Minutes from the
2010 St. Thomas Annual Meeting
Preliminary Matters
Meeting began at 11:30 with prayer
Senior Warden, Bonnie Palevich, called the meeting to order
It was MSP to approve the 2009 annual meeting minutes
February 28, 2010
Rector’s Address
Father Breckinridge talked about “coming home” to St. Thomas. There are 3 areas he would like to focus on the next 12 months:
1. To revitalize and expand with the Parish Life Center project
2. Create new opportunities for leadership and ministry especially among small groups.
3. Create new worship experiences, especially attractive to younger families.
Treasurer’s Report
Fred Barkman provided the financial report for 2009. A deficit was projected for 2009 and indeed a $21,141 deficit did occur.
The main reasons were color copies, rectory expenses and salary expenses all higher than anticipated. The largest December
pledge revenue since 2004 occurred which offset the deficit some. Fred discussed that procedural changes will be needed
moving forward to clearly define the Project Outreach money from Christmas and Easter. Unrestricted Reserves dropped by
$85,000 but the true number was $58,000 as the rest went to unexpected expenses.
Fred transitioned into 2010. There has been an increase in pledging for 2010, largest in many years. Hiring an Associate Priest
come fall will increase the salary expense. Building and Grounds will decrease as it is being moved to salaries. Fred also detailed
all the Project outreach giving. Questions from the floor were answered by Fred.
Senior Warden’s Address
Bonnie Palevich was appreciative of her time as the Senior Warden. The Rector search was a big focus for the Church last year.
Among the other things accomplished included a rectory remodel, Las Vegas themed fundraiser and fellowship, revitalize the
Parish Life Center and made other changes that made for better experiences for parishioners.
Incoming Senior Warden, Bob Webb
Bob was appointed by Father Breckinridge as the incoming Senior Warden. Bob is looking forward to the new responsibility.
Fred Barkman will continue as the Treasurer. Jim Blundell will continue as the Chancellor and jean Johnson will be the new
Parish Clerk.
Vestry Candidates — Class of 2014
Paul Birkeland
Born and raised in
Seattle, I was graduated
from Princeton and attended
UW Law School.
I ran the commodities
department for Merrill
Lynch in Seattle, then
founded Birkeland and Associates, a real
estate development firm. I retired from
active management in 2006. I joined
St. Stephen’s Episcopal in Seattle about
35 years ago and married my late wife,
Joyce, there in 1978. My new wife Diane
(Fr. Lex married us in December 2010)
was in same class joining that church
with Joyce—certainly God’s providence,
I would say. In the early 1980s we joined
St. Thomas, and two of my children are
graduates of St Thomas School. I serve
on the board of PONCHO, His Deal
Bible Study Group, and will be a featured
speaker for the Ivy League Christian
Union next May at Princeton. I also
served as co-chair with Rose Magee on
the Life Center building committee, and
am very proud of our proposed project.
I look forward to serving on the Vestry
and working to get the new building fully
funded and completed. St Thomas has
been a bedrock of my life and my faith,
and I look forward to serving all of you
in this important position. Thank you.
Bonnie Pearce
I am a “cradle Episcopalian,”
christened
at St. Elizabeth’s in
Seattle and confirmed
here at St. Thomas. I
am a third-generation
St. Thomas member, active in the St.
Thomas youth group, and served as an
acolyte. My husband Frank and I have
attended St. Thomas parish sporadically
for years, but decided to join the parish
after our first daughter was born in 2000.
I am now a stay-at-home mom with
three kids, ages 1, 6 & 10. Previous work
experience includes Human Resources
and Recruiting at BEST Consulting and
a Human Resource Generalist at Microsoft.
