acupuncturists and a theatre desk, providing
free tickets to residents and clients, all volunteer run.
• The Al Hirschfeld Clinic is supported by dedicated
volunteer physicians, who assist our Medical Director
and staff.
Volunteers are absolutely essential to the work of The Fund.
The talent, commitment and warm sense of goodwill provided
by our volunteers endlessly support the mission of
The Fund. We could not do what we do without them.
WOMEN’S
PHYLLIS NEWMAN
HEALTH
INITIATIVE
The goal of the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative is to
provide women in the entertainment industry with the necessary
resources and appropriate support they need to maintain
optimum health and independence. The Initiative helps hundreds
of women each year who are dealing with a variety of
health issues, many whose treatment is additionally compromised
by a lack of health insurance. The Women’s Health
Initiative provides women in the entertainment profession with
access to health care, diagnostic, preventive, and mental health
services, substance abuse treatment, and meaningful assistance
when they are confronted with traumatic illness, injury or a
violent situation.
After receiving a difficult medical diagnosis, the women who
seek assistance from The Fund may find themselves confronting
several challenging scenarios. These can include the ability to
work and earn a living, family issues, child care, quality medical
care and managing medical bills, and the day-to-day coping
(physically and mentally) with a new and complicated
medical condition.
The social workers in the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health
Initiative systematically walk women through the often terrifying
steps that follow a serious medical diagnosis. They ensure that
these women feel supported and nurtured during this demanding
period of upheaval and, for the under or uninsured, they
work tirelessly to secure any and all available financial resources
to help with the potentially crushing debt.
Service components of the Women’s Health Initiative include:
• Individual case management to assist women through each
step of treatment and recovery.
• Individual counseling to help women and their families cope
with physical illness or mental health issues including referrals
to psychotherapists who are experienced in working
with women in the entertainment industry.
• Short-term financial assistance for health-related costs, such
as treatment, medication, insurance and co-payments, as
well as assistance with essential living expenses.
• Support groups where women can offer and receive support
around issues ranging from aging in the industry to family.
• Educational seminars on such topics as navigating the health
care system, managing personal finances, acquiring affordable
health insurance, and housing.
• Linkage to community groups to promote access to public
and private resources that offer support, education or financial
assistance.
The Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative is a both essential
and extremely effective. The Actors’ Fund and all its supporters
– a remarkable community of health professionals, volunteers,
and generous contributors – takes great pride in its
success.
............................
I am an opera and
concert singer. To
be honest, I still do
not feel emotionally
comfortable talking
openly about everything
that I’ve gone
through.
A little over a year
ago, I had rehearsed,
my suitcases were
packed, my prepaid
air ticket had been processed, and in a few hours I was
departing for my next engagement - a title role in a new production
of an opera. At the last moment, I could not go to
the airport. I was at a breaking point. I felt like I was falling
apart. So I didn’t go. It was a big risk to my career but to go
and not do well would have been an even bigger risk to my
spirit and my emotional well being.
What put me on the brink of implosion? Years of being on
the road, pressure to maintain high standards on stage, personal
and financial stress, loss through death, but mostly illness,
or rather illnesses (benign growths in various locations
and acid reflux which makes singing extremely difficult). A
myomectomy to remove fibroids, and a later unsuccessful surgery
to correct the reflux slowed me down for a moment. A
few years before, an MRI revealed a benign tumor on my
pituitary gland which in recent years caused me to develop
hypothyroidism and the problems associated with that condition,
which include vocal difficulties. Through it all I soldiered
on, determined to have the career and to enjoy the wonderful
opportunities that had arrived so late in life. In retrospect, I
am sure that if these physical problems had not developed, I
would have been able to handle the other issues, but illness
was the proverbial “last straw” which brought me, eventually,
to the breaking point. As my ability to function at the optimum
level declined, I found the emotional pressure of not
being able to perform completely devastating.
