<strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>Power</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>awards</strong> <strong>grants</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong> <strong>civic</strong> <strong>and</strong> environmental groups<br />

PORTLAND, Ore. — The <strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>Power</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> has awarded $48,000 <strong>to</strong> <strong>civic</strong> <strong>and</strong> environmental<br />

efforts in <strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong>, including $17,500 <strong>to</strong>ward environmental education programs for <strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong>-area<br />

youth.<br />

Friends of Trees, The Nature Conservancy in Oregon, World Forestry Center, <strong>and</strong> Oregon Trout<br />

each received funds <strong>to</strong> teach young people about the importance of nature <strong>and</strong> the value of preservation.<br />

“As an energy company, we’re working <strong>to</strong> develop new, renewable energy resources <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

preserve our environment as much as possible,” said Lilisa Hall, direc<strong>to</strong>r of communications,<br />

PacifiCorp, <strong>and</strong> executive direc<strong>to</strong>r of the <strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>Power</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>, the philanthropic arm of <strong>Pacific</strong><br />

<strong>Power</strong>. “We’re happy <strong>to</strong> support organizations that are teaching kids the value of resource conservation<br />

<strong>and</strong> about their natural surroundings.”<br />

“We have some terrific organizations in the <strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong> area helping <strong>to</strong> educate our kids, rebuild<br />

rundown neighborhoods <strong>and</strong> promote volunteerism,” said Sheila Holden, <strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>Power</strong> regional<br />

community manager. “It’s a privilege <strong>to</strong> be a part of these efforts.”<br />

The <strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong>-area organizations receiving funds from the <strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>Power</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> include:<br />

• Oregon 150 project (www.oregon150.org) – $10,000 for a statewide effort <strong>to</strong> get Oregonians<br />

involved in sprucing up the state for Oregon’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2009.<br />

• Oregon Zoo <strong>Foundation</strong> (www.oregonzoo.org) – $8,000 for its Urban Nature Overnight program,<br />

which provides h<strong>and</strong>s-on experiences with wildlife for disadvantaged youth <strong>and</strong> for those who have<br />

not had access <strong>to</strong> nature-based experiences.<br />

• Rebuilding Together <strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong> (www.rebuilding<strong>to</strong>getherportl<strong>and</strong>.org) – $7,500 <strong>to</strong>ward repairing<br />

the homes of those who cannot do the work due <strong>to</strong> financial hardship, age or disability.<br />

• Friends of Trees (www.friendsoftrees.org) – $6,000 <strong>to</strong> train <strong>and</strong> organize more than 2,400<br />

volunteers during the 2008-2009 planting season. Volunteers will plant 22,000 trees in the <strong>Portl<strong>and</strong></strong><br />

metropolitan area.


• The Nature Conservancy in Oregon (www.nature.org) – $5,000 for its Youth for Conservation<br />

environmental education program, which provides high school kids <strong>and</strong> young adults with<br />

invaluable experience addressing real-world conservation problems.<br />

• World Forestry Center (www.worldforestry.org) – $2,500 for the Forestry Leadership Youth<br />

Summer Camp, held at Magness Memorial Tree Farm, for teens <strong>to</strong> learn about sustainable forest<br />

management <strong>and</strong> related environmental, social <strong>and</strong> economic issues.<br />

• Oregon Trout (www.oregontrout.com) – $4,000 <strong>to</strong> The Healthy Waters Institute, which unites<br />

education, community <strong>and</strong> stewardship <strong>to</strong> ensure the long-term health of Oregon’s rivers <strong>and</strong><br />

streams.<br />

• Classroom Law Project (www.classroomlaw.org) – $2,500 <strong>to</strong> help teach youth participation in<br />

democracy by promoting underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the law <strong>and</strong> the role of the citizen so that students become<br />

empowered <strong>and</strong> active in their government.<br />

• Host Development Inc. (www.hostdevelopment.com) – $2,500 <strong>to</strong> help create affordable home<br />

ownership opportunities for low-<strong>to</strong>-moderate income families <strong>and</strong> individuals.<br />