Current and past volunteer activities
include board positions with PACE
at Lockwood, Bridlepath Homeowners
Association, and a Girl Scouts Service
Unit Team member. I also volunteer
on the Lockwood PTA, as a Girl Scout
Leader for a junior troop, and Assistant
Leader for a Daisy/Brownie troop. At
St. Thomas I have volunteered in the
toddler co-op and on the St. Thomas
Vacation Bible Camp. My husband Frank
is an usher and both daughters sing with
the St. Thomas Choristers. I am committed
to representing the interests of
families with young children and look
forward to serving the Church where
needed.
Steve Reid
Steve and his wife Alice
joined St. Thomas in
2004. They had a long
history with St. Thomas,
starting in 1971 when
it was the church they
would visit when traveling
through Seattle on trips from Honolulu,
where they lived until 1993. Steve
became active in the Episcopal Church
during the 1980s at St. Andrew’s Cathedral
there, where he served on the Vestry
and as Senior Warden. At that time he
was also a founding member of the St.
Andrew’s Cathedral Foundation Board.
In 1993, they became active here at St.
Mark’s Cathedral where he served on the
Vestry and as Junior Warden. In 1995 he
was the founding Chairman of the St.
Mark’s Cathedral Foundation that has
contributed over $1 million to the Cathedral
for maintenance of its buildings
and grounds. Since joining St. Thomas,
Steve has been active in “Together We
Build,” an interfaith group that supports
Habitat for Humanity on the Eastside.
Steve is President of Professional Estate
Planning, Inc, specializing in Life and
Disability Insurance. He is still active (on
a reduced basis) and is now in his 46th
year of practice. “My clients won’t let me
retire.”
Mary Newcomer Williams
Mary and her husband,
Fred, and children,
Isabel (age 10) and
Connor (age 8), have attended
St. Thomas since
December 2007. Mary
was raised Catholic, and
was formally received into the Episcopal
Church in May 2010. Mary currently
serves as Director of the Friends of St.
Thomas (FOST) component of the Life
Center Capital Stewardship Campaign
(after serving on the Stewardship Committee
in 2008-2009 and chairing the Fall
2009 Annual Stewardship Campaign).
She also teaches Sunday School and
recently became a Eucharistic Minister.
The rest of the family is active in parish
life as well, with Fred assisting in Sunday
School and with Thanksgiving meal
deliveries; Isabel serving as an Acolyte,
lay reader, Chorister, and Kids Club
member; and Connor attending Sunday
School and Vacation Bible Camp (as well
as being widely quoted for observing that
the current Great Hall building requires
us to “disguise conference rooms as
classrooms” for Sunday School). Mary
has been an attorney since 1996 and recently
observed her five-year anniversary
as in-house counsel at Microsoft.
I am a cradle Episcopalian
and grew up in
San Antonio, Texas. As
a teenager I was active
in the choir and in Jr.
Daughters of the King. I have been
active in Episcopal churches in Massachusets,
Texas, California, and now here
in Medina. I taught Sunday school when
my children were growing up. And here
at St. Thomas I am on the Newcomer’s
Committee and head the Dinners for
Eight.
Aileen Loranger
Aileen Loranger, PhD,
RN is a cradle Episcopalian
completed EfM course and have served
on numerous outreach projects. We see
exciting expansion in Christian programs,
service to the community
(especially the poor; those sick or
lonely), and a deepening commitment to
listen to Christ’s call in our lives.
Convention Delegates
Class of 2013
Kim Malcolm
Kim has worked as a
radio reporter, producer,
and host for CBC Radio
in Canada and NPR
member station KERA
90.1 in Dallas. She currently
volunteers on the board of Our
Redeemer Christian Preschool in Kirkland
and is a Sunday School assistant
at St. Thomas. She is married to David
Paranchych and they have two sons, sixyear-old
Ben and three-year-old James
Paranchych.
Keith Moulton
Keith has been a member
of St. Thomas for over
12 years. He has helped
out with ushering and
participated in the life
of St. Thomas Episcopal
Church. He and his wife, Margie,
consider this their home. Keith and
Margie have retired though he has stayed
employed in the financial area, currently
employed as a contractor at Boeing.