When things fell apart, I stopped singing. I wanted to get a
better understanding of my health issues and what was possible
for me with the idea that perhaps it was time to move on
to some other life pursuit. I decided to take some time off to
really get back in touch with what I was doing and why. I
decided to devote the summer months of 2004 to that investigation.
No singing, no music, get back in touch with basics,
friends, family and my church community. It was then that I
turned to The Actors’ Fund for help. Determined to deal with
my issues, I availed myself of all of The Fund’s services. I
needed financial assistance because I had exhausted my savings
and all other financial resources. I needed a referral to a
therapist who understood the special needs of performers. I
explored the Actors’ Work Program as I considered the possibilities
of changing careers and, finally, I participated in the
support group for “women of a certain age” where I was able
to vent, share and be a part of a fellowship of other women
who understood some of the things I was going through. All
this from one place – The Actors’ Fund.
After three months without singing, without music, my spirit
needed to express itself again. I decided there was still something
I had to offer and I began to find my way back. Through
The Actors’ Fund I was able to build a plan for my return. My
recovery is on a daily basis and subject to periodic evaluation. I
have in place a medical team who understands the importance
of optimum health maintenance. Along with the love and support
of my family, friends and community, The Actors’ Fund gave
me the necessary resources to cope while I was out of work.
Now, almost fourteen months later, I have resumed my career.
I’m writing today from Madrid where I just finished my fourth
performance of Princess Eboli in DON CARLO at Teatro Real.
They say “it’s not over until the fat lady sings!”, and since I’m
on a diet . . .
Happily ever after? More like Sweet Charity’s “hopefully ever
after.” It has not been, nor is it easy. But it is wonderful to
have my life back, and The Actors’ Fund helped me get here.
Staff Profile:
Carol Mannes
Social Worker,
Phyllis Newman
Women’s Health
Initiative
Actors’ Fund social
worker Carol Mannes
knows the entertainment
industry very
well, having begun
her career as a dancer at the age of 16. She has had a successful
and varied career which spanned Broadway, TV and
film. Carol also found the time to establish and run a children’s
theatre for 10 years and teach at Circle in the Square –
all while effectively managing to be a full time mother of
three daughters. With all this incredible talent, drive and
creativity, it seemed only natural for Carol to add another
accomplishment to her already distinguished resume. She
went back to school and finished her social work degree.
As an actress, Carol was familiar with The Actors’ Fund, having
performed in Special Performances and also as a supporter
of The Fund’s Inner Circle Program. While in her second
year of study for a Masters degree in Social Work at Columbia,
Carol learned that The Actors’ Fund had an opening for a
Social Work Intern. With her wide range of experience in
the entertainment field, Carol knew that this position was a
perfect fit for her and she went after it with the same enthusiasm
that had served her so well as an actress. Her internship
was extended when a social worker went on maternity leave,
and later, when a full time position with the Phyllis Newman’s
Women’s Health Initiative became available, Carol felt confident
that she had found her niche.
As the first full-time social worker for the Women’s Health
Initiative, Carol has developed many programs, all specifically
designed for the often atypical needs of women in the entertainment
field. Having the invaluable experience of working
in the field herself gives Carol the ability to build strong relationships
with her clients. She understands what they’re
going through because she has been there.
Carol has developed many programs designed specifically for
the needs of women in the entertainment field. For example,
ageism is of particular concern to women in the industry. It’s
very common for women to reach a certain age and feel
abandoned by their chosen profession – after devoting their
lives to their work. Carol recognized the need for women to
come together in a supportive atmosphere and developed
the “Women’s Peer Support Group” for women over 45 in
the industry.
