No.9. March 2012
Thank you Alison
Sadly Enfield Street Pastors (ESPs) had to say
goodbye to Alison, our Coordinator, at the end of
2011. Having trained with the first batch of ESPs
back in March 2006, Alison has been with ESPs
since the very beginning.
When you look back through these newsletters
(you can read them at www.streetpastors.org.uk
on the Enfield page) you are reading the

over these past six years. This page has photos
of the many aspects of her work for us. Thank
you Alison for all
you have done to
establish and
lead Enfield
We are continually thankful for the commitment
and reliability of our teams as they serve the

action on the streets.
Currently, ESPs are patrolling the Fore Street
corridor in Edmonton, Enfield Town,
Testimony
Near KFC in Southgate there was a
large group of youths and three or
four girls in their late teens making a
lot of noise and behaving badly.
They were obviously enjoying themselves
but in an aggressive and intimidating
way for passers by. We
went up and said hello and they said

connection! We talked to them about
their behaviour and the way it was
affecting passers by, and talked to
some of the girls about not letting
the guys take advantage of them.
They dispersed.
Southgate and
Palmers Green.
We have helped
vulnerable people
get home late at
night. We have
been to
Communities in
shock after a fatal
stabbing, and
brought
reassurance to the
people we meet.
We have advised
young teenagers
to go home to
their parents. We
have talked to
many people. In
particular, we have given positive hope to young
people who realise they need to sort their lives

of the Gospel with people and prayed for people.
Thank you for your continued support,
encouragement and prayers.
John Rawding. Chair
Testimony
We passed by the pub, speaking to one or two.
There was one particular guy who was causing
problems. We asked his friends if someone could get
him home. They said a car had come and he was
eventually taken away to another venue! Pity
them. Still, Palmers Green quietened down and we
went home...

broken bottles and glass, and two beer glasses.
Looking Back
Back in 2005 the inspiration for
ESPs came from the Enfield
Police, and the first
group of ESPs began
their training in March of
2006 with Alison
appointed Coordinator at
Richard
the time.
Kevin
ESPs, along with Street Pastor groups
around the UK operates under the
umbrella of Ascension Trust. We are
like a local franchise. However, we are
an independent charity run by
Trustees (the Management Team),
which currently consists of John Rawding, Chair;
Richard Hildtich, Treasurer; and Kevin Russell,
Legal Advisor, all pictured here.
John and Richard are also Senior Pastors or
Team Leaders. This means they are conversant
with the issues the teams meet on the streets.
As a team we are constantly seeking to improve
our effectiveness as Street Pastors in Enfield.
Recent Graduates

Pastors graduated after
completing their training.
We send our congratulations
to Carol,
Olu, and Nigel, and we
wish them well as they
Carol
continue to work with
us in Enfield.
The Graduation Ceremony took
place in the grand surroundings
of
speaker
John
I was born in Edmonton in June 1955. My
childhood was not a good one but I survived it.
I was one of four children, and when I was
eleven it was found I had been ill treated and
was placed into care in a residential home in
the Midlands. I was there till it was time for me
to leave school and start work.
After a couple of jobs I moved to London
Transport as a bus conductor, driver, and then
one man driver. While there I studied to better
myself as I had left school with no qualifications.
I took exams at the City and East London
University and passed with RSAs and BAs. I
volunteered to be a Special with the MET.
I had been brought up in the Christian faith and
went to Sunday school from an early age, but

and I did my own thing. All this changed on 8th
August 1978. I was in a serious road accident
and suffered many injuries. I was in a coma and
was kept alive on machines for
some time. This was a
significant time in my life
because, whilst in the coma I
seemed to go on a spiritual
journey. I went to this most
wonderful place and met many
relatives, but when I got to the
Light it talked to me and told
me it was not my time and that
there were plans for me. When
I woke from the coma the
doctors told me how lucky I
was. They told me I would
never walk again, and would
not see 40 years. God, it
seemed, had other plans. I
walked and went back to work
for another 7 years both as Bus
Driver and Police Officer in the
Metropolitan Special
Constabulary.
Since my accident I have had
many problems with my health.
In 1990 I was in Highlands
Testimony
At the bus stop we spoke to L
and T who was really drunk.
L said it happened very often.
We offered to take him home,
and we prayed because L was
very upset

Just wanted to pass on a huge
thank you to the street pastors
working near the Civic Centre on
Saturday the 7th of January.
My boyfriend has a drinking
problem and was a little bit
worse for wear and I was quite
upset. They came up to us to
check that we were OK and
offered to help us get him home.
I can't begin to explain how
much I appreciated the kindness
brought forward to us.
You are all in my prayers
tonight.
With kind regards,
L and T
Hospital to have broken bones taken out of my
legs. They told me my bones and muscles are
weak and will break easily, and that I had an
illness that allowed the cartilages to deteriorate.
I now have damaged cartilages in both knees,
both hips and the top and bottom of my spine.
Then in May 1995 I suffered a big heart attack,
so now I have another condition to cope with
Angina. Then last year I was told my body is full
of arthritis. One day I realized that all the drugs I
was taking were taking away my quality of life
and turning me into a vegetable, so I turned
more to God for help. I came to know the reality
of Jesus in my life and sought his guidance for
my life. I found a way to read the Bible so it
made sense to me and, because I wanted to help
others, I trained for ministry in my church in
Edmonton. And -
forever grateful for that and being with other
Christians keeps me going, especially attending

About five years ago I had a break down and

system was overloaded at the
time, but I was given counseling at
the church. In this time I felt I had
such a tangible experience of

forehead being stroked and my
heart being caressed. All the
problems in my life were shown
me and Jesus told me he was
there before I was born, has been
with me all through my life, and
will continue to carry me till I go
home. Things happen in our lives,

when we really need help God and
Jesus are there to comfort and
show us the way.
It was at this time I pondered on
being a Street Pastor, and after a
bit of time I took the training and
became one. I find it a privilege

had so much help myself in life
the least I can do is to be there to
help others.

Testimony
Zac came on board the xBus and
spent about an hour chatting about
things that concerned him. He was
currently homeless and staying with a
friend. He has a criminal record and
wants to become a mechanic. Nigel
and Frank gave him some very
practical advice on how to go about it.
After an hour he said he wanted to
sort his life out and asked for prayer.
them towards
essential
services, as well
as providing a
reassuring
presence for
people who
might feel
vulnerable or
anxious. You can
help us in three
specific ways:
1: PRAYER We need more Prayer Partners,
particularly those willing to take a more
structured part in our work by supporting us in
prayer while we are out, and making the coffee
when we get back!
2: PASTORS The more Street
Pastors we have, the bigger the
impact we can have on street
crime in the Borough and the

love and care with. The next
training programme will begin in
September - could you be among
them?
3: POUNDS - We continue to need
funding from individuals,
churches and grant-making
bodies. Please ask for information
Testimony
We met Z with her twin three year
olds. They were tired and she was
having problems getting them home.
A bit later we caught her up as she
was walking them along the road and
was trying to carry them both, so we
offered to help. Christie and Vicki with

while the rest of the team waited outside
a shop. We prayed for the mum,
and dad came out to say their dinner
was ready (at 11.00pm!).