Whether it’s in altar guild, ushering, baking
bread, or spring clean-up, you have
probably found him and Margie actively
helping out at the Church. He says, “I
cherish all the friends and family that
attend St. Thomas. I will feel honored to
participate with fellow parishioners as a
delegate at the next Convention.”
Alyce Rogers
We joined the St. Thomas
community as members
in 2000 and my love for
this parish has grown
each year. I love the
inclusivity of the church, the warmth
of it’s members, the teaching I receive
each week, the great music program,
and now the joy of being involved in
planning for a Parish Life Center as part
of the Advance Commitment Committee.
My activities within the parish
are mostly musical, including the New
Year’s Eve Gala, Cabarets, Recitals,
and Concerts. My goal in these events
has been to bring many people in the
greater community to know our church!
I was involved in the acquisition of the
Hutchinson Memorial Concert Grand
Steinway piano and in raising funds for
our new choir robes (thank you all...we
love them!!). I am a Lector and Eucharistic
Minister, and I helped begin the
famous Consignment Fair. “Practicing
the Hospitality of God” is an inspirational
mantra for me because I believe
that is what Jesus is asking us to do
wherever we are, and I am striving to
follow Christ more faithfully every day.
Serving as a delegate to the Diocesan
Convention will be a new, and I hope
enlightening, experience.
Dick Rogers
I came to St Thomas with
my wife, Alyce, in 2000.
We were midlife Episcopalians
from Portland,
OR. St. Thomas was
next door to where we
chose to live. My wife fell in love with
the music program. We felt welcomed
by the community. I started an EFM
program and joined in the Stephen Ministry
program. With the help of several
others we generated a Healing Hands
ministry. I have also tried to encourage
an increasing interest in iconography.
We have been invited to serve as
delegates to the Diocesan Convention
by the Vestry leadership and are looking
forward to serving in this capacity,
which we have never done before.
Delegates to Convention
serve two-year terms. If
a Delegate is unable to
attend Convention, an
Alternate is certified to
vote in his or her place.
Mary’s first visit to St.
Thomas was over 15
years ago. She says, “I
become a refuge and a
delight. The Sunday forum is one of
my favorite times of enlightenment.”
She is blessed with two sons and two
daughters and their families. She has
served in the church school, Vacation
Bible Camp, and Christmas pageant.
“Attending the Diocesan convention is
a great opportunity to learn more about
the good works, workers within our
Diocese, and the greater church in the
world. I would be happy to represent
our parish.”
moved to California
when he was 12 years
old. He went into the U.S.
Army and was stationed
in Japan. He says, “With
a great deal of luck (and maybe with
the help of the Holy Spirit) I managed
not to go to Korea.” When discharged
from the Army, he met and married
his wife, Ruth. She encouraged him
to attend the University of Southern
California (go Trojans). After university,
he was recruited by what then was
Philco Corporation and later became
Ford Aerospace. He was transferred to
Guam where his daughter was born.
was raised in Edmonton, Alberta and
received a PhD in Electrical Engineering
from Queen’s University. While in
Dallas, David and Kim attended the
Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration,
where he and James were baptized
together at the Easter vigil in 2007. He
currently works as a patent analyst at
Intellectual Ventures in Bellevue. David
has enjoyed becoming a part of the St.
Thomas family and is excited about
the opportunity to serve on the Project
Outreach Committee.
Jodi Wilson
Jodi and her husband,
Mike, have been attending
St. Thomas since
2005. They have one
daughter, Amelia (10),
and two sons, Callum
(7) and Vaughn (2). Jodi is from the
Seattle area. She graduated from Loyola
Marymount University in Los Angeles
in the field of International Relations.
She spent time during and after college
living in Germany and Austria working
for an exchange program and then doing
post graduate work. She worked for
Columbia Sportswear in Portland, OR
and the World Affairs Council in Seattle
before moving to the technical side of
international exchange. She has worked
for many years as a contractor for the
U.S. Department of State doing support
and training for a software product.