Carol has also organized many educational seminars covering
such topics as nutrition, heart health and, of course, she continually
confronts the ongoing challenge of acquiring and
maintaining heath insurance for Actors’ Fund clients. When
women don’t have continual health insurance coverage, they
are less likely to see a doctor on a regular basis, and regular
check-ups and exams are vital to early detection of any medical
issue. Carol continues to do extensive outreach to cancer
centers and hospitals in the area to make sure they are aware
of The Actors’ Fund’s programs and services. And by expanding
the Mental Health referral database, Carol is constantly on
the lookout for therapists that understand the special issues
that confront women in this industry.
Women typically see themselves as caregivers; therefore they
don’t always know what to do when they themselves get sick.
The Actors’ Fund has given them a safe place to come.
Through the work of Carol and all our talented social workers,
there is a place that understands the unique challenges
of life in the entertainment community.
Lynn Redgrave and her dog Viola joined a great group
of team members from The Actors’ Fund who participated
in the 8th Annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women
on April 30. The Fund had an amazing group this
year, with expert volunteers in Times Square appearing
bright and early before the race and in the East
Meadow of Central Park at its end. Many thanks to
all of the volunteers and team who braved the torrential
rains and came out to support The Actors’ Fund’s
Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and for the
cause of eradicating women’s cancers.

“There’s Nothing
like a Dame”
Phyllis Newman at NOTHING LIKE A DAME 2005
In 1995, Actors’ Fund trustee Phyllis Newman, Harriet
Slaughter of the League of American Theatres and
Producers and BWAY (Better Wellness And You), and
Producer Maria DiDia came to The Actors’ Fund with an
idea. They were concerned that women in the entertainment
community needed a place to go that understood
their particular needs when a health crisis occurred.
Being a breast cancer survivor, Phyllis understood how
frightened women can be when faced with a serious medical
condition and felt that too many women in the entertainment
industry were facing those problems alone. As a
result, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative of
The Actors’ Fund of America was created.
The major concern was funding for the program. Being
theatre professionals, these smart and resourceful women
pooled their resources and brought the women of
Broadway together for a one night only benefit – NOTH-
ING LIKE A DAME. That first memorable night featured
an incredible roster of stars including Julie Andrews, Lucie
Arnaz, Lauren Bacall, Betty Buckley, Zoe Caldwell, Carol
Channing, Glenn Close, Barbara Cook, Blythe Danner,
Sandy Duncan, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Heather Headley,
Celeste Holm, Marin Mazzie, Rue McClanahan, Idina
Menzel, Rita Moreno, Donna Murphy, Bebe Neuwirth,
Lynn Redgrave, Liz Smith, Marisa Tomei, Kathleen Turner,
and Wendy Wasserstein, and many others.
The cast of NOTHING LIKE A DAME 2005
March 2005 marked the Tenth Annual NOTHING LIKE A
DAME benefit. Year after year, the women of Broadway
come out for one night to support The Actors’ Fund
Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative.
The Actors’ Fund is especially grateful to Broadway
Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, who in recent years has been
the Executive Producers of DAME, along with Maria Di
Dia, Denise Roberts Hurlin, Carol Ingram, Phyllis
Newman and Ariadne Villarreal. The dedicated
Broadway performers who donate their time and talent
year after year to this event are the heart of this special
night, along with the woman who championed this cause
from the beginning, Phyllis Newman. The Annual Benefit
has provided over $1.5 million to The Women’s Health
Initiative and is, today, the program’s largest single funder.
A hilarious film spoof of the Frank Capra
actresses – Amy Ryan, Polly Bergen and Sharon
dramatizing her triumph over cancer. No tribute to
Phyllis Newman would be complete without music.
To present the award, stage and screen legend Lauren Bacall presented the first annual
Tom Dillon Humanitarian Award to Ms. Newman.
The music continued when three of Broadway’s best performed a salute to music industry
legend – and a previous recipient of the Nedda Harrigan Logan award – Neil Sedaka.
