Pastor’s Message
ADVENT is here. It is a time of
preparation for the Holy Season of
Christmas. I find Advent difficult
because there is no clear program for
it. Lent require fasting, penance and
alms, but Advent...nothing of the sort.
So it is up to us to prepare ourselves
for the birth of Christ. One attitude
we may want to keep in mind is what
do “I” need to do, or avoid, to have
Christ be re-born within me?
Do I need to re-dedicate myself to
prayer? Do I need to re-dedicate
myself to acts of generosity? Do I need
to re-dedicate myself to looking at
others different, with more patience,
respect, etc.?
This is also part of the New
Evangelization. It is us being reborn in
our faith, to become re-excited about
the Good News.
Use these next four weeks fruitfully.
Enjoy them!
Religious Education/Catechesis
Religious Ed. is a growing and thriving ministry in our parish. We have classes
for kids in Pre-school all the way into High School. The Goals of Religious Ed.
are to first plant the seeds of faith within our children, to help those seeds grow
and to teach the basics of the faith. The Real Teachers of the faith are of course
the parents.
This also includes the preparation of our students and their families for the
celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation. This year we have 29 students in
Confirmation, another 29 children in the First Communion Classes and another
22 older children preparing for either baptism or first communion.
The challenges we face this year and almost every year are committed Catholics
who will help to teach our students. We have sufficient teachers now, but no
back ups should one need to leave. We also need volunteers to help set up and
clean up for donuts and coffee on the first and third Sunday of the month.
If you are able to lend your time to this vital ministry please contact Sherry Hall at
Vocations
Patrick Klekas is in college
seminary at Mt. Angel, Oregon.
He is from Elko, from a family of
10. Patrick attended Boise State, and
was also part of a band, called "The
Girlfriend Season." Their music can be
found in Itunes. Patrick has been active
within parish life, and as well active in
the community as basketball coach and
teacher.
Currently we have five men in seminary
studying to become priests.
Pray for Vocations!
A Vocation is the call to be holy. Every
person has this call. Holiness is
expressed in our vocations (small “v”);
as religious, married or a dedicated life.
So we all have a vocation. Hearing
the call to marry is fairly easy, but
hearing the call to a religious life or a
life dedicated to service is a bit more
difficult.
The Office of Vocations for the Diocese
is set up to help those people discerning
a call to the religious life or a dedicated
Our Lady of Guadalupe
In December of 1531, the Virgin Mary
appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous
person of what we call Mexico. In her
last appearance to Juan Diego, she
had him collect roses blooming in the
winter and present them to the Bishop
of Mexico. When he did so, an image
of the Lady was imprinted on his cloak.
This image hangs in the Basilica in
Mexico City.
She appeared as a dark skinned native,
and means a great deal to the people
of Mexico. Each year, on December
12th, huge celebrations occur to
commemorate her appearance.
Come together as parish to celebrate!
Mañanitas (morning songs) begin at
7am. More songs will be sung a 4pm
with mass at 6pm.