Jodi and her family have assisted with
the wonderful St. Thomas thanksgiving
dinner program the last few years. Jodi
looks forward to using her non-profit
and international experience to get
further involved in the church and the
community.
Dear St. Thomas Family:
All of us hope to
have a job we can
describe as “fun.”
I am pleased to
report that I can
say, after eighteen
months as Rector of
St. Thomas, that I
am having a lot of fun! This is a happy
community. There are plenty of serious,
hard-working folks here, that’s for
sure, but there is a lightness of spirit, a
joy that doesn’t take itself too seriously,
that has really defined St. Thomas in
2010. It has been my experience in life
that every truly holy person I have ever
met has an enormous sense of humor.
St. Thomas has that same happy sense
of itself. This is a community that is
serious about what it does in ministry
and worship without taking itself too
seriously, if you see what I mean. A
happy place.
This year has been marked by the infectious
energy of our Capital Stewardship
Campaign, “Building For The Hospitality
Of God,” so ably led by Robert
and Sue Collett and Ev and Vesta Loyd.
The Campaign raised up more than
one hundred volunteers who worked
enthusiastically and lovingly to generate
over five million dollars towards the
construction of The Life Center at St
Thomas Episcopal Church. Conceived
by the Building Committee co-chaired
by Rose Magee and Paul Birkeland, this
ambitious project aims to be a resource
for the wider Eastside community as
well as for our St. Thomas family.
St. Thomas has long been known for its
rich musical tradition. That tradition has
been enriched this year. After a nationwide
search, the Liturgical Arts Associate
Search Committee, chaired by Gwyn
Barkman, unanimously recommended
From the Rector
to me that we call our interim associate,
Charles Rus, to become permanent in
the role. Among a really talented and
experienced applicant pool, Charles
stood out. His musicality and artistry at
the organ, his compositional skill, the
breadth of his repertoire, and his gentle
spirit marked him as the right fit for St.
Thomas. The children’s music program
has also been revitalized with the arrival
of Marion Anderson as Children’s Musical
Director. We are now graced once
a month by the ministry of over twenty
five red-robed Choristers leading our
singing on Sunday. Truly, cherubim and
seraphim are in our midst. We also had
a very successful concert season, under
the able direction of our non-pareil impresario,
Alyce Rogers. Behnke Memorial
Fund concerts and the New Year’s
Eve gala were culturally enriching and
fun events for both members and our
neighbors throughout the community.
Our clergy staff has likewise been
strengthened and enriched by the arrival
of Karen Haig as Priest Associate.
Her ordination to the Order of Priests
by Bishop Rickel in November was an
occasion for joyful liturgy and celebration.
Karen brings significant pastoral
and personal gifts to St Thomas, and
she has already begun to take up major
responsibilities in Adult and Children’s
formation, liturgy, and pastoral care.
As a teacher, preacher, counselor and
pastoral friend, Karen’s grace-filled
presence adds a lovely diversity of gifts
to our community.
We continue to live into our mission to
“Practice the Hospitality of God” in
ways both large and small. Your generosity
to Project Outreach, your service
to Congregations for the Homeless,
which hosted thirty-two men for the
entire month of July, and to The Sophia
Way, your support of our pilgrims to El
Salvador and your engagement with our
incredible Thanksgiving Day feeding in
which over 1300 meals were served to
hungry and lonely people on the Eastside,
are tangible witnesses to our baptismal
covenant vow “to seek and serve
Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor
as ourselves.” This same hospitality
is extended to visitors and newcomers
by Phyllis Ross and her Newcomer’s
Committee, and we have raised up Kim
Malcolm as our Minister of Incorporation
to extend hospitality to those who
are already here. Pastoral care ministries,
with Heather Smith as the network
co-coordinator, Mary Pneuman and
Jason Hanleybrown as Stephen Ministry
leaders, and prayer groups and visitors
continue to grow.