Orfeh, the sultry star of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, the hot new star of ALL SHOOK UP
Cheyenne Jackson and one of the stars of HAIRSPRAY, Mary Bond Davis, thrilled the
audience and Mr. Sedaka. The man himself took to the stage and regaled the audience
The final award of the evening was presented
by Actors’ Fund President Brian Stokes
Mitchell. Stokes spoke very fondly about
the honoree, Broadway producer Roger
Berlind, who produced, among so many
other shows, the Tony ® winning production
of KISS ME KATE – for which Stokes won his Tony ® . After a film tribute, Stokes presented
The Fund’s Medal of Honor – the highest honor The Actors’ Fund can bestow –
to his friend. As Stokes graciously stated, “When Roger Berlind produces a show, it’s
clear right from the beginning that his heart is in it. His love for every aspect of the production
is palpable and felt by every member of the company – it is felt backstage, on
stage and front of house. His commitment is not showy – his collaborative spirit is
always respectful. He has a demeanor that resonates with integrity.”
Of course the most exciting aspect of this glorious evening is that nearly $600,000 was
raised to support the programs of The Actors’ Fund. A special thanks must go out to
MGM ON STAGE and PEOPLE MAGAZINE for their generous sponsorship of the evening.
Over the last two years many of our most generous donors have
been In The Spotlight. This fall The Fund marks the second
anniversary of the In The Spotlight membership program for
those who make annual gifts of $2,500 and above. Spotlight
members not only demonstrate their loyalty to the continued
success of our mission but also receive fantastic special benefits.
Fund Success: With a late fall ’03 kick off, the Spotlight program
had a tremendously successful start, enrolling 227 members
by the end of 2004. In this first year Spotlight members
donated in excess of $830,000. It was a great endorsement of
the program with our most generous Spotlight donors making
gifts of $25,000.
In 2005 we are on track to “break a leg” again this year. As of
June 30, 2005 we are $80,000 ahead of funds raised by the
If we devoted an entire issue of this newsletter to him, we
would still not fit all the accomplishments of Robert Brewster,
an Aurora resident since 1996. Dr. Brewster has distinguished
himself as a teacher, artist and administrator. He earned too
many university degrees to mention them all. A partial list
include Performance Practice (Voice) from Washington
University, Master of Music in Voice from Indiana University,
and a degree in Piano with Honors and a minor in Voice from
Wheaton College. Over the years he has performed numerous
opera and concert engagements in the US and Europe. Rather
“The Spotlight program provides funds that serve people in
need,” says Joe Benincasa, The Actors’ Fund Executive Director.
“And at the same time Spotlight events give us many opportunities
throughout the year to thank and interact with our most
generous supporters.”
Spotlight member benefits include:
• Priority access to House Seats through a dedicated hotline
• Complementary Special Performance tickets for Broadway
shows performed especially for The Actors’ Fund
• Invitations to film screenings
• Invitations to the annual Spotlight dinner celebration
And perhaps most important of all is the generous support that
Spotlight members give to The Actors’ Fund so that we can
THE POWER OF SONG By Allen Raymon
than rest on his laurels, Dr. Brewster has embarked upon a
project to give those with HIV/AIDS a second lease on life.
That lease comes under the title The Robert Brewster Chorale,
“Healing through Song; Inspiring Hope.” In that world of
uncertainty, The Robert Brewster Chorale believes that the
slightest ray of hope can have the greatest impact on the lives
of those afflicted by HIV/AIDS. Music-making has therapeutic
power to not only lift the spirits of those infected, but also
gives them hope, strength and courage. Led by the vision of
Dr. Brewster, the singers of the chorale inspire through education,
advocacy and outreach in addition to their classical
music repertoire from medieval to the present.
Over the past several months, Robert Brewster’s chorale has
been steadily growing and developing into a strong, passionate
singing group. Many of the members are residents from the
Aurora and they have been able to use the Colleen Dewhurst
Room at the Aurora for their rehearsals several times a week
over the past 6 months. The chorale made its world premiere
performance at the traditional worship service as part of The
Riverside Church Celebrates Pride on June 26th. This is just the
beginning.