St Thomas’ financial condition remains
sound. Thanks to the prudent financial
management of Treasurer Fred Barkman,
the Finance Committee chaired
by Ed Reifel, and the Vestry, chaired by
Senior Warden, Bob Webb, we finished
the year with a Ministry Budget surplus,
despite the lagging economy. The Vestry
has approved another balanced budget
for 2011.
St Thomas is known as “The Builder”.
Let us continue to move forward
together, following the godly example
of our patron, discerning and living out
the many ways we can “Build For The
Hospitality Of God” in 2011.
Faithfully,
Page 9
From the Outgoing Senior Warden
As expected, 2010 has been a very busy
year, and it appears that 2011 will be just as
busy. Let’s go by the calendar. We started
(really, just before 2010) by deciding to go
ahead with St. Thomas Life Center plans
which had been put on hold in 2008. Fantastic
work was done by the Life Center
Steering Committee chaired by Bonnie
Palevich; then the Building Committee
went to work with major participation by an amazing number
of folks all “herded” by chairs Rose Magee and Paul Birkland.
As you know, the Life Center went where absolutely no one
had any ideas about at the start, and the help given by many
folks from outside our parish was amazing; then raising the
money effort was started. Again a tremendous amount of
work in uncharted territory was coordinated by Sue and
Robert Collett and Vesta and Ev Loyd. You all have been
exposed to that personally. All of this gave a wonderful excitement
and enthusiasm throughout the year. It was year to
be very proud of. Mark Nelson and Bob Simeone should get
special recognition. Both were involved from the beginning
concept in 2007. And then they reactivated in 2010 under the
leadership of our new rector. Look around you at the pictures,
drawings, and concepts; it just couldn’t have been done
without these two.
But the Life Center effort wasn’t the only significant activity
in 2011. In Father Lex Breckinridge’s first full year as our
much-loved rector we had rich Lenten and Easter Seasons.
The Maundy Thursday dinner stands out prominently in my
mind.
After a nationwide search Charles Rus was moved from
acting Music Director to a unanimous choice of the search
committee to stay on permanently. And aren’t we lucky to
have him!
During the summer our teenagers went back to another rich
experience in El Salvador. All the youth had a very active year
under the excellent and enthusiastic leadership of Josh Hosler.
And Congregations for the Homeless under leadership of
Beth Zobel was very successful.
Thanksgiving brought yet another triumph for St. Thomas.
Amazingly, under the leadership of Tammy Waddell, Brian
Evison, and Jim Hughes, we fed 1300 people! We received
some wonderful publicity in the Bellevue Reporter about this
ministry and developed an even closer relationship with
Hopelink, which supplies many of the names and families
who are in need of our help.
Autumn brought the largest Capital Campaign this church has
ever done. What an opportunity it was for parish fellowship.
What else happened in the fall? The Rev Karen Haig happened
in the fall. She came to us with great enthusiasm by all
who met her. She was ordained here with a wonderful service
and reception. And she has been a treasure to all who have
met her, and almost all of us have.
So, it’s been a great year! Just as excitedly anticipated when I
came on the Vestry two years ago and especially when Lex
asked me to be your Senior Warden last February. I’m very
honored to be of service to this wonderful organization.
From the Incoming Senior Warden
Oh! It’s still me? Could have blown me over with the proverbial
feather last month, when I had a brief meeting with our
wonderful rector. You’ll have to ask him how that happened.
After the long history of 2010 above, there is no need to go
through plans for 2011. There is obviously lots of unfinished
business, and as always there will be new opportunities for
this wonderful congregation to excel. I pledge with discernment,
prayer, and hopefully with a modicum of grace, that I
will do my best to represent you all. And, really, I am always
available for discussion, concerns, or lobbying for causes. I’m
usually here a lot and almost always on Sunday. I’m the old
bald guy in the choir robe.
